- Here is part 2 of my 10 items on Alone season 6, discussing my choice of fishing line and hooks, paracord, and pemmican, and why I chose each items and how they were for me out there.
On the show you had expressed some doubts of yourself and your past, which I do more than is healthy. I was blown away by how awesome you are in your knowledge, resiliency, gratitude, and accomplishments. To add, some of the things you said were extraordinary and what I really needed to hear from an incredible soul, especially your last words in which you took pride in abandoning the modern day plagues of winning and money. Whatever issues of your past give you trouble, this total stranger writing to you is here to say that you are amazing. Know that.
Thank you Ken!
Well done show. You and Jorden have been my favorites. I am glad you both were the last. You both have deserved to win...Your shelter your positive attitude and your skills got you that far. My respect 👍
I second a pemmican tutorial! Thanks for the great explanation. I saw the list of items and pemmican was something I’d never heard of.
Amazing woman, the kind that is rare in the current world. Ive never had the pleasure of meeting someone so interesting as yourself in my life which
makes me sad. You are a true gem of a natural woman. Wits beauty and wholesome.
You are a badass. Even when you tapped out you did it with a smile on your face. I really think your attitude and heart is a big reason the land was good to you.
thanks steve, I completely agree !
You are so BADASS LADY !!
You rock !!! 1000% respect !!
You killed it on the show ! Thick ice be damned !! That saw BTW omg amazing item !
This is the second video of yours that I have ever watched. You are the real deal. I hope you are pleased with your own accomplishments, you are very knowledgeable and a great teacher. Thank you. Subscribed.
I’m really enjoying your explanations and recounting your experiences.
So inspired by you!! Just stumbled across Alone for the first time and watched season 6 first for no particular reason. I kept saying to myself, this woman should be a teacher or do TED talks! You are such a great speaker and inspirational to listen to. Hope you are loving life and appreciating your wilderness survival perspective.
thanks so much, and I am a teacher! Teaching these skills is what I do! I have an online gathering coming up soon, registration opens this week! September 16! I encourage you to look into it and sign up! Here is the link: academy.buckskinrevolution.com/fall-2020-buckskin-revolution-online-gathering
Thank you for sharing your thought process in the selection and use of your 10 items. I learned so much. Wishing you well!
Wow, you’re a wealth of knowledge. I learned so much!
There's a lot of videos covering "survival" topics, knives, ferro rods, shelters, but it's rare that there's something that adds to the knowledge base. Your point about pemmican and fat deficiency was a revelation for me. Seems obvious, Ketosis can't happen in the absence of sufficient fat, but that never occured to me.Thanks!
Not sure, people can get into ketosis with their body using their own body/ viceral fat. Indeed this is how you loose viceral fat on a ketogenic diet. But when there is no more fat to loose, like it was the case with this lady towards the end of her challenge, then you would need to consume fat from food
You are an excellent communicator!
Such a view! Sure no place for anyone with vertigo! Wow! Thanks for sharing!
Great advice & thanks for sharing ✓
Just watched all of your alone season while sick, got sick after just leaving grass valley a few days ago.
Looked like quite the journey, and thanks for sharing your knowledge & skills.
If I was going to be stuck alone with someone in the wilderness for months, I'd be happy if it was with you. Both because of your knowledge, and skill, but also because you would give me something nice to look at during that time. ❤️
I kind of doubt that will happen
Love your videos ....you're so well spoken and calming. Great energy true kind soul
Ever since the first season, every time I look at the list of allowed items and think about what I'd bring on my fantasy Alone season, pemmican is ALWAYS on the list for exactly the reasons you stated. And I always doubted that decision for the reasons you stated, too. But after seeing this, I'm all-in on it. And you ruled in that season. NorCal!!!!
You rock Woniya! You were definitely a favorite of my wife and I on Alone. The gear choices seem solid. Pemmican and the knife vs an axe and snare wire are the only ones my gut would be to do differently. Having said that I have never stayed in the woods without a knife and food. :)
Thnxs for uploading and sharing this info on your items !
👍🏻🇺🇸
You are a beautiful person, inside and out, by far. Love your emotions and expressions.
Thank you for putting out there so much valuable information...... You are helping so many for future survival. Just wanted to say its appriciated! 💖👍
Pemmican reminded me of another youtube channel here that deal with food and history in 1700s in the Americas - they showed how pemmican was made then using old tools and techniques.
Kudos on Penican. I ALWAYS carry some. Literally even in my edc. I was rooting for you like crazy. Had Jordan not scored that moose, you would have outlasted everyone, and possibly in part because of this one food choice. You are amazing and your wealth of knowledge and appreciation for nature really came through.
In Northeastern Michigan n February it was 9 degrees Fahrenheit daytime, -20 at night. ... But we brought 6 meals rapped in foil, we cooked in the coals of the fire. .. Your better than me. , I'll be watching.
Smart girl. I love your videos. We went on a polar camp out, for a week.
You’re like dream, watching you...thanks.
Finally someone else is telling everyone how important FAT is in a survival situation. Great choices on your 10 items
Thanks for sharing the knowledge you've gained from your time on Alone.
Thank you so much for discussing your choice of rations. I wondered if choosing something high carb would be a problem in relation to ketosis. And you made your choice based on science so your ration seemed more of a tool than just rations to keep you going for a few extra days. I was really rooting for you on Season 6!!
I really want to learn to make pemmican! Thanks for reminding me about it.
Yes, you may recommend Pemmican and I accept your recommendation. Thanks for making the video.
I was pulling for you on alone I was thinking they should have paid a second place you deserve whatever comes your way
Yes Woniya, great choice in my opinion to take the pemican. Your rationalization for taking it is sound. What would the natives do? they would take pemican.
for sure! the only good item allowed word taking, in my opinion
Never watched alone but I can tell you got it together great channel 👊🏻
Thank you Woniya, for your comments on pemmican. I was also amazed at your ability to snare game. The pemmican we had in military survival rations is horrible. We didn't put so much emphasis on it. We told our students how to make it however.
Thank you! I enjoy each new video.
Good stuff! I wonder why more folks haven't embraced Keto before going on the show! If you're in ketosis when you don't have food your body will burn its fat instead of just muscle. Of course, one thing to note is that 'rabbit starvation' mostly occurs when you try to eat them like a white person. ;-) Meaning eating just the muscle meat. If one eats the eyes, brains, organs, etc then living on rabbits is more likely.
Thanks for showing us your items!
That's an offensive remark......so what are you referring..... Black people only eat pork and chittlins?
Great video, il bemaking some pemmican now !!!!!😁
You are so adorable! I love your heart. Even if you had no skills I think you could have made it on will power alone. You are total proof that macho alpha bs isn't what someone needs to survive. Thank you for the inspiration!
@ryan miller If you're someone who studies or practices bushcraft it's easy to see she's totally got what it takes to survive out there. More than that, she would thrive. Hollywood likes to polish a thing down until it's unrecognizable then spit it out as "fact." Don't be fooled, Ryan. This woman is worth her weight in gold. :-)
@ryan miller Right - that was the smartest thing I've ever seen any contestant do. They all have it as an option. Considering you're going to spend ALL of your time looking for food, it's best to have that covered while you get all your other stuff together, before the weather comes. Then everything is done and you only need to worry about the one thing. They're not being dropped in the middle of nowhere with just a pocket knife. They get 10 items for a reason. What kind of a fool would go out into the wilderness without some kind of starter/emergency food, you know? I certainly wouldn't. If the other contestants were honest, they wouldn't either. Pemmican was travel food for a reason, especially in the north. It not only kept you alive but it kept you healthy. First Nations carried it, European fur traders carried it, everyone did. And these were all the toughest people on the planet at the time. Probably, still. Think about it: if you were going on a survival show would you purposely hobble yourself, or would you grab some food? I'd also suggest bringing some salt and a fiber source, depending where you're going.
@ryan miller I'm having trouble remembering what happened, but wasn't it a medical disqualify? Didn't she lose too much weight by percentage or something? I don't know how I feel about that. On the one hand, I certainly don't want the person to die but on the other it feels like you're taking away their chance to come back on their own. Also, I'm not sure I'm getting what's important to you here. She beat out several other contestants. That's not a loss. Also, just because she didn't win doesn't mean she wouldn't have survived. In the end isn't that the point? You do realize that just because any contestant doesn't win doesn't mean that they failed. Just getting on the show proves they've all earned their chops. Well, except for that one "alpha" who cried and whined the entire time. XD But I think that was season 8 anyway.
@ryan miller Woahhh Alpha! Hahaha but I do like your taste in music. I had a peek. Like I said, I don't think you could call any one of them a failure. For instance Joe Robinet: he felt the need to tap out in three days...ish. Again, memory issues. He really knows what he's doing and I love his channel (esp in winter) but it just shows you how much bushcraft can be in the mind. The most consistently dangerous thing out there, at the end of the day, is you. How you react to things, how you handle them. Prepare for them. How quickly you learn, or let go of something. Otherwise it would be about as interesting as watching girl scouts earn badges (or boy scouts for that matter). Human strife! No one is immune. Enjoy your evening, Ryan! :-)
@ryan miller 日本語で答えるならあなたも詮索したに違いない XD
Can I make a video request? a pemmican recipe/tutorial! I just rendered buffalo leaf fat yesterday, and I am trying to decide on a dried fruit.. I'm thinking blueberries and cherries. Also considering using the liver in my recipe.
Totally, I do plan to make one but have such a backlog of things to get to just now! Blueberries would be great, cherries would probably be too but are hard to get totally crunchy dry because of the pectin content. They will change the texture to make it chewier I would guess, but it might be good The only thing with dried liver is it doesnt keep quite as well, organs being more perishable. If you plan to eat it relatively soon it should be fine.
Sounds like the buffalo hunt went well! Hooray!
Great insights! It also seems clear that despite the show's producers trying to find areas with resource parity, some are going to be better than others. Jordan seemed to be in a prime spot with moose habitat and accessible fishing. You didn't seem to have either. Makes your stay even more impressive.
thank you, and for sure, Jordan's had an amazing spot in terms of access to big game and fishing whole I had neither, and his spot was far more abundant in small game as well. Which is not to take anything g away from his skill level- he is incredibly skilled, but without great luck in your locale and the resources available, even incredible skills can't do much for you
Totally agree on the pemmican. So many contestants don't take a food item and they're almost incapacitated when they can't find food for 3 days while burning energy building shelters. The physically larger people are large because they're used to eating regularly. Imagine going a day without food while having to do something arduous. And then imagine 4 days with no food.
I don't know why nobody has thought of this as an item, but a roll of fire retardant cellophane plastic wrap in a heaping roll. How to use: wrap the trees around where you are staying. From 6' high down to the ground 1 wrap around would give you protection from the wind, animals and provide a warm air space. Other uses: make a tepee, put branches, moss vegetation around the tepee, then wrap the the tepee with the cellophane then continue with the moss, leaves, branches around the cellophane. Total weather proof, no wind can get in, snow proof and especially rain proof. When finished, start where the cellophane leaves off, wrap it around a stick and take it with you. No litter or trash.
you don't get to take just anything g you want it can come up with. There is a list of about 60 approved items and you have to choose from amongst those
@@BuckskinRevolution bummer, but excluding that, still a great idea to into the woods with, can even wrap yourself with it.
I just want to soak up your knowledge for a week lol. Do you do womens camp outs? If so, where do I sign up?!
This channel is Amazing
I love powerful women so much!
regret that we not see you catching a fish, otherwise it might last you longer. Utimattely Jordan is hard to beat
I am a little late, but I just finished season 6. lol I was wondering if you can show us how to make pemmican?
Thanks for the video and explanations.
I wonder if you would've had the same issue Sam had with snare wire on season 5 if you had brought it. He mentioned how brittle and inflexible it became with the cold and was basically unusable
Sounds like an issue with his specific wire. I didn't hear about that issue with anyone else who was in the arctic locations on Season 6 or 7 and it was far colder there than what they experienced on Season 5 in Mongolia. I think the lowest it got during that season was in the teens (Fahrenheit) while it got to -40 on Season 7
@@BuckskinRevolution You must be right! I just started season 7 and had that same thought
So wonderful! Agreeing with others--could you do a pemmiican tutorial? Did they provide the pemmican or did you make it?
It's definitely on my list. The list is pretty long and I keep filming more vdeos than I edit, (the filming is sooo much more fun!) so i have a backlog right now. But yes, eventually I will.
And I actually had that in the video but edited out- I talked about how I had already prepared all the ingredients to make my own, and then heard we weren't allowed to bring our own. The show provided it.
I would really appreciate this!
great info.ty
She sure is easy to watch...
Did you make your own pemmican to bring? Or was there a pre-manufactured version that was provided for you?
She made her own but the show wouldn’t let her to take it and provided her with some instead.
where did you get your pemmican? did you make it or buy it? would love to see a video on you making it. Thanks for you video.
Hi Woniya. You're an excellent survivalist and you made it all look so easy, which I'm sure it's not in the slightest.
I just wanted to ask whether there is a limit on the size of the knife you can take? I noticed one contestant brought a Gurkha knife. Can you bring a large knife, a saw and and axe?
Are there limits on the types of items you can bring?
There are very strict limits on the types of items you can bring, and in the parameters of any of the allowable items. I don't like big knives though so I never looked into how big a knife you are allowed
Thank you for your reply, and videos. Throughout the show you had an excellent metal attitude the whole time. Well done!
thanks
I have learned why grizzly bears will get full of fish but still keep catching fish, but only eating the skin ,eggs, and heads. Because that's where the fat is.
Thanks so much for the videos! I’m fascinated by this. Which pot did you choose?
Good informative video.of all the food choices available I think pemmican is the best choice .(fat seemed so scarce out there) did you make your own?
Did not need the line could have used the small cords inside the paracord
Very insightful! There is so much more going on then they have time to show. Truly fascinating. Did/can you go over your archery set up?
thank you and yes, I plan to do a part 3 still to cover the remaining items i didn't talk about in parts 1 and 3 of this series. Life ran away with me and I never finished them all!
@@BuckskinRevolution I can only imagine. It was cool to see you were from Grass Valley! I use to spend time up there. I am from Chico. I live in Kentucky now. Take care and I wish you great health and success.
strong like monkey very cool, Chico is in the neighborhood for sure. Kentucky, not as much, but a better place to spend the fire season!!
@@BuckskinRevolution LOL! Indeed! KY is so green, i don't know that a wildfire the magnitude of ehat NorCsl sees is even plausible. We left shortly after the Camp fire. Not for that reason, but rather for a new adventure. It really is gorgeous out here. I thought I would miss all the outdoor activities when I left CA. There is even more out here than I I imagined. My ignorance showing its ugly head once again.
👍
What were your other 3 items? Bow I know, what else? Sleeping bag?
I wonder how pemmican tastes?
Does the berry taste dominate or the dried meat?....
Must try soon..
It's like heavy, greasy semi tart beef jerky plain but cooking with it, is kinda tasty
Thanks
Fascinating and insightful. I came across pemmican as a boy reading the tales of the polar explorers Amundsen, Scott, Shackleton, Nansen & co. Didn’t realise it had such a long pedigree! Great to hear your analysis and thinking, really useful
Between this and part 1 of your ten items video I only count 7 items. What am I missing?
The fact that I still need to record the final video! It will be up here eventually!
Note to self: pemican… but don’t make it too flavourful so I don’t eat too much of it.
Great video and very impressive lady, but you would not be knocked out of ketosis by eating gorp, Most people can stay in ketosis with less than 20 g of carbs a day. This is what Dave and Brook Whipple did and they found that this very small amount of gorp brought them mental comfort benefit too, but i appreciate what you say about the benefits of eating pemmican too. You need fat to stay in ketosis but to start with you body will use viceral fat if no fat or not enough fat from food sources until of course there is no more viceral fat to use and this is what happened to you.
I was wondering how you were able to survive on rabits and squirels, pemican makes a lot of sense.
she had at most 2 lbs of pemmican, Alexa. That's enough calories for 2 days, She lost like 40+ lbs of bodyweight and nearly died.
Hi Woniya. Could you only bring one ration item. Or could you combine rations up to a certain max weight? Thanks Chris
good questions. i could have brought up to 2 food rations, but each counts as one of the 10 items, so that would mean only 8 other things. 1 ration felt like the best compromise as I wanted some food to bring in, but there wasn't anything else i wanted to give up for more, especially something that could provide food like my bow or fish hooks. as it was, i didn't have access to any deep water so the hooks did me no good, but there was no way to know that until i was there. in other locations they would have made a big difference, as they did for some folks with good fishing sites (which not a single woman had on our season! so frustrating!)
And no, i couldn't have combined different foods, it was only one choice per item and only 2 lbs. In earlier seasons rations were 5 lbs, but they've been making it harder over time so for us it was down to only 2 lbs. not enough the worth giving up my bow for a 2nd ration!
@@BuckskinRevolution Thanks for taking the time to answer. I had been hoping you would win. But you did so well. Your shelter was great. Take care.
Hey Wonija why don’t you get a hold of me and we can go to pine dale Wyoming, in the woods I mean and practice some cool survival practices. I think we would get along , and have fun time
Lol!
I think maybe it was pemmican that tamed or won the west.
I would of left the paracord and took you (lol)
any recipe,s for pemican ?
snaring with fishing line is illegal why was it not on the show hmmmm
Please give us your recipe for pemmican
Unfortunately, though it had been my plan, I wasn't allowed to make my own pemmican to bring with me, the show provided it. I was very disappointed at first, but the pemmican they provided was made by a Cree woman according to her family recipe and was absolutely fabulous! (Thanks so much Brenda Holder!)
Smells fishy,,, or not,,,,,only time I got fish in survival senario,,,,I grabbed em by hand,,
If the producers of Alone would let an equal number of women and men participate, then women would have an equal chance of winning. By selecting mostly men, they are almost guaranteeing that a man will win every time. I wonder if they've ever thought about that.
oh my yes, it gets pointed out to them every season!
I'm confused?
I thought you could only take 10 items......literally 10?
You mention taking bits of this and bits of that, e.g., different grades of fishing line.
Check out the specific rules at the Alone website. Clothing doesn't against one's 10 items, but they give a lost that specifies exactly what clothing items one can bring. A "fishing kit" is one item, and includes 200 yds of line, which can be a combination of different weights, and 20 hooks- all barbless but can be of different sizes and shapes etc. Likewise "bow and arrow" count as one item and includes a bow, quiver, 9 arrows, etc. So it is 10 items according to their rules, not literally 10 individual pieces with each fish hook or arrow or clothing item counting as one
@@BuckskinRevolution
Many thanks for replying/explaining and please pardon my ignorance, I do apologise.
I hadn’t realised that you could split your fishing line yardage into different breaking strains, that’s really useful.
I was also interested and inspired by your video on the Leatherman Surge and the innovative modifications you made. And as you said, it may have been worthwhile choosing the axe over your knife?
Out of interest, I would like to watch a series where each contestant had exactly the same equipment as each other?
I didn’t catch the series you were in but congratulations and well done on your achievement.
Best wishes to you.
10 ITEMS ? ? ? YOU FORGOT ME ".....
What about the fat from the brains of the squirrel and rabbit. Did you eat those too ?
oh man, heck yes, they were amazing. I ate every part. seriously, EVERY part. Turns out sinuses are pretty good, and intestines are not nearly as bad as you would think
thanks
