- The Sega Astro City Mini is here and it does a lot of things right, but also misses a quality things it should have done! Was it worth it?
*I forgot to give my final impressions on the extra controllers at the end... they do feel cheap, but respond well. The d-pad feels not as high quality as original Sega controllers but it gets the job done!

I'm really happy with mine. I also got the decorative stand to make it look the part. The coin slot doubles as a bank.
Glad to see this has micro switches and the HDMI isnt hot garbage! Sega did what SNK didn't!

I received mine yesterday and like it alot. Its better than neogeo mini.
@Markus Müller The controller feels much, much better than it looks. Get what you're saying about the screen but I like the bezels you can use and its not a big deal to me. Regular HDMI connectivity instead of mini. Better stick and buttons. Two USB controller ports, better size, better variety of game types (too much repetition on the NeoGeo).......this pisses all over the NeoGeo mini.
@Markus Müller 1) this has much higher resolution than NGM, 2) HDMI output is great on this, total crap on NGM, 3) buttons are much better, 4) and yes, the UI and emulation run a lot smoother on this than NGM
@Markus Müller sure, get hung up about Virtua fighter which is really just a 3D bonus game

@@SpeccyHorace yeah what a dumb choice to use mini HDMI. no HDMI device I have has a mini port except NGM. Had to buy an adapter just for it.
Been waiting on this VIDEO this is the one i been Refreshing for. I got mine but cant open it til Christmas the wife took it immediately.

I just confirmed w/ mine that the MEGA-DRIVE 6-button d-pads do work w/ the unit, mode acts as coin.

I got mine yesterday and couldn’t wait to dig in! Glad to see someone else’s take it on
The quality looks excellent. The double bezel screen does bug me though. All they needed to do was use a cheap Chinese cell phone screen in a vertical orientation and center the image so the entire outer bezel was the screen in 4:3. Would love to see someone attempt a mod like this.
*Retrobit controllers appear to don't work without an adapter. The mayflash & brooks is supposed to work with certain controllers, but with no adapter the Sega Mini 6 button controller works out the box.

I've just discovered it works with the 8BitDo Mega Drive wireless controllers, which is awesome.
I love this thing and the arcade stick.

Damn this thing looks dope!! Def a step in the right direction Sega... now give us the full size one.. counter top style.. 2 quality sticks... M2 on the emulation of course.. would be the best home arcade out there.. these cabs have such a cool look/design.
There is some shimmering on the two vertically scrolling shooters . Other than that the emulation is really good
This looks good, definitely a step up over the Neo Geo Mini.

Were you able to get the retrobit sega controllers to work? I couldn't, was a bit of a disappointment. I'm glad the stick and buttons are quality inn this.

I got this device right after this video and its AMAZING! Perhaps the best arcade emulation console I ever played! I bought it directly from amazon japan and it shipped to me within 2 working days! Worth my every bucks!
I'm curious to know what games of that era people feel like this is missing. Outrun feels like the obvious licensing issue. But no hang on or the wacky Dynamite Dux?
I'll second OutRunners and GF II, and I'd specifically mention Rad Mobile and Power Drift amongst the superscalers that I would've liked to see on this mini.
I think it was a good idea if Sega use the Switch version of Outrun on this thing. At least Arcade 1up add Outrun and 3 racing games on the arcade machine, only they use a different car than Ferrari.

I got mine yesterday and I must say I’m pretty impressed with it. Much better output then the NeoGeo Mini and the joystick is pretty great too!
I got the fight stick with it. Micro switches on the stick. The buttons are not bad but not the best. I'm happy. I got one gamepad and I don't mind it. Chicky sticks on the fight stick and it's heavy. When I got all three I noticed the weight carrying it up to my room was clearly the fight stick.
Virtua Fighter looks good on 80" 4ktv
Damnit, I forgot to ordering this! This holiday season has been absolutely insane and one of the most expensive I have ever had (well second most expensive). I hope I can still get one of these...I love those controllers. I can't watch anymore...must buy it now!
Great little unit, I really wish After Burner was on it, as well as OutRun. but it's still Awesome and I'm loving mine.

whoa...thank you for testing the scanlines! Side scrollers are great to test how shaders affect the fps. This might just be an overlay or its powerful enough to handle shaders. Very cool!
It's really good, aside from VF1 slowdown occasionally, it plays so well, no discernable audio delay, prob a couple of frames of input lag, but it feels good still! The CX's BFI is a step too far for me though, as that added frame puts it in slightly soupy territory.
I really like the d pad for the controller. Also, Revenge of Death Adder is fun but so hard 😆😆😆

Nice unboxing & review, looks like a quality system and Sega didn't cheap out and actually made the stick clicky but are the buttons microswitched?
Unless I'm getting mixed up with another game, isn't Rad Mobile the in car viewpoint racer with a Sonic hanging from the mirror and wipers that can be turned on?
Sega should definitely have included Outrun, Afterburner, Hang On, etc instead of including multiple games of Columns, Golden Axe.
Would have been interesting to compare the displays between the Sega & SNK unit side by side even though they're different sizes.
Got mine , love this thing ! I actually really like the controllers , felt good where it mattered to my hands, spent hours on it .

Looks fairly well-made and that last game looked really cool. I'd maybe buy it around the $60-80 range

Finally a mini with a good joystick :)
Adventure Island, a side scroller, you can see this isn't powerful enough to output 1080p without it being choppy. But the screen on the device is lower resolution and seems to handle that perfectly fine. Shanobi looks great, background moves left to right very smooth.
@Markus Müller Yeah, I'm not familiar with the game but it looked like it had freezes at some points.

It definitely needs to b hacked I think, chuck every CAVE game on it! Although it does have heaps of bangers on it, definitely wanna grab one of these, nice review mate!!!

After updated Mayflash Magic NS firmware to v1.28 or higher, user must switch the mode to "white light" while connecting to a PC, MAC, or LINUX computer. Then, you can connect your "white light" Magic NS to Sega Astro City. Now you can use XBOX One controller(wireless), PS4 controller(wireless), and Nintendo Switch Pro controller(wireless) on your Sega Astro City mini. You can also use HORI fighting stick mini on it. for the wireless pairing, for PS4 wireless pairing. user press "PS + Share" at the same time. for XBOX wireless pairing, press "X" and it will flash slowly. Then press the "pairing button" for few sec and wait. for NS Pro controller, simply press "pairing button" for few sec and wait.
Got the green and pink one here in Japan, awesome mini console!

Man I love that game library and it seems like they actually put a little effort into this machine. If I have $140 to burn I'd probably pick this up.

Now that I got a solid opinion of this mini arcade... if the thing ever becomes hacked... its a strong maybe.

Columns is under rated.
I think the monitor might be defective on mine. It boots up, but after a few seconds it freezes unless I have it hooked up to a tv. That kind of sucks, but I'll live with it, since I can still play the games on my tv, and I've got a lot of stressful stuff in the pipeline right now, so I can't deal with having to return it to Japan. I was going to use it on a tv for the most part anyway.

Cool stuff! Looks quality. It looked like there were some sort of tabs or compartments on the back and bottom? Is that just aesthetic? Would love to see a teardown and know if there's enough room inside to add a battery to it.
Edit-add:. I stuffed a usb power supply inside the compartment of my neogeo arcade stick pro. Life changer. When combined with the "hyper mirror" adapter. Makes it totally wireless to the TV :)

japanese megadrive mini 6 button controllers work with it according to ppl online ;
mayflash S adapter lets the neogeo pro work with it (my plan 😎)

Do those Astro city arcade pads work on anything else besides the console itself ? PC, Mac , Switch, PS3 , ect?
use "Mayflash Magic NS" after update this adapter dongle to v1.28 or higher (latest v1.32). Sega Astro City/MD/Genesis mini is "white light mode".

I was lucky to get mine in because my bank actually thought it was fraud & froze my account and stop payments on everything (BLEW) so I got the system but I didn't get any of the extras like the controller or the little stand thing...
Dude same thing happened to me. I had to approve the transactions through the bank then have Amazon retry charging me. Wound up delaying my order, but still showed up fairly quick.

This definitely looks better than the Neo Geo Mini but the Neo Geo Mini has better games.
Is that really a 16:9 screen in there? If so, what a waste... The viewable area is so small relative to the size of the machine. Could have been epic if it had a 4:3 ratio screen in there...
@Markus Müller the ng mini is crap man its 4:3 screen was having black borders, crap speakers, crap buttons and joystick
@Markus Müller Of course I have owned and used it for over a month and then sold it. I also hacked it and the non - neo Geo ROMs were using full screen. Neo Geo ROMs use 3.3 inch as they don't take the hole screen. The menu does use full screen though. If speakers are not crap then sound emulation is. I couldnt stand listening to it when playing and always had the volume to the lowest.

Shame the screen they used is a 16:9 instead of 4:3, but it still looks good, well pretty good anyways.

Can anyone help me out with a games list? I love the Astro city cab I fell in love with them about & years ago. The joystick the buttons felt perfect and I’ve been chasing that feeling with all my arcade sticks. I wish they made it a little bigger like the hori fight stick mini just from a comfort level. Either way I can’t wait to get my hands on one. I’ll have to get two one for collecting lol thanks for posting

What people want for each gamepad is ridiculous. I've seen a $100+. No way. Especially when the Genesis mini 2's controller works fine for it. Even works on the Taito Egret II mini.
They should have used a 4:3 screen to begin with, this is such a pity...
4:3 LCD screens in that size with that pixel density probably don’t exist
