    Tip - Heat your spray cans in warm water before starting to spray, keep shaking between sprays & replace cans in warm water when you put them down if you are going to spray with them again.

    • @MrDVCHITTer
      @MrDVCHITTer 3 года назад +1

      This only necessary in cold weather, if ambient temps are warm/hot you're good with just shaking the can well between sprays.

    • @MonkeyShred

      I have tried that before and it actually seemed to cause the cans to sputter and splatter the paint.

    Great paint job. A sign of how sophisticated you've become. And instead of talking about technique like another bike restorer, you got in close and put it on display. Even showed what happens if you spray too slow, plus the troubles with SdotB's zinc primer and discussed the pressure differences in cans. Valuable. I learned from this.

    I went exactly through the same learning curve and have now come to the conclusion that I will never be a master bike painter, neither with this nor with any other product. Here is what I do instead: Preserve the original paint and decals as good as possible but thoroughly remove any rust. Put on new decals where necessary. Clear-coat the frame with high gloss.
    Great results so far and I like the patina!

    • @MonkeyShred

    That brazing looks sketchy thin man.
    Always looked at brazing like a metal glue... they need some surface area to have strength..
    As for those spray.bike paint jobs... I'm right there with you. I have a vintage Trek that's a sweet purple to Blue fade.. almost perfect gradient and I don't want to paint it because I know it'll be very hard to get it to look like that again...& have a nice clear finish.
    and my last job was a body shop.
    Sadly automotive paint & 2K clear is the way to go.
    The bike still turned out ok.
    An alternative for the Karin flake is Dupli-Color color EFX I got it at an automotive parts store and use some Dupli-Color engine enamel black as the base for a Walmart cruiser bike. It turned out pretty sick

    I have tried thier paint myself and would say I'm not a fan. The dark colors are not bad but the lighter and Brighter colors leave such a textured finish. I've sprayed close and normally and even contacted spraybike about the issues . They reccomend to smooth out the dusty finish with wax/parchment paper . I tried that but still had poor results. With a bicycle frame there are always areas that are tight and hard to spray . In these areas I've found that it will always end up with that textured/dusty finish. Due to that reason and the quality results I expect for any personal or customers bike I just discontinued offering or using their product. Cost wise it was not much different than buying a mini spray gun this also allows an unlimited amount of color choices and as long as you finish with a good 2-part clear coat I haven't seen much of a durability issue. But in the end it's all up to the user and what they are happy with.

    I must have missed the story on this Nashbar frame! I have an aluminum cross frame they were selling back in 2011, got it brand new on sale for $74USD. It's held up shockingly well; I've toured on it, raced cyclocross on it, and now it's my gravel bike clearing 700x43 gravelkings like it's no big deal. I would say Montana Hardcore are much better sprays. Coat is stronger by itself and if you clear coat it two, three times it does the job very well. The only thing Montana to becareful with is their zink spray, structure is a bit rough even after two layers of base colour. Three layers of base colour plus three of clear coat will fix that roughnes. Anyway, great video as usual and keep going with a great job you do ;)

    Yeah never been impressed with the powdery mess of spray.bike’s lighter colors. Spraying close as indicated also forces you to use/buy more cans. And they’re not cheap. Probably going with a powdercoater next time.

    • @MonkeyShred
      @MonkeyShred  3 года назад

      On the contrary, I think you actually use less spraying close! There's less paint going to waste.

    • @jp93309
      @jp93309 3 года назад

      @@MonkeyShred True spraying closer gives more focused spray pattern. But theoretically you cover less the closer you get to the subject. Also because of the powdery finish, having to flat it out and then respraying to get adequate coverage seems wasteful. I enjoy the spray paint videos so far and I’ve learned a lot so thanks.
