Hey thanks for the wise words! I think that was my first time using Montana and 2K and perhaps my 2nd bike sprayed. I made a lot of mistakes! Especially the prep. Oh boy. I’ve learnt a lot since and my last paint job was so much better thankfully! I started from a bare steel frame and sanded in between each layer. Much more prep time paid off.

But getting the preperation right is basically and always will be the number one factor in the final outcome the spraying is the easy bit believe me
When I sanded mine in between coats it seemed like it was too easy to take off the paint and reveal the previous coat or primer.
@@chriscross5689 I get this too, now really scuffing up with a scotch pad before the lacquer as my paint looks terrific at this point
Hi Monkey, another idea when using K2 clearcoat is to put just one thin layer first and then wait 30 minutes to see what happens with paint. Iwas just painting montana on powder coated frame... I did a lot of prep sending it with red scruber (like on sponge for cleaning disches but not green, red insetad). Montana spray did stick to it nicely but when I was doing K2 clearcoat first layer I did notice cracking of the paint (only in suport and sadle areas - most dificult areas). So I did wait for 30 minutes and then put another thick layer of K2. Then another one after 30 minutes and to be honest it nicely covered all the cracks. It's not perfect but it's good enough for me. Normaly you don't want to paint onto powder coatad frame, but red scruber is the best solution if you go to do this anyway.
P.S Keep in mind if you don't use gloves using red scruber you wont login to your phone by fingerprint ;)
I made quite a few mistakes painting my bike last year 😂. Even after watching lots of your videos, Martin, so I blame you 😉😉😉😙! This was actually a great video for some quick tips and certainly helped answer some questions I had about the quality of my paint job.
I Dont really have any comments on this video but do want to say Thank You . I wouldn't call my self a professional but your videos have helped me tremendously and now I can produce top quality paint jobs that helps me sell refurbished bikes and make money on customer custom paint jobs. I've watch alot of videos by others but yours are the most knowledgeable for people who are painting bikes. Your a gifted professional artist please don't stop making videos . Every piece of info you give is priceless .

Martin’s the only guy we need for paint on RUclips. I ruined one bike watching fake tutorials like these, then I found his channel and have painted 3 beautiful bikes since.

I painted mine with the Montana paints.
I won't use the cellulose based ones (Black range) again as it stayed wet under the clear coat/reacted with it (even though plenty of time had been left for it to dry) so I had to start again with the "Gold" Acrylic based cans.
They're great though, nice options for nozzles and a tonne of colours to choose from.
I'd definitely use them again

I gotta chime in on the effectiveness of 2K clear when it comes to spraying bikes. I think the harder finish advertised does not provide a significant durability to the paint's finish.
I've painted and built 4 frames so far. My first 2 frames were very amateurish. I use enamel based paint called Rustoleum (2 in 1 primer and colour paint) followed by a cheap 1K 2X clear coat. I didn't even sand between any of the coats. The paint did chip and flake easily as expected.
My more recent bikes I painted back to back. One frame I sprayed with the same enamel paints mentioned above, and the other I sprayed with Montana Gold metallics along with the Montana metal primer. 3-4 coats of base, colour and clear with 600 grit sandpaper between coat phases(primer-colour/colour-clear) in both bikes
I used 2K on both of those 2 bikes with about 4-5 coats followed by progressively wet sanding my way to 2000 grit.
After all of that, I managed to chip the paint work upon the bike assembly process. One of them got the surface lightly scraped while leaning on a wall. Those weren't very hard knocks either. Very disappointing!
When it comes to spraying bikes, 2K makes no significant difference over using your standard 1K clear.
I ended up using frame protection to protect the finish from chipping and flaking. It's holding up well.
This is amazing Martin, I've learned a lot, thank you. Is the 2K safe to use on painted logos and graphics? I'm painting a logo on the downtube using vinyl stencils while using different Montana Gold paints for the logo and frame. Im wondering if the SrayMax 2K could melt the fine edge between colours? Or will it be ok? Thanks in advance.
Montana gold was my go-to paint until I discovered Belton. In graffiti, I don't like Belton but for objects painting, Belton requires a lot of less sanding before clearcoating because it's a thinner paint than Montana Gold. In fact, you can check that doing a side-by-side comparison in a steel plank, Belton will look like a mirror without sanding but Gold won't.

Funny this is posted now. I just returned from the art store, looking for a can of black Montana Gold to repaint my carbon fork. One of the shop employees informed me the black color has been recalled in California, so I opted for Montana Black as this was his suggestion for the next best thing.
I'm going to give it a shot. Do you have any experience with or suggestions for using Montana Black cans on carbon frames?

I've used montana (and other cheaper paints) with ZERO, NULL problems. BECAUSE I used a 2k clearcoating. that makes the big difference (and off course a well done priming and surface preparation, that's right, I take your advices!

@@Alexpicardo it does. It really does and man the paintjob i did on it looks great. I use it mostly on city/soft gravel and it holds up great. But i did take many hours of prepping amd sanding betqeen coats

How do you make decals if you dont have a cutter machine?

Montana offer many ''collection''. Is there montane can that arent recommended for painting stuff? I like the fact that they offer soooo much colours compared to other brand (Krylon for exemple). And if I want to paint plastic with montana, is there a better montana product for plastic ?

Hi, So primed my carbon frame with Montana wash primer (light grey, pretty expensive stuff). I sanded the primer with 800 grit sand paper. I sprayed on Montana fluro yellow (color for decals). In some parts it came out ok but in others it appears like the fluro color is cracking ( looks like a dry lake bed) Did I apply too much in one coat, did I need to fluro paint to dry maybe a 30 seconds between paint strokes? perhaps is it a primer issue? Wish I could show you a picture.
Would've needed this video a few weeks ago 😅 I bought the Montana Gold colours following your recommendation, but failed miserably. All the information on the internet regarding spray painting is basically "do thin coats, wait for a few minutes, then re-coat" (which works well with most other colours), and I didn't really seem to pick up the proper technique from your videos either. Which doesn't work at all with the Montana Golds, because as you said, they just turn into dust and your paint will be as rough as an 80 grit sandpaper. So I ended up sanding the rough layer off, buying another can, re-painting from a much closer distance with thicker coats, and that gave a good uniform surface. Now I'm in the process of sanding it again for clear coating, but I have revealed some areas where the paint was quite thin and the primer is shining through, so I'll have to do a bit of touching up. Anyway, your videos were a great help for me, and I think the things that went wrong are just those that come with experience.
I faced exactly the same issues as you. I watch the DIY video on this channel and in the process of applying the Montana Gold, I did it way too lightly. So now I will have to sand the roughness away, buy another can of Montana and apply it much wetter and closer.

23:24 I got same looking chips, flaking Montana paint color: gold, on well sended primer (other non montana color sticks perfectly). I think i used wrong montana type... For graffiti on contrete walls not for steel frames xD

Excuse me... I need a help. I should sand a primer before painting color but how can I clean it after sanding ? Because primer is very porous and can absorb moisture and that can damaged my paint-job ... I don't know what to do 🚲

Hi, you've taught me alot on painting, I'm about to start doing it as a job and I was wondering, does spray can paint last or does it fade after a while, what would you recommend. Can you paint professionally using spray cans?
No you can't. Spray cans are not professional and not durable.
I don't get why some people buy these expensive "bike" spray paints. I have plenty of options at my local Home Depot, Michaels and auto parts stores. Regardless of what local rattle can I use, I still top coat with Spray-Max though.
Martin, can decals and clear coat be applied to a powder coated frame if the surface is sanded first? Or is it impossible to apply any additional finish to powder coat?
Depends on the powder used.

I am going to Paint a football helmet and need the strongest possible bond between colour an Helmet. Wich method is better, wet on wet or with sanding in between? 2k Clear to finish it up.

My advice, just change your panties if you got into a wet on wet situation.

Could someone help me understand please: What exactly does "wet on wet" mean? should a paint/ color coat still be wet when applying the clear coat or should the color coat be dry and sanded before you apply the clear coat fast wet on wet?
When he says "wet on wet" he is referring to laying down the next coat during the paint's window time which is the time after flash but before the paint can no longer chemically adhere to the next layer you spray. Once you go beyond a paints window time it can no longer chemically adhere and you will now need to sand or scuff to allow the next layer to have something to physically adhere too.

I think I'm going to paint a motorcycle tank with Momtana Gold spray paint. Can I use any automotive primer (like rustoleom etching primer or duplicolor),or should I get the Montana metal primer?
Don't use any kind of spray can on motorcycle tanks. You will not get happy cause the fuel can wash of most cheap spray cans. You need an experienced painter doing it with real stuff.
@@ETOE you need to use a 2 part clear coat like Spray Max 2k. I've painted motorcycle tanks with Duplicolor spray paint. It came out pretty good and it's held up fine. The 2k clear is supposed to be gas resistant. (As far as spilling a little gas every now and then.)
I painted my moped's tank with regular rustoleum and it has survived getting gas spilled on it quite a number of times.
I used montana spray for a long time for DIY or Painting stuff
I think montana spray can is for Artist or Graffiti jop. It's not really for bicycles. especially primer and clear coat.
i Already try 1~6 Level montnana nozzle and distance 2~30cm and Light or Thick
but this acrylic painting can is to rough on the surface.
so some time if i ues montana can need a smooth surface... i put in a spray gun and A little bit thinner paint. is be much better. and high Quality.

hi Martin, i was about to choose a SprayMAX 2k Epoxy Primer (black) on my steel frame. Do they have 2k primer, which is even more suitable? in terms of rust-protection, as you say here. I couldn't find rust colored and rust-in-the-name 2k primer in their product line. Thanks a lot, Mike

Lucky he tried on scrape first, i would have been well upset if the result he turned around was going to a customer
