Oh dear Greg, I’m guilty of the 6 and 4 step pattern. Lol. Thank heavens I’ve watched this. Time to change my style… and the advantage is my hand seems steadier now as I can anchor with my little finger..

Oh indeed dear Steph! These finger picking patterns are convenient and acceptable to many players but you can only go so far with them. If you want to move to the next level you've got to leave them behind. It's the only way you'll fingerpick with spontaniety. And yes, there will be PAIN unlearning what you already know. My experience is, it will click quickly..... you could be practising with no improvement for days and then all of a sudden it'll click. Practice the picking and allow yourself to make mistakes, like hitting the wrong string. Don't stop, just keep going. Keep your rhythm and the mistakes will become fewer and fewer as you go round the loop. Stay on one chord for say 30-40 seconds and then change when you're bored!

Attaaaack!! : As you might know, I love finger picking, AND I can't grow nails. (Maybe that's why I long for electricity. A person who is hard of hearing would not know what I was pretending to play. Ha Ha.) So I've had to adjust to be able to get sound without sounding obnoxious. I bought plastic finger picks but they don't fit right and miss strings and get tangled, etc. Q: What do you think of banjo picks?

Now that sounds like a serious piece of kit. I played one in a shop once and I was impressed!
      Welcome to the Channel.

A lot of people think that Travis picking merely means alternating thumb picking on the 2 lower strings and using any of the other fingers to pick the higher strings. However, Merle Travis actually used 2 fingers, or rather his thumb and index finger only. Watch him: Merle Travis Nine Pound Hammer 1951 ruclips.net/video/btVAuFMpNr4/видео.html .

Hi Stanley, once again thanks for sharing such background info. I watched the video smiling to myself and focusing on Merle's technique. I also play an occasional downstroke with my index finger when picking. And I notice Merle uses his lefthand thumb to finger notes on the Guitar's Low E string (I do the same sometimes on the Low G string). Thanks again Stanley, always happy to hear from you.
