Matt, SUCH a relief to find this post! I've been mucking around with, firstly a tenor and lately a baritone, for a few years. I'm still very much a beginner, but I love the instrument. BUT I feel uncomfortable with strumming, mainly I guess because I've never spent time on it, as I just love using my thumb. (Yes, I also love finger picking). It's the expressiveness of the thumb I love. But I'd thought I was a musical outsider until I came across this lesson. Thank you!

I really enjoy thumb playing as well and feel it sounds very soft and “non-harsh”.
I notice Kalei (whom I really love his style) plays a lot with his thumb too. While he can do it all, he utilizes the thumb for some pretty intricate stuff.

Great info on the details on thumb picking. I love learning about some of the skills I can add to improve my playing and learning about some of the skills I've learned on my own. Really like your videos Matt. Thank you.

Thanks for the very interesting explanation! Before watching this, I thought the difference was only that you have to fingerpick when playing faster and more notes. I had not considered the difference in tone. (For sure, keep the beard!)
