I suppose it's easier for some and harder for others, but for most of us it's an ability that comes only with attentive practice that develops satisfying muscle memory. It would take detailed sonic analysis to prove it, but I'm sure Paul's speech is coordinated with his picking rhythm. There's a magical thing that happens -- eventually -- in which musical muscle memory lets you put a repetitive picking pattern, even one with some complexity, on auto-pilot and then put foreground attention on melody notes, embellishments, and phrasing. But making music is a lot of fun even long before that point is reached.

@@jpconques Bad idea. You will never get anywhere because you just keep changing destinations and driving forever as Paul says, "Take the next left. Sweet. Now straight for ten kilometers. Lovely. Beautiful driving. "
I never thought I would be able to do this (I am left handed and play right handed) but this method of breaking it down really works for me! (I did have to slow a few parts down on the video). This has been very rewarding to learn. Once I am fully up to speed with it I am going to buy the courses. I feel that Paul Davids has the best method of teaching for me to learn from.
An extraordinarily motivating lesson! Paul, you make it look so easy! I've never got to grips (!) with Travis picking, but this lesson has inspired me. I've been doing an hour or so each day as part of my practise for a few days now. I can't do any more than that as my brain gets scambled and I lose it. Nearly there, though, just working on that ending. Had a quick try with the slap, but I'm leaving that part!! Something that sounds easy is so difficult. In the past I've always preferred the easy songs that sound hard! Any one reading this, you can do it, but you have to put the work in. What you don't see is just how much work Paul has put in over the years. Signed: an old gigging rocker, who thought he could play fingerstyle as well!
possibly the greatest tutorial I ever watched and I have been playing guitar for 30 years and I can't stop watching this over and over again so magical! Thank you!
I've been playing guitar since I was 11, and I'm now 22. I'm self taught. I taught myself to finger pick from the early parts of my learning. About 3 years ago I started to vet burnt out on the guitar, so I decided to learn the piano for a few months. After a while, I realized that I really loved my guitar and that I wasn't going to give up on it. So, I picked up the guitar again and started playing every day for at least an hour. It wasn't till about a few months ago that I started learning to how to Travis pick. I saw Chet Atkins do it, and Tommy Emmanuel, which then led me to Merle Travis. I started to incorporate this style of picking, and a lot of country blues into my playing and I have become better than I've ever been. I still have so much to learn, but I've definitely reached new highs in my guitar playing. I'd encourage any serious guitar player to learn Travis Pickin' it brings a whole new meaning to playing guitar.
Yeah. And if my whife askes me wile i am playing guitar : honney, do you like a cup of thee ? And i answer : yes dear ! I already forget where i was in the song and what chord i have to play next 😆😂 . Silly me. Greatings from the Netherlands
Merle Travis sang while Travis Picking. Thousands of guitarists play more intricate stuff than that while singing. They're musicians. That's what they do.
When I saw this video 8 months ago I never thought I'd be able to play the song. Now I'm halfway through and with practice, I'm confident that I can learn how to play this tune. You are the best guitar teacher I've ever seen, Paul. Congrats and thank you!
This video, no exaggeration, changed my guitar experience. It got me over the hump of finger picking being some intimidating thing that I didn't even know where to start learning. Now I love it. Beck's lost cause, Nico These Days. Just a wonderful time. Thanks!
I was fortunate enough to have a great guitar teacher who presented me with a study book on Merle Travis and taught me the book inside out. She knew Merle from her Nashville days and filled in our lessons with stories of the man. I never looked back, that was 1966. Then I discovered Chet.
The reason I continue learning guitar is because I am truly inspired by your playing and you teach it in the most simplest way. You are truly a blessing to us all who are on the learning path.
Could he please stop intimidating me by talking and playing at the same time without missing a beat and keeping both playing and speaking sounding totally natural? Thanks.
Never get tired of saying it. A joy to watch you at work as ever Paul. This is your best one yet. Possibly the greatest guitar lesson I've ever seen. Thank you
Music is important. Get a piano, a chord book, and some of the Hal Leonard big note song books. Don't give up, this style requires concentration but once you get it, you're gold and they can't take it away, like riding a bicycle. Listen to Joan Baez record of Silver Dagger, or watch Bert Jansch do Running From Home, its only two chords!
This is how life should be, some of us are just meant to do certain things, Paul’s teaching abilities are underrated…if only people could teach their crafts in the way you do, we would live in such a better world.
Are the responses mostly about Paul skills and not the original technique. Notice how he is not jumping around and no wasted energy in a simple understandable session. He’s obviously had many years of teaching to be able to refine his process & mastery.
I've been playing fingerstyle for years, and though I was able to teach myself a lot of cool tricks, I never learned Travis picking. It's present in so many great musical works, it's such an important part of fingerstyle technique and yet somehow I missed it. So I decided to learn it recently, and I gotta say - of all the videos online I've seen, Paul Davids' is the best one. He's a great teacher and I have been devouring his videos. Great job mate!
Awesome lesson. I've strived to teach myself to play finger-picking guitar for over 40 years. I arrived at my own style. But my finger picking often stumbles -- trips over itself. If I had known 40 years ago that there was a pattern that maintained a continuous root/fifth foundation it would have made much more sense. The "trick" seems to be that the thumb is on "auto pilot" on the 1-2-3-4 and the other picking fingers voice melody and harmony notes on the upper strings on the quarter, half, and triplet beats. Establishing a thumb "metronome" is crucial. Geat lesson, mate. Thanks! (Having said that, there's much to be said about developing ones own style. That's what makes players unique.)
that autopilot trick is so right it’s cool to think about it that way thank you. do you have any tips or advice from over the years? i’m learning finger picking now and i’m really intrigued
George, I've been playing for a little over 45 years and I have off and on chased the Travis Style. I to play fingerstyle but I too stumble. The single hardest thing I've experienced in my playing is to develop a "steady thumb" as many refer to it. Close to retirement years, I am trying to buckle down and learn several styles.
It's similar to playing piano in that respect, where you have the left hand often playing a regular pattern as an anchor while the left is playing a counter or something more freeform over it. In this case you are using one hand as two, with the thumb being your "left hand". I guess because the melodic elements are the more noticeable there is a mental tendency to play them as the "lead" but that is backasswards, as they say, because the thumb notes are being seen as secondary. With Travis picking I've always found it easier to focus on the rhythm of the piece rather than than learn a melody and then impose the rhythm on it.
Your videos are works of art. From the concept, content, execution, pace, audio quality, lighting, colors, angles etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. Thank you for sharing.
Good lesson. It is true that the beat drives the song, and when you master the Travis pick, even if it takes awhile, you are on your way to playing tons of songs. Keep practicing. Eventually it becomes automatic and you hardly have to think about it while playing. Mastering the Travis pick also helps you gauge your timing.
Every time I watch this, I'm amazed by the ease and facility with which Paul plays and carries on a casual monologue as if he's just chatting. I admire (and envy) such talent and ability. Love this lesson.
For people asking about the turnaround: You need to keep the bass going on the beats, and add melody notes A,B,C,B,A at the off beats. So it'll be like 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & 5 & 6 & 7 & 8 & G D G D G D G D A B C B A Here, G - 3rd fret 6th String, D - Open 4th String, A - 2rd fret 3nd String, B - Open 2nd String, C - 1st fret 2nd String Hope that helps!
I learned more in 7 minutes than in the last year. Your passion for music shows in every video. Thank you, good sir, for sharing that passion with us. Happy New Year and here's to an awesome 2020.
My wife thinks I have a 'man crush' on you! I love this so much I watch it every lunch break and have a snooze to it, I just wish it was longer! You really are so calming to listen to! 10/10
Its one thing to be singing a Song along with the fingerpicking, but having a completely unrelated CONVERSATION while maintaining the picking without even one tiny glitch is beyond another. ! whoa. Amazing & quite beautiful. Thank you!
Hello Terry, I’m 59. It took me a month. Can’t get the slap bit at the end. Just repetition TIL you get the muscle memory in your fingers. Start one chord at a time and get the picking pattern. In fact just as he teaches it starting with the thumb alternating the bass notes. Best of luck, you’ll get there 😊 Oh...and for the G chord just your ring finger 6th string 3rd fret ‘G’ only one finger needed and it helps the transition to the next chord
You make it look so easy! I'm convinced the whole Travis picking/fingerstyle thing is a significant stepping stone to fluidity... Just need to practice practice practice. Nice concise tutorial, thank you.

The fact that he made this in at most one or two takes without stumbling over his words or missing a note or beat is unbelievably impressive.
Anyone remembers “Bob Ross: The Joy of painting”? I have no clue why he reminds me of that guy. He took his style and ported it into the modern 2020, just instead of a brush he uses a guitar. Awesome! Your beards are pretty comparable. Now you have to start and work on your haircut. Bob Ross owns you there.
One of my first thoughts was this guy's the Bob "Happy Trees" Ross of the guitar
He’s on Netflix. Watched Bob the other day knowing I’d never be able to paint but it’s nice to hope.
“There’s no such things as mistakes - just happy accidents”.
As an artist, I create art for the eyes. This was beautiful - you created art for the ears. Right on, man.

Travis Picking is my blood being a Texan and having country music in my roots, so I must salute you for this lesson
I'm a "older" newbie, getting my first guitar for my 40th birthday a few months ago. I have been enjoying the heck out of your content as a way to keep me inspired and pushing on while the comfort level and skills slowly build. Another comment called you a "Bob Ross of guitar", and I think that is very fitting. Thank you for being a regular source of Zen, Mr. Davids.
Your still a baby, older is 70+ nowadays.
MADE ME HAPPY , HE EXPLAINED THE STEPS SO WELL WITHOUT DRAGGING IT ON AND BEATING ME TO DEATH WITH REDUNDANCY, PLEASANT CALM VOICE ALONG WITH SKILL AND CONFIDENCE, I SUBSCRIBED, I THINK I CAN LEARN TO TRAVIS PICK YEAH !! THANK YOU
Check out Mississippi John Hurt for inspiration. Good for you !
Agreed. But I think you forgot to turn the 'CAPS LOCK' off.😅✌️
Just out of curiosity did you learn it?
I'm definitely going to start building this into my practice routine.

This guy should record announcements for airlines to use in emergencies. I would be totally cool with plunging earthward at 700 kph if Paul were playing his guitar and explaining the brace position.

I want a Paul Davids voice on my GPS

Damn right
Yeah, the picking alone isn't too hard, but doing a demonstration with narration is darn impressive. That's legit muscle memory.
I just found this when trying to sort out Travis picking and I could not agree more.
The fact that he keeps moving with the bass notes really makes this, he is clearly feeling the music the whole time
I never thought I would be able to do this (I am left handed and play right handed) but this method of breaking it down really works for me!
If youtube gives out awards for videos, then this video hands down deserves one. You had my serious attention from beginning to end. Bravo!
That's the closest I've ever been to being hypnotised

possibly the greatest tutorial I ever watched and I have been playing guitar for 30 years and I can't stop watching this over and over again so magical!
Thank you dear.
Sounds beautiful! Can’t wait to get home and start practicing!
Hoe the heck is he able to play those things and talk the same time?
I freakin have problems talking and walking the same time...
Listen to Alice's Restaurant by Arlo Guthrie...he ain't proud!
In the end it’s just muscle memory.
@@angeledoray8967 True, but you have to climb the mountain to see it all, pace by pace, I,m at the foot of the hill right now, cheers

I love this.. Been practicing for hours... Can't wait to try it on an actual guitar!
Wait, what are you practicing on?
My ears just melted in happiness
When I saw this video 8 months ago I never thought I'd be able to play the song. Now I'm halfway through and with practice, I'm confident that I can learn how to play this tune. You are the best guitar teacher I've ever seen, Paul. Congrats and thank you!
This video, no exaggeration, changed my guitar experience. It got me over the hump of finger picking being some intimidating thing that I didn't even know where to start learning. Now I love it. Beck's lost cause, Nico These Days. Just a wonderful time. Thanks!
Amazing. An entire lesson while continuously playing. That was mesmerizing.
I feel like this is right up there with “doe, a deer, a female deer” - aaaaaaand subscribed. ✅
I was fortunate enough to have a great guitar teacher who presented me with a study book on Merle Travis and taught me the book inside out. She knew Merle from her Nashville days and filled in our lessons with stories of the man. I never looked back, that was 1966. Then I discovered Chet.
What book is it and is it still available?
The reason I continue learning guitar is because I am truly inspired by your playing and you teach it in the most simplest way. You are truly a blessing to us all who are on the learning path.
I have tried to play this by watching your video. And, I successfully played this several times. Thank you Paul for making me love my guitar again.

Thank you
Me: watching, thinking I can do that, must get guitar -
Paul: “And then of course you can add a slap.”
Me: brain melts down
Elle Dechene . Keep working at it. You’ll get it!
The slap is not hard. He skips a bass beat to do it'
Same
Take a separate slap guitar lesson first. Paul has a few. Then just replace the 2 and 4 bass strums with the slap.
Teaching and playing at the same time in the form of a story, that's brilliant. Thank you!
Am I the only one who is blown away by the fact that he did not stop playing at all? And he makes it look so easy!
You have such an infectious cheerfulness - wonderful 🙂
Been playing guitar for almost 40 years now but never succeeded in keeping the thumb going.... But thanks to Paul I'm getting almost there
Your videos are works of art. From the concept, content, execution, pace, audio quality, lighting, colors, angles etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. Thank you for sharing.
Talks while playing... plays the intricate notes while talking... never misses a beat. That's some legendary stuff.
Great lesson no doubt. But the actual playing is very easy for a pro, talking through it would be no problem.
I'm just impressed by how he can talk while playing so effortlessly.
Every time I watch this, I'm amazed by the ease and facility with which Paul plays and carries on a casual monologue as if he's just chatting. I admire (and envy) such talent and ability. Love this lesson.
For people asking about the turnaround:
You need to keep the bass going on the beats, and add melody notes A,B,C,B,A at the off beats. So it'll be like
1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & 5 & 6 & 7 & 8 &
G D G D G D G D
A B C B A
Here,
G - 3rd fret 6th String,
D - Open 4th String,
A - 2rd fret 3nd String,
B - Open 2nd String,
C - 1st fret 2nd String
Hope that helps!
I was dying figuring this out for a whole day and saw your comment thanks man!

Its one thing to be singing a Song along with the fingerpicking, but having a completely unrelated CONVERSATION while maintaining the picking without even one tiny glitch is beyond another. ! whoa. Amazing & quite beautiful. Thank you!
I want to play that if it takes me years. I hope it doesn't, I'm seventy now.
Good luck mate
Hope you will make it
Hello Terry,
Darn, I'll be 76 in two months - I'd better hurry up and practice, as soon as I remember where I left my guitar...
I wish to be like y’all when I’m older
