Absolutely superb entertainment today Oscar. Great to see you bring this set back to life, the Class 31 looks powerful after the re-mag and is drawing a healthy low current now. The wheel spacing seems to suit the System 6 points and diamond well just like Super 4, a great power bogie. I think the Minic Motorways range was at its largest in that Catalogue. So many pavement and verge options. If I was running that system in the sixties the though of a tank would have been too much to resist. I would have parked in the chicane and despatched my rival. Take care, all the best to you

Good morning Mr Snooze the certainly are a lot of items in that motorway range, think of the poor retailer trying to carry that many parts! Fantastic potential play value within the range, especially if you were lucky enough to combine it with the railway range.

I remember that toilet paper, they used to use it in the schools. Our teacher would send a child to the toilets to get some to use as tracing paper! It was great growing up in the 70s!
I agree, the road system and accessories look fantastic, but I think it best to leave other enthusiasts to collect this! All the best. Gordon

I got the Freightmaster Train Set for my birthday in the mid 1960s when I was about 9 or 10. It had the same A1A (TOPs Class 31) BR green loco but some different wagons including the Tri-ang Toys container wagon. It was one of the best birthday presents I ever had! I had the 1973 R.507 Freightmaster set when I was 9 years old. I have three of the sets now and filmed it with a modern class 31 with sound, although all three of my locos work of but need cleaning. My set featured the Fyffes banana van that could only be bought with that set. I have a few of those extra two. As a kid, they were filled with German troops and were always ambushed by the RM Comandoes. The set was featured in the 19th edition of the catalgue, also in 1973.

I managed to get a Freightmaster set back in 2018. I’d wanted one since I was a boy when I went to an exhibition with my dad in Keighley, W Yorks in about 1974. Bless him, we weren’t made of money, but he managed to get a second hand Blue 31 and half a dozen random wagons including a Blue Circle wagon, a BR Blue van and a GW toad, as well as some shortie Mk1 carriages 😎
However, I always remembered that set I had seen. Thus, when one came up for a bargain price in 2018, I couldn’t say no! The owner had it since a boy and only let me have it because he knew I wanted to keep it! He even threw in a Car-a-Belle with cars and two more tanker wagons! 🤪
The set I’ve got is all cardboard so must pre-date yours. I also have the prams container truck and the brake van is the shorter version whereas yours seems the slightly later version 😉 The loco is utterly spotless but I need. To give it a full service. You’d barely believe it is now 50 years old! 😅
Cheers Oscar, great fun as usual 😎👍🍀🍻

I have just bought the later set of this with the window box ('75?)and awaiting it's arrival along with the Hopper Ore set which is coming with four wagons instead of the one...Happy with my purchases considering the Ore set was the equivalent of 14 pounds.

By the time of the 31 repaint into a 422 the Australian factory had shut down. Would need to check but I think it was 1969 that the last few models were assembled from UK parts in Australia but this was limited to track only by 1969. Source was the Hornby guide website.

Absolutely fabulous Oscar, it's so beautiful to see these older models still in life. I've got all of those wagons, kindly given to me well I say me but in reality for my grandkids by my next door neighbour who had them in the late 50s and early 60s and loves to encourage them into the hobby. I liked to kid in you just had to be able to get that short burst of speed, always saying to the grandkids slow down you'll throw the wagons off. (Still it has to be done). Always enjoy the play value of these models the little extras like drop sides on wagons, I've got a couple of coal wagons that have a drop door on the sides and a parcel van where the doors open, the kids find them very playable. Enjoyed this week thanks . Eddy xx

Hi Oscar, a couple of years ago I took a deep breath and where possible, replaced all the plastic wheels on my rolling stock and locos with metal ones. It cost a bit, but the track and wheels stay so much cleaner now, rolling friction is reduced, and derailments have been almost completely eliminated. You really took me back to junior school in the 1960s - from the playground we could see (about half a mile away) the branch line to Great Dunmow leave the main line and make its way up a very steep slope. The loco was always a Class 31 and it was always pulling a short freight train, passenger services having been discontinued. Oh, I had the car ferry set for my Minic stuff, so it did make it into production (although you'd wait in vain for many of the "available later" items to appear). It was one of the best things Minic ever produced but sadly, all I have left of it is the plastic sea.

Hi Oscar, Excellent video and as always a real treat seeing those wonderful old catalogues . The Model-Land De-havilland Trident plane was made by Tom Carfrea and did indeed taxi/steer. Sadly due to high production costs and low retail orders many models from 1964 including the Minic Motorways fairground range never went into production . Tom on his retirement at Hornby very much wanted the De-havilland as a parting gift , but as with so many preproduction models , it had long disappeared from the storeroom . All the best, Paul.

Old money - 20 shillings to the pound, so 100s = £5.00. I was lucky enough to get a freightmaster set recently, minus the box. Those power bogies always seem to need fettling but run well for a while once you've got them set up. I have a lot of Minic too - including the car transporter. The top deck of the transporter slides backwards and downwards and locates in the slot of the track so that cars can drive from the track on to the bottom deck, and then on to the ramp too, to be manually lifted up into travelling position. Thanks for sharing, as always. Mike

You did an incredible job of bringing this old set back to life Oscar, it performed very well if a bit noisey. I've always been disappointed by the performance of my class 31 but after seeing this video perhaps it is time to revisit it. Perhaps I need to invest in a re-magnetizer.
    Regards, David.

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  2 года назад

Good morning David Great to hear you have one of these model locomotives in your collection. I've been told by a number of others that some of these motor bogies were bad from day one on the 37,31 and EM2, noisy and poor runners from new. The play in the bearings can be quit something even from new and then bearing supports can also begin to disintegrate with age or may be damaged when originally installed. I think there was a huge variability in the quality in production of these bearings over the years. The re-magnetizer is a great tool, it can really bring a model back to life, some magnets may lose there power over time and if a motor has been dismantled in its past life, it's a very handy to restore the magnet in motor.
      Thanks again take care.

Hi Oscar, Great video again. I have just picked up another Brush Type 2(Class 31) in mint condition. It is the slightly later version with the extra pick-ups. So now except for the box I have managed to put together another the Freightmastter set. It was always the one train set I wanted as a kid and never got. So like the one I have just put together I had to get it piecemeal. For the silver paint on the handrails a chrome pen works really well to get them looking nice again. I am not sure, but I think that the plastic bearings between the worms and the armature to stop them moving about and being so noisy must be very worn. It is definitely more noisy that it should be. I do realize because the base board is acting like a sounding board it will be noisier may be part of the cause. I think that one of the reasons why they did not upgrade this engine was that there was better competition coming on to the scene in the form of the Airfix and later Lima class 31's. So it was not probably financially viable to do so at the time. All the best,

    Hi Oscar,
Great video of the RS651 set and the benefit of a clean was very obvious. It would be nice to get all these additions to the collection in pristine condition but sadly that is not realistic which makes the refurb and subsequent TLC all the more satisfying.
I have an R357 (D5578) in what I believe is experimental blue with pale blue window surrounds. According to the ‘Bible’ it was only made in 1962 if I’m reading correctly, so pleased to think it is not common.

Hi Oscar. I have watched your latest Masterpiece Twice so I didn't miss any of your points. Using the Freightliner Set as a measure for UK Inflation over the period of the Two Featured Catalogues, the Minic Motorway Racing Car set would have been about £8.40 in 1972 and the Freightliner set around £5 in 1964/5. Looking into the Innovative ways on cost savings by Triang with paper labels on multipurpose packaging, compatibility of items from different ranges and the introduction of a New Track System using lighter gauge rails and less plastic on the sleeper beds, I can't see what the Triang Management could have done to run production more efficiently over the Freightliner Time Frame, Finally going under with a £4.5 Million loss. I beleive it was inevitable and stems from the United States implementing an aggressive inflation policy in 1965. If purchasing power is compared $1 to £1 since 1965 to now 1$ = $8.77 where as £1 = about £20 ( these figures are approx but should give an illustration of what happened ). To watch the Class 31 storming up the elevated section and going through the junctions was like seeing Geoff Hurst scoring the winning goal in the 66 World Cup, British Genius at its Best. Triang was a Victim of the United States desire to have the World Reserve Currency it wasn't down to Triang making Rubbish Products as You Prove with every episode. Looking forward to your next video. Best Wishes Tim

    135/- =£ 135/20= £6.15/- = £6.75, I think. David.
I have this set and a tatty box, it was my mother in laws second husbands. I think I have three Brush type 2’s but the bottom plates on them are broken where they screw on and one has all the copper pickups totally damaged. These were used on steel work in doubles around Sheffield. They were all looked after at Tinsley shed by the marshalling yard.

And just abover it, in the catalogue was RS614, the first proper train set I had. Suddenly I was very young again and its got dusty in here for a moment. Great video as ever, guess they dropped the container wagon to get away from advertising Triang? I understand that some of the transition was a bit fraught over which brand names were useable by successor organisation.

Super video Oscar. I noticed the cable drums had black squares on the flat bottom, are they magnets to hold them on the wagon via the wagons weight? There's some super looking stuff in that minic system as well. Cheers Rob

Hi Rob sadly no magnets in the bottom of the cable drums they are just hollow, it would've been a great way to hold them on the wagon. I think I may give that a try. Thanks again for watching glad you're enjoyed seeing the motorway range of items.
      Take care.

The artwork on the boxes and the catalogs was superb in the old days, call me crazy but the photo-realistic ones we get now just don't get the heart going quite so much.
About the prices, they are in shillings and pence in the old money. It was customary to quote most ordinary goods in shillings, only the high-end stuff was quoted with pounds (and for the really luxurious places like auction houses and prize money winnings, guineas).
20 shillings in a pound, and 240 pence (12 pence to a shilling). The old prices certainly look good, but then you have to adjust for inflation.
On my old Hornby clockwork O gauge trains, the hand-written prices are often still on the boxes, and just for giggles I tallied up an engine and tender and got 4 pounds, 8 shillings, and 9 pence, which adjusted for inflation comes to roughly $100 US, so definitely not a cheap toy.

Good morning and thank you for watching and the great information on the pricing. You're right about the pictures on the boxes/catalogues, pin sharp photographs just don't convey the potential and excitement of the goods within. They don't interact with the imagination in the same way, there is almost too much information.
      Take care.

    Hello Oscar
Tri-ang Brush Type 2 is one of my favourite engines. I think Tri-ang got the cab shape spot on, much better than the latest Hornby offering which is too boxy. I seem to remember you mentioning a modification to the spider assembly to correct any melting/distortion of the brush opening. Did you ever show that in one of your videos?
I have to confess I do miss your Super 4 layout.
    Kind regards
    Simon

Good morning Simon thanks again for watching, I think you're right terrific looking bit of modelling by Tri-ang Railways. I have modified the spider assembly and motor cap in couple of models I have. I worked from the great information in one of John's Amazing Trains videos ruclips.net/video/MckRiFeTxvQ/видео.html
      Take care.

Hi Oscar thinking back to 19 72 i got married in 19 71 and i think my take home pay i was working as a cost clerk at the tme was about £9.5 my then wife worked in a bank and she ii think earned a massive £45.00 a month of course this was before the oil crisis and just after decmalisation whic in itself caused a huge inflationary price surge-but nothing like the coming inflation which caused so many firms like the one i worked for into bankruptcy so your set by my reckoning cost about a weeks wages at that time

    Hi Oscar,
I have some of the Class 31 Brush type 2's, and they do not sound as loud as the one from your new set? They are smooth runners..
Is it possible that the plastic bearings on the armature are a bit worn or loose?
The later version with the extra pick-ups, unfortunately uses pin point axles with a metal wheel on one end, (at opposite sides) and a wiper on the axle.. Unfortunately the holes in the bogie frame (for the pinpoints to sit into) have a habit of wearing badly.. This lets the wheels get out of alignment. Especially, as the loco gets older and has a lot of running..
A better solution would have been, to use the earlier bogie, but with the sleeved wheels and the same pick-up arrangement as the searchlight wagon.. This is not prone to wear nearly as much?
Great video, and nice to see Mr. Snooze watching too.

The Minic Ferry set at 57:40 is rare, but I have seen one in operation on a very large combined Triang Railways and Minic Motorways exhibition layout in Melbourne Australia from time to time :
    ruclips.net/video/5U6Nnj07C2s/видео.html
I had always thought it was not produced like many items in the 1964 catalogue. The layout had just about everything made in the Minic range as well as a large selection of most Triang and Wrenn models.
I took lots of video of it with my then new Sony 8mm Beta video camera. However I have not been able to use the playback feature and cannot find a repairer for old technology.

Good morning John thanks again for watching and taking the time to send me the link for this terrific clip. It's a loverly group of items seen together like this. Amazing that they actually made items like these in the first place, the cost of tooling them up must have quite something. Hope you're able to find a practical solution for your Sony 8 mm tapes. There used to be quite a few people here who did conversions from the older tape formats to DVD but it was quite expensive, of course the equipment that plays DVDs is now beginning to vanish rapidly! Progress.
      Take care.
