As a pro photographer, I couldn't help but notice the early "photoshop" they used in the 1974 catalogue - it seems that they have stuck the coal onto a piece of sellotape so they didn't have to shoot the coal when it was actually falling. But this was exactly the sort of accessory that gave Tri-ang such great play value.

Hi Oscar. As I said in one of your earlier videos I got one of these for Christmas in about 1971/72. The set I got had a grey hopper wagon and did not include the grey incline piers. It had the red R457 piers. Neither did it have the converter tracks. But was otherwise the same set. Everything looks like it is coming together nicely.

Good morning Gerard, great to hear you had one of these sets, I bet you had many hours of fun with it. There seems to have been quite a few variations of the sets available over the years since its introduction.

The elevated section looks so impressive with all the siding in place and those later 3 pillar supports give it a very Victorian look, very light. As for the unloading station, I could watch that for hours :-) I must try to get one, even though there is no place for it on my currently dinky little layout, it is fascinating. ✨😊🎄

Hi Pauline, glad you like the look of the elevated section I think its worked quit well. The coal station eats up quit a lot of space, I was never able to incorporate one in the last layout sadly. I'm looking forward to having more of the point motors hooked up for even more fun.
      Have a great New Year.

What fun! 😁 I’ve waited forty years to see that ore hopper empty into a truck below, thank you so much! You even have the same catalog as me with all the wonderful things I could have had!!! 😁👍 I really wanted the helicopter truck but even as a choke it looked a bit untrustworthy. I liked the idea but couldn’t see it actually working. The mail coach! 🤤 I eventually got the breakdown crane. 🥳 Really good to see the layout develop it looks hours of fun. The coronation looked great pulling its smart coaches up the incline. Really enjoyed this. 😁👍👊😎🎄

Hi Oscar ,I got my set from a stall in the Wembley Sunday market it was brand new but was a 1977 release with the fiddly incline piers I paid £5 saved up my pocket money ,I loved it until I could get more pocket money to complete the siding underneath I discharged my coal in to a corgi hales skip lorry ok it was out of scale but to an 11 year old look cool and my shunter was a Lima 09 in pblue but the old incline piers never had provision for sidewalls so always looked a bit unsafe for my train crews hehehehe once the siding was built underneath my blue 47 would pull up with her wagons ,hope you had a nice Christmas and a happy new year ,thanks again for a great year and making Sunday good
All the best ,be safe Mark 👍🏻😊🎅🏼🌲

      @oscarpaisley  3 года назад +1

Good morning Mark sounds like great memories. Its amazing what fun could be had from this great little accessory. I imagine like your self many started without a track underneath and had many hours of fun discharging coal into toy trucks, Tri-ang supplied the original set with a mineral bunker to be placed underneath in absence of a track, a very clever idea as this set would tempt you to acquire more track!
Thanks again hope you are having a great Christmas.

This brings back memories, I had the lego style incline pillars which could be quite challenging. The ore wagon was such great play value and reminds you very much of the 'Big Loader' toy sets especially with the extra wagon underneath to collect the load again.

Hi Oscar, one of my fave videos as I’d spend hours playing with this as a kid...when the plastic rabbit droppings were lost in the carpet over time I’d load up the Lego ‘oners’ that just about worked!!!
I’d position my Corgi and Dinky lorries underneath - normally the Ferrymasters Scammel to accept the load (which went everywhere- all part of the fun!!
That seems to be what’s missing in the hobby these days- I loved all of the Lionel style operating accessories...I think Hornby are missing a trick not to reintroduce them to get newcomers back into the hobby!!
    Bring back the ducking giraffe!!!

The Lionel stuff is amazing...have you got some Triang Battle Space items including that incredible propeller driven engine??
I’ve been looking for one for years- would look great going round that new incline of yours.
Best wishes for 2021- your videos have been a real Sunday treat and the best thing on TV (with the Repair Shop too!!)

Great video with the ore wagons and loved the shot of the beans dropping onto the camera lens. I have two ore wagons but sadly sixty years ago the budget didn’t stretch to the bridge and piers so a decent helping of imagination was required.

Thanks Oscar, great feature, I'm a real fan of the gravity bridges, I have about eight as a high level section, although I've chaged the rail to Peco, which can cause issues with some stock, but the Triang hopper wagons manage it, I have quite a few now and about four of the later Consett version, when new these came with a little instruction leaflet about modifying the older gravity bridge. Great film, thank you Oscar. It's always lovely to see the detail designed into these 'toys', such as the riveted steel plating on the unloading bridge. The original coal, sometimes seen in photos in the catalogues (even being shovelled !) looks similar to the raw plastic pellets used in the moulding machines. I wonder if that's what it is - I guess there would have been a lot of it about. Great fun, thanks again and best wishes for 2021.

Hello Oscar and thank you for this new episode on the evolution of your network! Hope Santa has been generous with you! The unloading hopper offers interesting play possibilities.
In the 60s and 70s, in France, Jouef offered an equivalent system. On the other hand, watching the end of your video several times, and seeing the empty wagon jump slightly while leaving, I wondered if this hopper was not passable in only one direction.
Good luck, have a nice end of the year, and take good care of yourself and your loved ones.

I bought one of those 08 shunters around 1979 to get my free Pugh and Co wagon (not sure it's something you've ever mentioned Oscar). Anyway the loco had one of the late x03 motors and it ran so smoothly. That auto uncoupler, once you learnt the knack, was an amazing device to work shunting puzzles with. It's a shame no one has brought out a mainstream remote uncoupling device, it's such a good idea, although of course yo use this one you need to master the stops and starts! Regards Gary

Good morning Gary, it is a lovely smooth motor and gear set up on this diesel shunter. The auto uncoupler can be great fun. I think the American market may have developed the remote uncoupling a little more especially in the bigger scales but I'm sure I've seen video reviews of this feature in HO as well. Expensive I imagine!

That unloading facility (plus the hopper wagon with the metal underframe) must be one of the few remaining items in the range that go back to the Standard Track era of Tri-ang. The way the wagon unloads is uncannily like how BR eventually developed their merry-go-round unloading methods in the early 1960s.

That was fun today Oscar. The operating cars (wagons) were something I shied away from as a youngster as they did not seem realistic to me. Certainly, atfer a look at the 50s, 60s and 70s, the 80s and 90s were a good period for Hornby to improve quality to another level, with new motors and layouts, better detail and good crawl/slow running, in basic 0-6-0 models. I'm pleased with my purchase of this particular Jinty.

I had a one of those sets back in the late 80s I bought from George at C & G Models in Darlington (its a coffee shop now)... It was brand new despite being discontinued 5 years.. I found the metal spring on the Consett truck was too stiff and when empty it would trip off the rails when you attempted to reverse it back.. I bought some older grey Triang hoppers from Rolling Stock in North Shields (Its long gone too) with more worn in springs and they where no bother..

Hi Oscar. Wow, I am so impressed with how you have set up the ore wagon bridge and how neat it looks with the 3D printed extra fittings. I always loved that set when I looked through the early '80s catalogues and when an online auction site came along, I bought one. I wonder if one of those wagons is the later paint finish R732 version? If it is black on the inside, that is what it is. My set has the original internal packaging I think and there is something unusual - the wagon has a plain unlabelled box inside - never seen one like that before. There is also instructions with a simple layout plan. I can send pictures of you like?

The internal packaging sounds interesting I would love to see a scan/pictures of the instruction and the inside of the box oscarpaisley.triangchannel@gmail.com Some sets I've read were made up of separately boxed items within a box. Oscar, thanks for showing such a long lived item.
Looking at my third edition catalogue from 1957 I see that Tri-ang then only made the Hopper car as a bogie bufferless Transcontinental version R.111, so the set could only be made as Transcontinental at first.
The previous years second edition had the R.111 bogie hopper but no set. Seems to be a while later until Triang added to the description that it had an operating unloading mechanism. I wonder if the very earliest version did not have the operating parts since there was no unloader until the next year.
Merry Christmas holidays and a happy new year.

Hi Oscar, The new layout is coming along very well. We found a plastic "mineral" that works well through the hoppers. (better than the original). It is sourced from a plastic extrusion factory, and is the actual black plastic pellets used in the manufacture of polythene water pipe.. Would you like some?
Good luck keeping the late model sidewalls in place? They often seem to dislodge due to expansion and contraction at differing temperatures?
Your 3D printing efforts are very good. The printers are a great asset to modellers who need custom parts..

    • @oscarpaisley

Good morning Robin, the black plastic pellets sound interesting, someone else in the comments was wondering if Tri-ang had used pellets from the production line as the source of mineral for the sets. You right those sidewalls do have a life of there own.

Thank you for the history that you are sharing as this built moves on. Question. I am a little confused with the 08s. That is a fine example you have there. The exhaust has moved and changed shape. Is this in line with the prototype? Also, do you know when this was changed by Hornby? Martin. (Thailand) Did you also 3D print the mounts under the incline pillars?

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  3 года назад

Hi Martin, yes those are 3D printed parts I made.
I think this model of the 08 Diesel Shunter R156 first appeared in 1976 as sort of replacement for the long running R152 dating back to the 1950s. It changed to R354 in 1980 as it gained a paint finish like many other models at the time, I think the engine number change as well. I'm unsure as to how accurate either model is compared to the prototypes.

I do not live far from a plastic pipe manufacturer.. I may be able to obtain some more pellets for you? My son used to work part time there and swept a small paper bag of them up from the floor for me years ago. They are "rounded" and don't seem to jam up as much.. They also work well as ore on the Hornby "Crigglestone" conveyor belt loader (page 51 in the 31st edition of the Hornby catalogue).. One of our layouts had a Gravity unloader that filled the conveyor bin.. The same train could then be bought back down to be re-loaded from the conveyor belt.. Then it was back up the hill to unload again? Great play value... Easier than trying to park wagons in exactly the right place under the unloader too?

I had that ore set but could never find a way of incorporating it into my small layout. Was it based on a full-size version, if so presumably the wagons would have been opened by hand...?

Hi yes it definitely takes up a bit of space on the layout. I had always wanted to include it on my previous railway but just couldn’t find the space. I’m unsure of the prototype it may be based on. But I think early on wagons would’ve been operated by hand before moving on to automation.

@@oscarpaisley I have to take another look at getting some Battle space items then! Tyco is one of those makes that's had some hits, and then a lot of flops. Their Slot car sets were always top notch, and even hold their ground today! As for their trains, the earlier ones are generally really well made, sold under the Tyco name or even the Mantua name in a red box. The later, more common ones were produced after Tyco was bought up by a food conglomerate, and that's when the quality started to dip. They used a pancake motor and a system of gears that they dubbed as 'powertorque,' and they were absolute tanks, but as many of them were meant to be abused, their reliability was that of a throw away. As for their accessories, they did make some really impressive stuff! It's more reminiscent of the old Lionel O scale stuff, and the one I'm on the hunt for is the automatic unloading boxcar!
      Cheers!
