Mike, you were professor at ETSU around 2012 for sports nutrition. You were my favorite professor at ETSU and really learned a lot from you. I run a BJJ academy in johnosn city. It's awesome to see your success. Just wanted to say hey!
CT seems like the most phenomenal hype man that will make you want to go above and beyond, but perhaps not as phenomenal at not making you actually injure yourself
Man ive tried alot of his worksouts i never got injured but man. Some i never made it all way threw cause of the volume but as far as a hype man lmao i agree with you. But its STILL UR MF SET !!! NOW GET IT GOIN HA
CT's strict curl is WILD. When I was in high school I had some friends over and we were kicking it in the garage gym and one guy picked up 135 on a barbell and casually curled it and I remember it just blowing my mind. I could not comprehend that at 16 years old. Seeing CT curl 225 is proof that he is just a different animal all together. What a stud.
CT may not be the most picture perfect science based lifter, but you can't really argue that the dude is still scary strong and based on his experience it's kinda safe to say he knows what he's doing
I had the pleasure of meeting the Compton Superman in 2019 at the USPA California state powerlifting meet. CT was one of the nicest, down to earth people I ever met.
So this video looks perfect for me to post comment. As a 42 yo, I started to change my habits and life, because it took toll on my mental health as well. I weighed 290lbs, and now I weigh 200lbs. Process was slow (it took me 8 months), but I never felt hungry and I wasn't on restrictive diet. I just followed meal plan for weight loss on Onlymeal, exercised three times per week, do plank and pushup at home, increased water intake and sleep duration. I sleep at least 7 hours every day. Now I feel like I am in the best shape of my life and I am strongly motivated for more.
I feel you homie decided to hit the weights at 42 now 45 there's times you feel like your not accomplishing anything but when you take a step back and realize your getting stronger or seeing body transformation here and there it makes you push even harder the thing that's messing with my mind at this moment is body dysmorphia I'm clean bulking but start tripping out because of a little fat I'm putting on with the muscle I guess that's what they mean to trust the process and like you said your motivated for more just stand on business because you accomplished a lot in your journey 🤙
Hey, Dr. Mike! I've been following your channel for a while now and finally got the RP Hypertrophy app about a month ago. It is freaking fantastic! I'm almost done with my first Mesocycle and already seeing results in strength and definition that I haven't seen in a while. Many thanks!
CT is as old school iron as it gets and I have a lot of respect for most of his methods. Most of them. Mike makes a great point in adding that science can help too.
10:00 I love the sound of classic metal plates clattering together. Sure the technique and workout design is insane, but CT just always had that oomph that you only get when you love to train hard for its own sake, so that's something valuable to take from all this
As a teenager, the internet didn't exist, and science wasn't a thing in my gym, sadly. Another gym bro told me about "ten tens" for squats- starting with 135# for ten reps, throwing on a ten per side no rest and hit another set of ten and continue until you get to ten reps of 315# with no rest. The bar looked funny as hell with all those tens, and all the other gym members hated me for stealing all the tens.
CT was my inspiration for getting in the gym and trying to get as strong as possible. watching this was a throw back to my 13 year old self discovering him on youtube screaming classics like 'ITS STILL YOUR MF SET', ' I COMMAD YOU TO GROW', 'FUCK OVER TRAINING' and my favourite, 'DEATH COULDN'T HOLD ME' safe to say the casuals didn't like me very much

Was waiting loooong time for this one! Thanks for the history lesson Mike. Most of the ppl know CT from his late years and forgot what kind of a beast he was in his prime.
12:53 ABSOLUTE FACTS!☝️ After one Double White Glove Slap, I learned ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS set up Ground rules before the Spot... I Adore the Grind Strength 💪
Everyone is between 1-4% neanderthal, I wonder if some people pick up some of their strength genes. They say an average Neanderthal adult male would have been able to bench 500lbs. They were short, stout and absolute warriors. They found a skeleton of an elderly neanderthal with a missing arm, missing eye, ears totally sealed over but they had all healed, dude survived some insane stuff and still lived to be an old man.
Yeah, its something insane like 80% of neanderthals (based on our skeleton findings) recieved at least one major trauma in their lives, often more. The nature of these wounds reflects their lifestyle and hunting tactics where they are thought to have hunted big game, which back then would have included the dangerous big cats, like cave lions (20% larger than lions as we know them today), sabre tooth tigers, bisons, horses and other large and dangerous animals and due to the high amount of major trauma we see in the skeletons of neanderthals and their anatomy, they were built much better for head on assaults and sprints - as opposed to homo sapiens where we're built for longer distances and endurance. Also most comparisons of height to neanderthals compares modern humans to them, but actually the height discrepancy between neanderthals and the homo sapiens they shared the earth with may be less extreme than is often suggested by these somewhat misleading comparisons. Those guys were built different.
Maybe to an extent, but correct me if I am wrong but I thought ( except for a few exceptions after generations of mixing ), Neanderthal genes were specific to white people ( with them being from Europe ). Probably not the most significant factor because people like Samoans or Nigerians are some of the strongest out there. My best guess would be environmental factors leading to genetic selection, or lack thereof.
I do this with Richs feeder arm workout with 20s. But I do like you say. Slow on the way down pause and back up. It's so fricken hard compared to doing them extremely fast but the results are far greater. Great advice Mike
@@PurrfectsPearl from what i can see, CT wouldn't have make it, if doing proper forms, more slower on the eccentric , and proper movements. you already seen guys who are 10x times bigger than Mike who struggle with basic stuff when training w/ mike.
In HS I was 132, could squat 510 at absolute max, bench 275, deadlift 475. The looks I got all the time going to public gyms, or going to even powerlifting meets, were amazing.
CT is a bro kind of trainer so certified bro reps galore. He's not entirely wrong with his approach and more of a spirit animal energy kind of vibe and sure it won't make sense much but that's not why people come to him. It's like asking David Goggins to train you for the Olympia, you want his energy and principles not his Muscle Building knowledge.
he just talking shit, he obviously knows what he talking about. I followed what he did and got big, “scientific training” is not the end all to be all, from experience u know what works
The way that Dr. Mike rated CT shows how much of a gentleman Dr. Mike actually is. If anyone else talked sh*t about science the way CT did, Dr. Mike would've ripped them apart. But CT being an inspiration to multiple generations, out of respect, he focused on the good stuff.
12:50 Thankyou for addressing this. I die a little inside every single time this happens. Best case scenario is you redo that set, but if you miss the last rep on the next go round you'll never ask bro for a spot again.
The Gauntlet, or CT also calls it the ladder, is something I do at least twice a month for any muscle I’m working on that month. It’s such a great exercise and if you have a 24hr gym, you can go at 3am and be able to get all the weights you need.
13:55 always had this issue when I would take my friends to the gym and they would spot me I would tell them, " do not help unless I say" and without fail they would kill the last rep.
Oh, some new guy last week (it's January) set out a bunch of dumbbells for drop sets and words were said. Not by me, but I did add my disapproving mom look. Hogging all the weights does not fly
One thing I will say about "unscientific" sorts of time in the gym is this: Most people don't accurately know how strong they are or what working to failure is. You get the homies together and come up with some ridiculous shit in the gym and it builds the mental strength to actually know where you stand.
CT Fletcher is THE MAN... The Superman of Compton... And ITS STILL YOUR MUTHAFUCKIN SET 😅... It's just great to see CT living after all his heart issues. His strict curl record was amazing to see
yeah, well. I love Mr. CT Fletcher because of the multiple ways he has to say "fuck your pain, just keep curling" whenever he was coaching his crew on those videos. I even use some of those audios while working out.
Genetics are king. Then training intensity. Then recovery. Then time. Form only matters when you're going light or moderate weight. To a degree. Obviously I'm not talking about when people barely move the weight, but shorties work just as well as lengthened partials as long as the volume is higher. All the other differences are negligible
I used to go to a gym where we had ‘gym records.’ I had the squat and deadlift for a while. There was this lad who could curl 90 or 100, he was unbelievable, way above what I could do. I had worksets with 60, but 102.5…wow.
Here I am thinking I’m strong by pausing 245 on bench for 10 reps when he’s having a full blown convo without gasping for oxygen while pause benching 405 😭 OG 🐐
For anyone thinking of getting Versas: I definitely recommend using chalk with them. Versas are awesome, but the material gets a bit slippery when you start sweating

Hey Renaissance team, would you consider doing a video on Hampton Liu and Hybrid Calisthenics. He is one of the channel that made me want to take fitness more seriously a few years back and I think there is valuable tips in his content but I'm not a pro nor a phd Dr. of fitness so It'd be fun to see an insider perspective on that 💪 Also a fantastically worded and colorful commentary as only Dr.Mike knows how to craft, on some of Vladimir Shmondenko video as Anatoly the janitor would be super fun to watch (maybe?!)... and on the whole powerlifting and not being ginormous yet very muscular thing that comes with it.
For those that don’t understand the 10% increase he’s talking about: In weight class sports like powerlifting and strongman if you have already topped out your weight class and can’t add any more muscle tissue all of the strength increases will be from increased adrenergic signaling and increased nervous system responsiveness. If you don’t go up a weight class and add muscle tissue it won’t do anything more than that. And the 10% is extremely accurate.
I got versa grips. Biggest improvement are my pullups. Since you also say HaaNG LooooW the rock solid bar attachment versa grips give let me focus on form and big range.
would be interesting if mike comments crazy lifts from crazy strong but not so muscular ppl like anatoly. or how magnus midtbo can row almost as much as eddie hall and general more about the connection between muscles, strength and sport
Given that tension is the only thing muscles really understand, all things kinda end up being equal at the end, as the research has shown: You can lift lighter weights with good technique and more control OR less control with bad technique but more load. Higher reps for greater time under tension or less reps with greater range of motion and slower tempo. It’s best to try all of it as long as staying safe from injury and ability to recover.

He is one of the channel that made me want to take fitness more seriously a few years back and I think there is valuable tips in his content but I'm not a pro nor a phd Dr. of fitness so It'd be fun to see an insider perspective on that 💪
Also a fantastically worded and colorful commentary as only Dr.Mike knows how to craft, on some of Vladimir Shmondenko video as Anatoly the janitor would be super fun to watch (maybe?!)... and on the whole powerlifting and not being ginormous yet very muscular thing that comes with it.
For those that don’t understand the 10% increase he’s talking about:
In weight class sports like powerlifting and strongman if you have already topped out your weight class and can’t add any more muscle tissue all of the strength increases will be from increased adrenergic signaling and increased nervous system responsiveness.
About time dr mike 😊 ,ct is a legend ❤
Has mike done a hodge twins review yet? That would be a hilarious episode
would be interesting if mike comments crazy lifts from crazy strong but not so muscular ppl like anatoly. or how magnus midtbo can row almost as much as eddie hall and general more about the connection between muscles, strength and sport
I partially tore my biceps curling 200. I was trying to get to curling body weight which for me at the time was 215.
I was introduced to CT Fletcher when I saw him train with Frank Medrano.
Short & full range are both equally important.
Given that tension is the only thing muscles really understand, all things kinda end up being equal at the end, as the research has shown:
You can lift lighter weights with good technique and more control OR less control with bad technique but more load.
Higher reps for greater time under tension or less reps with greater range of motion and slower tempo.
It’s best to try all of it as long as staying safe from injury and ability to recover.
Hey doc whats your view on matt wenning claiming to have a doctorate?
