- Is the 1968 Dodge Charger R/T The Coolest Muscle Car Ever?
Dodge Charger R/T. In todays special we get to have a close look at a 1968 Dodge Charger R/T muscle car - admittedly not a factory R/T, but a great tribute conversion from an 383ci 4 speed Dodge Charger to a thunderous, 502ci Hemi V8 powered monster.
The Dodge Charger R/T was the muscle favoured by villains, rebels and badboys alike. Could it be the coolest muscle car ever made? Watch now as we get this super badass car out on the road to find out what its all about, while having a chat with the cars owner Max.
Many thanks to Max for the opportunity to film his cool car.

My dreamcar!!
Its near the top of my list too 😍. Was such a cool car to experience even just as a passenger
Yes, a black 68 charger is the coolest car ever. Everyone knows that, it's scientifically proven.
Now that you asked, yes, yes it is the coolest car ever!.
What a monster! 8 litres 😱. Definately one of the most intimidating front ends of any car. Top work!
Agreed! Only bad boys need apply 🤣. Favourite feature?
@@CraigOnCars got to be the front grill! 😎
The '68 is the ultimate classic muscle car.
I am one of the fortunate few to own one, a B5 blue, 426 hemi, auto car with the 3.54:1 geared sure grip rear end.
FYI, the consol option was available with both the base charger ( 318 v8 and 383-2 and 383 4 barrel v8 ) and the R/T ( 440-4 barrel and the king Kong elephant engine, the 426-8 barrel hemi ).
As an owner of a 68 Dodge Charger, I wholeheartedly absolutely agree that yes, yes it is the coolest car ever with zero doubt.
The 1968 Dodge Charger R/T isn't just the "Coolest Muscle Car Ever" he is the Coolest Car Ever.
Second generation Charger (68,69,70)
Is the most iconic car.
69 is the best, then 68
I love this car so much it's a beautiful car .👍
68.....has the best front grill....I like the 69..70..tail light too..... but the 68 rocket booster tail light is very desirable...
Best looking car ever!
My dream car!!! And it’s definitely, not only the coolest, but the most beautiful car ever made. I tear up on almost every Charger video I watch, and this one wasn’t different... heheh I love it!!
I apologise for causing tears 🤣
FIRST 200mph car in history. FIRST WINGED CAR WITH A SPOILER BASED ON THE V2 ROCKET OF VON BRAUN AND IN 1969 REACHED 345kms with A HEMI ENGINE BASED ON THE CHRYSLER AIRCRAFT ENGINE OF 1945..AND THE CHARGER DAYTONA WAS A STREET CAR RACED ON BY PLY TYRES SANS RADIALS..BUDDY BAKER BROKE THE 200mph RECORD IN 1969..
Could have bought a Daytona with a Hemi in the 80s, it was up for £995 but I had no where to park it( a lot of places in the U.K. didn’t have garages big enough) so I had to pass on it 😢.
Very nice tribute to one of the automotive icons of the era, and a beautiful specimen indeed. I had the foresight of purchasing a fixer-upper '69 R/T back around 1989 for $800. I plowed about $10k into it and sold it in 2000 for about what I put into it. Sold it too early and wish I kept it!
Luckily, the car doesn't know that it's not a factory R/T.
Thank God the kept this one original.....
Car shows like : Overhaulin, Fast N Loud, Kindig Customs are destroying all those beautiful American muscle car history with those idiotic big and wide wheels !!
Not just '68. 1969 and 1970 are just as beautiful, powerful, and badass, because they're still the same thing. Nothing beats the 2nd gen Dodge Charger R/T. But yours is a MONSTER for such!
100% the best looking car .
The looks of it are just amazing. Such a cool design.
Best looking car ever made
If you want to know the original color just check the fender tag on the car it it is still there. :)
It's Mopar or no car !!!
Coolest car on the planet.
This car, Year, model with a 426 Hemi is the hottest car on the planet in any Age or decade !!
With 4 speed. 🙂
You must make the locals stop and stare!! Super cool my man ))
It has been known to happen! Some of my videos have out takes at the end and you get to see peoples reaction to the various cars and the filming🤣
This was not a muscle car. Too big, expensive, and heavy. But it was beautiful in the most sinister way, and with a 440 or Hemi would have been a formidable performance car.
The best presentation of a Charger in a movie is as driven by the bad guys in Steve McQueen’s Bullitt. When preparing to film, it was discovered that McQueen’s 390 Mustang GT wasn’t close to being able to stay with the totally stock 440 Charger RT. The Mustang’s suspension and drivetrain required heavy modification to survive that legendary chase through the streets of San Francisco.
The 69 Charger in Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry was equally awesome.
It’s not a muscle car? What ? This is the exact definition of a muscle car. Maybe you’re confusing muscle car with pony car?
Second generation Charger was/is definitely a muscle car.
I'd always imagined driving a Charger through the UK would get you some kind of ticket for "being too intimidating".
The ‘68 Charger is the most gorgeous, iconic and pure American muscle car ever built! Those sexy coke bottle curves are very enticing…. Nothing comes close to a second gen Charger…..
I did fall a little in love with it!
If darth vader drove a car that be it.
Dodge was down in sale's.. aimed at a younger car buyer.. changing to keeping up with mustangs 200k a year sale's. Camaros sale's at 100k. A year.
20 k Dodge sale's in those days.
Fast forward 60 years.. Dodge rare as a hens tooth.. mabye 2000 around nowadays
Ya know the mullet is exactly what he should be wearing while driving a charger
Fantastic Car 68 Charger Love it .
The best car ever - 1968 Charger R/T black on black on black. I know because I owned one.
I take the 69 the one in the photo I know because is my R/T 4 SPEED
IT IS THE COOLEST MUSCLE CAR EVER. PERIOD.
Thats a good point well made sir!
The 1968 Charger R/T had only one engine, the 440 Magnum with factory 375 hp. Great work guys!!!! Great car! You could get the console with 383. But to be an R/T it had to have a 440 or 426 Hemi.
And the engines were turquoise, not orange.
Just seeing that '68 Detroit beauty, roaring the U.K. in 2023 is lovely.
And lets hope it continues!
My dad had a 68 Dodge Charger R/T with a 440 and 4 on the floor. It was red with a black vinyl top, though. Great childhood memories of that car and recovering it after it was stolen.
The A727 TorqueFlite could never be described as a "slushbox" - it's probably on of the best 3 speed automatics ever built.
Centre console was available on all 68 Chargers and also with 4 speed. 727 auto transmission was one of the toughest in that day. 8-3/4” rear end I assume 3:23 suregrip? I love your car . I’m from Canada and been a Mopar guy forever. The only thing I’d change are the aftermarket exhaust tips back to factory. And please don’t cut the hood. A mini tub to fit bigger rubber under her maybe. She is a beauty! My first Mopar was a 69 Charger. Cheers.
The first car that I bought at age 18 upon high school graduation was a 1970 Dodge Charger R/T in Plum Crazy (purple) with white top & interior, and the 440 Magnum engine. So fast. Could spin the tires for blocks (not that I ever did that...). Cost in 1976? $500. Beside awful gas mileage, the only other down side (for me) was that guys were always trying to steal it. One morning my father came out the front door of the house and found a guy sitting in the driver's seat. He was able to break into the car, but he didn't know how to start it!
yes. I had a 383 that was dk green with a white and dk green interior. Getting rid of it is my biggest car related regret.
We all have one of those in our past
Yes Sir, this is truly an interesting car. Not these modern cars with all these electronical stuff in it. Those cars, these oldtimers from late 60's or earlier are the truly interesting cars. Thanks for sharing!
And thank you for watching!
@@CraigOnCars You are welcome
Very cool almost like the ride in Bullitt that and the Mustang were bad ass cars
It looks perfect.
This and the '69 Roadrunner / GTX are the consummate muscle cars IMHO.
Beautiful car, I bought a brand new 1968 Charger R/T 440 Magnum and I still have it today. Its red with a black vinyl top. It's been a very fun car to have and both of my boys are looking forward to the day I give it up to them. Thanks for sharing your beautiful black 68.
Sounds like its very much part of the family. Lucky boys i say! Thanks for sharing 👍
Console was found on all models of the 1968 Charger, not just the R/T. I own a real 1968 Charger R/T, bought in 1991. Unlike a lot of other folks, I resisted the urge to sell it, even after getting some ridiculous offers. Mine was a 440 with automatic, console, and 8.75" rear with open differential, four-wheel power drum brakes. I still have the 440, but have obtained a correct 1968 426 Hemi, 18 spline four speed with console mounted Hurst shifter, new Hemi rear springs , torque boxes and other Hemi reinforcements, correct disc brakes and a Dana 60 with 4.10 Sure Grip. I also installed the factory tic-toc-tach.
As an American it makes me smile that the "car guy gene" is still going strong. Beautiful car. Never sell it.
Back when I was 15 in 1996, I worked a temporary- hire a student summer job of helping a family move. Towards the end of the job, the owner opened the small garage and I saw the partially visible hideaway headlight grill with "Charger R/T" on it. I saw spellbound. I asked the owner some questions. A short while later a neighbor asked him if he would sell the "old Dodge." He sold it for $1100.00. It was a 440 automatic car. Originally metallic brown. 😮 Now I am 42 and own a sweet 1968 Barracuda fastback powered by a 400 based 512 stroker backed by an A833 4 speed. 👍
69 is the most popular. I want a 69 with 68 tail light panel. I have a 66 383 727 Charger and love it.
You guys are having too much fun. I had a '68 Charger back in the mid 70s. I got it for under $500 US dollars and let me tell you, it was a wreck. Long story short, me and five friends put her back together. Mine was a 383 w/4 speed manual transmission. We replaced the drive train with a 383 magnum engine with matching tranny. We replaced fenders, quarter panels and the trunk lid. The only decent part was the hood. I miss that car every time I watch videos like this, bringing back the glory days of "muscle car" world.
Wow what a beauty..👍
The center console was available on the base model charger, presumably as an extra cost option. I bought a 69 model with my high school graduation money in 1983. Not an RT, just a standard charger, dark green, green vinyl top with a green interior. She had a 383 four barrel with an automatic and she was infact badass. Sure wish I still had her, she could probably fund my retirement. Cool Video , God bless.
Total bad ass Mopar.....
Love it
That is the coolest thing I've ever seen!
Isnt it just! Sorry if you now want one 🤣. Favourite feature of the car?
@@CraigOnCars love those headlights!
Agree they are very cool. It really punches you into your seat when you floor it 🤣
Back then, you ordered your car of choice built to your own specifications. They were all the coolest.
Yes it is the coolest car ever.
Gorgeous car. My favorite muscle car of all time is the 68 Charger. It was love at first sight.
Yes I agree, this was my 1st car at 16yrs.old mine was a 440 Magnum w/727 torque flite atomatic
I wish here in the UK we had the choice of such cars at 16/17 years old!
@@CraigOnCarsNot sure about 17 year old kids driving 7.2 litre engined cars!
It's so great to see one of Mopars best muscle cars being driven and enjoyed in England. So many times our north American cars get the knock from Europeans. You've got a real beauty there so take care of her and have fun.
You'd be surprised how loved American cars are in Europe and in the UK. We love the cars you guys didn't as well. Station wagons and 4 door cars.
A beautiful car , one of the greatest cars you'll ever see.
We had a black on black 4spd 68 R/T charger survivor car. I worked on most all muscle cars and a lot of euro sports cars, and that charger remains my favorite of all time. Nothing sounds as good as a cammed 440.
Agreed, coolest car ever. I'd like to have that 383 and 833 four speed that came out of it.
I owned a deep blue 1968 Dodge Charger with. A White vinyl roof. It was gorgeous, fast and shiny! I’ll regret selling it for the rest of my life!
It was originally green. I know the car and the guy who restored it. It was also my wedding car.
That's not noise,, it's music!!
That was purring perrffec
As the owner of a 68 charger RT, I have to answer the video title question.... Yes, with zero doubt, absolutely yes.
Agreed !
My pick would be the '70-'74 Cuda, but yeah, you could make a case for the Charger R/T
Beautiful and bad ass.
Recently purchased a part restored 68 Charger. Body and engine lovely but I am restoring the interior and replacing the suspension with after market parts. It’s all too vague for me at the moment I’m afraid. Thanks for the video and like you it’s my favourite muscle car, describing a Charger as stunning is a massive understatement.
I also got one two years ago rust bucket Some day I’ll start on it. Hope yours goes well. If you haven’t heard FBBO is a Mopar group that can help you out
Thank God for Chrysler!
Sounds fantastic! Love the 2nd gen Charger, my favorite is 1969,
Beautiful. I can't wait to have mine ready for the street.
Haven't watched vid yet and hafta say yes!!! 68 Chargers have always been my fav, since my first (of 5) back in high school. I loved them before everyone else did LOL!!! I hate that they've become so popular and expensive because I NEED one more before I die!!! Even if they weren't worth $10, I'd still love and want them. Most gorgeous design of a car...ever, imho...
Wow, you’ve owned 5?! Baller 🤙. Wish these cars were more attainable and available here in the UK.
@@CraigOnCars haha... Yeah, but after my first one, the rest were all complete rust free non-running projects I picked up in the late 80s and 90s. Never paid more than $500 for any of them. I miss those days when they werent so popular!!! Im sure they're tough to get.in the UK!! But for the average guy with an average budget here in the states, its almost impossible too!!
I dont know if its just me but i fee that when u get in one of these old school muscle cars u feel like a million bucks lol i had a 68 cougar (not cool like this) n i felt so much joy to drive it everytime i pull in for gas i would get thumbs up best feeling ever 👍
I completely agree!
Great video!
The center console was an option and could be ordered with both, a manual or an automatic transmission.
Thanks for the feedback and for confirming - i couldnt quite remember in the moment but knew there was something 🤣. Glad you enjoyed! I genuinely fell in love with the car
@@CraigOnCars Understandably. I own a '68 and a '69.
Nice, bet they look amazing sat together! 👍
You could have a 4 speed, floor shift only of course, with or without the console, but if you didn't spec the console with the automatic you got a column shift...i.e. no floor shift auto without a console
Leave it the way it is rims and tires look great
I agree the car looks amazing
Grocery getter,I would say it gives FAST food a whole new meaning.
That is STUNNING!!! My dream car!!!!
I’d love one myself 😍. Such a memorable experience being in one
You boys get it. Nice machine.
Cool video, cool car !
Thanks for the feedback, glad you enjoyed! Such a brutal machine. Will bring you more cool cars soon 👍
Meanest of them All !! ( Best Cars Ever made ❤ 😍 )
It certainly was menacing when seen in rear view mirror behind me when i was driving away after filming!
As much I love the American Chargers, and especially the '68, I do think the Aussie E49 Charger is the best muscle car, a gorgeous looking car and it would comfortably beat any V8's on the road.
No f#7% way you dreaming 😂 the 440 is so strong n fast you have no idea what your talking about it man keep driving 4 n 6 cilinder save gas for my v8 😂
nice to see people who appreciate mopars,u bloaks have great taste, and as usual another mopar that has off the chart coolness!
So so cool!
For me it was the 70 Charger RT SE. the 68 and the 69 were awesome. But I just loved that 1970 model. ❤️
A buck sixty without breathing hard. Bad to the bone.
Why anyone would turn a four speed muscle car into an automatic is beyond me !
vice versa maybe
Auto is much better to drive in traffic where you don't have to constantly change Gear
My dreamcar ever❤❤❤
YES
My favorite. Car. Challenger. I love that beautiful. Car
A friend that I grew up with owned one of these. We were rooming together in Austin in 1974, and he let me borrow the car to run some errands. I was driving along the Drag by UT, when I spotted Karen Darvin, a beautiful redhead, hitching in the opposite direction. I turned around as fast as I could --- so fast, in fact, that I hit a fire hydrant costing me $335. That was 8 months rent and a few cheeseburgers in those days. Surprisingly, she was still there when I got back, so I gave her a ride to the mall. That was the last time I drove it, and the last time I saw the redhead in person. But the following year, I saw her in a magazine. She was Bruce Springsteen's girlfriend. It was a great car.
Wow! Thats a memory for sure, thanks for sharing. Bonus points for going back to offer her a ride after you must have been worried about the damage and what your friend would say
Spoiler alert :it is
Yup! Very cool. Excellent styling. And fast!
Do you know, the Jensen Interceptor is the tailored, silk suit version of the Dodge Charger?
I have one on the channel coming soon, stay tuned!
Absolutely !
As long as it has a Hemi
I'll take a 440 lol!
The 4 speed has been replaced with an... automatic?? Laaammmme
slower with the 4 speed. young guys like the 4 speed as it is supper cool but with more power the 4 speed is a handicap.
Definitely one of the coolest
If this was built from a 383 and made to an R/T, you may not have the factory sway bars that are standard with a real R/T which may be why it feels "boaty" around corners.
The europeans never came up with anything this cool in a car.
A company in the UK made a sports car with a Chrysler 383 big block but I forgot the name.
@@0004612The Jensen Interceptor had a Chrysler 383 originally. Later cars had the 440, and even the 440 six pack on a few.
@@stephenholland5930 yes, the Jensen, thanks ! Sounds like a good time ….tire smoke and all
Man that's a sweet Charger.
Only thing better is a 69. Lol
I just like the 69 grill and tail lights better.
Beautiful car..
I like the 68 more :D got those round tails, open grill...so beach boys hehe
got some nice for you, its ur 69, you tube link no stress.hope u love it like I do😎..ruclips.net/video/UIlJNzSXUZk/видео.html
I was 17 in 1975. My first car was a 1969 Dodge Charger I purchased in 1975 for $1,200. Nice car, 383 magnum, 56,000 miles. I owned it for a year and a half. I still have the bill of sale from when I sold it in June 1976 for $1,000.
Thanks for sharing the drive.🚀
71s RR, 71 Baracuda, 69 Camaro RS/SS, 70s Challenger and 69s Charger. But also 71s Coronet Station, 71 Plymouth Satellite Station, Ford Torino 70s, 72s LTD.. toooo much to list of real american dream cars..
