I'd say if not one of the dumbest penalties, certainly the costliest penalty in NFL history was at the end of the AFC Championship game between KC & NE where the Chiefs intercepted a pass to win the game to go to the SB except one safety lined up in the neutral zone. Andy Dalton out, AJ McCarron Bengals QB, led 16 pt comeback after trailing 15-0 after 3 quarters. Steelers 1st and 10 at Bengals 47, 22 seconds left, no timeouts. Even watching in real time I could see Burfict loading up to take a shot at Brown's head although the pass was uncatchable. The things is that even with the Burfict penalty, Chris Boswell was looking at a field goal of 50 or 51 yards....within his range, but hardly a gimme. But then Pacman Jones lost his mind too. I think I recall he made contact with one of the officials (although Steelers coach Joey Porter came onto the field and baited Jones into that penalty...Porter should have gotten flagged, too, and this is a Steelers fan here). That turned it into a very makeable 35 yarder for Boswell.
