Woodturning - firewood or Gold? downed by thunderstorm, monster walnut log begets a gorgeous bowl!

- Bowl was super wobbly on my lathe, throughout most of the turning for two reasons - first because i turned the rough cut log without much trimming, and second, it had a really nice top curve with the bark that i wanted to incorporate into the finished bowl…but that meant dealing with this hideous wobble when finishing both the outside and the inside of the piece!!! Had to go over sections more than i would have otherwise because of that.
means i probably need to consider bolting my lathe down to the floor ;)
after all that, i think it turned out really nice.
let me know: what do you think? let me know in a comment.
Wood is live edge walnut, turned on Grizley lathe.
Sanded down to 800 grit and finished inside and out with Dr. Kirk’s Scratch Free.
food safe finish and look great.

Woodturning can be very dangerous if not careful - so don’t try this at home! - Хобби
Beautiful
Thank you 😊
I like the grain of this wood, leaving just enough bark to make it interesting. Nice work
Thanks 👍
Glad you left the live edge on it, it's beautiful.
Glad you like it! Thanks 😊
Wow, so beautiful! A piece of art! I loved it! ❤
Thank you so much!☺️
Nicely done. Walnut is such beautiful wood and you did it justice.
thanks so much!
Wow what a beautiful bowl - impressive how you dealt with the off balance while turning! 🙌👌😀
Thank you very much!
Very nice. I like the way you left the bark on it, and out of round at the top. Cool👍
Thank you! 😊 Glad you like it!
only mother nature can produce amazing figure. Of course it takes craftsman to exposé the figure well done
thanks so much!
Absolutely stunning ! Thanks for sharing. GBU

Very nice work. I like the shape not being what most people might consider "traditional". 🙂
Thank you! Cheers!
Great piece.

Saya menyukai pekerjaan seni ini tapi tidak mampu memiliki mesin bubut seperti ini..
thank you 😊
Like 👍👍👍
Thank you 👍
If you don't wanna cut it balanced, you could add temporary weight to the lighter side to stop the whole thing jumping around.
that’s a good thought! how’d you think it would work best without also possibly ruining the bark/live edge?
Wait with bolting your lathe down, until you know exactly where you want it. 👍
that could def apply to more than lathes ;) lol
WoW. That’s an amazing work of art. So beautiful. What was it that you put on the live edge?
Thank you - i saw someone use superglue once, thought i’d give it a try - worked pretty well i think
@@scottsdalewoodworks Yes indeed it did. You’re very talented.
Nice piece was that a burl looked like it turned out beautifully
regular walnut, not burl. but did have a really nice grain, maybe a little figure in it.
thanks!
Nice bit of timber but a bit to much of the bottom
thank you. that is the trick isn’t it? i erred on a little weight at the base with the flared shape to give it some added stability.
Yes, you should secure the lathe...it is dangerous...if it slides to the edge and you instantly try to prevent it from falling, you could suffer severe injury. Also it would be a shame to ruin a nearly finnished product.
for sure!
I can’t turn with gloves on past roughing it. I need to be able to feel the surface bare handed.
i hear you. when i do wear gloves, i wind up taking them off often to check for high spots or subtle tear out
Hallo salam kenal bos ❤❤
cheers!
This is an awesomely beautiful bowl. Just a hint here. Never leave bark on the wood because it will eventually rot off and destroy the art.
thank you, and thank you for the tip 👍🏼
No it won't I have made live edged bowls and once treated last forever, don't take my word for it check out some of the true masters on this platform and look at some of the most beautiful work of arts and worth thousands, your be surprised .
You can't work with gloves, it might get screwed up.
thank you.
Yeah if one more person tells me to blacksmith or blow glass with gloves on my head is gonna melt 😂😂😂
do you have a shape in mind or do you just like taking off wood? the proportions just aren't right. the base is way to small and it looks top heavy. the wood grain and color looks great, but the shape is just a waste of wood.. sorry but to me, it's just ugly..
every once in a while you get a hater. thank you for your comment.
@@scottsdalewoodworks .. it has nothing to do with hate, I just don't like this one piece for the reasons I mentioned.. but it was just my opinion and just a comment..
Yet another turner who thinks that they are good enough to get away with not speaking, it makes for a rather dreary video, even the really talented tuners normally describe what tools, finishes and techniques they are using .
Lol ….not at all, i think my voice sounds very annoying, and i’d probably lose more people who’d then prefer to not hear me at all…the very talented turners take time to talk about what they do because they really know what they’re doing, and can teach others. i’m still learning ;)
Beautiful
