Turning the Tasmanian Devil - a myrtle burl from Tasmania, took three months by boat, looks killer!!
Просмотров 2,5 тыс.3 месяца назад
Struggled with the final design / shape. Initially wanted to turn a bowl, but as i got into the piece, the “burl” grooves were quite deep in a couple locations, which would have led to a much smaller bowl size than i wanted - so i went with a hollow form / vase. Also decided on a twist with the final shape and made it slightly inverted/cushion top, as a nod to the land “down undah”. thanks agai...

This is was super fun to turn. JIK you didn’t already know, but cocobolo is a very fragrant wood, slightly wet when i turned this, never expected it to smell so good - soft smell like a nice cologne. just couldn’t stop! and the grain- wow. Think i found my new favorite wood for turning. ;) This candy / nut bowl, also great as a ‘catch-all’ has a slightly over rounded side wall, making it easier...

Woodturning a Holey Walnut Bowl - a difficult finish, worth it?
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.6 месяцев назад
I wasn’t sure about this wood from the beginning. I knew it could have a large void, and so wanted to see how it would look - if it didn’t come completely apart! First challenge was to decide on mortise vs tenon and then select the best location for the tenon. You can see in the video how i had just enough wood to get adequate purchase with the chuck to be able to turn safely. Once i turned the...

Wood is olive wood, turned on my new Laguna Revo. Sanded down to about 2500 grit and finished inside and out with Odie’s Oil food safe finish - looks amazing. The knot on the side provided a small challenge whether or not to incorporate it into the piece. Decided to do so, and filled it with epoxy resin full of olive wood sandings to match. Woodturning live edge hickory bowl - bark on only one side??
Просмотров 1,9 тыс.7 месяцев назад
I saw this irregular cutoff i had from another project - and i started to think: would it be possible to turn a bowl with live edge on only one “side” ? So i chose this piece, because in order to make that work, the bowl can’t be round. Next decision was square/rectangle vs oval. I went with the curvy option. I think it’s more appealing when it comes to live-edge. but then, i’ve never tried (or...

    Yet another turner who thinks that they are good enough to get away with not speaking, it makes for a rather dreary video, even the really talented tuners normally describe what tools, finishes and techniques they are using .

      Lol ….not at all, i think my voice sounds very annoying, and i’d probably lose more people who’d then prefer to not hear me at all…the very talented turners take time to talk about what they do because they really know what they’re doing, and can teach others. i’m still learning ;)

      yeah, had thought if void was too large that it wouldn’t work or would need resin. (haven’t done resin casting yet, so that’s another thing) mostly wanted to challenge myself with keeping a large void and still have an aesthetically pleasing, if not also somewhat functional bowl.

    G’day, sorry but I need to ask what you put the bowl in to dry out( the blue chips). Didn’t have sound on while viewing. I’ve noticed when I turn African olive , it doesn’t seem to matter how long since it was cut. It’s always a little wet still, like the bottom of your bowl..olive never disappoints in grain patternation. Why did you leave it so thick for, olive turns down really well. Yes the knot looks great. Thanks for sharing.

    • @scottsdalewoodworks
      @scottsdalewoodworks 6 месяцев назад

      Good questions: first - i’m using desiccant beads to help even out the drying process, it often works well to reduce cracking. I live in Scottsdale, Arizona, it’s super dry here. i left the bowl first turn intentionally thick so it would dry maybe a little slower, and therefore with little to no cracking.

    • @DanaOredson
      @DanaOredson 5 месяцев назад

      @@scottsdalewoodworks Maybe also more importantly, if you leave the rough-turned thicker, you have more margin for truing up the bowl once dry, since it will warp.

    I have a suggestion. Instead of gluing your layers of wood together to start why not turn tour first layer and have a ring where you can glue the next layer. then cut out the center with a parting tool. and so on as many layers as you choose. saves all the cutting out of the center. makes a lot less work. You will have small circles to play with after.

    Oh yes if you are using a screw chuck or face plate, after pre-drilling your holes put some CA glue down in the holes to give that wood on the screw much more stability and you will have less problems I think with it stripping out
