Woodturning an olive wood burl bowl

- Originally intended to finish the interior after turning a mortise, but going deeper to get adequate chuck purchase would have compromised the shape and depth of bowl i wanted
So in the end decided on this small siberian elm cabochon that i turned and glued to the base, and then used that to finish the bowl inside.
think that actually turned out rather nice.
as for the catch…well, i did think the bowl was ruined, but it amazingly landed on the large pile of shavings under the lathe, which saved it from dings or cracks. Couldn’t believe it.
what do you think? let me know in a comment.
Wood is olivewood burl, turned on Grizley lathe.
Sanded down to about 1200 grit and finished inside and out with Dr. Kirk’s Scratch Free.
food safe finish and looks great.
Will be up for sale soon on my Etsy page. see link below.

Woodturning can be very dangerous if not careful - so don’t try this at home!
Nice work I really like it 👍👍
thank you! I'm glad you like it
Beautiful piece! Almost had a heart attack when it flew off the lathe!
thanks!! you and me both!
@@scottsdalewoodworks I love how you work with live edges, gives the pieces so much more character than using resin or smoothing them out
thanks so much. i enjoy that part as well.
Nice save, thanks for sharing. Full view and Like 👍

Nice work and nice save from the launch. I believe that is Brown Mallee from Southeastern Australia. It's a beautiful piece.
