    This 100% reclaimed bench is a piece made for Carolina Shoe who is planning on using this for all sorts of different display purposes. They tell me this bench is going to be more well traveled then me. So this was constructed from a total of about 8 pallets (Red Oak, White Oak, Pine, Poplar, Aspen, Mahogany, Cherry, and Maple) along with some threaded rod thru bolts which were abandoned in a dumpster when the fire protection was being renovated at a local retail store. The pallet slats were left rough on the underside, front, and back to add a really cool texture and also some history to the piece. The threaded rod is mostly aesthetic, but it'll also add some structure to the piece. Hand engraved "Carolina" and "Built For Work", finished with 6 coats of lacquer.

    When you hauled out the carving tools, my first thought was "well, now you're just showing off"

    Have you ever tried finding some heavy duty pallets? I found some really good industrial pallets used to ship airplane parts. The frames are 4x4s and the slats are 2x4s. They're difficult to break down without a reciprocating saw, but we'll worth it. A lot of the wood turned out to be maple.

    great build. is the threaded rod totally nesessary?

    • @NOLAMarathon2010
      @NOLAMarathon2010 7 лет назад +4

      I don't know the answer to that question, but I'll just speculate. If he didn't have the threaded rod, I don't think the bench would undergo a failure. I do see the possibility, however, of a few of the seat boards or side boards opening up just a tad, due to internal stresses. You saw how during glue-up some of the boards were still not flat even after having gone through the planer. So, the threaded rods were probably provided to prevent that -- open spaces between adjacent boards -- more than to prevent a failure.

    • @JackmanWorks
      @JackmanWorks  7 лет назад +2

      Definitely not. Check out my workbench build if you haven't yet, very similar process and I haven't had a single seam pop on me yet and I beat on the thing haha. That was really just for looks.

    • @CodyYankey
      @CodyYankey 7 лет назад +5

      +Jackman Works I thought you would have just cut them (threaded rod) to a few inches and just epoxy them in. Risky drilling so far without a drill press. Even with a drill press the job would be kinda scary. lol
      Nice score on the threaded rod as well. That stuff is expensive!

    • @keitho3133
      @keitho3133 7 лет назад

      Threaded rod is actually pretty cheap for 3/8"... www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/national-hardware-4000bc-3-8-in-x-16-x-36-in-threaded-rod-zinc?cm_vc=-10005 . It's more at the home centers but probably still not that bad (a lot cheaper than bolts, which tractor supply is also good for if you have one near).

    Watching this in the UK. Fantastic. Looks smaller at the end of the video than i imagined. I think this is one of your best.

    I enjoyed watching this project ... along with a great music choice. I thought it was Michael Hedges at first but was surprised to find that it wasn't. Continue with the great videos (w/great music choices)

    Better than a movie, wow, what work. Fascinating. I found a pile of pallets tonight and came on to see if I could get directions to make an easy desk as I need one. I feel humbled, who knew? LOL. You do amazing work. I am sure you will get lots of attention.

    I love this channel. Jackman Works, keep up the terrific work. I love the projects, the attention to detail as to how you are making them, the unobtrusive bits of humor, and the unique music. You're always motivating me to get in the garage and make something.
