As a Trekkie, I'm well aware of the dangers of unregulated matter/antimatter interactions, so that part made perfect sense to me (it ... also gave unintentional fuel to a Ghostbusters/Star Trek story idea that's been kicking around in the back of my mind for a while but that's a whole other comment) and I'd say the reason the explosion atop Spook Central wasn't nearly as devastating - or even as radioactive - as a full M/AM detonation should have been was because the bulk of the destruction occurred in Gozer's home dimension. The explosion in our dimension was simply the blow back or the "muzzle flash" that managed to escape from Gozer's dimension right before the portal collapsed.
Which would explain why Gozer had to crawl its ass from the underworld instead of descending from a celestial plane. And I think the ghostbusters unintentionally released the essence Gozer kept from the realities he destroyed prior to the events of the movies.
@@symonsan I always tried to imagine what those worlds were like before Gozer destroyed them. What would they look like? What was their world like? I also remember in the IDW comics one of the Ghostbusters asking Egon why they shouldn't try it again, but he said that there's no dimensional gateway to swing the odds in their favor, which also supports this theory.
After the Ghostbusters cross the streams at the end of the 1st movie, the Ghostbusters were connected to the multi-verse. It spread the idea of the firehouse, proton packs, traps, the jump suits, no ghost logo, and the term Ghostbusters. That is when the creation of the Real, Extreme, Answer the Call (2016), and other ghostbusters teams
I would like to point out that the Crossed-Streams explosion at the end of the first movie may have been a LOT bigger than we realized. Remember that "Spook Central" was the focal point of a cross-dimensional rift, a lot of the explosion may have been channeled into whatever hell-dimension Gozer the Gozarian was in at the time and what little that affected New York was just the outer edges.
That was the only thing I was going to say too!!! However other than that I thoroughly enjoyed the explanation. Remember in the game the Gozerian Configuration was basically in shambles thanks to the damage caused by crossing the streams
I always assumed that's why the guys survived. They crossed the streams into Gozers dimension. So whenever the explosion was set off it went off over there much bigger than what we saw. A large enough blast to destroy the portal and pull the spooks back through.
That's a great explanation of the cross-stream governor. Pretty-much how I figured it worked, broadly, but as usual with more technical detail and backing info than my layman's brain would think of. best of luck in Chi City. Hit up the Windy City Ghostbusters while you're in town. They're friendly folks!
I concur! It's something that's briefly crossed my mind while watching the cartoon but not something I've ever given serious thought about, but now that you've spelled it out, I'm also very curious.
I always thought the majority of the explosion in the original movie happened inside Gozer's dimensional space, whatever it was. The blast we saw on the top of the tower was just a tiny bit of that energy that leaked through.
I agree that the crossed streams didn’t have the desired effect on Gozer the second time around due to insufficient time, but also because they were firing at him this time, instead of at his gateway to slam it shut. Gozer (as Stay-Puft) detonated due to being instantly violently severed from his power source the first time around.
I wouldn’t say the explosion that blew the top off of “Spook Central” was any less than 2 atomic bombs. Keep in mind, they were standing in the door way to another dimension. So most likely, the explosion was contained to the parallel dimension and the explosion we saw, was the tip of the ice berg.
When you explain it the scientific idea makes logical sense. Are you going to make a video on the Afterlife Proton Pack? The internal mechanism in the one Phoebe fixes looks interesting.
We might, the device Phoebe repairs is the cyclotron which we talk about in our original proton pack video. But they do expand on some concepts which we'd like to go over.
@@ChannelingSpirits I imagine you would have noticed it but did you hear Ray Stantz mention the 16 ounces of "Fuel Isotope" to Phoebe that Egon stole and what he used to make the power cells of the four Proton Cannons in Shandors Mine? It really backs up what you said about the nuclear fuel in the Proton Packs. There appeared to be some Solenoid-like devices next to the Cyclotron Vacuum Chamber (I think that's what the brass structure was?) and the Lights on the Cyclotron Lid appeared to be some sort of monitors with Cathode Ray Tubes which was interesting. I want to say that I enjoy your content and keep up the great work :)
Why have I not found this channel sooner. You provide all the fun info that a Ghostbuster could want. Keep up the good work and good luck with the move.
So…Spengler and Stantz invented the technology that would later allow Zephram Cochrane to develop warp bubble technology? 🖖👻 “Crossing the streams” in more ways than one!
Back when I still played on my xbox360, I got a copy of the Ghostbusters game around 2012-ish. In the tutorial with Ray and the rookie in the firehouses basement, Rey quoted Not to cross the streams. Throughout the entire game I did not cross the streams once, despite the fact that most wrangling fights had me merging streams with the other busters. I was disappointed and thought to assume the games mechanics or engine couldn't accommodate for such a feature, or to avoid the AIs aim getting players killed to often. However, most recently, on my playthrough with the remastered edition on steam, I was back at the hotel in Mission1, going after Slimer. I was in the ball room wrecking shit, flipping tables as per usual with Venkmen, all aloof like. Then as we were blasting at Slimer, our streams got extremely close together and merged. It was something that caught me of guard, the tips of the streams blazed, the audio ques and the voice line from Venkman was new to me. My conglomerate thoughts at that moment were "WOAHLY SHIT!!" and I watched with awe, purposefully holding down the fire button so as for the ions to reverse down the stream and exploding at the tips of the wands, knocking both Me and Venkman to the ground. I was grinning from ear to ear, All along the game did have the feature, safe to say it was a pleasant surprise. Guess I took Rays advice to heart. That, or I was a crack shot back then. Excellent video on the breakdown, been bingeing ghostbuster stuff lately, glad to have come across this channel.
4:43 While the orange-red beam is definitely composed of protons, it is possible that the blue return stream is composed of positrons from the orange proton stream interacting with the ghost’s electrons and decaying into neutrons, through a process called positron emission. So Venkman may not be totally incorrect.
I think if the OG Ghostbuster were younger they can hold Gozer, they're just too old for this, but yeah it's still awesome to see them blasting the proton packs.
Their was one Spongebob Square Pants episode where he had to clean the dishes at Mr. Krab's restaurant where 1 plate refused to be cleaned the only way he could clean that 1 plate was to take like a Microscope turn it INTO a Proton Pack and when he crossed the streams in that episode it has the same result as the end of the 1985 Ghostbusters movie in that the restaurant looked like a Nuclear Bomb was dropped on it as soon as Mr. Krabs opened the front door.
This video was great! I thoroughly enjoyed it. Keep up the great stuff! The visuals were a great way to demonstrate what you were saying. Additionally, the Ectomobile owner's workshop manual also states that crossing the streams could potentially invert the proton stream BACK into the Proton Pack, causing it to overload and achieve the same effect of total protonic reversal.
Great video as always Channeling Spirits! Always love your deep dives on the GB universe equipment. Keep up the great work and good luck finishing up the move
one thing that doesn't make sense since I did not expect for the proton packs to have a similarity to capn crunch why do we get the iconic sound of the packs instead of a sine sound produced by the streams since that's how sound works and why do they oscillate in a sine pattern that doesn't make sense and now it's starting to get similar to buckaroo banzai cause oscillation overthruster now I'm getting ideas
The boys had already destroyed the traveller's first form (the Serbian model with the bloodshot eyes) via a particle reaction, but it hadn't really helped matters. The link between Gozer's realm and Manhattan was a door, very much like Dana's refrigerator. In the film, Spengler says his plan is very much about generating enough force to push that door closed again. Presumably, most of what gives Gozer its power is still on the other side. Slamming the door blocks the life force from Stay Puft and turns him into just a heap of superheated marshmallow.
Interesting explanation. So in "Afterlife" it appears that the Dirt Farm was a backup plan to capture Vince and Zuul, and not intended at first glance to capture Gozer. The crossing of the streams we saw in '84 and again in Afterlife was directed at the portal. Further, the Afterlife packs that were on "Auto" for lack of a better term in the Shandor mine seemed to be active multiple times causing the earthquakes in town. So this begs another question. If Gozer cannot show up in our dimension without the Keymaster and Gatekeeper joining, and the Auto firing packs were disabled by a Vince possessed Rudd, what was it crossing the streams preventing in the first place? Had others in, or around town, been previously possessed in the same immediate time frame? Was it actually Zuul the stream crossing in the mine was repelling? The more I think about it the more confused I get.
My thought is yes, the Dirt Farm's "Trap Field" was an experiment to capture one or both of the Terror Dogs. Nothing in the first two films show them using a standard trap to capture a Class VI so Egon may not have known if they could be contained in one. Once he had Vinz Clortho, he could lure Zuul and capture her in the Trap Field, preventing Gozer from being summoned.
Another incredible video! Thanks so much for your hard work! This series is just the best. Congratulations on your move! I'm moving back to sweet home Chicago myself next month. I love your work, and thanks again for putting it out!
from my "non-physicist but still pretty smart" viewpoint the only real challenge that i see is a sufficient power source for the cyclotron and ionizer otherwise it pretty much works
Dig these breakdowns greatly. They really ahould higher you as lore consultants goong forward. I think they kinda mixed up crossing the streams in the new film as, in previous explanations, it only worked because of the presence other dimensional energies.
I love science, I love Ghostbusters...this channel is beyond awesome. Great explanation, sound science (I think lol) and overall an amazing video. Now let's eat some gods for breakfast...I hear they're high in fiber lol.
I thought in Afterlife the reason Gozer was able to uncross the streams was due to there being only three, not four and as such was weaker than the event in 1984.
You're in Chi-town now? Well, as the world is starting to open up and people are starting to do live conventions again, maybe one day soon you could do a collab with the Chicago Ghostbusters!
Explaining the crossing of the streams has always been a challenge; but I'm not entirely convinced that it's an antimatter explosion. There's just a little too much wrong with that theory. I mean the gamma rays produced would irradiate the guys for one- but more to the point, protons repel each other. 90% of the universe is made of protons, they bounce off each other just fine. I doubt the undulations of the stream is a perfect sine wave, but even if so, that doesn't seem plausible enough to overcome the energy needed to collide protons within the stream to generate antimatter. My guess is it's a hydrogen explosion
I still think all four of them would need to get regular cancer screenings, having been that close to nuclear fallout and three of them covered in irradiated marshmallow goo.
That's not what deus ex machina means. It's not machine against a God. It's literally God fom the machine. Divine machinery. Or divine intervention. A near-miraculous highly improbable intervention materializes at the last minute to save the heroes at the very end.
