Finally, you Show your face. I thank you for your time and Sharing your knowledge. By watching your videos and some others. I was able to install A/C 1.5 ton condsensor unit and evaporator coil pair with the previous installed gas furnace and Everything is working great. Now the furnace is down and I think is inducer motor going bad after 6-7 years of flawless running. The brand is Goodman. I am just a handyman but not technician or maintenance.
Thank you so much. Two repair men wanted to charge me $1000 to replace the control board on my old furnace. After 15 minutes of trouble shooting I fixed the system without changing anything. Those blood suckers are really something.

I'm a commercial gas tech. Flame rods do go bad . But takes time. I've seen one's you could clean up but won't conduct due to heat treated and metal losses it conductivity. The porcelain bleeds to ground. You can test this with a Megger.

Good Channel! Been watching a few years now and really enjoy what you’re doing here. I’m a state licensed HVACR tech with over 20 years and you never know everything, I just assume I don’t and from there I have a foundation for actually learning new gear, how it works and when it doesn’t why. I learned that from someone older and more experienced and it works.

Hey Tom, thanks! Those carrier/bryant/payne inducers are all like that. It isn't the bearings but is due to the heavy weight of the inducer wheel inside the inducer housing, thanks!
You missed a few steps in what the board does. You most likely left them out for time. When I start hiring people I will ask them to bore me with details on what happens on a 80% furnace. From call for heat through furnace shutting off. If they take 3 minutes to answer if they are a great tech. Troubling shooting a pressure switch or flame sensor or limit switch the board does two thing it sends out a voltage and then must receive the voltage back. If the board don't send it to the component or read it when it returns it bad. watching the burners when the the blower kick on is a great crack indicator. But what I have seen here today you are a great tech and teacher.

I am not a Tech but a Handyman and I Understanded it very well. From most of his Videos and some other people Video clips, I installed the gas furnace and AC unit all by myself. Oh yes, Everything in Life no One tell us Everything in details. Not even between a husband and a wife and that is the Reality of Life.....
Maybe a video on the most overlooked issues too. Especially plugged drains on 90% condensing furnaces. I go behind lots of techs for that problem as second opinion to solve recurring/unsolved issues.
With regard to plugged drains you get all the symptoms of other problems. Flame roll outs, open pressure switches, high and or rising flue c.o. on combustion testing, limit safeties tripping, inducer fan problems etc
As for bad h.e. scams i see people doing that around here in Michigan too. I Personally change a lot of commercial heat exchangers but those are really easy to find since packaged units you can just pull the door and take a picture for the customer. Residential you need a scope or another more tedious way to prove it to them. I never sell a furnace to anyone unless its a clear breach that warrants disabling the system for safety/health concerns.
Check for possible dangers by doing a combustion analysis and measure for carbon monoxide. There may be something else that smells along with possible CO. It could just be something in those two vents though reacting with the heat but better check to be sure, thanks!
Hello you have one of the best HVAC channels on RUclips! I have individual circuit amp draw app from emporia energy, so I monitor various breakers wattage. I have a 20 year old heil 3 ton heat pump that I installed myself and pride myself in the performance like SP of .3" WC on low tap vs .5 spec and very good power bills. Anyway, I noticed with cooling I get between cold day 2500 watts compressor vs 3000 hot day but heat pump mode is higher at 3200 watts, I believe it normal also heat pump mode watts move sinusoidally up and down by about 150 watts/ per minute almost like the outside TXV is modulating. Does this sound normal? Thank you for great channel.
AD, I wouldn't say that it sounds abnormal. There can be some fluctuation due to a few psi moving up and down from metering device modulation like you were saying and during heat pump mode, it may be running with a slightly higher compression ratio! That is awesome how you are monitoring all of it! Great job!
Is it normal that when the gas valve is connected, the voltage is not kept constant at 24 volts, just spikes and goes back to 0. When I disconnect it, the current is kept for a good 5 seconds (test mode). I'm thinking that the valve is causing the voltage to drop because it is bad but just wanted to know if this is a normal behavior, I would expect voltage, just no actuation but in this case, the voltage is dropped to 0.
That is certainly another way to check. Sometimes the problem is the primary heat exchanger has pulled off a bit and is no longer sealing and it is not a crack in the exchanger, thanks!

If it is a 90 percent efficient or higher unit, has the condensate drains and tubes been cleaned yet? I did a video on that as well as top 10 pressure switch error problems. Make sure to not put pressure on that pressure switch, only with a testing tool for that purpose such as the sdmn6 but it may just be the drain lines, thanks!

I have a question...my gas furnance runs good but every now and then when it is very cold outside my furnance pilot will go out and not reignite..as soon as we lit the pilot it will turn on and stay on...I also noticed that there is black smog lines in the furnance..any ideas? I was tild that i need a new furnace
Cold air drops and you may be back drafting and blowing out the pilot, also the flame sensor may be fouled, pilot could be blowing weak. A number of things could be going on. Really you should be calling a service company to come look and see if there is a reason for the failure
Working with refrigerants, preparing systems for refrigerant, checking the charge, troubleshooting by reading the charge, airflow troubleshooting reading static pressures, temp rise formula , etc thanks
at seven minutes what me and most persons call _ground_ is actually *return* There is "neutral" which is center tap on 3-phase ~ not seen here; And there is the return path of power which is very commonly tied to an actual "ground" which is somewhere tied by conductor to actual earthen ground; Often the return is tied to ground in the panel - if not neutral will float compared to ground then you have voltage across chassis or cabinet to earthen ground The driven rod becomes corroded due to earthen currents and for some reason practice - code actually - has return path to the drop "bonded" to earthen ground which is driven copper rod - in most cases - or a flat metal conductor under bottom or power pole - this is run with #6 AWG and you can see it on many power poles; Seems the concern is if return is not bonded to ground charges can build inside the cabinet which renders the cabinet dangerous so they just tie everything to common ground;

Would a Carbon Monoxide detector with a positive reading at a heat vent be proof enough for proving a cracked heat exchanger without actually locating the crack?
It certainly is something but for the customer's sake, whenever possible, try to go further so they know there is no question or second guessing, thanks!
my fan is runing all the time under any setting after i changed the thermostat ... i put the old one back and still same problem, The error code green light flashes 4 times which means - LIMIT CIRCUIT FAULT − Indicates the limit or flame rollout switch is open." i took out the G and R thermostat wires from the control board completely off the screws but the fan kept blowing ..now im getting stumped
In its flash codes..check over each section of that code. Have well trained techs sent to repair issues..not just cheap labor with no experience! Problem solved
If you have a service tech out there troubleshooting furnaces and he doesn't understand the basic stuff you're saying in this video, he needs to go back to being a helper. This is basic stuff.

Been watching a few years now and really enjoy what you’re doing here. I’m a state licensed HVACR tech with over 20 years and you never know everything, I just assume I don’t and from there I have a foundation for actually learning new gear, how it works and when it doesn’t why.

Hey Tom, thanks! Those carrier/bryant/payne inducers are all like that. It isn't the bearings but is due to the heavy weight of the inducer wheel inside the inducer housing, thanks!

You missed a few steps in what the board does. You most likely left them out for time. When I start hiring people I will ask them to bore me with details on what happens on a 80% furnace. From call for heat through furnace shutting off. If they take 3 minutes to answer if they are a great tech. Troubling shooting a pressure switch or flame sensor or limit switch the board does two thing it sends out a voltage and then must receive the voltage back. If the board don't send it to the component or read it when it returns it bad. watching the burners when the the blower kick on is a great crack indicator. But what I have seen here today you are a great tech and teacher.

How about testing pressure switch with mity-vac
Maybe a video on the most overlooked issues too. Especially plugged drains on 90% condensing furnaces. I go behind lots of techs for that problem as second opinion to solve recurring/unsolved issues.

With regard to plugged drains you get all the symptoms of other problems. Flame roll outs, open pressure switches, high and or rising flue c.o. on combustion testing, limit safeties tripping, inducer fan problems etc
As for bad h.e. scams i see people doing that around here in Michigan too. I Personally change a lot of commercial heat exchangers but those are really easy to find since packaged units you can just pull the door and take a picture for the customer. Residential you need a scope or another more tedious way to prove it to them. I never sell a furnace to anyone unless its a clear breach that warrants disabling the system for safety/health concerns.
what would make one section of the house vents smell like something is burning bu not other area vents?
Maybe something in the vent is causing the smell.
Check for possible dangers by doing a combustion analysis and measure for carbon monoxide. There may be something else that smells along with possible CO. It could just be something in those two vents though reacting with the heat but better check to be sure, thanks!
On a Bryant furnace can the wiring harness between the control board and the inducer control board go bad?
It could have a loose connection and it could also have a loose solder connection at the board. Anything is possible, thanks
Hello you have one of the best HVAC channels on RUclips! I have individual circuit amp draw app from emporia energy, so I monitor various breakers wattage. I have a 20 year old heil 3 ton heat pump that I installed myself and pride myself in the performance like SP of .3" WC on low tap vs .5 spec and very good power bills. Anyway, I noticed with cooling I get between cold day 2500 watts compressor vs 3000 hot day but heat pump mode is higher at 3200 watts, I believe it normal also heat pump mode watts move sinusoidally up and down by about 150 watts/ per minute almost like the outside TXV is modulating. Does this sound normal? Thank you for great channel.
AD, I wouldn't say that it sounds abnormal. There can be some fluctuation due to a few psi moving up and down from metering device modulation like you were saying and during heat pump mode, it may be running with a slightly higher compression ratio! That is awesome how you are monitoring all of it! Great job!
Is it normal that when the gas valve is connected, the voltage is not kept constant at 24 volts, just spikes and goes back to 0. When I disconnect it, the current is kept for a good 5 seconds (test mode). I'm thinking that the valve is causing the voltage to drop because it is bad but just wanted to know if this is a normal behavior, I would expect voltage, just no actuation but in this case, the voltage is dropped to 0.
Have you ever done a smoke pencil test while the blower fan is running and the inducer fan is not?
That is certainly another way to check. Sometimes the problem is the primary heat exchanger has pulled off a bit and is no longer sealing and it is not a crack in the exchanger, thanks!

My furnace will run two or three times then stop for about five days or so. Says pressure switch an lock out on code. Any suggestions?
If it is a 90 percent efficient or higher unit, has the condensate drains and tubes been cleaned yet? I did a video on that as well as top 10 pressure switch error problems. Make sure to not put pressure on that pressure switch, only with a testing tool for that purpose such as the sdmn6 but it may just be the drain lines, thanks!

I have a question...my gas furnance runs good but every now and then when it is very cold outside my furnance pilot will go out and not reignite..as soon as we lit the pilot it will turn on and stay on...I also noticed that there is black smog lines in the furnance..any ideas? I was tild that i need a new furnace
Cold air drops and you may be back drafting and blowing out the pilot, also the flame sensor may be fouled, pilot could be blowing weak. A number of things could be going on. Really you should be calling a service company to come look and see if there is a reason for the failure

Working with refrigerants, preparing systems for refrigerant, checking the charge, troubleshooting by reading the charge, airflow troubleshooting reading static pressures, temp rise formula , etc thanks
at seven minutes what me and most persons call _ground_ is actually *return*
There is "neutral" which is center tap on 3-phase ~ not seen here;
And there is the return path of power which is very commonly tied to an actual "ground" which is somewhere tied by conductor to actual earthen ground; Often the return is tied to ground in the panel - if not neutral will float compared to ground then you have voltage across chassis or cabinet to earthen ground
The driven rod becomes corroded due to earthen currents and for some reason practice - code actually - has return path to the drop "bonded" to earthen ground which is driven copper rod - in most cases - or a flat metal conductor under bottom or power pole - this is run with #6 AWG and you can see it on many power poles;
Seems the concern is if return is not bonded to ground charges can build inside the cabinet which renders the cabinet dangerous so they just tie everything to common ground;

Would a Carbon Monoxide detector with a positive reading at a heat vent be proof enough for proving a cracked heat exchanger without actually locating the crack?
It certainly is something but for the customer's sake, whenever possible, try to go further so they know there is no question or second guessing, thanks!

Chances are the secondaries are failed on that Carrier.
That's a shame that heat exchanger material was used in the secondaries of the older furnaces
Some of the older Trane 90% units have issues with the cold header cracking. They still run but they leak water all over the place.
Ceramic flame sensors go bad alot more. They can even be cracked right out of the box
The silicon carbide hsi's do break quite often!
my fan is runing all the time under any setting after i changed the thermostat ... i put the old one back and still same problem,
The error code green light flashes 4 times which means - LIMIT CIRCUIT FAULT − Indicates the limit or flame rollout switch is open." i took out the G and R thermostat wires from the control board completely off the screws but the fan kept blowing ..now im getting stumped

In its flash codes..check over each section of that code. Have well trained techs sent to repair issues..not just cheap labor with no experience! Problem solved
If you have a service tech out there troubleshooting furnaces and he doesn't understand the basic stuff you're saying in this video, he needs to go back to being a helper. This is basic stuff.
