- I didn’t know whether to upload this one because of the quality of the video, but the sounds just made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, 37420 The Scottish Hosteller in mainline livery with an oil train from Grangemouth to Carlisle & return, an incredible insight into a nightshift on board an English Electric Class 37, I hope you enjoy it
6th June 1992
Amazing Thanks!!
Night turns on BR pulling freight in the pitch dark following the lights , hoping the main generator wasn't going to flashover if you were near your weight limit. Happy days.
22-45 s in " I'm here Mr. Signalman." 😅 Driver informing signalman of identity of train through the one way signal telephone . No two way coms. in those days.
Thanks for uploading , Temple Mills and Whitemoor is where I mostly went on my turns.I used to pick up the same style of oil tanks in the video from Bow but that was on a day turn and they were empty but had contained petroleum so they were still classed as dangerous goods anyway as the vapours were still inside .We had lots of work back in the late 70s and BR couldn't get enough staff even then because of the unsocial hours required expecially working freight traffic .
Willie Fowler only knew two throttle positions open or shut.
The sounds paint a perfect image.
They do indeed!!, lovely memories
Yes this is exactly what it was like pulling freight in the dark on a 37 . Sometimes you couldn't get over 40 mph because of the weight .
Terrific video , one of my train favourites.
Thanks for a great video ! It reminds me of a footplate trip I made in the late 70-ies, taking a train loaded with Dutch APC's from the German Paderborn training area back to The Netherlands. Right through the Ruhr industrial area, the steelworks there were still going strong back then, making a wonderful night scenery. Motive power: a V100 on the Bundesbahn and a very wobbly electric NS1100 in Holland.
Wow mate, that sounds incredible !!, train drivers have the best job in the world
Love it thanks for sharing 👌
Good stuff 👍👍👍 The sound from the 1750 English electric horses helped take the edge off the picture quality....
Apologies , night vision wasn’t great in the 80’s 🤦🏻♂️
I love this, my grandfather was a Millerhill top link driver at the same time, he would of worked that same route many times, he probably knew the driver well. 👍👍
Superb!!, yeah Willie Fowler was a legend , very well known, he interested to know if he did know him
@@yesterdaystracks Robert “Bob McNeill, a St Margaret’s man Then MillerHill. Used to drive No9 Union of South Africa on the specials.
He’d know Peter Walker of Eastfield as well, he’s mainly on the Jacobite Black 5 now
I never understood why locos in the UK didn't have headlights for night running. In Ireland all diesel locos had two powerful beams that would light up the line for a mile ahead.
Just the one main halogen headlight but it never really gave off much light
I, the crew had a wee bit 'o Vulcan steel underr their botums. Aye.
Willie Fowler well known Grangemouth driver
What a guy!!, he’s on the Syphons & semaphores video as well 😃
@@yesterdaystracks I worked with him on the early 80’s
Not a great video picture wise but the engine sounds are phenomenal, conjures up an unmistakable feel to a class 37 cab.
thank you
Aye sorry about that I had it going over and over in my mind should I or shouldn’t I upload it but the sounds were amazing so take it for what it is eh, glad you enjoyed the sound 👍
Please don't remove it .
