You didn't mention the biggest thing about this album, which was that it experimented with using a crowdsource model for its A&R. All the features were selected by fans over social media. Many of the song concepts too, like Drunk Dial. The reason you didn't see the variety you wanted had more to do people just kept requesting those types of songs.
I get the message of "the format", but I'm not a huge fan of the beat. that's the only song I have a problem with. on "utari kaiju" (however it's spelled), I dislike how loud and high pitched the horn sound gets sometimes throughout the song. it takes me back to my most desired song for Cunninlynguists to rewrite, and that is SouthernUnderground. the gospel cries in that song overpower the true lyrics far too much. that song could be a masterpiece if to just lower the volume of that "uhuhuh uouh" every second or two.
here we go.... wtf is wrong with his hair?, why is his hair blonde? why doesn't he keep it bald it looks better? WtF IS uP wiTh hIS hAIr??@? ahha you asked for it
While i kind of agree with Drunk Dial, i think this album is outstanding, and for someone been introduced to them this would be a great starting point. I think this may be their most accessible work to date, and in a genre where artists best work is usual their debut, Cunninlynguists are true artists in that they move on and change with every release. By the time i got to Deacons moving verse on "Beyond The Sun" and that gorgeous hook i literally had goosebumps. I know you mention more bangers, but there are so many groups that focus on 'bangers' CL bring something different to the table, that i dont care about bangers any more, the emotions and journeys they take you on is second to none. This is also not as deep as some of their main studio albums so its easier to digest but Deacon and Natti are constantly improving and its great to see. And Kno........ no one has touched him in the 2000's and he keeps improving, how these guys arent more known is a travesty. 9/10 imo
That song....goddamn that song goes ape shit lol Hell of a way to finish the album. I also really like Guide You Through Shadows even though that is off topic of hard hitting songs.
Usually agree with you opinions, but Drunk Dial is hilarious a some of the songs on this album are masterpieces, like Beyond the Sun and Innerspace...The Format also gets an honorable mention. This deserves at least a score of 8...
Tonedeff on any Cunninlynguists track is an auto W. The concept of Urutora Kaiju is really cool. A decent 7 may be slightly harsh but I do think this is possibly the weakest offering from them. I'd argue they've never missed though.
This album is by far my favorite so far this year. So many amazing tracks. I actually found Drunk Dial hilarious. I really love Castles, it's probably the most interesting and introspective track I've heard this year. Strange Universe is great too, I love the concept behind the track and Del's flow sounds so fuckin good to me.
I agree for the most part. The album isn't as great as their previous one, still a great listen though. There's not too many bangers on the album, but that's not really cunninlynguists style to begin with, they're more mellow and deep usually. But great review. Perhaps you could review A Piece of Strange or Will Rap For Food some time?
Wholy shit Anthony I never thought you actually knew the hidden underground like this.. this totally changed everything, 1,000 times more respect my man.
Favorite album this year at the time, I'd now easily put Pinata above it and now PTSD is fighting for the #2 spot as well... Probably my 4th favorite piece CL has put out to date though
This kinda out of the blue I guess, but how about a classic review of the old Interpol album "Turn on the Bright Lights" if you get the time? You just seem to mention it a little bit and I'm now curious what you think of it.
I wonder if he rushes through albums to do all these reviews.. Some albums need to marinate for weeks, even months sometimes to really get across a message.
Anthony, could you do a review of A Piece of Strange? No other video reviews, i'd like to know your thoughts as I think it's cohesively better than this mixtape
Drunk Dial for me was the best track on the album. Hands down. Lyrics and delivery made me laugh out loud and that beat reminds me so much of Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel - Mr. Soft... and that reminds me of the Trebor Softmints commercial. Which was FUCKING AWESOME.
Oh, and I 10000000% agree on the "too many tracks trying to be the most meaningful thing I've heard today". Heeeeere I'm standing naaaaked.... SKIP. Ooooh myyyy, makes me waaaanna cry.... SKIP.
Bigmikebigwhoop Castles stood out much more for me, though I'm a huge Sadistik fan so I'm definitely biased. Aesop's verse on Castles was one of the best parts of this entire tape.
You should seriously start listening to Sadistik. Don't know why you never reviewed Flowers for my Father, his album that came out last year. Get on it Tony!
You should check out this Belgian band called Dans Dans. They released their first LP about a year ago. I think they make some really great and unique music.
Needle Drop totally slept on "In the city", "innerspace" and "beyond the sun" which were the BEST TRACKS on the album. Meanwhile, "drunk dial", "castles" and "hot" were the shittiest tracks. But, Needle Drop loves Apathy so he won't say anything bad.
Vismund Floyd Listen here you shitlord, in every video, a few minutes after the release there are already a few dislikes, which happened often when you have a bunch of idiotic trolls who are just here to be assholes, with the only argument that "Fagtano is a pleb lel".
given that the fans made a major input into the features (crowdsourced album) it's not a surprise that it's not perfect, but they gave the customer what they wanted.
well, i think it's good enough to compete with pinata for rap album of the year (so far). thats how good this album is to me. with that said, i can definitely understand where you're coming from when pointing out the cons of the album. though these "flaws" are very, very minor to me. Good review nonetheless sir (like always)
Easily the beat Strange Journey mixtape - the other's contained an inexcusable amount of cheese - ironic or not. Also: Do to the Beast - The Afghan Whigs. Cheers.
Bout time!!!! i looked on my account and saw strange journey 3 i was like OHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! when he said all those guest it was over i was getting that shit.
am i the only one that thought Castles was the best track on here? i liked a lot of these tracks but Castles was the one that stuck out to me. Sadistik's verse was very good and deacon and Aesop had serviceable verses as well. I enjoyed beyond the sun and the format as well.
This! I thought Anthony would touch on this.
Some great hip hop songs on the new CunninLynguists record: CunninLynguists - Strange Journey Vol. 3 ALBUM REVIEW
castles is my favorite track on the album. 9/10 for me

How did you give this a decent 7? It's one of the best albums of the year. It's at least an 8.
Urutora Kaiju (feat. Tonedeff) >>>
That song....goddamn that song goes ape shit lol Hell of a way to finish the album. I also really like Guide You Through Shadows even though that is off topic of hard hitting songs.
Cut your eyebrows into rectangles and dye them blonde
Usually agree with you opinions, but Drunk Dial is hilarious a some of the songs on this album are masterpieces, like Beyond the Sun and Innerspace...The Format also gets an honorable mention. This deserves at least a score of 8...

I agree for the most part. The album isn't as great as their previous one, still a great listen though. There's not too many bangers on the album, but that's not really cunninlynguists style to begin with, they're more mellow and deep usually. But great review.
