  • In this video, we examine a passage often cited by proponents of dispensational salvation. Does James 2 support salvation by faith + works? I pray this video provides clarity and dispels any confusion concerning this subject. God bless! -OD

@OnoDiamante: I've been watching your videos about how to be saved and my question is, is it really that easy? What if I believe and my life hasn't changed? What if I'm still doing the same sins that I've done before or if I commit a sin repeatedly? I don't want to be wrong about this; I want to be sure---to have the assurance---that I'm saved and will make it to Heaven and see Jesus.

      EPHESIANS 2:8-10
      James 2: 14-26
Paul was explain in a house centers become saints.
James was explaining how saints become Sanctify.
Paul was explaining how you go from Earth to heaven.
James was explainin how you get heaven back down-to-earth
Paul is explaining how to determine where you gonna spend eternity
James is explaining how you can experience a turn while you are waiting on getting there.
So basically, a man is save to get to heaven on faith alone

Gene Kim teaches that faith in Christ is our way to Salvation. He teaches Once saved always saved. He isn't a heretic. He literally teaches the Gospel. Its incredible to me that we as Christians will call other Christians "lost" or "heretics" when they preach the true Gospel. He is a human being, just like you and me, just like anyone else, you know what that means? It means he isn't going to get EVERYTHING right. The best preachers and leaders in the Church are still in need of Christ and living in broken bodies with a mind given unto death.

James 2:19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.
This proves that it’s about salvation why would he say the devils also believe and tremble plus why would he say faith without works is dead no where in the Bible do you ever see this saying because we have Christ and he is not dead.
I get this guy’s interpretation of it but there is one flaw when he says the bretheren it’s referring to the Jews not us this is why you need to divide.

We don’t do works TO get saved, we do works BECAUSE we’re saved... I hope that makes sense to people. Because we are saved and have the Holy Spirit in us, our hearts will want to do good and honor God with our actions. Christians shouldn’t be scared of the word “works”, we should strive to do good works. Not in hopes that it saves us, but because we are called to do so as stated in James as disciples of Christ.

I like Gene Kim… some of his teaching is awesome. But I hear what your saying about James and that makes so much more sense. Faith alone for salvation but faith plus works to be justified before men.
I also believe repentance doesn’t save but it does lead to salvation. A change of mind … “Godly sorrow worketh repentance unto salvation, not to be repented of.”
So you have to understand, you have to be sorrowful and see the world the way God sees it… know that you are a sinner in need of a savior…. That understanding causes you to change you mind from unbelief to belief (repentance) which leads to salvation (faith in Christ alone). But faith in Christ alone saves… does anyone disagree… is so I’d love to hear other opinions.

11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

Dr Gene believes in Faith alone. We are in the church age now and since Christ came and died it is faith alone. I think you misunderstand what he teaches. He teaches, is that before Christ and in the Old Testament works we’re also required of the Jewish people to show obedience to God. This was done through sacrifices. They couldn’t just pray and ask forgiveness. In the New Testament some of the books and or verses are still referencing to the Jews and the things that are no longer required. So you need to be very careful that you are rightly dividing the word of God and understanding who is the audience. This video was a very poor argument. Otherwise I usually enjoy them.

  • @Valsi876
    @Valsi876 Год назад +2

Thank you for your explanation. I needed to look this up also, and I believe this is what you are saying: 3. James’ restatement of his point 2:17
James was not saying that a person who responds to another Christian’s need, as in James 2:15-16, shows that he has failed to exercise saving faith and is devoid of eternal life. He was saying that faith, if work (i.e., obedience to the Word of God) does not accompany it, is dead (i.e., inactive).
"We can make statements in all sincerity of mind and emotion: ’I feel sorry for the poor; I don’t condone racism.’ But James will say, ’What good is that if you aren’t doing something to help the poor or to heal the distrust and injustice between races?’ Some Christians attempt a stance of personal belief without personal action, saying, for example, ’I personally disagree with abortion, but I won’t try to change others’ minds.’ James persists in asking us: What are you doing to protect the victims-both the victimized baby and the victimized mother?" [Note: Stulac, p. 120.]
"Dead" does not mean non-existent but inactive, no longer vital, dormant, useless (cf. James 2:14). This is a very important point.
"It has not usually been considered too deeply why James chose the term ’dead’ to describe a faith that is not working. But the moment we relate this to the controlling theme of ’saving the life,’ everything becomes plain. The issue that concerns James is an issue of life or death. (He is not discussing salvation from hell!) The truth which he has in mind is that of Proverbs: ’Righteousness tendeth to life . . . he that pursueth evil pursueth it to his own death.’ [Proverbs 11:19; cf. Proverbs 10:27; Proverbs 12:28; Proverbs 13:14; Proverbs 19:16] Can a dead faith save the Christian from death? The question answers itself. The choice of the adjective ’dead’ is perfectly suited to James’ argument." [Note: Hodges, The Gospel . . ., p. 27.]

Old Testament prophets justified by faith alone in God alone Hebrews 11. They were already justified in faith before they obey God. Noah believed before he built the ark. Abraham believed before he was going to sacrifice his son Isaac. From Abel to the last OT prophet, they believed in the promised seed who is Messiah. It all points toward Christ. This was prophesied in Genesis 3:15. They knew God's plan because it was revealed to them. They were many prophesies about Jesus his birth, death, resurrection, and ascension. The bible connects not dispensationalized, which I believe is a heresy. The forefathers of dispensationalim were not who they claimed. Dispensationalism infiltrated the churches 1800s-1900s. There was a dispensationalist who claimed if you take mark of beast blank your hand off or blank your head off.

I'm going to break this down in a simple way for all. Romans and other verses are speaking about the law. You are not justified by the keeping of the old law; what you eat or drink, what day you observe, if you are circumcised, etc. James and many other verses are talking about doing good works from the heart if you are truly His disciple. You will know them by their fruits. Paul regularly tells us not to grow weary in doing good works. As James chapter 2 reads, faith without works is dead. Basically you really don't have faith in God and your heart has not changed if you are not bearing fruit. Not too many people continue reading Ephesians 2 up to verse 10, they always stop at verse 9 to prove we are saved by faith through grace and you can sit on your butt your entire Christian life and not change a thing and have no works and waltz right into heaven. Wrong. Verse 10 clearly agrees with James 2 that God has prepared many good works for those that follow Him with faith. Even John the baptist taught to bear fruits in keeping with repentance. So did Jesus, so did the apostles. We that are doing good works are not doing it to get into heaven, it's because we are on are way to heaven and love Jesus and want to be obedient to His teachings and are following what the Holy Spirit leads us to do. Yes, there are some groups out there that believe you must strive to do good works to get into heaven and have very little faith in God; Lord, Lord didn't we...... Then you have on the other side of the coin, what I think is the majority of church goers, living off God's grace and never changing and never working for God. In some instances changing of the heart but never lifting a finger by feeding the poor, or visiting the prisoners or the widows, etc. I think I made this simple that even a young child can understand. You have too many Church leaders with a degree from Seminary repeating like parrots what they have been told and never reading scripture plainly and simple as a child. And never forget, If you don't read the entire bible in context, it will never make sense and you will have division. God bless those that are truly seeking the truth and humble themselves to be taught by the Holy Spirit.

Tell me brother, how does that view work with someone who is fully paralyzed, completely bedridden with health issues, or has advanced stages of dementia to the point they can't move, speak, or barely put 2 thoughts together? Your view doesn't work, and you twist scripture. These people can't fulfill any manner whatever works you may think once should show to "prove" they are saved. You then can't turn around and say "well there are exceptions". NO, the Bible doesn't speak of that either. It says he died for all, and what you believe completely alienates a group of people from salvation. It's sickening. How do you not see this? You do realize that every living breathing person on the planet right is not able-bodied??????
James 2 is clearly taking about justifying one selves in the face of man, not God. If you are a Christian, yes you shouldn't go around acting like a condemning pharisee prick in carnality because it can push people away who may be interested in the Christian faith. That's why doing said works is profitable to man, not God.
The verse where it says "you will know them by their fruits" is speaking about the pharisees and their lack of sharing a proper gospel. We will know THEM by their fruits because THEM preach another gospel. THEM adds works. THEM says one must show to be saved. THEM says "well if you were really saved, you will show fruits. Those are the pharisees.
Yes Ephesians 2: 8-10, and I always make a point to share verse 10 because it again eradicates those of you who have this asinine point of view:
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we *SHOULD* walk in them.
Should! Not will, but should. Nor does it say anything about salvation, being saved, or losing salvation. Yes, lets continue to verse 10, then twist it to make it say something it doesn't

What you wrote reads like you are confused about the difference between grace through faith as a gift of God (salvation) vs good works AFTER you are saved and get eternal rewards. Works is not required for salvation. Otherwise, you are putting on your own righteousness and not the righteousness of God. Faith earns salvation and good works earns rewards. You can't mix both regarding salvation. You can be saved and NOT do any work and because your faith is counted for righteousness. However, God will chastise you and you will get no eternal rewards. Any wise Christian would WANT to do good works but not REQUIRED to do it for salvation. Thus, GRACE!
      1 Corinthians 3:13-15 KJV
every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is. If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.
      Romans 1

      Romans 4
5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.

2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
      Romans 10
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
      Romans 11
6 And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then it is no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.
      Ephesians 2
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
      Titus 3
      5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
      6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;
7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
      Galations 2
16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.

YES! We are saved by grace, period. THAT IS THE GIFT; GRACE. After you receive the gift of grace, you MUST REPENT. Read the bible in context. Romans is completely referring to the works of the law and not works of good deeds. Two different definitions of works. Old and New. Jesus, John the baptist, James showed us how true repentance looks like; works. If you keep the 2nd greatest commandment to love one another than you will be full of works. Some 10 fold and others 100. There will be many Christians standing before God who will be cast to Hell. Some because they lived off of grace and never lifted a finger in Jesus name Matthew 25:31-46 and other Christians because they were full of deeds but continued living in sin Matthew 7:21-23.

James 1:1 "to the twelve tribes scattered", the salvation of national Israel, which is James' concern and ministry as per Galatians 2:9, explains why works are emphasized, since the works commanded of Israel are the conditions upon which they receive the promises made to them. That is also why Peter in 1 Peter 2:12 emphasizes works before the Gentiles, as a minister of the circumcision (Galatians 2:9 again). Mixing doctrine for Israel's last days to receive their kingdom "I have not found your works perfect before God" (Revelation 3:2), with Paul's doctrine of justification by faith alone without works (Romans 3:28) is just total confusion. Today, since we are not Israel, and were not given the Law (Romans 2:14), are not burdened with the law of Israel (Acts 15:10), and thus, no works of the law are required of us to be saved as members of Christ's body. That is absolutely not the case with Israel, as they must be made to keep the law perfectly (Ezekiel 36:27, Matthew 5:48, James 2:10) in order to become the nation of priests (Exodus 19:6; 1 Peter 2:9; Revelation 1:6) foretold by the prophets (Isaiah 66:21, Zechariah 8:23). Do not confuse the Body of Christ, made of Jew and Gentile alike during Israel's fall (Romans 11:11), with future Israel who will be saved after the fullness of the Gentiles come in (Romans 11:25) when God will return to saving Israel as it is written (Romans 11:26).

The Apostle Paul received from the Lord Jesus, the gospel for the dispensation of grace and all the doctrines we need for this period of time which has interrupted the prophetic program for the past two thousand years. I pray more believers will come to know how to rightly divide.

It is important to remember that James isn't written to a specfic church but to the twelves tribes of Israel who whether saved or unsaved could be appropriately referred to as brethren (Jews in the flesh. See Romans 9:3). This is similar to why so many get confused by passage addressing "brethren" who were once correctly following the OT yet "turning from the faith" by not continuing into Chrst (Hebrew 10:26), "not holding fast the profession" (Hebrews 4:14 and 10:23) by not transitioning into Christ or trying to transition into Christ while also incorrectly dragging the law into Christ with them (aka thinking OT repetition was necessary Hebrews 6 or being judaized Galatians 3).
Overall, I 100% agree with the conclusion and differentiation of God's factual knowledge of our spiritual standing as opposed to our subjective external evaluations made by men.
I do however think it is important to note that Jewish writers using the word "brethren" is many times referencing Jewish brethren regardless of salvation status. It was hoped in many places that the gospel was clearly understood by the "brethren" (sometimes Jews and Greeks but also sometimes just Jews as in James 1:1) but Paul and the other writers were sometimes unsure of the "believer's" actual objective condition (God's knowledge of their standing) because of the judiazing (adding of the legalities) which was causing Paul (external evaluation) to question whether they actually understood what the actual gospel was.
This gave Paul great doubts as to how clearly they understood the gospel message (Galatians 4:19-20).

The comparison of Romans 4:1-5 with James 2:21-26 exposes these "wrongly dividers" as absolutely FALSE. Since both scriptures are talking about the salvation of the same man:..ABRAHAM.
They want you to pretend that Abraham was saved by TWO DIFFERENT CONFLICTING GOSPELS AT THE SAME TIME. Grace in Romans 4, and works in James 2!.....Which, to any SANE Bible believer, is IMPOSSIBLE. Their song and dance is "The schizophrenic salvation of Abraham."

The concept that Romans 4:5 and James 2:24 cannot be harmonized overlooks one interpretation. Consider Romans 4:1. What then shall we say was gained by Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh? Paul is talking about works of the flesh (according to the flesh). James is talking about works of the Spirit. Paul refers to the works of the law of sin and death (yes the Great Commandment is the law of sin and death) James refers to the law of the Spirit of life. Look at the example James used. Where in the law of Moses are you to offer your son on the altar? The law of the Spirit of life is that as the Father loved the Son, the Son loves us, and as the Son loves us, we are to love one another. Yes, God offering his Son on the altar was an act of love. Abraham, in obedience to the New Commandment, offered his son on the altar.
There is also confusion when we assume that justification is the same as salvation. You have to be justified to be saved, but you can be justified more than once. Justification is not a singular event, in spite of what the essential doctrines demand. James says Abraham was justified when he offered Isaac. Paul says Abraham was justified when he was uncircumcised. Abraham was circumcised when he offered Isaac. For them both to be right, Abraham was justified more than once. the Bible is clear that we are justified by faith. In Hebrews 11, Abraham was cited three times for faith events, and those are only the ones mentioned.
Justification is widely misunderstood, thanks to Systematic Theology doctrine. Compare the Greek words for righteousness and justify. They are almost identical.
Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Faith is comprised of two things, the substance of things hoped for, which is belief, and the evidence of things not seen, works of faith. But these works of faith are evidence of things not seen. If you are doing the works, those are works of the flesh and they are not evidence of things unseen. The work of faith is the work of the Holy Spirit using your resources.
The Great Commandment requires you to love with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. Everything but the Spirit. The law of the Spirit of life is fulfilled when the Spirit works in you. That is why it is called the law of the Spirit. The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set me free from the law of sin and death - the law of Moses.

The General Epistle Of James-Liner notes:James was a Jewish Christian writing to a Jewish Christian audience. The letter is replete with Old Testament teachings and allusions, but it is clear that James wrote from a distinctly Christian perspective and from the experience of one who had spent time with Jesus. The audience was a group of Christians who were experiencing persecution for their faith. James wrote to them to encourage them in the face of trials and to help them know how to stand firm in the faith.
Anyway, I can't say yet that I agree with you. I would like to see the whole video of this Gene Kim video you got the 4:37 minute part from so I can see the whole thing. Also, I know I have put in comments to you not agreeing with what you say about Gene Kim. Don't take that as I am hating you or judging you because I am not. I do agree the Bible (KJV) is the final authority! But we also have to go someone who can teach us the Word and truth to the best of their ability. With that being said, No one is perfect in teaching the Bible. We are humans, mistakes will be made. I'm not perfect, no pastor is perfect, and even you are not perfect (not cutting you down, just telling the honest truth). I understand we are to watch out for false teachings, and I know that there are some that truly go out of their way to think they teach the word of God, when they don't. Example Joel Osteen! But if its someone at least trying to teach the word of God, if you think it's wrong, why not reach out to Gene Kim and ask him directly, how he got his teaching out of this subject and let him know why you think or believe it's wrong. I personally think Gene is a great teacher! Do I think he's perfect? No because no one is. But rather than in your own way make it sound like Gene Kim is wrong, the best thing you could have did is reached out to him and talked about this subject. I have to say, I may not agree on everything you say, some of your stuff I do agree on. I can't say that I haven't learned a lot through my pastor at my church, Gene Kim, Peter Ruckman, Sam Gipp, and William Grady, because I have. I also have learned a few things from you too. I just think you would get better results out of something from someone who truly teaches the word and tries teaching the word if you would just reach out to them and discuss things. Anyway, if you can give me the title of that Gene Kim video so I can check the whole thing out, that would be great. P.S. I am still passing out your gospel tracts that you made-The sinner and The Savior. Thanks for your time! God Bless!

1 John 3:9 God changes us. Not us. By His wounds we are healed. If we life a lifestyle of sin it shows we don’t know God, therefore we haven’t placed our faith in Him. Faith is not thinking I believe something but is actually believing. And if we believe Jesus died on the cross everything changes in our life. It’s not our change that saves us. But this change is how we know we have a living faith. Jesus said: you would know them by their fruits. And John 15, Galatians 5:16-23 show us if we are on the flesh or in the Spirit. If we follow the Spirit we are not enslaved to sin. Romans 6, Romans 8. If we follow the flesh is shows we have no faith in God. Paul said to examine our faith (2 Corinthians 13:5)

You may “feel” that you escaped chastening because there was no immediate consequence. However, God often uses the natural repercussions of sin to correct us as well. Jeremiah 2:19 says, “Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee”. Relax and rest in God’s unchanging word, not your subjective experience.

The problem with Mid Acts Dispensationalism, or Hyper Dispensationalism, is the suggestion that one was ever saved by any other means than by faith in Christ, or shall be.
Jesus is the DOOR to the Father, and NO MAN comes to the Father but THROUGH Him.
In the Old Testament, they looked FORWARD IN FAITH for the coming Redeemer, and the Church looks back, and those in the Tribulation period after the Church is gone; will also look back to Jesus as well. It has ALWAYS been about faith.

      @@BettahThanIDeserve
      Dear Bettah,
Thanks for your concern for me and your comments...I am attaching a study of James the word SAVED is NOT ALWAYS USED in regard to Salvation.
      Study on James:
WHY DOES JAMES SAY, “FAITH WITHOUT WORKS IS
      DEAD?”
The epistle of James was written to a group of people who were already children of God. James addressed them as brethren. In James 1:22,25, he went on to say to them, “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves … But whoso looks into the perfect law of liberty, and continues therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed” (not saved) “in his deed.” Good works don’t have any part in making you a child of God, but they certainly determine whether you are an obedient child of God or not. Obedience results in God’s blessings in a person’s life, whereas, disobedience results in God’s chastening. It is not the person who knows God’s will that God is going to bless, but rather the one who does His will. The believers whom James was addressing were
guilty of showing favoritism to the rich people who came to their assembly.
They claimed to be loving their neighbors as themselves, but in actuality they
were hypocrites. They were treating people differently because they didn’t have
money or dress well (James 2:1-11). So James admonishes them, “So speak, and so
do, as they that shall be judged” (literally, `as they who are about to be
judged’) “by the law of liberty … What does it profit, my brethren, though a man
says he has faith, and has not works? Can faith save him?” (James 2:12,14).
The Greek construction of the question, “can faith save Him?” requires a negative answer; therefore, the reply is, “no, faith alone cannot save him.”
now according to Ephesians 2:8,9, in order to be saved, a person must have faith and no works; yet according to James 2:14, a person can’t be saved without works. Some people have tried to explain this away by saying that the faith that saves produces works; however, James didn’t say faith produces works; he said faith alone can’t save.
JAMES WAS WARNING OF IMPENDING DISCIPLINE
The problem is quickly solved when you realize that the word “saved” isn’t always used in reference to salvation from hell. In James 5:15 he uses it in reference to being saved from physical death, and in James 2:14 he uses it in reference to being saved from God’s discipline. James was warning of impending discipline the
Lord was going to bring into these Christians’ lives. It is not the believer
who talks the good talk who avoids God’s discipline; it is the believer who
lives the good life. These believers talked about love but were not
practicing it. James 2:15-17 explain, “If a brother or sister be naked, and
destitute of daily food, and one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be
warmed and filled; notwithstanding you give them not those things which are
needful to the body; what does it profit? Even so faith, it if has not works,
is dead, being alone.” Words alone could not supply the needy
believers with food and clothing. Telling someone who is cold and hungry to be
warmed and filled is to do absolutely nothing for that person. To be of profit,
those words must be accompanied by works. They were to supply food and clothing
for those in need, not just talk, because, “faith, if it has not works, is
dead, being alone.” These believers apparently claimed to have
faith, but without works, that sort of faith could not save them from God’s
judgment in their lives. That’s why James said, “So speak, and so DO, as they
that shall be judged” (literally, `are about to be judged’) “by the law of
liberty” (James 2:12). Now since James was addressing believers, he
was not talking about their receiving judgment in hell. For the believer there
is no such thing as coming into judgment as far as one’s eternal destiny is
concerned. Christ said, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, he who hears My word,
and believes on Him who sent Me, has everlasting life, and shall not come into
condemnation;” (literally, `judgment’) “but is passed from death unto life”
(John 5:24). James makes it abundantly clear that he is speaking of faith in the Christian life, and faith in the Christian life will always manifest itself in works. A parallel passage can be found in First John 3:17,18, “But whoso has this world’s goods, and sees his brother have need, and shuts up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwells the love of God in him? My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.” If I say I love fellow believers, yet when they are in need I don’t help them out, then in truth, I don’t love them.
BUT EVEN THE DEMONS BELIEVE AND THEY TREMBLE
Many times those who think that one must submit to the Lordship of Christ in order to be saved will support their view by the passage in James which says the demons believe and tremble. James wrote, “You believe that there is one
God; you do well: the demons also believe, and tremble. But will you know, O
vain man, that faith without works is dead?” (James 2:19,20).
People who use these verses to teach that it is not enough just to believe in Christ for salvation don’t realize what they are saying. First of all, there is a big difference
between believing in Christ and believing that there is one God. Believing that
there is one God is not going to save anyone - even the Jews who rejected
Christ believed that. Second, why would James use demons as an
example of saving faith when there is no hope of demons being saved anyway. The
Scriptures teach that since Christ didn’t die for angels (Hebrews 2:16).
So James is not using the demons to prove that you have to do more than just believe in Christ to save you from hell. James was using satire to reprimand these disobedient believers. To paraphrase, he is saying, “Big deal if you believe in God, so do the demons. You can talk all you want about faith, but without works all your so-called faith is dead.” James continues by using Abraham as an
example. Verse 21 states, “Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when
he had offered Isaac, his son, upon the altar?” Now in Romans 4:3-5, Paul uses Abraham as an example of a man who was justified by faith alone, apart from any works. “For what does the Scripture say? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. Now to him that works is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. But to him who does not work, but believes on Him Who justifies
the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.” It sounds like a contradiction between Paul and James, but in reality, they are speaking of two different events in Abraham’s life. Paul, in the book of Romans, deals with the faith Abraham had which resulted in his salvation and James deals with the faith Abraham had which resulted in his friendship with the Lord. It was by faith alone that Abraham became a child of God, but it was by his faith and works that he became a friend of God. It is important to realize that there are more than thirty years between the two occurrences referred to by Paul and James.Notice at what time in Abraham’s life he was justified by works. James 2:21 says, “when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar.” God had already promised Abraham that the Messiah was going to come through the line of his son Isaac. Isaac was unmarried at the time, and Abraham knew he would yet have to marry and have a child in order for God’s promise to be fulfilled. When Abraham was commanded by the Lord to offer Isaac as a burnt offering, he knew God wouldn’t break His promise and he trusted God to raise Isaac from the dead. And where did I get that? Hebrews 11:17-19 explain, “By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac and he who had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall your seed be called: accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead, from whence also he received him in a figure.” When God told Abraham to go and offer his son as a burnt offering, Abraham could have replied, “Now Lord, I know You’ve already promised to have the Messiah come through Isaac and I know You can raise him up from the dead, but there is no way I’m going to take his life.” Abraham could talk all he wanted about faith but the proof that he really did have faith was his works. Without the works, there is no faith. However, Abraham truly did have faith that the Lord would do what He promised as was proven by his obedience and Abraham “was called the friend of God” (James 2:23). Once a person is a child of God, he is always God’s child regardless of what he does (John 6:37). However, a person is not God’s friend unless he is doing the things God commands. Jesus Christ said, “You are My friends, if you do whatever I command you” (John 15:14). Being God’s friend is synonymous with what the Bible terms “fellowship.” The word “fellowship” means “partnership” and conveys the idea of having things in common with another individual. Thus, a believer who claims to be having fellowship with the Lord and is living a life of sin obviously is not having fellowship. He will come under the chastening hand of God, but nonetheless, he is still on his way to heaven.
