I love how this series initially framed Sohla as an unwitting participant but quickly unveiled itself as Sohla flexing being the culinary mad scientist that she is.
The “stump” part is less “Sohla suffers for our entertainment” and more “Sohla puts on the culinary equivalent of DBZ’s weighted clothing because everything else would be too easy”

I really wanted her to make a caramel onion.
I brought candied apples to a Halloween party years ago, and included a single Spanish onion in the batch.

How was the onion received?
You're a monster and a genius.
When I was in elementary school, we had a exhibition of some kind, they blindfolded and plugged the nose of a kid, had them bite into an onion and he thought it was an apple.
The little “heh heh” in Andrew’s voice over at 23:48 destroyed me
Perfect voiceover.

Between the "it's september" comment and the pizza delivery from Andrew I think it's fun figuring out the BCU's chronological timeline

Something Sohla’s current show reminds me of is the episode of Bon Appetit where she was tasked with making a modern version of spaghetti. She had such a knowledge of food chemistry and creativity that I wondered why they didn’t give her her own show. I’m so happy she has one now that lets her showcase her full range of abilities.
Ah, the carbonara episode. Total brilliance.
@@darcyjorgensen5808 still crazy how she managed to turn it into a dessert. she's like a really good and talented mad food scientist.
YES - that was such a great episode of hers - I remember that was the first time I was really able to see and appreciate her knowledge of food science.
The carbonara episode is one of my faves specifically bc of Sohla!!
they didn't give her a show cuz she isn't white, same reason they didn't pay her for all her youtube camera time
"How did you get the little feathers on top?" "Luck, it was just luck." In the distance Claire Saffitz sheds a tear and does not know why.

She made her own youtube channel.
The editing on this episode, I really wasn't anticipating jump scare music for normal things so you really got me a few time, but the friendship was truly the best bit of this one, the way Babish loved the pumpkin with their faces was so wholesome
The fact that Babish did Sohla's little giggle too in his voice-over fills me with joy
The little "heh heh" was the greatest part of this episode. And there was a lot of good parts

This episode genuinely infuriated me. I’ve never paid a ton of attention to Sohla during her previous employment and I’ve been watching what she does when the attention is fully on her and it makes me so mad that she was never appreciated like I feel she should’ve been. She is so incredibly creative, she’s charismatic, she’s sweet and so insanely talented. I cannot see how you could let someone as immensely incredible like Sohla go by. Thank you Babish for getting her, she’s incredible and I’m so happy
Not gonna lie, was ready to thumbs-down this comment at first because I thought it was yet another edgelord "sohla sucks" comment, but good on you for your Sohla-appreciation journey!

Tell her to make a steak like none you've ever had before! 5 course meal with asparagus in each course, including dessert! or ground beef! or shrimp! or cilantro :-p! chicken dinner without any chicken! Mexican flavored chinese dumplings, chinese tacos! her fusion stuff is so smart and innovative (korean rice noodle cacio e pepe!). Sohla is amazing but the wheel might be a little gimmicky.
YES THIS
There's something so wonderful about watching Sohla gleefully making candy for andrew as she goes "oh hes going to Hate this" truly the perfect depiction of pranking a coworker

I loved Gourmet Makes as much as the next person but seeing Sohla just go with the flow when things go wrong instead of have a mental breakdown is refreshing lmao 💀
She’s just having fun and enjoying herself, that’s what we want
Claire was constrained by having to make something that looks and tastes right though.
And her crew seemed to be jerks too, really.
@@recoil53 agreed! I love gourmet makes, but seeing claire stressed all the time wasn't my fave. When she stepped into doing Brad's show, she seemed to have so much fun.
And I also agree it was likely her crew that contributed to that.
@@olimelonhead12 I think the producer put a lot of pressure on her, both in terms of time limits for the shoots and level of perfection he expected of her. It went from being a fun recreation of foods she liked and a strong challenge that required problem-solving, to just her striving for perfection with insufficient time and resources. The fact that she went back to every shoot really says something about her commitment though!
@@olimelonhead12 When Claire did It's Alive with Hunzi, she was outright surprised that a crew could be nice.
Her crew will keep throwing things at her even when she tells them to stop and she doesn't like it. I also feel like they pressure her when she needs to take a moment.
Yes her stress was a little funny at first, but then it's too much. Of course she didn't sign a new contract and now BA/CN is minus a money maker.

I cannot understate just how much I love this series, this episode, Andrew, Sohla and just the dynamic of it all. I am 100% in, it's the rare thing that just feels like it's for me, my vibe, the rare wry-dry-wholesome content.
this further cements sohla as being a real life mad scientist
It feels like Sohla doesn't know the camera is on and is just having fun showing us stuff.
It's strange but not in a weird way. I appreciate it alot.
Like, she's not doing an act or amplifying anythin , it's just her and she's having fun, it's wholesome.
agreed, especially with this longer episode where there’s even more of her thought process it feels like when you’re just talking to yourself while you do something. like you think of a stupid joke, say it to yourself then go “huh that was stupid”
You just described perfectly why it is so enjoyable to watch her
She also has Jess to talk too, since Jess runs the camera. And sometimes the kitchen manager is down there helping. So she's not just talking to herself, like Andrew normally does.
This show really do be "STUMP Sohla" sometimes but this week it's more like "Sohla's 40 minutes of dangerous ideas none of you mortals were prepared for"

The cilantro was probably the most diabolical of them all.
There's 2 types of people, ones who enjoy cilantro and the others (like myself) who have a genetic predisposition for it to taste like soap.
