  • Probably you have also wondered how efficient is the Battery Charge Driving Mode. I put that to test in this video and the results are way beyond my expectations...

    As @Baranoeda pointed " If you drove 12 km with an increase of 5 liter/100 km that is 0.6 liter as already pointed out by some. Its like magic! That is 0.6 liter to gain 10 kilometer electric range"
    That means if you take 1.6 euro for a liter of petrol and multiply it by 0.6 liters you get 0.96 euro per 10km, half what it costs at the charger, plus you warm up your oil/cat faster

  • @Baranoeda

    As some already pointed out, you had a slight error in the calculation. But a super great video, thanks! If you drove 12 km with an increase of 5 liter/100 km that is 0.6 liter as already pointed out by some. Its like magic! That is 0.6 liter to gain 10 kilometer electric range, which is 6 liter/100 km. That is about the consumption you would expect from a gasoline car! I really cannot understand how the recharging can be that efficient. So the recharging is basically, "as efficient" as driving on gasoline.

    I am driving a Passat GTE for 85k km now.
    Doing this in City is useless, but doing this with 90 to 100km/h it could be efficient to use.
    But only If...you cannot charge at the destination and if you drive only upto 60km/h afterwards with this Energy in City.
    Driving electric is much more efficent in City than using the gas engine, which helps to make it efficient in sum again.
    And charging at the sweet spot of a gas engine at 90km/h helps that the consumption while charging is not going up too much.
    Doing this in the city with this low speed should be avoided.

    it is a very good feature to ensure that the ICE operates throughtout a certain time and does not have to start & stop too often. this is important for example to reach operation conditions where the engine oil can sufficiently regenerate.

  • @1510km

    It's not 8 euros though is it.. as it was an extra 5L per 100km. So you'd have to travel 100km to use that extra 8E. You need to work out the distance travelled in km in those 18 minutes and then do futher calculations. Rough maths.. it would probably work out around the same. If 5L costs you 8 euroes. Lets say you averaged 30kmh/40kmh over those 18 minutes. So roughly distance travelled in 18 minutes 12/13km. If my calculations are correct it costed you around 60cent to gain those 10km.
    Edit: I didn't see Peter's comment below

    In initial few minutes, it charges at very slow rate. After a few minutes it would suddenly start to charge quite quickly (-20kwh/100km while 10L/100km).

    what is performance like in pure combustion engine mode, with the additional weight? I currently have a mk6 1.4 tsi Golf

    • @redline589
      @redline589 3 года назад

      the 1.4 in the GTE is 104kw or 140bhp without the battery power.

    • @josefv-y8m
      @josefv-y8m 3 года назад

      There is no pure combustion engine mode...but you will drive in Hybrid-Mode at anytime, which means you get energy back while braking.
      Even not being in B-Mode, but simply by using the Brakes...it will regen first (shown in the Display) and if this is not enough, it will start to use the brakes.
      With empty batterie at 100km/h in Average, I was able to consume only 4.5l with my Passat GTE.
      This is lower than the pure ICE in the same Passat, due to Hybrid-Mode...and the weight does not matter, but only for acceleration at 0km/h.
      This is more about the cost of this car compared to the pure ICE, if this is helpful to buy.
      For me it is an ideal car, since I drive about 12k km pure electric each year, even with this tiny batterie.
      The more short distances you have to drive, the more the car is good for you.
      The more you are close to the pure ICE consumption during your daily drive, the more wrong is this car for you.
      And...ABC...Always be connected (to the wallbox)...otherwise you should not buy it or just buy a mild hybrid, like the "eTSI" version in Golf VIII...
      And regarding Performance...yes it even accelerates better with empty batterie, since still some power during start within a "hidden" part.
      Since you always start with eEngine...no Starter at all in this car...it feels always better compared to waiting for the gears to be used and the ICE.

  • @Andersljungberg

    I think you are counting a little wrong, it is 15 liters at 100 km or 1.5 liters at 10 kilometers. so that you charge the car with a petrol engine probably means that you consume 6 decilitres more Per 10 km. then I was also pointing out that a car consumes more petrol in city driving than on country road driving

      Think a full hybrid car is better at it, such as Toyota. NOTE a full hybrid car does not charge the battery from a charging station. a full hybrid car is charged using only a petrol engine. Do not think there is any advantage hybrid that is based on diesel

    For the 10km charge to cost 8Euro, you would've had to drive 100KM, because you said your gas consumption increased by 5L per 100km. Did you drive 100km to get those 10km of batery range? I highly doubt it.
    You drove for 18min, in the city, with a lets say a generous 50kph average speed, so you covered around 15km. If for 100km you'd use up 5L more gas (14 vs 9), then for those 15km you used 0.75L more gas than average. At your stated price of 1.6E, that means it cost you 1.2Euro in gas to charge those 10Km of battery range. Thats slightly above double what the electric current costs you. Nowhere near your 20times.
    Also, 18min to get 10km of battery is probably half as much time as it would take if you plugged in. Twice as fast for double the price.
