The higher the 100s, the more twists to the individual woolen yarns, and therefore the finer and lighter and more drapable the woven cloth. Super 100s is nice everyday wear grade, super 180s is very fine, special occasion level.
The problem with this response it it doesn’t explain the number. The count is the number of Hanks of yarn per pound of weight. In other words the higher the number, the thinner, lighter, and LESS DURABLE the fabric. The higher the number the more “luxurious,” but that Luxury feel sacrifices durability because is sacrifices weight and thread density. This is why billionaire Donald Trump always looks terrible. He buys super expensive super 180s and super 200s suits, wears them all day long, so they fucking wrinkle like crazy. They wrinkle because they are so lightweight. Also these suits wear like pijamas. They feel great against the skin, but unless you’re at a black tie event standing around sipping cocktails for only a few hours at a time, you’re better off getting a lower number. In the 1960’s we couldn’t make anything with a higher count than 80. Which is where the “super” designation came from, since 100 hanks per pound was then-thought to be impossible. Once mills cracked the code and reached 100hanks/lb they came up with the “super” designation to sell it as superior. It’s marketing bullshit. If you want to look good and wear a suit that drapes naturally with gravity, and doesn’t wrinkle easily, and will last forever, then get a heavier fabric suit like a a 60 or 80. Try donegal twead.
I like the reply @ryanpipkin , mills take a kilo of wool and elongate that fiber until it snaps at 1000 meters. This has to do with the diameter of the fibers measured in microns. A super 100 is 18.5 microns. The diameter of one strand of wool. When the wool is elongated further to 1200 meters, it is a Super 120 and the diameter has now become smaller at 17.5 microns. As technology allows to create smaller diameters without the strand snapping such as Super 150s and Super 200s down to 16.5 microns and 13.5 microns respectively, the fabrics are not only finer, hence the higher super number, but also softer, making them more delicate, more easy to wrinkle and harder to care for. Suits above Super 180s are not for everyday and should be hung in the closet after each wear so any wrinkles could fall out, which they will overnight. Super 100s is very inexpensive these days and not considered luxury suiting any longer. Super 120s is perfect for daily use and since Super 150s has become commonplace it too is used for daily wear. Above that, prices go up exponentially for suits. Now in terms of summer or winter suits the super number will not tell you that. There are Super 150s for winter & Super 120s for winter that have a mill finish also known as a flannel finish. A super 120s winter suit will feel heavier than the 150s, but both are flannel and for winter if they have the mill finishing. We are talking a difference grams per meter squared. I have not seen Super 80s, since the 1980s. It doesn't feel good to the touch and super 100s and 120s are plentiful in cheaper brands these days so no luxury suit companies use anything lower. Customers these days are highly educated. In regards to what Trump wears, its off the rack Brioni. From what I know the navy suit is probably 150s or 160s about $4500-$6500. A Brioni Super 210s is over $14,000 these days. He can afford it, but I don't think he is the type to spend that much on one suit. He wears a new white shirt everyday from Brioni at $810 each. Even Elon Musk doesn't spend that on suits. He wears Tom Ford about $7,000.
The super '100' numbers refer to the number of sick-dope-swag that the jacket has. For example, if it reads "Super 150", then the piece has 150 sick-dope-swags. 🤝🏼
Thanks to your videos I started looking into sourcing men’s shirts and I really like this niche! I am a 63 years young 😉 woman that has never really liked woman’s fashion … going to continue watching all your videos my friend 😊 love how calm and patient you explain things to us. Blessings 🤗
Same! 65-year-old woman here that's been thrifting and reselling since 2000. Also don't care about or keep up with women's fashions. I love good quality men's clothing, always on the lookout for it anyway for my husband and son.
@@kristinebailey6554 OMG… I am. 67 year old grandmother in Scottsdale, AZ getting ready to start a reselling business for men’s wear!🤑 I was a high level professional in the medical field & never really cared about fashion for myself. I used to resell these and agree, less picked over at stores, higher ROI but I stopped flipping them. Most of them take FOREVER to sell, return rates are higher because people think they should be a freaking perfect fit when this type of clothing often needs to be tailored anyways and they take up too much space. If you have the patience and space for them, then definitely recommended for men's clothing resellers.
I scored an Italian sports jacket 100% wool That fit me perfectly except for it was too long for $13. I spent $45 at the tailor to get it fitted. Now I'm rocking An $800 easy Value for under $60. I feel like a genius.
I'm finding good clothing frequently at Goodwill bins thats selling for $20, $30, $40. I don't even bother with regular Goodwill anymore. The bins just makes everything much easier.
I’ve sold 15-20 suits or sport jackets and I just picked up 5 more to list. I like them because I’m not a big reseller and the margins are high, but they do sit for a while to get that high margin. Learning to “pinch test” to check for fused or canvassed construction can be a big help with whether to investigate further or buy. There are many obscure brands that make high quality tailoring that can be tough to comp on ebay but will sell. Fused is cheap construction, half canvassed means your at least looking at a jacket with an original retail price of several hundred dollars, full canvass starts at around $1k these days so you immediately know it’s high end.

Goodwill on 16th has officially changed its name to Greedwill. I mostly sell hard goods and books. Every now and then I come up with stuff they slipped on but at the register they have literally taken stuff away from me and said something like “sorry this is out here by mistake”. They all know what I do, and pay special attention every single time to what I’m buying.
Apparently we have a UK Suit shortage at the moment, pandemic has meant more people working from home, less in office so less retailers are selling new suits, which has created a limited supply and also a bit of panic in the market, so everyone wants suits now.
You know the thing is I have a pinstripe jacket it's that's all it is it's just a jacket I wear it just fine I don't wear that often but I do like it what's the temperature outside in the fade on it so it doesn't matter
Looked up the 100s, basically the same as thread count but the sheep are specifically bred to produce finer fibers. After finding it at the bins I'm now finding Isaia everywhere, just came home with more
I bought the contents of a closet a couple of months back at auction for $60. It had 30-pairs of jeans (Levis, Wranglers, Urban Pipeline), 70+ dress shirts from lots of good brands, 30+ suit coats and 30+ pairs of assorted dress pants. It also had designer leather jackets, Levis jackets, Puma gear, Gore-tex weather suits, Wolverine boots, Rockport and Allen Edmonds shoes (25+ pairs) and the list goes on...one of my best pick ups! But, I've been balking at doing anything with the suit coats. The Real Real might just be the solution! Thanks!
Thanks for all your advice and tips. I’ve been watching for awhile but don’t think I’ve commented much. I found Zegna and Hugo Boss suits at a local church thrift for $10 each and sold them both very quickly for $100 a piece. I’m learning😁
THANK YOU for this video!! I never looked in the suits before seeing this. I took your info, went to the thrift and got several Loro Piana (o?) tag jackets and suits, one Hickey Freeman suit with Loro Piana tag and a couple Vitale Barberis Canonico tag jackets I also got a gorgeous vintage Pendleton Tweed jacket. I picked up a Tuxedo, too, which had very good comps! I paid $3 a piece for the jackets and suits and $1 for the Tux! One jacket sold in a day for $75.......... THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!!
I found some really beautiful Alden boots the other day for $12 and I had every intention to sell them for a crazy profit but they fit me like a glove so I totally understand the temptation. Ended up keeping them for myself.
Thank you for the great video. Picked a few Italian suits when I find them. But they are just sitting. Would you be able to do a video on your processes? I am not entirely confident on listing these myself. i.e. Safe cleaning methods, correct storage, which pics customers want to see, proper flat lay measurements to include, how to correctly pack a suit for shipping? Really appreciate your videos. Thank you.
LOL. I just stumbled on some jackets and I was looking for some listings tips. I love that you jump in to making this vid knowing the super number issue was going to come up. Rather than brushing up on it so you could pretend to know everything you just said “Fk it, bring the hate.” 😆😆😆 I hope my comment doesn’t come off as rude. Liked and subscribed.
Such great information! Thanks for giving me the know-how to tackle the suit section. Because of your channel and knowledge, I’ve really enjoyed getting into selling men’s clothing, and it’s proven to be lucrative!
Good info, thank you. I typically avoid blazers, it seems to sit a while as in my mind people lost interest in career clothes with Covid. Glad your experience is different. Mark Nason shoes and boots sell for $40 to over $200. Many of his shoes are from Italy, and includes trendy, distressed hot sellers for boho looks.
Yah one day i was like you know what, im going to check the suits, i found a giorgio armani suit i bought but the shoulders are a little too, wide, so im probably going to get it tailored one day or something.
hello hello! been busy with the newly purchased townhouse so this is the first time in 2 months that i got the chance to watch your video again. first of all ,your hair had grown so long i thought i wanted to cut them a bit hahaha. second of all, thanks for the very informative video on suits! moved from LA to Vegas and didn't get lucky to shop suits. third of all, i really will push into selling more men's stuff come 2022!thank you for all you do Matt you inspire me and keep me going reselling when there are times i'm about to give up!
I learned SO much about selling mens suits & sport coats from Rick at Thrift Fever. (I'm still sad that his channel is gone because it was a great resource.) You should 💯 keep the SIMMS boots for yourself.
Wow...thank you so much for this informative video!! I definitely never look in the suit section! Heading there tomorrow!! Thank you for the excellent tips!!
Question for you or any of the commenters.... What is your opinion on big and tall size suits, 52 and up, in bad or no name brands? Ive found the the sell through rate on 2 piece suits in these sizes is over 100% before factoring in brand. Ive found a bunch of crappy ones and have had some luck selling them but they are also the ones that sit longer. I cant seem to predict them. I had one sell for 100 the other day, unbranded. Ive had several that dont even get looked at
Like another viewer said, "thanks thrift jesus" for all this valuable info. Your lovely locks reminded me of my unintentional pandemic project. Fearing infection, I avoided getting haircuts for over a year and got enough of my freakishly fast growing hair to donate to a children's cancer wig-making charity!
I always check the sportcoat/suit jacket aisle. It's something I'm definitely still learning about, and I do my due diligence looking up comps on eBay, but as you said, most people aren't looking at them. Living in Kentucky, we don't see as many luxury brands show up in the suits/jackets, but sometimes. Regardless, if I can find a jacket I can sell for $40+, it's worth investing the $6.59 for them, which is what Goodwill here charges. As far as Burberry, I've found a couple Burberry polo-style shirts and they sell pretty fast for a good $40-50.
I certainly have been shying away from buying jackets unless I can find the matching pants in my local thrifts. I have many sport coats currently that just are not selling, but I could just be listing them poorly or giving them bad titles. My suit knowledge is limited, but a little better now! Thank you!
I cannot catch the name of your book channel. Please tell me as I love books also! I need tips as to which have value. I did recently sell a Bible for $175 and picked up a vintage set of 24 volumes which should sell for around $200 though!
Matt! Good to see you up and about, hope you’re feeling well. I think you’re right about suits and jackets being a neglected category. I have a vintage Alexander McQueen in my closet that I no longer wear, and have been thinking of listing. I know enough about higher end menswear to make it pay; but since moving to a small town, I hustle just about anything. I’m expanding my knowledge into categories I never looked at twice before now. I think of you, when I stumble upon one of your bolo brands.
So after watching your last video I decided to stop avoiding menswear. I was at the bins today and I picked up some suit jackets on a whim, and of course the 1st thing that you say in the video is still look for that green patch with that name and 1 of the suits that I got has it! I'm psyched and can't wait to see what it's worth.
I figured I might as well test out suits at the bins. Got a Barney's suit and a Brooks Brothers suit jacket with the Piana tag. We will see how it goes!
I think suits are under-picked bc of suit usage decrease in the general population, as well. Working from home, etc., then if working at home you would only have a use for suit for funeral, interview, wedding or some special occasion. Also, down South here, you will not be able to sell heavy wool. I was lucky enough to find several designer brand suits to fit my husband in the regular store I thrift in for twenty-five cents (no, really). I DO look at suits and I know quality. If you learn womens clothing first, the mens suits are easy. You are RIGHT about the pin striping being less of a "separate." Thanks for the "sport jacket" terminology or naming convention preference suggestion; sounds good. Will use mannequin if I find anything that nice. Super great tips!!!!
What is the best way to check comps on sport coats? Look up the Manufacturer and the fabric maker? I don’t understand the difference between all the labels in a sport coat or suit jacket.
Do Loro Piana fabric suits still hold value if the sleeves have wear on them that makes the fabric more "shiny" - when it looks more shiny and bare and less "woolen"? I've definitely found suit jackets made from Loro Piana but the sleeves (down towards the cuff) often look and feel more worn than the rest of the jacket, so I've passed on several. Is this a normal thing that just happens with the fabric or should that kind of wear just be best left on the rack?
I have everything needed for presenting suits, I mean everything I have an old school mangler a home dry cleaner mannequin steamer all the brushes and a dozen waiting to be listed. I usually don’t list until I have 8 or 10 but they’re a pain so I’m weeks behind. Also just throwing in my unverified feeling the finer thread supers are great summer sellers, especially with light or no lining.
I wish I would have seen this video last month. My local thrift store had all suits for $1 clearing them out to make room for summer clothes. Slightly kicking myself this morning
You are absolutely right, the reason I generally avoid suits is because of the the extra work that goes into selling them... I probably shouldn't be doing that...
I sell suits and you are right...more profit than anything clothing. I have been working with suits since 1989 so I know my clothing. My avg sale per item is $57 and its due to my suit sales.
If you have a chance, a quick bit about how to actually ship a suit would be pretty darn wonderful. I have some vintage tuxes that were my Dads in the 50s and 60s and hate to think they will not go to someone who could love them.
None of them are sports coats and should not be worn as a standalone. They are orphaned suit coats... These have too low of a nap and high of a sheen with a minimalistic fabric texture.
I have a men's suit I haven't listed yet. I am hesitant because a receipt for alterations was in the pocket and had me wondering about that. I'm pretty sure most men will have their suits altered, in some way, but is it a plus or minus to try selling a suit with a bunch of alterations? At least I have the receipt, so I know what was done and can note it in my listing.
Thank you for making this! I am new to reselling but been at it for 3 months and am hooked. I heard blazers were a good category to sell because no one touches them but I know nothing about blazers especially mens other than what material is good like wool and silk. I was at goodwill yesterday and the amount of suites there was just crazy! There were so many with wool/silk blend but I was not familiar with any designer so I ended up leaving all of them behind so I could do more research. Do you run comps on all the suites you pick up? If you see a good designer like Loro Piana do you get it without looking up comps? And how long does it take to sell them? I hate sitting on items longer than 3 months. Do items sell pretty fast on The Real Real? Yeah and I am pretty sure I saw a Laura Piana label yesterday too! Thanks again!
Hi Matt, did you remove the name tag before selling or kept it? I found a sports jacket and it has a tag name. I don’t know if I should remove it or not. Thank you in advance!
In my experience, desirable clothing will sell regardless of crappy photos. I recently sold 3 J Press suit jackets/blazers within a few days of listing by just hanging them on a hanger on the back of my closet door. I'll have a better setup in my new house with a big basement. For now, I'd say if you don't have the means, just list it. It will likely sell regardless. :)
I avoid the suits because I don't think they're fast sellers. Most men are going to meetings and work in casual business wear. At least that's what I see when I ride the transit. I may buy a suit jacket if it's below $5. Recently sold a Michael Kors jacket which I bought for .33c. It was a no brainer. But workers are still remote and men are not buying suits and jackets the way they used to. However, consigning to the RR might make some sense if you get the jackets for really really low price (.33c)
Hi Matt another great video. Thank you. Quick questions do you ship suits and jackets priority mail in flat rate boxes? Do you charge for shipping or offer free ship on ebay?
Simms anything sells like crazy for me. I’ve never come across boots but a few times have picked up their shirts. Their boots brand new go for over $100.

Rather than brushing up on it so you could pretend to know everything you just said “Fk it, bring the hate.” 😆😆😆
I hope my comment doesn’t come off as rude. Liked and subscribed.
Such great information! Thanks for giving me the know-how to tackle the suit section. Because of your channel and knowledge, I’ve really enjoyed getting into selling men’s clothing, and it’s proven to be lucrative!
Thank you sir. You have helped me more then you will ever know, thank you🙏
So glad to see you back. You help all Posh sellers!
Thanks so much for the video and information
Good info, thank you. I typically avoid blazers, it seems to sit a while as in my mind people lost interest in career clothes with Covid. Glad your experience is different. Mark Nason shoes and boots sell for $40 to over $200. Many of his shoes are from Italy, and includes trendy, distressed hot sellers for boho looks.
I just found my first ever Loro Piana reversible hooded jacket a few days ago. Ironic that you start you video with this designer.
Yah one day i was like you know what, im going to check the suits, i found a giorgio armani suit i bought but the shoulders are a little too, wide, so im probably going to get it tailored one day or something.
Would love to see a follow up with how much Real Real paid. Ive thought of using them but haven't as of yet, I may start
I have a Coach Coat and The Real Real didn't take it, I think it depends on the brand! Good Luck
hello hello! been busy with the newly purchased townhouse so this is the first time in 2 months that i got the chance to watch your video again. first of all ,your hair had grown so long i thought i wanted to cut them a bit hahaha. second of all, thanks for the very informative video on suits! moved from LA to Vegas and didn't get lucky to shop suits. third of all, i really will push into selling more men's stuff come 2022!thank you for all you do Matt you inspire me and keep me going reselling when there are times i'm about to give up!
11:45 “I stepped away from shoes…” lol
Imma have to start looking for some Sports coats!!! I definitely shy away from them and dress pants.
Why would you avoid the Burberry’s tag? The older tag stuff does well in England.
I learned SO much about selling mens suits & sport coats from Rick at Thrift Fever. (I'm still sad that his channel is gone because it was a great resource.)
You should 💯 keep the SIMMS boots for yourself.
I learned most of what I know about suits and dress shoes from Rick.
Ive had several that dont even get looked at
Thanks for information. I see you wear linen shirt.. 😊
What is real reel? What’s the consignment shops? Why jotmoist link or out name in letters on screen?
So excited to see the new book!!!!
The Real Real returned my John varvatos suits not taking any longer I will attempt to Put up on my posh closet. Thanks for the tips
I certainly have been shying away from buying jackets unless I can find the matching pants in my local thrifts. I have many sport coats currently that just are not selling, but I could just be listing them poorly or giving them bad titles. My suit knowledge is limited, but a little better now! Thank you!
I concentrate more on men's sleepwear and loungewear. Have been doing quite well in the sales department with that category.
Hamerjani Bros. are top shelf!
Great content, as usual! You have the best personality! 😊
Love it. Great as always.
Congrats Amanda. What was the green patch?
Lol I didn't know how to spell it Loro Piana 😂
I figured I might as well test out suits at the bins. Got a Barney's suit and a Brooks Brothers suit jacket with the Piana tag. We will see how it goes!
There he is!
I bought a Carlo Rosselli Men’s black wool blazer with tags Made in Italy I can not find a single comp I just don’t know if it’s worth anything
Just got a pair of canonico brooks brothers pants for $4 maybe 2 weeks back, need to get around to listing them, my death pile is a bit chunky
The initial price can end up as only a small fraction of the high cost of alterations. A good tailor of you can find one will not work cheaply😮
Thank you for the suit info. I've only found Isiai once in my area and it sold for $100. I'm always looking for it.
Newer to reselling, and I sure appreciate the open honesty on your channel. Thanks so much for sharing what you've learned.
Appreciate the knowledge. Love learning about new categories
You are absolutely right, the reason I generally avoid suits is because of the the extra work that goes into selling them... I probably shouldn't be doing that...
New subscriber - love your channel. Can you talk a bit about how you pack your suits to ship?
I sell suits and you are right...more profit than anything clothing. I have been working with suits since 1989 so I know my clothing. My avg sale per item is $57 and its due to my suit sales.
Where do you send your suits into ?
If you have a chance, a quick bit about how to actually ship a suit would be pretty darn wonderful. I have some vintage tuxes that were my Dads in the 50s and 60s and hate to think they will not go to someone who could love them.
Loro Piana. Got it. Super 3000's. Got it.
Just be sure to take the appropriate measurements and note in the description that it was altered
If you don't know exactly what you're looking at, yes, look up comps always. Most suits take at least 3 months to sell. Price low to flip faster.
@@ThriftALife Thank you!
Why do most of the suit coats at Goodwill not have the size tags?
Hi Matt, did you remove the name tag before selling or kept it? I found a sports jacket and it has a tag name. I don’t know if I should remove it or not. Thank you in advance!
Alright, this peaked my interest into attempting to sell a suit/sport jacket.
How do you prepare those suits for selling, dry clean or sell as is?
Hello there, thanks for all you share. How are you feeling these days?
Up and down. Thanks for asking.
Suits are amazing! But they are returned like crazy. Atm have 3-4 suits being returned 😂 people just dont look at measurements i guess lol
Hemrajani Brothers are high-quality suits that now go by the name Divijj Bespoke I think
Im surprised more people didn't comment. His entry level starts at $2,000.
But how do you know if its been tapered, hemmed or altered?
Whats your thoughts on suits with pleated pants, are they older... outdated ?
Genius level breakdown.
What about a 100% silk jacket?
In my experience, desirable clothing will sell regardless of crappy photos. I recently sold 3 J Press suit jackets/blazers within a few days of listing by just hanging them on a hanger on the back of my closet door. I'll have a better setup in my new house with a big basement. For now, I'd say if you don't have the means, just list it. It will likely sell regardless. :)
Hamerjani Bros. make bespoke suits, etc. They are very expensive jackets and suits!
So do you feel in this post Covid environment where people are not really wearing suits anymore to the office that suits still are a good seller?
I was curious about this as well.
great info thanks!
Link to your Book Channel please? Ty!
They can be fast sellers if you're willing to way underprice the market
Hi Matt another great video. Thank you. Quick questions do you ship suits and jackets priority mail in flat rate boxes? Do you charge for shipping or offer free ship on ebay?
What’s your Seller name on eBay?
Simms anything sells like crazy for me. I’ve never come across boots but a few times have picked up their shirts. Their boots brand new go for over $100.
