The Palatine minfig featured in Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga was my favorite. Honestly I loved all the minifig designs from that game, they weren't too detailed but looked decent and cool
What’s more confusing is Ryan’s take. In the diorama review he said verbatim “…this is one of the better Emperor Palpatine minfigures ever. The face prints makes this figure!” But now it seems like he’s flip flopping by preferring the older one.
I'm loving the current Lego Star Wars diorama era. They've been putting out some gorgeous looking sets, and the dioramas are perfect compliments to a UCS collection.
While both sets are about the same location, they serve vastly different purposes. The Duel on the Death Star is much more expansive and has more play functions but the Emperor’s throne room has better details and is better for a display. While I do love the design of the New set but I wish it was a bit larger like the Duel On Death Star, and came with the two royal guards. Though more stuff means a higher price and big lego sets Nowadays already cost more than a Kidney and Liver, I couldn't imagine the price of the set if it was upgraded.
I normally only watch your non-review/comparison videos (as I typically just buy the sets I think look cool without looking at a review) - this was the first review/comparison video I've watched in a long time and I have to say - you've come A LONG way. This was really well done from an editing standpoint, most impressive.
Am I the only one that doesn’t like the new Luke Skywalker hair piece? I like the original hair piece… I love that LEGO changed the lightsabers to that foggy texture, instead of the translucent that we used to have!
By the way, I love your channel just wanted to point that out. Also, I’ve actually been wanting you to do this like this video. I have actually been thinking this would be cool if you did good I can’t believe you actually did it. Oh end it is an amazing video. Obviously what would you expect? You are of course just amazing at making these videos.
when you put them together like that at 5:04, I feel like you could actually remove the throne from the play set, then use the play set as an extension of the throne room diorama. They sorta look like they belong together
Are you talking about just the thrones, or are you talking about the throne areas? Cause if it’s the throne areas, you’re never going to be able to use the play set as an extension of the diorama. The section the diorama represents is just too big to go along side everything else the play set represents. If it’s just the thrones, then yeah that’s an easy switch.
This is one of your most interest comparisons. These are two great sets that are both amazing in their own way and it's really hard to say which is better.
In my opinion this is really just weather you want a display set or a play set for kids so it’s weird comparison but you did a good job comparing the two great video 👍
The sizes really aren’t as far off as you might initially think. The throne and window is so much better as a display in the new set, but the old is still a nice playset.
They should maybe sort of combine elements of each set sometime in the future, I like the throne & window better on the new version but I like the imperial guards underneath in the 2020 version
I’ve noticed that diorama sets and big, 1 to 1 scale MOCs can sometimes look quite barren and plain simply because they’re so accurate. I just prefer prefer a playset that encapsulates and highlights every interesting part of a scene, like how the 2020 version does. Damn, I wish I bought it.
Like the comparison although I really liked old chart method more than new one. Old one I can see more than new ine something about the colors. Keep up the great work.
the comparisons make sense, and for that reason I totally get the value of the playset, but for my interests, I dont play, I display, and that large window the emperor sits in front of is just so much more impactful for me in the capturing of that scene in the diorama.
There’s no point to roping in the 2015 model and the 2002 set… well same thing lol. I’ll make a “short/reel” for the 2002 set comparison though. This vid was specifically these because of how recently the 2020 set was released and then having the same retail price. 👍👍
I have the two throne room play sets, but I'll also give it to the diorama as the best one for display. In fact, I intend to buy it precisely so it can replace the previous throne room set I have next to the UCS Super-Star Destroyer.
Great to see you doing more diverse content! - I'm with you Ryan - I buy them all - but If I had to choose it would be Diorama for the exact same reason as you - Display ability is just better. I'd be interested to see someone expand the diorama into a larger emperor throne room scene with even more detail. I think you have accurately described why LEGO has produced both play sets and display sets... again - great review - Nice editing and fun to watch content.
It's a fun story, but back when the original version of the playset came out I was like 12 years old and I really, really wanted it, but never asked my mom for it because of the price. Now I'm 19 and today I came across the diorama set and bought it in a heartbeat
I already expanded the width of the 75291 set by 4 studs and made the window larger and deeper. I had planned on trying to make a new window based on a moc, but the peices were not cheap or easy to find. The new set has a perfect window, and i will be trying to combine the new set into the centre platform of the old set and expanding the sides. So for me, a combined set is the only answer. Very happy with the new one! =o)
I really BADLY wish they released Jabba's Throne Room instead of this diorama. I got the 2020 version and just can't force myself to get excited about this one. If I didn't fully believe in the potential of the diorama collection, I'd easily give this a pass but the collector in me will probably pick it up at some point anyway...
I have a strange bit of luck when it comes to these two sets and finding them for cheap. Back in 2022, I found the 2020 set brand new for $60 at a game exchange and I bought it there. This year I found the 2023 set at walmart on clearance for $40. I basically paid half the price it would to get both sets on release day just by being patient. I love both of them so much and I’m proud to have them in my collection.
Thank you for the detailed review! 🙂 Two different sets with two different audiences...So for me personally, I would go for the 2020 set due to the minifigures, size. In the end there is no right or wrong, it's just a matter of personal taste.
That window on the new Diorama set is just awesome!! I am very much into displaying my Lego sets so for me it's a clear choice in favor of the Diorama.
I think I had the playset confused with a remake of the prequel version on first sight, as it looks so similar. Play features/worth def playset ... I do think the diorama makes more of an impact and is more unique, but will wait for a huge sale before I pick it up.
I agree with every point you presented. I already own the play set but I’m going to pick up the diorama because it looks so freaking cool! I’m really digging these dioramas but am definitely disappointed by how the Endor diorama looks. One question, I know that you don’t rely on the price per piece for the value of a set but is there value to the price per mini figure count that you look at, let’s say 5.00 per mini figure? 2022 has that 35.00 4+ set that I refuse to buy because that build and price is ridiculous and I can’t see paying 10+ dollars just for mini figs. Anyway, love your videos and your honesty in your opinions about LEGO Star Wars sets.
I remember getting the upgrade in 2021 from the 2016/2017 version and that version going into the parts collection. I think I’m gonna get the new one but wait for like my birthday to get it or something. I do really like the play set for its display value with its many more features and the new one is better in that category but not worth me paying for another one already
I think that they did the pupils of palpatine away to be more like the other minifigures that have special eye color, like ahsoka, luminara etc, they also dont have pupil
I like the 2023 version better. The old one way all over the place, and the new one is so much cleaner. I might consider picking it up if I ever see it on shelves for a good price.
I bought the first one in 2015 and I really loved that set. I bought the newer one about a year ago after it retired. It was just $90 at Walmart. My plan was to combine both of them into a larger diorama. Then rumors of this new one came out and I still haven’t opened the 2021 model. I got a job at LEGO so maybe I’ll save up $150 and buy 3 of these with the discount. Maybe I’ll sell the old one and use that to buy the new one?
There are two scenes in EP.6 where the Royal Guards are seen: 1) When the Emperor disembarks his shuttle on board the second Death Star, he is accompanied by several of them, and 2) when Vader introduces Luke to the Emperor within his throne room there are at least two guarding the inside of the door, and the Emperor says "Guards, leave us." to allow for more privacy, and it shows them leaving. And they were first seen chronologically in Ep.2
My guess is LEGO reused a ROS Palpatine minifigure from an unreleased set. Makes sense they’d recycle minifigs and call it a day. I like the 2020 Palps but I’m also a classic Grey Palps minifig collector too. Not a fan of blank eyes Palps.
If someone hasn’t done it yet, these 2 sets should definitely be merged into an awsome rebrickable set, I may take crack at it in studio, I honestly forgot about the old one till I saw this vid👌🏼
I agree on the palpatine design, finished the newer set today. like they really didn’t have to remove the pupils it’s not even movie accurate. still looks cool, but it doesn’t feel the exact same.
If I were picking one over the other, would likely go with the diorama set. Mainly because I really like to display my sets. I do already have the 2020 set but I still think I will pick up the diorama to use as a display piece.
I liked the new palpatine face print. For the lego minifig style it makes sense not having pupils. Just like I prefer the first darth maul face print. It is just weird to see them with pupils.
for me im a big display person and really dont like the bare bones look of the playsets, plus i own all the other dioramas so it will be nice to have them all line a shelf in order
ROTJ was the Star Wars I watched the most as a kid, so any related sets have an immediate attraction, but I've already got the playset so don't feel I can justify the diorama at full retail price. If there's an opportunity to pick it up at a discount at some point during its run though, I'll absolutely be picking it up.
If you could only have one of these sets, which are you taking?
2023!
New One
2023, the displayability is much better than the 2020 version
both because I like sets that have some playability but I like both
2023
I love the idea of this comparison. Its the same scene and at the same price but it is just for 2 different audiences
inflation probably. Not inflation in general but lego’s version which means increasing the price to a stupid amount just because they can
there are so many sets that I wanted but never got them
If I knew this was coming out I never would have bought the 2020 version

it looks more like "palpatine" from episode 9, I recall that one not having pupils; maybe lego got them confused?
I'm loving the current Lego Star Wars diorama era. They've been putting out some gorgeous looking sets, and the dioramas are perfect compliments to a UCS collection.

I agree. I wish the prices were lower but that could be said about most lego
Agreed although they are priced $10 to $20 too much
id love to see a attack of the clones one of the huge fight at the end
The new one is a much better display, but I still prefer the playset.
I would love to see someone modify the new one so it shows the full scene like the 2020 model(obviously much bigger)
The window and throne design on the 2023 throne room is the best out of the two
The back of the window looks like a bit of a mess but it's a neat build when viewed with the Emperor's throne.
@@arcturionblade1077 I agree and it’s super movie accurate

The playset actually looks pretty good. I'd love to combine them into one epic throne room moc!
The new throne room could’ve benefited from the 2 royal guards and maybe would’ve made it worth the price, and maybe the shaft Palps gets thrown down
you are the first person to ever say that
I actually prefer no guards, I didn’t like how it obstructed the view of the 2020 set and glad they did not do the same for the 2023 set
@FatMan the current price is already $100…
The guards dont belong, and the shaft is at the bottom of the staircase that leads up to this section the diorama depicts.
