I always appreciate Jang’s candid honesty and straightforwardness and it comes out especially in this video. It’s so refreshing. I have been into LEGO since I was 6-7 years old, especially Star Wars. I’m going to graduate college soon and LEGO is definitely a luxury purchase for me now, especially in the past few years with skyrocketing prices all around. Let’s face it: for most people today LEGO is a premium luxury good. At the same time, though, we as consumers seem more willing than ever to throw a ridiculous amount of money at almost anything; we don’t even second guess ourselves. For the first time in years I spent close to $200 on LEGO to buy the Endor Speeder Chase and Emperor’s Throne Room set during the May 4th promo period. I love the Throne Room set for all the reasons Jang pointed out but I also came to same conclusion: it’s so frustrating that this set $100 and LEGO is getting away with it. It should be $80 MAX and that is still asking a lot for most people. I took a page out of Jang’s book and started getting into Gundam/Gunpla because it’s a great hobby and orders of magnitude more affordable. I’m sure I’m not the only LEGO refugee fleeing from these insane price increases, especially in North America. LEGO continues to price a lot of fans out of the hobby completely and it makes me sad. I’m glad that such a respected community member like Jang isn’t afraid to come out and say as much.

This is one of those sets like the 2021 Slave 1; at first glance does NOT look worth the price, but after building it, it's a bit more palatable. But I agree, $100 is pretty outrageous given what you get. $80 max would be fair to me, but I agree $60-70 would be a sweet spot.
Loved some of the building techniques for this set. Both this one and the Endor diorama were fun to build. Thanks for the review Jang! Awesome as always. 😁👍🏼

If this had been priced at $50, I would have easily bought this set. It's a beautiful display piece, but there are so many other sets in this price range that have better value and play features. One being the Galaxy Explorer set I just picked up over the weekend. The building experience, functionality, and nostalgia factor alone were well worth the $100 price tag.

    • @NMLE
      @NMLE Год назад +7

I disagreed. $99.99, yes feels expensive. $50 also feels like you're lowballing. Like Harawanagangsta said, Dried flower centerpiece is also $50, but that have no licensing fee nor minifigures, so having them priced the same, isn't right.
$75 - $80 should be the acceptable range.

  • @Lanosrep
    @Lanosrep Год назад +43

It does look nice and is a nice build. But this is the same price as the version which came out in 2020, which featured this segment, palpatine's tunnel, a bridge section, and the entrance with stairs. Not to mention an additional two minifigures. And that set was clean, practical, good for display AND play, and upon revisiting it for comparison I even heard you call it a diorama!
A nice set for sure, but at this price and in comparison it's a strange direction to start doing so many dioramas

I feel like Lego has been setting prices with 20% discount in mind. Rather than being able to get a resonably priced set at a bargain when it goes on sale, we now have to wait for the sale for the overpriced set to become reasonably priced, and bargains are seldom found anymore.

I am a Canadian viewer who appreciates your work. So I do find it rather upsetting that people would get that upset over a readily available conversion metric like that. However, I can empathize a little with their frustration of how poor the conversion to the American dollar is right now given that the Canadian dollar has been near equal with the American dollar as recently as like a decade ago.
When I was growing up, American and Canadian prices were rather consistent in the Lego world, so it's disappointing. But that's the state of two contrasting economies, not Jangs problem for stating the facts. So don't take that out on him.

The thing about Lego Stars is the models are very rarely bad. Most are very good actually.
But the sad thing is, nowadays you'll almost never find a full price star wars set that you feel GOOD about purchasing, one that actually deserves that tag.
Some people used to say there was a "star wars tax" and I didn't use to believe them.
    Now... they're probably right.

Sidenote on Canadian prices: It's true the difference is more or less the exchange rate but I think a lot of the emotions are due to Lego being plain impossible to collect for most Canadians. The economics just don't make sense...
    1. Average income is lower in Canada
    2. Average income tax is higher in Canada
    3. Average consumption tax is higher in Canada
    4. There is a 30% USD-CAD price premium
Honestly, I had to stop collecting this year. I am very fortunate to have a solid job but I can't justify paying so much on Lego.
Sad really, there are so many great sets coming out but I don't think I'm the only Canadian enthusiast who will never experience them.
    Anyway, great review Jang!

You definitely work hard! Two videos from you this morning alone! Thanks! You are right about the first day discounts, it's pot luck here in New Zealand, but if one of the big department stores happens to have a discount running across the Lego brand, you can get first day discounts, or maybe first week discounts fairly easily - for example I went into Farmers department store last week and all Lego was 15% off including all the new Star Wars sets - was really tempted to pick up the Tie Interceptor/Fang fighter, but I know if I wait one of the big stores will have 20% off some time in the next month or two.

I have to explain something about what you call a discount in Europe. In most (if not all) European countries, the price of a set is with tax included. Lego has besides their own stores some retailers in several countries, from which local toy stores can buy. Retailers can get their tax reduced, so local stores can get it a lot cheaper and are able to sell it for 15% less than lego can offer in their own stores. (Retailer get 20% off from Lego, and pays no tax, local store buys from retailer and pays no tax, so can offer lego at a lower price as official lego stores who get supplied by lego directly). This doesnt work always, because the retailers cant always deliver, but if they do, the most of the times are early and cheaper. Technicly it isnt a discount, but well who cares what it is called, it is cheaper and that is what matters. However true discounts are a bit rarer. Bigger chains of toystores have those and some big webshops. But most of the times those havent the newest sets after at least 2 weeks after the official release dates. That said, we europeans, or at least this crazy dutchman, is always looking jealous to those crazy garage sales where people sell their lego without knowing the value, but also to the crazy 50% off deals at stores like walmark or target. So sometimes the leftbankers of the puddle are lucky and sometimes the rightbankers are. And still we are all willing to pay gold for plastic. Ok I hope it is clear what I wrote, because when typing on my phone i cant hardly see what i typed so my english grammer probably is butchered.

I'd be willing to pay $10 for that throne and a couple figs by themselves. Very nice👌

    For me that's a 79€ set!
Yes, in US you pay less than for instance Europeans! That's 100€ for us... more than 100$! In stores you pay less but in the secundary market you pay insane prices! Makes no sense!
Thank You Sir. Great vid as usual.

I still can’t justify the 100 dollar price point for the throne room. The Indy diorama was 150 but you got play features, a light brick, 4 minifigs, 3 different sections with tons of detail. One of the best sets I’ve ever built. The throne room just sits there and it’s not very big. It’s a great looking set but 100 bucks is ludicrous. Also I really dislike Luke’s hair. It looks like a wad of silly putty on his head and it wasn’t that long in the movie

While this, and the other diorama sets too, looks great, I really wish Lego would just focus more on making more affordable and playable sets again. Right now there are just too many of higher cost sets out, especially when combined with the helmets too, and not enough lower priced options.

All this talk about inflation, Lego sets costing more than ever, yeah, it's frustrating, we want to be able to enjoy Lego without having to fork over all of our pays for a single set, I pointed out in another review that we Canadians seems to always get the short part of the stick because our prices seem way higher (but they are equivalent to US dollars), not gonna argue over this, Jang knows his stuff when it comes to prices and I won't dispute that. Still, logically, I'd really rather pay 100$ than 130$, or as you said, 60-70$ would certainly be way more acceptable for both countries. And I'm starting to wonder if the hobby itself is in jeopardy because of high prices like those, Lego should not just be for the rich, it should be for everyone (thank goodness for 10$ sets!) I hope I'm just being paranoid, because right now, things are not looking up. And it could hurt Lego in the long run just as much as the collectors, hope for the best, people. 🤞

The price defiantly isn't matching the scale of the set, I look at this and can't really imagine spending $100 and feeling good about it. For sure should of been maximum $75-80. I think LEGO's new Adult push is just banking on nostalgia and the set looking nice enough to justify Overpriced display sets to interested people.

true. The price of these diorama sets are pretty crazy. i hate those stands are like an extra 10-15 dollars onto the price. I built the set with parts i got from brick link (looks identical besides the window dish doesn’t have the printed detail). and instead of making the whole set i didn’t make the black stand and just bought the common version of each minifig. I did all of that in 50 dollars

This is my first year placing an order during the May 4th event. It took about 20 minutes of fighting the website to successfully place the order, starting right when the window opened at midnight.
For a little over a week now, my order status is "shipped," but the tracking says "Label Created, UPS waiting for item." Is this sort of delay in tracking updates expected, or should I contact Lego?

Just call CS and see. I got both of my orders placed on May 1. I received them May 5 and May 8. It isn't uncommon though to see a delay depending on when you ordered. LEGO has a lot of orders to fulfill from this promo period, so it could be in the warehouse still waiting for UPS pickup like it says.

In the UK this is £90 which is ridiculous, should be £80 with the conversion rate
