  • After a failed West End run at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in 2007, The Lord of the Rings has returned to the stage after 15 years. Now at the Watermill Theatre, a small regional venue in Newbury, has the show been given a new breath of life?

I got to see this production, and I feel lucky that I did. It was a really fun time and I think they did a really great job with it. Thanks for doing this review.

I saw the original in London and saw this version yesterday. I agree, a lot of thought went into this version and they did a very good job reworking it (I didn't mind the steampunk orcs, lol). There was a lot more talking in this version than the original and it was way more intimate feeling. I'd say, this version worked best in the more folksy settings of Act 1, but maybe was a bit too rushed in Act 2, though they did the best they could with the space. I adored the music of the London original version and, honestly, I didn't entirely like how the songs were cut down to the bone instrumentally, or how the lyrics were changed here and there - they really lost a bit of the power that left me breathless and totally obsessed with the soundtrack following the London production. But I will give major props to the actors as the singing in this version was actually often superior. Truthfully, nothing can possibly beat the spectacle of the original, that was lightning in a bottle, but the Watermill version was wonderful in its own right and I would recommend it to anyone.

Thanks for the review. I'm not in England so I've been living vicariously through reviews of this show. Glad to hear that it's getting a positive reaction and that this company has solved a lot of the issues from the original production.
FYI, the "Golden Elves" are called the Galadhrim or the Elves of Lothlorien.

I wish they would stage or film a production for US release. I have the original album but would love to really see it.

I saw the original but far preferred this. I agree with most of the comments with the exception of Gandalf, he came across as weak to me, not thoughtful. Gandalf is a powerful wizard and this just did not come across. Gollum, however, was my highlight. So, so clever.

I saw the original. Tbh I don’t remember much about it other than the effects were amazing (for its day) and it was cleverly done. I also have a memory of it feeling long, but after all this time I could be wrong. Enjoyed your review..

I am making this comment early in the video just the say. So I don’t know if you address it yet
The Peter Jackson movies really didn’t need to be as long as they were.
The original animated movies combined probably were only around three hours, and may tell the bulk of the story in a condensed format, where you don’t feel like you really miss anything important
While the Jackson movies add a bunch of stuff just for fluff and then try to make that fluff important

As a LOTR fan, I have to say you basically go name by name through the best characters in the books when talking about the actors. Whether or not the play is great, the characters really are.
Really wish I lived in England to be able to see this. I have all sorts of ideas of how to immerse the audience in battle scenes, too.

I was more of a Harry Potter fan than an LOTR fan but this musical sounds interesting and intriguing.
