  • After being disappointed with other musical film adaptations recently, Matilda the Musical starring Emma Thompson, Lashana Lynch and Alisha Weir feels like a breath of fresh air. But why? Why does this film work so well where others didn't? Today, I share my full thoughts.

Have you seen Matilda? Let me know all of your thoughts! It's so nice to see a musical film double my love for the original show.

The fact that the creative team of this widely successful stage musical has also worked on the movie adaptation, really does speak VOLUME, if you are gonna do a movie adaptation of a Broadway/West End Musical.. for the love of god please include the people who brought it to life in the first place.

I agree! It feels like they are real stewards/caretakers of the stage show and I think more adaptations would thrive from having original creatives work on both

Also can hurt if they don’t understand film. Like Producers was directed both on stage and on film by Susan Stroman. On stage it’s a hilarious big glitzy musical loved by everyone who saw it. The movie… is flat. It literally uses same jokes, style of costumes, similar if not exact same choreography, same blocking, same everything. And it does not work. She clearly doesn’t understand what works on film despite doing a spectacular job on stage.
That said, everyone from Matilda knew what and how to change things. As said in this video haha. But just because you bring in people from the show, it doesn’t mean they will be able to handle or understand. You need someone who knows film but ALSO has that love for the original stage material.

Matilda is absolutely my favourite musical to movie adaptation out of all the ones I've seen! Loved hearing your thoughts on it!

I just finished it. That was a total blast; loved it! The whimsical and surrealist aesthetics really worked for me. I do have to admit though that I've never even seen the original (the 90s one) 😄 But hoping to watch that tomorrow night and see how it compares!

I don't think this film is quite as good as Chicago, but second best musical adaptation ever is still quite the achievement.
Regardless, this was my most anticipated film of the year and to see it succeed with such flying colours was phenomenal.

I liked how lavender owned the newt,I liked the final spelling test scene,I enjoyed the transition between what would have been act 1 and 2,I disliked how Hortensia was the red beret girl and how they only gave roles of: Bruce,Amanda,Nigel,Eric and Hortensia out cus then there’s no recognition of Alice or Tommy and I would have preferred for Hortensia to be in the actual class rather than a prefect or something

Also I found it so weird because after smell of rebellion and quiet when Miss Trunchbull is gone I swear miss honey said to go back to class yet she goes and takes matilda to her home

Alice and Tommy in the stage version are really just to make up the numbers in the class. Whereas in the film there are lots of classmates so they don’t need to be there as named characters.
In the book Hortensia is older.
If you notice the rain has stopped completely when she says back to class, up to “how would you like a nice cup of tea” and is pouring when they go to the house, so I would assume this is later in the day after the class they went back to.

I’m going to be honest, I think this movie was better than the stage version. No shade to the stage production, but the movie feels more focused and gets its point across more clearly while maintaining the fun. Also, I’m glad they cut “Tele”; that song just annoys me for some reason.

I can rarely find any reason to disagree with you Ellie; and this is no exception. I can't express it as well as you manage to but I love this film so much!

@EllieTalksTheatre I don't understand why the keep adapting these awful musicals when they could do a great musical like 'Miss Saigon' or 'Sunset Blvd' In my opinion there r only 3 musical film adaptions that r better than the stage productions 'The Sound of Music' 'Oliver' & 'My Fair Lady'x
