And he also knows that despite all that, he understands that what John is about to do is inevitable nonetheless, and that it will be a shame, because it means John will no longer be welcome at the hotel, and will eventually be persona-non-grata.
Winston: "Jonathan, just walk away." Santino: "Yeah Jonathan, walk awa-" *gets shot* ... Winston: "What have you done?" Santino's corpse: "Yeah Jonathan, what have you do-" *gets shot again*
It's like Charon knew what he was going to do. Even told him where Santino was without questioning. Didn't bother to stop him for a couple of reasons. Clearly, there's no stopping John at this point. And, Charon is a real homie. Always had his back, even in the final moments of Chapter 3 where they both destroyed those armored dudes together
That smug look on Santino's face, with his mouth full of pomme frites, watching John end that man was probably the most satisfying antagonist death in a film for me.
Have you ever known what fired tongue tastes like. Beef That’s a reference to boss level where the Mc had a bullet go through his tongue and it fried it
I just realized that Charon the concierge at the Continental Hotel, really didn't want to tell John where Santino was but, had to in order to stay neutral. He knew what John would do.
Ezekiel Wooten Great comment - Just from his facial expressions alone, you could tell that he knew he had to make a split second decision (and that snake sitting near the bar, having an awesome meal, wasn't worth his own life).
The thing is Charon and Winston are good friends with John so they would break any rules for him but Winston probably couldn't break the ex comunicado rule
I love how Santino’s hubris was his downfall. Getting John to honor the Marker even though he knew John wanted nothing less gave him a false sense of confidence that John would also never break the Continental’s rule as well. He failed to understand that there is one thing John cares even more about at this point in his life than honoring the code of the assassin, and that’s payback. The Continental was never a refuge for Santino: it was a trap created by his own misplaced confidence, a trap John gladly took advantage of like the calculated killer he is. Seeing John cut off that snarky comment of someone hiding in their supposed privilege made for a very satisfying conclusion.
Hubris is the downfall of every single boss that John kills in this series. They always think that their accumulated power and the rules will protect them, and John comes in showing them that they are all still men who are just as easily killed by lead as anyone else. Viggo's son thought that his father's power made him invincible. John quickly shows up that he's wrong. Viggo knows John's reputation and capabilities, but still thinks that his gang gives him power over him. John proves him otherwise. Santino thinks that the rules of the Underworld and the Continental protect him. They don't, not when John doesn't care about the rules anymore. Only thing is, I wish the Adjudicator and the High Table got their comeuppance as well. I wish John could have shown them that despite how high and might and even godlike they appear to be to the Underworld players, that they are also just men. They may all appear to be gods of this world, but they are still just men who follow rules.
@ShadeSlayer1911 love the breakdown and analysis you wrote! Hope you got to check out John wick 4 if haven't had the chance! Gives us a lot to chew on in terms of lore and of course tons of awesome action!
@@Richard-Espanol yep, saw it on release day. It was fantastic. And it's just another example of a man with hubris who thought that the rules made him a God. I also love the character of Mr. Nobody. He was just great. He acts as a sort of outsider to the underworld, and that's something that this series needed. I'm glad we got it. Lesson of the series for me: leave John wick alone.
@@ShadeSlayer1911 yes! Didn't want to spoil it for you just in case but you summed it up perfectly! Everyone at the high table is so arrogant and thinks they're untouchable until John is staring back at them. It was so satisfying seeing that arrogant a-hole being be killed thinking he never had to get in his hands dirty. He only talked big when he thought had all the cards. Mr. Nobody was a very awesome addition to the JW universe! I'd love to see the new characters get some more spotlight in spin offs. Mr. Nobody got to see the last moments of a legend. Not to mention he took John on and lost but was spared. He definitely has his own motivations and kind of like you said made a very fun and interesting addition to the story.
@@ShadeSlayer1911 also totally agree on just leaving John wick alone lol. John gave Santino a chance to but we all know how that went. Because these are people who live in the highest of societies and order murders like they're picking out groceries. It's only when John shows up at their door do they realize that they're not untouchable.
Keanu's acting is so great in this movie. You just can't help but feel sorry for John despite who he is. This scene is perfect example, John is so sick of this, he just can't handle anymore and kills him out of pure rage. He doesn't care if he dies, he just says - "Finished it".
Bruce Snow his acting is actually pretty bad lol, do you not hear the way he delivers his lines? Still amazing films and he does a great job regardless
The unfortunate part is if Santino had just kept his mouth shut and not provoked John by echoing Winston’s warning about walking away, word for word, he probably might’ve lived.
Santino thinks that he is untouchable as long as he is within the walls of the Continental Hotel. He thinks that no one will not dare to break the rules or risk hunted down by the High Table. I think John Wick will kill him regardless as Santino can still ordering hits on John Wick within the confines of the Continental Hotel. So he decides to break the rule and risk being hunted down.
The entire point is that Santino is a sleazy little worm with absolutely no honor compared to his sister and her crowd. Gianna knew why John had come and chose to go out on her own terms. Cassian understood why John did what he did and held his own code of honor too. Santino was a man greedy for power and really thought he understood John. He failed. You know the line "Don't bite the hand that feeds you?" He should have heeded the opposite. "Don't strike the hound that hunts for you."
I like how he doesn't torture or interrogate his enemies but just kills them with one bullet making the death as quick as possible. It shows that he really doesn't care about them, and also lives up to his name as the bogeyman.
I love the little detail of showing John Wick abandoning trigger discipline, holding the pistol with finger on trigger while he waddles towards Santino in disgust. Just shows how over it he is in the moment.
The guy burnt John's house, most importantly photos of John and Helen down to ashes, made John killed his friend, dare to call John by Jonathan and really, really got the nerve to tell the world's greatest assassin to walk away. That shot was terrifying and satisfying at the same time.
Just in this context means exclusively do what I’m specifying you to do. So by saying just walk away he is saying I want you to walk away and do nothing else. By shooting he disobeyed Winston. I don’t even know why you’re trying to twist it up otherwise lol
In the first Movie, Perkins willing to break Continental Rules over 4 Million USD to kill John Wick. Now John has 7 Million Bounty because of Santino, John is forced to break the rules because not even in Continental can guarantee his safety at this point.
Charon is probably the only person in the building who knew that John was gonna cap Santino. That blank face says it all lol. Even Winston didn't think he was gonna do it.
At first his face says “You’re gonna do this no matter what, so no point in warning you, right?” After John walks away, his face is practically screaming “I am NOT looking forward to what’s coming next.”
I love how the front desk guy has so much respect towards John to hold back whatever he was going to say, and just understands when the man sets out to do something, hes gonna do it.
@@EpicGamer-sg8uv Considering JW has the ability to not only kill everyone in said hotel including the head man following up with topple the entire assassin foundation and table maybe it's a good idea to just let the man go, especially when he just wants to be left alone.
i love that during the whole scene, Winston was trying to stop John from killing him, because i think he really apreciated John, at least enough to not want to have to excommunicad him. If it were anyone else, i don't thing he'll have acted the way he did, more like warning that person in a more professional way, and then acting accodingly insted of looking shocked and say "...what have you done?". I mean... in the first movie, he killed that women who broke the rules like it was nothing, while with John all was shock and regret.
fcastrotero another reason why winston warned john and reacted shocked: winston knew that killing john is not easy and many will die and that harms the business, and that john now has no longer s reason not to kill on Continental ground
Well, yeah. It was clear from the previous movie that they have a much deeper history than many of the other assassins, and Winston knows that John has never really been the "bad guy" in these conflicts. He sees John as just a guy who's been fighting for his freedom, yet keeps getting pulled back into the darkness unwillingly.
"What have you done?" That there wasn't a tone of surprise that he broke continental rule. Everyone knowns at what length John will take things. That was a note of dread. It was knowing John had just forsaken all that he had built for them and that he has the sheer will power to tear it all down.....and there isnt a soul alive that can stop him. With that 1 shot John re-wrote everyones fate.
@@Knuspermonster I mean, yes - possibly. The issue is: bo one likes to share. Everyone wants that confidence- that hubris- that they're the one assassin who took down BabaYaga - the Legendary John Wick. If an entire group of assassins came together, in John's state, he may have died. But they attacked in no more than groups of three, and even with a twisted ankle, he survived.
Keanu can capture a scene without saying much at all if anything Silences during tense scenes are difficult to act out to grip the audience. Keanu is becoming a really good and understated actor. I would like to see him play a gritty detective or cowboy in a western. Cast in maybe a tarantino movie

Notice how the gun John uses to kill him was Ares's gun, but Ares had a suppressor on her gun. He deliberately took it off because there was literally no point in silencing the shot, it served more as a message that John didn't care anymore.

People feel sorry for John because it's easy to sympathize with him. It's true he's a ruthless trained killer but we've also seen he's a good guy when he's not working. Not to mention, it's really hard not to feel bad for a guy who lost his wife and his dog was murdered. It's clear the makers of the movie never intended for John to be a "hero", he's just the guy we root for because he's generally taking out people far worse than himself. He and the other assassin's don't kill innocent people as well giving them a form of honor to their order.
@@naruchiha21 Hm, I always thought of John Wick as the worst of them all. Of course killing a dog and stealing a car is pretty bad thing to do, but going over so many dead bodies just to get revenge makes him a little worse than all those other assassins I think
I love that question, "what have you done?" Its not like hes never dealt with people killing on continental grounds. But the acknowledgment in his voice of the hell he is bringing down upon himself and him when his FRIEND does it... just awesome!
I have a feeling that John's allies in part 3 will be Common, John Leguizamo, Lawrence Fishburne, the concierge from the Continental, and a new character, hopefully played by Hugo Weaving or Carrie Ann Moss.
Cloud Kurosaki Allies? He's not going to have any Allies. The continental is about as big a business you can get. He may get a helping hand here or there that he will have to pay for, but for the most part the entire world's assassins are out to kill Wick for the bounty. Nobody is going to put themselves in the middle of that lol.
iWant myPrivacy I wouldn't be surprised if what happens is, Wick has to use his smarts and manipulate factions against each other. I'll bet some of those assassins coming for him would probably be more interested in killing each other than they would him, or at least wouldn't be in the mood to share the bounty.
Rohit Jain Are you referring to Addy the barmaid? From what we see of her in the first movie, she clearly has a thing for John. If she shows up in Chapter 3, I think its plausible she would care more about him than the rules.
Cool thing is he entered the scene with his finger still on the trigger. Showing he had zero intentions of letting him live, even if they were inside the Continental.
1:43 He used the last bullet in the clip to kill Santino, giving "Finished it." a deeper touch than just referring to the job. I love the subtle details of this franchise.
Also makes me wonder if it was intentional. None of the other (highly skilled) assassins were as likely to consider him a threat when they see his pistol is empty. It's shown in the first film that many of them still stay armed on hotel grounds, they just can't "work" on them.
I always find it heartbreaking when the concierge tells John where to find Santino. He knows whats about to happen and that there id no stopping it. Hands down a masterpiece of an ending
He did warn you don't do this yet you blow up his house. And yet you try to kill him after he finish his task and even put a bounty worth 7 million. What do think he's gonna do?

Great comment - Just from his facial expressions alone, you could tell that he knew he had to make a split second decision (and that snake sitting near the bar, having an awesome meal, wasn't worth his own life).
Wonderful observation. I went back and watched the clip again just to see what I had missed . Regret was there clear as day. Good job!
He had 2 choices: save John's life or save his own life, he made the wise decision to save his own
The thing is Charon and Winston are good friends with John so they would break any rules for him but Winston probably couldn't break the ex comunicado rule
"Don't strike the hound that hunts for you."
well he never got to finish so-
Plus Santino would've found himself with the liberty to double the bounty repeatedly on John's head if he stayed in the Continental.

Why would the lady concierge be his ally?

Also makes me wonder if it was intentional. None of the other (highly skilled) assassins were as likely to consider him a threat when they see his pistol is empty. It's shown in the first film that many of them still stay armed on hotel grounds, they just can't "work" on them.
