    Something I like about your videos is that your voice is very defined. RUclipsrs who "make it big" and hire researchers, writers, editors, etc start to sound like talking heads.

    I’ve always thought of hiring an editor as making a rough sketch on a canvas and then handing someone else all the brushes and paints to finish the piece.
    That’s where the video is actually made! Definitely don’t hand that off too early (or ever).
    I’m happy to say this on an SM7B while wearing a jacket if it adds credibility.

    Mans is spitting nothing but facts. I started a RUclips channel because I wanted to be a "RUclipsr." But then I just fell in love with the process of making videos and stopped caring about the platform's definition of success.
    I'm always perplexed when creators who used to edit their content talk about hiring an editor. Because editing is such an ingrained part of the process to me. I friggin love editing.

    It's been 8 years since I've uploaded on my channel, the last couple years I've had plenty of time to do it but I felt paralyzed all the time. I'm in the process of making one right now. The one thing I'm struggling with is delivering to camera, trying to be enthusiastic about something that I'm very passionate about. I feel so un-natural talking from a script but it's the only way to stop myself talking gibberish lol. Thanks for the encouragement! I'm trying! Gonna try reshoot in a couple days now I've had some practice :)

    Its funny i found this today scott. I gained 100 subs all of last year...... which i thought was sick. We at one point were getting 1 sub per video on average. After awhile it changed and we got 100 videos ahead of our subs. Now, in this month alone we gained as many as we did all of last year! I know 500 isnt a massive milestone but it sure feels like it. Now ill be hiring somebody to shave my legs, do my thumbnails, wash my cat, and edit. Thanks for the advice!

  • @ZachyH
    @ZachyH 2 дня назад +1

    Thank you Scott. I needed this. I think the hardest part for me is staying consistent. I'm trying to do what I can to make the videos that I want, but it can be so disheartening getting a couple thousand views on a video, getting a lot of great feedback, feeling super motivated to make another, then watching that video not even break 100 views. It completely stops my creative momentum. I will continue to make the videos that I want to make, but there's always something in the back of my head telling me it's all for nothing. I love the process regardless of how many views I get, but there's such a huge connection in my brain with how good a video is with how many views it gets. So then I feel like I did a bad job, even though when I clicked that publish button I knew I made something I was proud of. So when a video doesn't do well, I almost feel embarrassed that I tried so hard for "failure." I know there are so many great videos on this platform waiting to be discovered, and I wish I could give credit to all the people who make great content that don't get the exposure for all the hard work they put in. I guess all you can do is keep making stuff regardless. But I'm happy for you Scott, I've been a fan for a while now and I've seen you grow quite a bit. You're one of my biggest inspirations for sure and proof that a slow burn can pay off. Keep it up!

    ik he won’t see this but i’ve been meaning to comment it for a while: finding scott’s channel last year was one of the best things that happened to me. i was getting tired of youtube cause every video seemed so pessimistic. i LOVE commentary youtubers, but 99% of their videos was just complaining and making fun of people who, in a lot of times, did not deserved it. and complaining can be a lot of fun, but it was starting to wheigh a lot on me. and then i found his channel, and it was so different from what i used to see. most of his videos are about topics i’d never think about, but he seems so passionate or happy about them, i end up getting just as excited! i’ll never forget the video he made showing pieces of art that were in roads near where he lives, and he truly saw beauty in it, it didn’t matter how small or simple it was. same thing whit the buffalo thing. ik it’s simple, but it does make me appreciate more the place where i live, try to find things i take for granted and enjoy them. he’s so optimistic, it makes me want to be too! i love your videos scott, they make me happy and i love seeing you discuss the breakfasts they serve on the most random movies and i love how excited you are about it!! i wish you and your family all the happiness in the world (sorry for any mistakes lol im from brazil so english is not my first language, but i tried)

But I just need to do it. I need to get out of my own way and just upload things because no one is expecting anything of me. I don’t have an upload schedule and I don’t have a lot of subscribers so there’s no pressure. Great video Scott. I was writing a script the other night, more to put into the style of a graphic visual overview handbook video, but I restarted my computer and didn’t realize the document didn’t save. So all I have left of the formatting was 2/3 of the text itself, and a screenshot I was showing to a friend. Realizing it might be time to put a face to my work, so I’m going to rebuild it and do a couch talk video instead with the inclusion of the overview.

    I’m so glad you called out the “I don’t have time/my job takes all my time and energy” excuse. Like you said, that is not actually true for 90% of people who say it. They just like the idea of being creative more than the actual process, and to resolve that cognitive dissonance in their head they choose to blame their inaction on something other than themselves, instead of resolving it by actually doing anything. The circumstances in which art is made aren’t ever perfect. The thing about creative work is that it is still work. It’s usually not glamorous and is sometimes tedious. But it should be something that is restorative.

    • @WinterWind
      @WinterWind 4 дня назад +1

      Also even in these comments people are missing the point. So many whiners who are like oh my circumstances are blah blah blah. Like yeah, stop talking about why you can't do it and instead just get on with it. I used to be in a creative writing group and consistently there were people who liked the idea of calling themselves an author or writer without any actual work to back themselves up.
      It's ok to not do something but they should shut up about how they totally could do it if they didn't have x, y z excuse etc.

    It's so uplifting to see someone successful encourage others to learn how to do all the parts of what they want to do and to find fulfillment even in the more tedious parts of the job that force you to learn new skills. The joy of self-sufficiency, particularly when it requires teaching yourself to do difficult, un-glamorous tasks is a joy that far too many people miss out on. You're like the anti-guru and it's so refreshing.

    As someone who has wanted to create online content for many, many years, I really appreciate this. My situation is more rare: I’m disabled and suffer from numerous chronic illnesses and pain, along with depression and ADD. I have crawled my way to the meager place I’m in. Learning editing and design in the background. I know this will reward me in the future.

    Hey Scott! Thanks for the advice! I was a RUclipsr for about 8 years in a community until that community kinda died out. So I hit a mini restart on my channel and tried following a more general scope when it came to my passions with content creation and gaming. And while it's been great for getting views and subscribers and I've been a lot happier with my content, it's been a lot tougher to feel like there's actually a community there. So I appreciate your story of sticking to it for so long and just doing what you love and growing a community that way. I hope that somewhere along the way I can grow a community doing what I do too 💙 THANK YOU!
    p.s. I've always edited my own stuff (With Sony Vegas just like you). I feel like your RUclipsr identity is tied to your editing style and it's important to keep that.

    I hired a friend to help me with editing after I hit around 6k subs and was just tired of that part of the process, but theres no reason anyone that wants to start making videos even needs to think about that. So many editing softwares are free (or signifigantly less expensive than an editor) and easy to learn. Some of my favorite jokes come from editing. I'm lucky I trust my editors sense of humor but I cant imagine handing my stuff off to some random person to chop it up.
    And thank you for addressing thaty dopamine rush people chase. You're never gonna have all your uploads be as successful as each other, there ill be peaks and valleys, as long as yuou make content you are passionate about, it'll balance out and you'll stay on it because of the joy, not the numbers.

    I did some gameplay videos a few years ago. I knew I was not going to be big, I just used it as an excuse to learn how to edit. And it works! It was fun, I just stopped because my PC was kinda weak and had problems recording, so it became a nuisance rather than a thing I did for fun. But I completely agree, go out there and do some videos! They will not be good at first, but you will notice your self improvement and that, per se, is a hell of a reward!

    The one thing I keep running into is "Do I really want to do it?" I look at or hear about things and think "That would make a good RUclips video".(I even have a long list of ideas) Until I get to a point in the script writing process after a while where I'm just like, man, I don't really want to do this right now, I'll come back to it later. Then never do. There is a point at the beginning where it seems fun, but just end up dropping it. I guess the main issue is wondering whether I'm lazy or I just genuinely don't want to do this. I do want to make SOMETHING but going from an idea to a video has so many steps (Research, Script, Record, Edit, etc.) and so many second guesses that if you find any one of those things loathsome, it can become an absolute chore. Awesome video.

    Very good advice Scott! I slowly came to the realization that need to edit my own vids when I couldn't pay anyone... honestly its very satisfying to learn by myself! its like gaining a superpower!

    Videos like this are way your one of my favourite RUclipsrs on here. Inspiring and encouraging and great advice.
    Agree with the advice about editors too. I’ve known a couple of RUclipsrs that got to a stage where they get an editor, hate to say it but you see the difference in their content too. Now, one in particular, I’d never chatty anymore, his works suffered, yes he’s getting more views now, but he seems to just be chasing the algorithm and his videos just feel like cookie cutter same as everyone else. I wish he would go back to how he was and actually feel like he’s running the channel, not some editor.

    5:50 exactly! I watch a channel that was so good. Then they tried to go up on production value (where it looked too polished, to produced) and it stopped being fun.
    Then they just put out a series like their originals and the response was overwhelmingly positive saying THIS IS WHAT WE LIKE! We don’t want it the other way. It’s not real.

    Tomorrow is my 29th birthday, I woke up today feeling depressed and wondered if dreams could still be achieved even if you get older, or if it's all just gone to waste now. So, thanks for this upload. I Might not want to be a successful RUclipsr but I still applied your advice to other aspects 😄

    I need to show my son this video. He always talks about wanting to be a RUclipsr, but it seems he just wants to focus on the fun part rather than the fundamentals like knowing how to even upload or title a video. Obviously I want to help him, but it's those first steps that tell a lot. My daughter? Exact opposite. She wanted to learn how to do it, and by jove if anyone was gonna stop her from figuring it out. I think more RUclipsrs need to be like Scott and preach those fundamentals

      Praise your daughter and tell your son to stop giving updates until there's a real update. Maybe the competition will make him do something, maybe not. Either way your daughter is a total champ 🤩
