greg!!! my ram usable and hardware reserve issue that eats 8gb of ram out of 16gb ram. How to fix this. properly pls I change rams. msconfig trick. plss
wow I've actually learned something new. I didn't know a memory channel on cpu was bad. I've dealt with bad ram slots on mobo thinking its mobo problem so I'd just put ram in other slots where it would post.
That poll is kind of odd. I'd hate to see either series go away. It's a coin toss which is better. Isn't that the third CPU "failure" in a row for three different reasons? Quite a coinkydink.
I have a relative thats too scared to troubleshoot their system and wants to pay for a technician to that for them, even though their an IT and im willing to that for them ahahaha its so funny that the problem is just that the 4 pin connector is not connected properly
My favorite thing about this series is learning something new. I'm pretty good at troubleshooting and I don't think I would have thought of that solution. Now it's going in my toolbox of go to solutions forever.
Yeah this dude has added so many new ways for me to diagnose something but this is something i literally never would have thought of. I would have just swamped the CPU and that would have been the end of it
I have a PC with the same problem... channel B dead. I'm still using it in single channel mode. I was just too lazy to replace it on warranty when I just brought it. Right now it's just working as a media center/HTPC.
It's very simple.. nothing to be scared of.. Just follow the how to build videos from one of these yt-ers. I've done it alot of times . these days I just lay everything on the desk and just get it done in an hour (most of the one hour is spent cleaning up the packagings and tidying up the cables.. the actual components takes just a handful of minutes to put together)
this one was a curveball for sure...I did NOT expect a memory controller issue with the CPU...but this video was valuable in the troubleshooting toolbox.
*Congratulations for your upcoming PC !!* *Keep this things in mind :* Check Compatibility of your components before you buy, Make a recording of the package unboxing, Incase if you receive any damaged components then you can show that you didn't did anything, Carefully choose your components, don't over spend on features you don't need, Buy good quality PSU choose reputed brand, Buy good quality thermal paste, Always Be careful with BIOS updating read everything mentioned about it on manufacturer website carefully, Take a look at reviews of the components you selected on various websites, Take a look at Manual (gives you more information about the product), After successful build : keep proper bills and boxes, manuals,CPU socket cover (Intel motherboard has this, a plastic cover given to protect socket pins), accessories etc. This will help you if you ever need to replace any under warranty components.
super easy, imo the real challenge building a pc are: 1: Applying enough thermal phaste, i myself use pleny so i know the sink and cpu have maximum connection. 2: Cable management. Making it look nice, in the case its bit easier, the back is worse (lyckily you wont see that once u connected everything)
Your last episode made me realize the problem I had with my PC wasn't the CPU, and it ended up being a damaged trace on the mobo that made the system bootloop if there was RAM in dual channel. Crazy how similar this video is to that problem now.

This has become my favorite PC-centric channel on YT. Others seem to focus on out of reach systems or take a "look what I got" , nearly showing off approach that seems out of touch with the market and viewership. Good on you Mr. Salazar. You're the real MVP
It's great to see that weird stuff like this happens. You never know when it will be you who runs into this issue. I would had never thought to try the memory channels separately. Now, at least I've seen a computer break like this, and I will think about testing with only 1 memory stick, and test that stick in different slots.

Definitely enjoyed this one, while learning something along the way. Never in my 26 years of IT-related troubleshooting have I come across a CPU with a dead memory channel. Dead CPUs , sure, but one with a single dead channel? You sir have given me yet one more troubleshooting step to add to my repertoire.

True that, I had a cpu that would post but would die in the lock screen in Windows, uninstalled, tried to reinstall, would fail upon restarting, would also fail with other OSes, swapped the board, still fucked, swapped the cpu, ...fine? It's one thing to have a dead CPU or some dead channels but a partially functioning CPU is just weird man

I live in south Florida and I've been fixing my friends and family's computers for a long time now and watching your videos delights me to no end because you have a spare part ready to go for testing every time and your troubleshooting process is so similar to mine so watching these videos is like * chefs kiss*. I have to order and wait for parts just to trouble shoot. Theres only been one PC in about 10 years i havent fixed and its either the motherboard or processor but not only do i not have the EQ or much money to spare for parts to TS with, but i don't even have a proper workbench in my house to work comfortably with since i have a son now. keep up the amazing content!

When I first started in Computers an experienced IT guy told me the first thing you should always try because it causes more issues than most and is the easiest thing to check is to CHECK RAM FIRST. Always try each memory module first down to 1 channel then try 2 if that works. Saves more time than you can imagine.
THIS. It's outstanding what just... Reseating the ram can do. If that doesn't work, move to testing individual dimms and slots. It's my go to whenever I start troubleshooting a nopost

Yesterday my pc was not showing any display output after I upgraded to windows 11 and went to bios to turn on secure boot as I am u r proud viewer I knew exactly what to troubleshoot I cleared cmos and tried booting (it didnt) then I disconnected my gpu and booted with my intel Igpu it worked and reverted all settings and fixed my pc by myself honestly it was like a surgery for me being owning a pc for the first time and not knowing much about computer stuff

For a CPU going bad being rare, this is happening for a 2nd time recently in this playlist. Memory controllers on CPUs are finicky in general, I've had my first CPU slowly die because of a bad memory controller that will randomly blue screen the system and throw up memory errors. That was a nightmare to diagnose between the RAM itself, the CPU and the motherboard, especially because I didn't have spare parts to try.

And that is probably the exact reasons why this issue is over represented in the playlist. People can figure out by themselves when it's something simple like RAM or GPU that's the issue, but in the rare cases where the CPU isn't working properly you can't really find the problem unless you sit on a lot of spare parts.

WOW well done on this one, this would have boggled my mind, the fact you happened to have the working channel to start with and still figured this out is very impressive.
that sucks! & it's not a small FPS drop it's a pretty significant drop when you only run single channel on a ryzen CPU. i've seen it tested and in some games you lose a lot of performance because of the single channel instead of dual channel.
for me, back when I had my i5 8400 a few years ago, I didn't know much about PC hardware back then, and only got 1 stick of memory (only 2400mhz at that) and any demanding game had significant stuttering and much lower frame rate than what I would've expected. I didn't notice a problem when I still had my GTX 960 2gb, but when I got my GTX 1080, thats when the difference starts to show. I got a second identical stick of memory and the problem was solved :) I would probably use this faulty 3600 in a day-to-day work PC/office PC, pop in a cheap GPU and sell it at a discounted price (due to the faulty memory channel). still a perfectly usable CPU, but I wouldn't use it in a gaming PC.

could be some crud on a pin I got a ryzen cpu deemed broken by a customer, sat there meticulously cleaned the pins and it worked perfectly fine afterwards

I would never have come across the Dead memory channel, I would have probably assumed that the entire CPU is dead. Thanks to you i can also help many of my friends if they have problems. Before that, I was also able to build / assemble PCs, but that there are so many different aspects in the area of trubble shootiung amazes me every time with every video in the playlist. actually usually what causes a cpu to loose a channel of memory is memory being plugged in with out discharging the board and then trying to insert the memory, causing a short .. been my experience of that happening.
It's super important when taking out a pc for cleaning or anything else to always power it off. Press the power button multiple times after it's been unplugged and just simply wait 2-3mins for any lil current that could still be flowing. Its usually what causes motherboards and other delicate parts to fry.
@@Lonzology that is what i usually do, weather cleaning moving parts around or changing parts, i find on motherboards with a light, if you press and hold power button down, after turning off the power supply the light will go out. basically suck the power supply dry. lol

I've been watching the Fix or Flop series since episode one, and it's teaching me quite a bit about troubleshooting PC problems. That long delay where the fans are off, during your first power-on attempt: that's mostly memory timing training. I believe it precedes POST, which is why there weren't any beeps from the speaker. You'll very rarely encounter this outside of memory overclocking, but it's a symptom to keep at the back of your mind.
Glad I found your channel really enjoy watching your show . Str8 to the point no messing around ......as soon as I get a GPU I can start my build confident if I run in to a problem I will be able to solve it after watching lost if your repairs
Thank you for posting this video. I have what appears to be a similar problem in a build with a 1700x and have something new to try for troubleshooting. I would have NEVER considered a memory channel failure in the CPU. Great video.
After swapping the 1700X for a 1600, everything seems to now be working fine. I'll test the 1700X in another board to make sure, but I never would have considered only part of a CPU failing. Thanks again for the video.

absolutely love watching your videos!! being a first time pc builder, i find your videos like these very educational to where I can self diagnose if need be!! i did end up figuring out that i needed to bios flash my board to work with my 5600x cpu. which was not fun at first but then i realised that the usb flash drive i was using, did not allow me to do FAT32. swapped it out and fixed my issue!!! thank you for posting these kinds of videos!!!!

At 4:31 when you turn it on the vrm cover sparks and again at 4:44 when you turn it off.

I ran across an identical issue, however the 3500X I had issues with, would only work with 1 dimm regardless of the slot.

@@wsketchy sounds like you may have been able to get it working by increasing the voltage. This typically only happens in very old cpus though.

Memory controllers on CPUs are finicky in general, I've had my first CPU slowly die because of a bad memory controller that will randomly blue screen the system and throw up memory errors. That was a nightmare to diagnose between the RAM itself, the CPU and the motherboard, especially because I didn't have spare parts to try.

And that is probably the exact reasons why this issue is over represented in the playlist.
People can figure out by themselves when it's something simple like RAM or GPU that's the issue, but in the rare cases where the CPU isn't working properly you can't really find the problem unless you sit on a lot of spare parts.

WOW well done on this one, this would have boggled my mind, the fact you happened to have the working channel to start with and still figured this out is very impressive.
that sucks! & it's not a small FPS drop it's a pretty significant drop when you only run single channel on a ryzen CPU. i've seen it tested and in some games you lose a lot of performance because of the single channel instead of dual channel.
I also tested this on my ryzen 3600 but i actually didn't see any Fps drop in triple A titles
Better a large fps drop than 0 fps.
for me, back when I had my i5 8400 a few years ago, I didn't know much about PC hardware back then, and only got 1 stick of memory (only 2400mhz at that) and any demanding game had significant stuttering and much lower frame rate than what I would've expected. I didn't notice a problem when I still had my GTX 960 2gb, but when I got my GTX 1080, thats when the difference starts to show. I got a second identical stick of memory and the problem was solved :)
I would probably use this faulty 3600 in a day-to-day work PC/office PC, pop in a cheap GPU and sell it at a discounted price (due to the faulty memory channel). still a perfectly usable CPU, but I wouldn't use it in a gaming PC.

could be some crud on a pin I got a ryzen cpu deemed broken by a customer, sat there meticulously cleaned the pins and it worked perfectly fine afterwards
We checked both pins and socket.

I would never have come across the Dead memory channel, I would have probably assumed that the entire CPU is dead.

Before your playlist, I had little idea about Trubble Shootin. Before that, I was also able to build / assemble PCs, but that there are so many different aspects in the area of trubble shootiung amazes me every time with every video in the playlist.

actually usually what causes a cpu to loose a channel of memory is memory being plugged in with out discharging the board and then trying to insert the memory, causing a short .. been my experience of that happening.
It's super important when taking out a pc for cleaning or anything else to always power it off. Press the power button multiple times after it's been unplugged and just simply wait 2-3mins for any lil current that could still be flowing. Its usually what causes motherboards and other delicate parts to fry.
@@Lonzology that is what i usually do, weather cleaning moving parts around or changing parts, i find on motherboards with a light, if you press and hold power button down, after turning off the power supply the light will go out. basically suck the power supply dry. lol

I've been watching the Fix or Flop series since episode one, and it's teaching me quite a bit about troubleshooting PC problems. That long delay where the fans are off, during your first power-on attempt: that's mostly memory timing training. I believe it precedes POST, which is why there weren't any beeps from the speaker.
You'll very rarely encounter this outside of memory overclocking, but it's a symptom to keep at the back of your mind.
Glad I found your channel really enjoy watching your show . Str8 to the point no messing around ......as soon as I get a GPU I can start my build confident if I run in to a problem I will be able to solve it after watching lost if your repairs

Thank you for posting this video. I have what appears to be a similar problem in a build with a 1700x and have something new to try for troubleshooting. I would have NEVER considered a memory channel failure in the CPU. Great video.
After swapping the 1700X for a 1600, everything seems to now be working fine. I'll test the 1700X in another board to make sure, but I never would have considered only part of a CPU failing. Thanks again for the video.
Thank you for the info you provide to the masses! I have 3 gaming PC's to maintain at home, they're my boys and mine. It's a genious series, because a regular person with just one PC would never run into a lot of these issues.
absolutely love watching your videos!! being a first time pc builder, i find your videos like these very educational to where I can self diagnose if need be!! i did end up figuring out that i needed to bios flash my board to work with my 5600x cpu. which was not fun at first but then i realised that the usb flash drive i was using, did not allow me to do FAT32. swapped it out and fixed my issue!!! thank you for posting these kinds of videos!!!!
