Awesome video and well explained. I just spent couple of hours watching your videos to understand how my quad work, and the way you deliver the info to us makes it even more easier to understand this complex topic. Your channel is so underrated among our community. Thank for your work and keep going!
OMG!!! have been trying to tune my first 9 inch build for a month now! I thought I knew it all. but wow was I wrong. this vid helped. Thank you for your content (and humbling me). Please do not stop sharing!
Really good stuff. Thank you. I watched your "tune betaflight in 2 packs" video. I was still wasn't understanding the pb balance and pb gain. When you talked about it in this video.....cleared it right up for me. Please keep these videos coming.
Wowie! I took your advice and disabled all gyro filters on a clean build and I've never felt so connected. I had to turn down FF a little, I think it was compensating too much for the delay. Leaving dterm slider at 2x gave me video noise, so I brought it down like you said (oops!)
Hi! Great tips, great video, great great knowledge! I've tuned my quad with these rules and came with settings: D-term filter 1.3, Low pass 1 and 2 OFF, PID MM 1.1, PD Balance 0.8, P and D gain 1.3. It's a 5'' quad with DC frame and XING 2207 motors (about 6 kg of thrust). Weight 670g with battery. It flies better now (I'm just a beginner) than with both filter sliders to the right as it was set earlier. The most significant change is that propwash and some oscillations when hovering just above grass (15cm) are limited to minimum (but still somewhat visible). I've one question. When I raise further D term filter slider (above 1.4) or PD gain slider the quad became "nervous" when idling (just after arming) on the ground. By nervous I mean some rapid rpm changes that can be heard. There are no visible problems when flying with these settings and motors are not hot. Should I push it further with minimizing PID loop delay and PD gain increase to damp rest of propwash or leave it that way when it's relatively "calm" in idle state?
this is fantastic, please do more of these. a simple explanation of each slider or function in betaflight and how it affects different size quads. 5 at a time so it's digestible.
I know you said typically, but literally just a few hours ago... I've just got a Betafpv 85 pro 2, a 85mm 2" 2s whoop. I got it specifically for its power to weight ratio for the International Game of Whoop. I got p/d to .8 before I could see bounce back. Unfortunately it has zero spare UARTs for blackbox.
Really appreciate the info! I’ve had quite a bit of fun tinkering! Finally getting my rates where I like them and tweak the pids fly tweak the pids fly. I feel like I’m making real progress! Great Content, thank you!
Nice easy to understand, without to much fuss about filtering and stuff like that! For new pilots these tutorials are realy good! Cheers! (i am talking about the bit after 2 minutes,)
Thanks for the pro tips! Please do a specific tune guide for fixing micro shakes and wobble in straight forward flight... Is it realy imposible to have both freestyle tune and locked smooth forward flight tune? Thanks
6inch. Before i use runcam5 and its fine.. Now i use gopro6 it starts shakeing/wobble at forward flight..i already crank up to higer pid but still there
These are some really good pointers! Currently on a 510g (with battery) 6s 5"racer. I have a 0.9 PD Balance with a PD gain of 1.3. might actually try and lower the balance even more to see how it behaves. Filtering is 2.0 on gyro and 1.3ish on d-term but will try and disable the gyro and see what happens
I have to tune a few quads.. this will help.. changed props and affected it a lil on one. A lot on another.. New FC on one has it at default and fc doesn't fit in frame so it basically hard mounted so doesn't fly well at all.. i need to move all that into a betafpv 85mm I believe.
Thx! Some guidance on feed forward would also be great. BF4.2 on defaults feels as if the full stick range is no longer being used. It seems to emphasize smooth moves around center stick, but snappy half rolls or half flips into inverted feel less predictable.
Thanks Mark, another great one. So what's stil a little mystery is choosing the master slider position for adressing the overall I-term. Right from the flight feel I think I-term isn't that important than with older Betaflight versions, so mostly I use master on 1.0. Any hints on determine a good preselection on this?
I-Term has a super wide window; especially so with I-Term Relax since it addresses the negative effects of i-Term in sharp stick moves. I would say if you are doing sweeping moves and the gyro is not tracking the sticks or feels loose, up the i-gains. If not, lower or leave it.
I'm back here after maiden on my own built 4" Flywoo Explorer. 3000mAh 3S and I'm seasick on the default PIDs. Probably need to raise both balance and gain - a bit. Is there a Christmas special covering specifically those LiIon LR quads that's somewhat a hype nowadays? 🎅

A bit of chatter is showing up in turns so it is reciprocity is still the thing. I have a concern about hitting the red lines Beatflight has set. How much concern should be placed on the warning markers?
Do you mean in Blackbox spectrum analyzer? If talking about the PIDs grid, i would not worry about that. They go away once you save. I'm not a fan of that add. It is a narrow thought process and does not consider different quad classes.
UAV Tech thank you, it is the grid flag and possible flyaway notice. It has made me overly cautious about the “guard rails”. I’m battling Ethic Cinerat. A number of owners have had hot motors on the frame especially with the TPU prop guards installed. This has been a great help with your power to weight breakdown and PD adjustments. BLHeli_32, yes. It has for a while. So just get on the latest BLHeli_32 firmware and you are set. Do make sure that once you enabled RPM Bi-Directional telemetry, to check error % in Motors tab to make sure stays below 1% as you ramp each motor.
UAV Tech I thought I heard they add support in the latest BLHeli-S software that would support it and you wouldn’t need to flash JESC? Maybe I misheard it but I thought Bardwell mentioned it in one of his last Livestreams.
There is a Fork (a copy) for BLHeli_S where someone added bi-directional to BLHeli_S. But it is not the BLHei_S project direct. That is Jazz Maverick and to install on the ESCs, you have to download the HEX files directly and load through the BLHeli_S configurator: github.com/JazzMaverick/BLHeli/tree/16.78_A/BLHeli_S%20SiLabs/Hex_files_16.77

Would toothpick class be higher power/weight ratio? Have one that’s running rpm filters on 4.2 and has some oscillations in the top end of the throttle
Yeah, toothpicks generally have a higher power to weight. They are very susceptible to just a little off balanced props. So i would look there first. I had a horrible toothpic until i got good props. What worked for me were HQ 65mm. I recommend just getting a bunch of brands of props and see what flies best. IF you still have the issue, it could be P and D gain is too high. In that case you can mess with TPA or move down the P and D gain slider. That said, again, in my experience with toothpics it is all about the props.
I guess it’s not exactly a toothpick, maybe this will help but I’m guessing kind of the same situation still. It’s 3” props on 3s w/a toothpick style frame&build. I was using the Gemfan 3014 Biblade & the 2.5bi & 3 triblades from Gemfan think, I have some of the HQ 65mm I’ll try the p&d slider as well, thank you for the reply, I really appreciate the tips from someone as knowledgeable as yourself

You can probably just turn off and leave D-Term at 2.0. HOWEVER, do play with D-term slider lower than too. You might be surprised at the results (look at wash and smooth flight).
Does disabling gyro filters is dangerous for heavy bend/broken props. I have gyro filter slider at 2.0 and just let the gyro filters being enabled for that reason, not sure though if bend/broken props causing noise that high in frequency?
If at 2.9, the Dyn Notch and RPM notches are doing 90% of the work. Bent props will still vibrate at the RPM frequency, it is just the amplitude will be greater. But with a notch, they crush so hard it should not matter. Of course keeping on does provide some additional attenuation, but at 2.0, a pretty small amount in the grand scheme of it all.
