    She should have won a medal for this routine. The American gymnasts were severely underscored in the 70s.

      She was better than the medalists. Corrupt judging. However. She got to go home to the USA
      They went home to East Germany. And Russia
      She won the Gold in life

      She should have won a medal but the judges were corrupt. Her performance was not where are the EG gymnasts now. hopefully not where their swimmers are
      life goes on regardless
      Her daughters have done well
      Her performance is still a beautiful example of grace and beauty

    Simply beautiful choreography....and very strong tumbling.....gosh we miss such elegance of movement and combination today.

    Loved watching this again Joanie! Your center of gravity rose on the front aerial!

    The double full was big time for females in 72'....I think it was the best one thrown from all of the females in the 72 games.

      Double twist was in 1972 what the double twisting double layout is today.

    Another beautiful routine underscored -- a constant in those times.

    I love the move at 1.03, where she rolls backwards into her shoulder, then gracefully flips over & back onto her feet again. So casual, as if it's the most natural thing in the world 🙂

    I never realized that the US ladies finished 4th as a team here - a fantastic result for them at the time for which they deserve a lot of credit... They left without medals but this along with Kathy Rigby's silver on beam at the previous worlds gave the women's program some momentum that paved the way for even better results starting with Marcia Frederick's world title on the bars 6 years later.

    That exercise would have held up well in Montreal or even the 1978 World Championships!

    After compulsories
    the US women and Hungary were virtually tied for third place, it was actually that close and the US women despite being underscored had a real chance, but the judges made sure that that never happened.. the US women had an early session for optionals while the Hungarian team got the later session and the score differences were ridiculous which is how Hungary ended up finishing third..

      As unfortunate as it was that they left without the bronze, this team deserves a lot of credit for finishing 4th. When you put that into context, all these years later, this was a fantastic result for them, and one that pushed the sport forward in the USA.

    they had a book about her in my Elementary school- I was there 73-78, and big into gymnastic (see my avatar), I used to check it out all the time- but I never saw her compete until now- THANKS! She must have gotten married right after this, because the book was Joan Moore Rice.

    Amazing tumbling, especially thinking about the lack of springs under the floor. Ahead of her time.

    • @MrMelodifestivalen
      @MrMelodifestivalen 6 лет назад +10

      And this was EARLY 70s at that! Not really fair to hold them to the same standards we have today. Language is always evolving and these sort of descriptors were not at all offensive at the time.

  • @finfelagund
    @finfelagund 2 месяца назад

    She had twice the difficulty of any of the finalists, yet she was way out of any contention, due to the perverse judging system. The judging in Munich was probably the worst in the gymnastic history, it was actually a mere reflection of the political dispute in the midst of the Cold War, without any connection to the sport itself.

    I can’t get over how sexist the announcers sound referring to the gymnasts as “little girls” or “gals.” That wouldn’t go over well today. 🤣🤣🤣
