FYI, the core Helix team from before the Yamaha acquisition is pretty much the same as Helix team after the acquisition. However, the Helix team is a pretty different crew than earlier products (HD500, etc.). ALSO, I want to mention that the people at REVV have been super cool to work with. There's nothing like a full stack blazing behind you, flapping your pants. I loved playing the real REVV amp. Hopefully the people who love the REVV models will consider a real REVV amp if they need to get loud, and hopefully the Revv fans who own a Rev won't feel weird if they want to mess with POD Go or Helix native in a recording or low volume situation. Everyone wins when the companies are cool and cooperative. Cheers! --Ben

I don't you could do that and get any meaningful result,
Line 6 did a great job on their model, however there are a few things to consider,
One the signal chains are not EXACTLY same, there the captor could color it ever so slightly, which would show up in the null test.
Two from what i understand L6 does not model the power section of their amps, cause apparently from what i read it doesn't make a lot of difference, but its just something that might come out in a Null test
Three, L6 did not use Glenns rev for the model, there is no telling what other factors could play into a model of one amp sounding different then another amp, like How long the amp been physically on creating heat for the tubes and the circuits, or how new are the tubes in the amp, are those tubes biaed exactly like the tubes in glenns amp or even slight revisions between glenns amp and the amp that L6 team used,
And to top it off the final process for a amp model is actual people tuning the model to taste, to het it as close as possible, there are way to many factors in the game to expect a zero sum null test for this setup,
I would say that a null test doesn;t really matter in this case anyway, it sounds like a rev, and there are very minor differences when switching from one to the other, which can be explain with the above factors, and for sub 500 dollars vs 3000 dolars for a real rev gen 120. i don't care about those differences.
Honestly I'm not even sure if a Null test would work with two off the shelf amps of the same kind.

    • @heresjonny666
      @heresjonny666 4 года назад +1

@@blaness13 I'd say it's still worth doing. A null test doesn't have to be silent to show how close the sound is. I'd definitely be interested in hearing a null test of two of the same amp, though, that's an interesting thought!
To overcome the power amp problem, could reamp through the helix but then put that out (via output or the send) into the return of the revv, because then you're just essentially putting the 'preamp' into the power amp so would nullify the power amp colouring, then both tones are also going through the torpedo.

    • @acommon

    • @rhitosparsha
      @rhitosparsha 4 года назад

@@blaness13 I agree with your points mostly, except for number two. Line 6 does model the power section of all amps. What you said was true for the X3 generation, but from the HD generation onwards, Line 6 models the power amps as well.
For example, when they made the Badonk, which was based on their popular Big Bottom amp from the XT generation, they added a power amp section to the amp, because the original didn't have one.

I have owned a Helix for a while, the Revv Gen Purple was my main tone on it and I was getting impressive results.
Recently I became proud owner of a Revv Generator 100p and now use the Helix in the FX loop for effects.
The main difference in my humble opinion is that yes, you can get a Revv tone out of the sim, but the real deal takes WAY less tweaking time and EQ to blow you away.
Also that tube amp "smack in the face" is missing in the simulation.
Other than that, hats off to Line6, they nailed the sim on this one.

There is one element missing from these things. They could mimic precisely, and they would still be inferior. Before you start slamming me, my setup has moved from amps to emulation.
Glen touched on it when he said about his valves: Everyone is going to sound largely the same. We are getting to the point where guitar music is going stale. Think of EVH, Hendrix , on bass you have Entwistle. These people pushed the tech. They rewired amps, and combined equipment that wasn't meant to go together to make sounds that were literally unheard of, that others are STILL emulating.
Even Glen's sounds are sounding tired, not because he isn't novel, but because, as an influencer everyone is copying him.
Ever tried to get an old beringer pad mixer? Yeah, he mentioned them and they were gone. Find your own way. Use channels like these as a guide, or reference for a specific issue you have, or (Krom forbid) entertainment.
All guitar sounds are pretty much 5150 V30 SM57 or the target sound of almost everyone's ear. It's the loudness wars all over again.
I don't offer a magic wand... I'm not some big shot producer. But damn are things getting samey.

While I’m always working to improve my own production, I have to remind myself that the goal shouldn’t be to sound like my favorite records. People should want to find inspiring tones that they love playing with and not to create some tone that is used on every record out.

    Clip 1: Red
    A - POD
    B - Revv
    Clip 2: Purple
    A - Revv
    B - POD
Clip 1B, in the jazzier reverby part, I can hear more low end response through the tail of the reverb. So thats why I'm gonna call it the Revv.
Clip 2A cuts through better, so that's why I'm calling it the Revv.

In my opinion, since the POD 500 era, modelers were good enough to perform with and "get away with it".
The crowed can't tell the difference in my opinion, all they hear is "tsssssssssss" anyways.
Helix brought snapshots which allowed you to perform and switch sounds without that 20 ms delay (I have to say that a friend of mine had a 500x that literally had no delays whatsoever which was super weired, because mine did, with the same presets!)
This is a Helix but stripped down, so no wonder it sounds great.
If you're considering and you're reading it- just buy one. that or the helix. in regards to live tones- you'll be set for life.

I have never quite heard anything come close to recording the real thing. I would love it if somebody has any suggestions that isn't a desktop plugin to prove me wrong. It truly is the amp I find most synthetic in modellers.

I had a hd500x years ago and it was "not that great" As far as the A B clips I would say that you could hear a slight EQ difference . That could be fixed with a EQ block on the pod go,or post . I have been playing in bands since the 80's and even when guys had high priced amps - they or the sound guy would make them sound like shit half the time. So I think the Helix and the pod go is going to help people sound great when the play live. Or help with the " sounds like the studio recording " part . Now they need a pod go for singers & bass players & drummers .

The obvious use for the Pod Go is for live gigs. No heavy tube amps and 4x12s, no complex pedalboards and setup. You just grab a guitar and this and Go, that's was the goal, I think, judging by the name. Who cares if it's 97% or 95% or even 90% as the real thing? The IRs play an important role here. As I am not a musician, just looking to noodle around with some guitar, I have been searching out affordable LP style guitars, and have been looking into something along the lines of a Pod GO or Headrush Gigboard. I kimda think as a beginner this would allow a lot of flexibility to experiment with a variety of 70s-80s rock/blues tones and other stuff, without needing to begin assembling a decent sized pedalboard. Do you think that would be a decent route to take?
I kinda liked the look of the Gigboard UI more, and don't see myself needing a wah or volume pedal for a good while. Have you played with Headrush stuff at all? Lastly, any recomendations on beginner priced LP style guitars to start with? Just want to appriximate sounds from songs I like, to keep me interested and learning, and mainly just after something of enough quality that the gear doesn't discourage and stifle the learning process. I would also love gear that is cheap enough that I don't fret about letting my 3 kids noodle with it as well. My almost 10 year old loves music and has a keyboard and acoustic guitar already.

Once sims nail that part they will be indistinguishable. Truth is 99.99 percent of people listening to a tune would never know the difference between the Rev or the Pod Go on your record. Sure tubes and pedals sound better, but time is also money, taking 10-15 minutes to setup and troubleshoot was never appealing to me and it discourages me from playing half the time. But having something that takes up little to no space and have everything I needed. Not to mention getting props from the biggest Line 6 hater like Glen speaks wonders.
