About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, and plugin effects. Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!
Holy shit I thought it sounded alright until I heard it against the Revv and Bias
JKGuitar100 you aren't alone
It sounds dead compared to them.
I was of the same mind lol
I wonder how much difference it really makes to the casual listener who isn't listening to a side-by-side comparison, but just listening to a song.
Same, I was like "That ain't bad" but in that rotating mix I was like "Holy shit, that's terrible"
I didn’t know EA made amps
lol lol lol lol that's great
It’s in the name. Wait..
The first Dethklok album was recorded on a standard Line 6 POD HD, so it can't be too bad.
I am a huge dethklok fan. every single album his tone is atrocious
Are you kidding me? Brendon's tone on Dethalbum 3 is god like. Probably the best metal tone I have ever heard. It's heavy, while still being clear and crisp.
HE JUST ROASTED THE SHIT OUT OF FLUFF!!!!!
1:38
+Joshua Maletta yep he did jajaja
my eyes burned out of my skull from the heat of that burn
Fluff is a big fan of the channel, so I think he's more likely referring to Fluff's video after Glenn tore into the Spider where Fluff took a spider and tried to make a decent tone with it. In his video he lead you through everything he did including a lot of post-processing. I'm sure Glenn's "Fluff" comment was to say he's not going to post-produce the hell out of it to make it sound good... but Fluff's approach was quite different in that video.
All in all, I don't see any drama here or "suck burn". More like a hat-tip and buddy-ribbing.
Dylan Neuens Lol i know. That's why I said "Roasted". They are great friends. Glen got on Fluffs spider demo and his comment was that he thought "it still sounds like fried assholes" No drama, just lunch table jokes between two guys in the same profession
A couple years ago I had just started playing guitar and wanted to get a spider 4. The guy at guitar center steered me toward a marshall mg30cfx. He had me plug a guitar into it, and went over the different effects and channels. He even explained how it wouldn't sound as good as a tube amp with pedals, and told me where to start looking for a specific tone. After he plugged in a spider 4 and had me play with it, I walked out with the Marshall. He wasn't the hero I deserved, but he was the hero I needed.
In my opinion the distortion on positive grid sounds terrible. It doesn't sound like distortion, it sounds like digital clipping.
He probably had his input too high.
mister fiero I seriously doubt that
Bias sounds like shit anyway. I tried it for a whole week, but it's basically a glorified POD Farm.
The problem with his review on the Pod HD is he’s only looking at it from a studio’s perspective. Sure Bias allows you to amp match (if you’re willing to pay for the $199 version and I’ve found out this feature is a dice roll) , but can you play gigs with it? Only if you’re willing to either hook up your laptop to a PA or if you shell out an additional $1,200 which you might as well either get a brand new Helix or a used Axe FX 2 which gives you more features than the Bias head.
The real amp also was louder then the pod in the mix so of course louder sounds better it’s bias no pun intended
audio equipment with paid DLC : /
I think they colaborated with EA for this one
Line 6... EA of music
"Bias doesn't nickel and dime you"???
That's why they have a $50 metal signature amp pack on their site? That's why they have completely separate programs if you want fx or if you want to be able to mod amps? That's why each program has 2 different versions?
Not that Line 6's amp packs aren't horse shit, but if you're going to attempt to come across as unbiased (no pun intended) then you should probably at least get the details right about the product you're recommending as an alternative (that you've taken sponsorship from in the past)
Bias sounds like garbage and nickels and dimes you like any of the others out there. They didn't do that shit much at first, but certainly do now.
Poor fluff
Misha used a pod x3 bean to record the entire first album for animals as leaders. I believe Tosin said in an interview that they used IRs for the cabs, which makes most digital modelers sound amazing with a decent IR.
nothing beats the Revv :)
SEX
True,
Revv is godlike

1:39 for people who throw up that same argument about Ola's video sounding better. Great work on this, Glenn! Usually people approach a review like this on a notorious piece of gear with a 'How strong is my mixing game and how good can I make this sound' versus 'What does the average consumer get for their money.' I'm an average consumer and not an Ola Englund, so I appreciate this.
+12ealDeal Ola is a monster talent & a good dude. I can't play like him, unfortunately! I'm much more concerned with the "average Joe."
+SpectreSoundStudios You're right with that. There is a plenty of samples on youtube, where POD HD sounds really good, but the problem is, you need shit load of time to tweak it. I'm average Joe, I've spend lot's of time with my POD HD, and.... it's still sounds average at best. Some time ago I thought that I won't get better sound for this kind of money. Fortunately with today's amp sims like BIAS, I can say big F... Y... to LINE6.
PS. Good review, good video, and good job in general. I don't agree with everything you say, but I can still appreciate your good work. Greetings from Poland. \m/
+12ealDeal Ola, Fluff, Chapman, etc... All these guys are doing "demonstrations" and are paid to do it. It cannot be considered as reviews. Very few real reviews are available on YT. You have to try the gear yourself... Hopefully, Glenn will not become a demonstrator.
Why is every body so enthusiastic about Bias? I've installed the Demo version and it's near to impossible for me to get a decent tone. Most of the tone-cloud stuff could not be accessed with the demo though. I had more luck with the Mercuriall U530 demo, I'm thinking of buying that.
Just finished watching a couple of videos on the Pod 2.0 from Ola Englund and Andertons and the Pod held up pretty well.
Pod 2.0 and pod HD are different Products
Man, that's such a last gen technology. I'm starting to feel like we're picking on the guy in a wheelchair at this moment.
agreed
+deadasfak A lot of people still use POD HDs though, whether it's the desktop, the Pro, the 500, or any of the X models, people are still using them as often as people are using MKII Axe Fx 2s and Kempers. More or less a poor man's axe fx, per say.
I do. Really sings. Took 2 years to make it sound that good for playing leads though. I dialed it through a 100 watt tube poweramp and two 412s...and it sounds like ass in other configurations...like direct...but I found the magic for sure. And at normal volume too!
Rick Feith Hey, what I've observed is that the preamp section is not that bad on these early modelers. It's the rest that sucks, but the axe and the kamper are now good enough to go direct.
Yeah, the crippled guy who's stiffing people out of money, and then having to pay extra to get more crap.
It honestly wasn't that bad in the mix in my opinion. Any amp sim, amp, or software I use I tweak the hell out of anyways so It really isn't that greater of a task than the usual to get a usable tone.
Cheers 🍻
Great honest review with no post processing and 3rd party IR's, much appreciated. I always thought periphery used the axe fx ultra on their first album.
+tetra3000 I may have been misinformed
+SpectreSoundStudios I believe the guitar on the album was recorded using the Axe FX but the bass was recorded with a POD of some type, possibly an XT?
It's a shame Glenn is sponsered by Positive Grid, then we could see a real "honest review" of BIAS. Yeah the POD sounds washy and faded, but BIAS just sounds so digital and squashed, like it's clipping more than Death Magnetic. The only thing that sounded good here was the REV, I have never heard a distortion BIAS tone that didn't sound poor. And I love how you complain about amp packs being sold separately with Line6, but I guess BIAS Desktop not having ANY effects pedals, forcing you to buy a completely separate program (BIAS FX) to get them, is A-OK. Pull up your pants Glenn, your hypocrisy is showing.
JimJamBanx this is truth right here. For the life of me I cannot understand the hype with bias. I can't stand the tones it produces. And they also fuck you money wise with bias amp or bias fx, or whatever else. Plus there's basic version or pro version, with each. It's ridiculous and doesn't sound good. Not to mention the $1,000 bias head which is the SAME tones just amplified through a head lol.
JimJamBanx I use Bias Amp and at first it's weird but once you use it with Bias FX or JamUp you get to really hear results. You also have to keep in mind that it is simulating not just the amp and can but also the microphone and mic placement. Once you start using presets from FX, it really shines.
I will say Glenn was totally wrong about Positive Grid not having pay walls as JamUp, Bias Amp, and Bias FX all have pay walls to access some amps and effects
Especially considering Amplitube's heavy tones are better than Bias, in my opinion. And Amplitube is $150 for the normal version and $300 for the deluxe compared to Bias's $400 basic, $550 Mid teir and $700 for the High teir. Bias has some great tones. The 5150 sim in this sounds good but is outclassed by the Revv. The cleans on Bias are unmatched by any other sim though, in my opinion, at least from the sim's i've heard.
Matticus Get Mercuriall anyway.
John Yang I've never heard of mercuriall. I'll have to check it out.
periphery used the AXE FX on their first album. they used the pod for their bass tones though. which were badass
I got a line 6 ad for this
Periphery used an Axe FX Ultra on their first album, Glenn. Most demos released before that was a pod, and you can definitely tell.
3 years ago I invested in the rack mount HD Pro and used it for tracking guitar and bass on an entire metal album. I was able to get some professional tones and a lot of guys on the forums did to. I've since moved on to the Axe FX and Overloud TH3 but I still own the Pod HD and have no regrets.
even though I follow this channel, I know nothing about Music Production, but I now know why he uses that Rev Generator
Hey man, just wanted to stop by and say that even though I don't record, I really enjoy your content, it's interesting, informative and sometimes pretty funny. You stay true to yourself regardless of what people might think, and that's something I really admire, keep up the great work :)
to say that positive grid dont screw you over is a little untrue, most of the tonecloud presets don't specifically say on them whether they require the professional version until you download them and actually try to use them, which is really unfair considering you can demo them perfectly fine.
+Rob Lockley Bias says it from the start. Right on store page.
BiasFX Desktop - 12 amps and 30 effects
BiasFX Professional - 32 amps and 52 effects
+Rob Lockley good point. I've always used the full versions.
In all fairness, a line 6 POD used is around the same price as the full version of BIASfx, and you're not nickeled and dimed prior to making the purchase. Albeit to really customize your tone you do need to purchase BIAS not just BIASfx, and if you want to customize your pedals you need to get BIAS PEDAL. Which are $200 a piece for the full versions. But comparatively to the POD and what not it's definitely a better purchase.
+Evil Gremlin I think the solution would be some way to filter presets on the cloud a little better.
Yea that's kinda annoying, but I find that if you use BIAS amp and Jamup together, you don't need other people's presets.
That's not true, Periphery did NOT use POD HD on their first album, they had the AXE FX at that time. Bulb demos were almost all POD X3 Pro. Chimp Spanner, however, have used POD HD at least on "All Roads Lead Here."
guitarvibe75 Periphery used the XT with the “Big Bottom” pre set.
The Revv sounds the best. Fuller, chunkier. Crisp and clear note definition. It literally sounds "wider". Does that make sense?
I really love it when u alternate the different tones repeatedly to really show the difference
everybody knows that any factory preset sucks big time in any gear.
+mtsn I wasn't using a factory preset. I was using one "tweaked" by a longtime user.
+mtsn A good piece of gear sounds good in any configuration. Any gear that you have to play with the knobs hours to get a good or even decent tone is a piece of shit.
+SpectreSoundStudios What's your opinion on acoustic amps?
+SpectreSoundStudios lol you call yourself a "sound engineer" and yet you use somebody's tweaked patches... what a dumbass! you do know everything has an effect from the wood used in the guitar, pickups, cord as well so it wouldnt sound as the same on the patch that was sent to you that is why you have to tweak it...btw there is a 30 day money return for those expansion pack
Eric Kindel
The wood doesn't effect the sound.
Glenn I really love your mixes. Sound so crisp and clear. I've been subbed for almost a year! No ragrets
I'd like to see your review on an Amplifire, at least it can be loaded with 3rd party ir sims
Fearless Gear Reviews are definitely my favourite thing on this channel. Keep it up! (please)
do a review on the hd500x as its more modern and i would like to see an honest review on it
+Dan Aston I will if I can get my hands on one!
+SpectreSoundStudios The 500x is identical bar a little extra dsp. You can stack more fx before you hit the limit. sonically and model wise it's exactly the same.
+SpectreSoundStudios Hey Glenn!
I really wish you would do on a Blackstar amp from the ID:TVP (True Valve Power) series. For a digital amp, I think they do a tremelendous (see what I did there?) job at emulating tubes. I have one, and I think it has been one of the first amp to do a great job at emulating valves. They rock.
Kindest regards,
That dude from Skinweaver
+SpectreSoundStudios There's already 2 strikes against Line 6 on the Fearless Gear Reviews. Strike 3 and I'm boycotting Line 6 entirely.
+Dan Aston Their new unit it's called AMPLIFi (even has hipster BS spelling) and comes with "monitors" (Not just amps they claim to have full range) and "mod" like units. Except you know work all of it with ipads.
Hey these reviews are great! Thanks for taking the time to put these through several different testing phases.
I was wondering... is there a CHANCE you might review the good old ZOOM 505II I'm sure a LOT of us would love to hear what you got to say.
Thanks
as I watch this, I find myself watching the background monitor practically the whole time
Dude, that 4K boost on the Pod HD is just magnificent
Your shot at Fluff makes me sadz :(
+James Branstetter Fuck fluff - Glen is way more honest and trustworthy - Fluff will say anything for a $
@@venomoverlord7016 mmmmmm how does that comment stand right now?
@@victorbicudo1374 for the most part Fluff is actually watchable now but his clean tone has a fairly chunky amount of drive to it.
I really dig your videos but to be honest on this one i have seen alot of players get a way way better tone on pod hd than the one in the video plus comparing it with a real amp which costs more than a few times more is not that fair.
+Hait Parikh you can get a better tone with impulses, absolutely. Bu
+SpectreSoundStudios Obviously, with impulse you dont have to do anything. The work has already done by someone else...
+SpectreSoundStudios You dont need to use impulses, just mess with the tone a bit. Not souding good right away = shit ? If you just go, type "pod HD metal tone tutorial" there are tons of people making the pod sound waaay better then in your review in like 10 min. long videos, so you could just start there, you would have some decent tones on pod in like 10-20 mins just by following the advices of people who really care about the product and dont just talk shit to feel more profesional. Yes, it is an low end gear, hell yes the mesa dual rec. will sound way better then treadplate on POD, but it is not a shitty piece gear, you were just lazy to even try, or you are simply preoccupied to line 6 gear. I generally like your vids, but you failed on this one. And make fun of my english if you want to, not an native speaker so I dont really give a shit...
+Hait Parikh Pod HD 500 = 500$ , Randall 1503, 400$, sounds 10 times better then a pod
bro If you look closely NO ONE IS TALKING ABOUT POD HD 500, were talking about Pod HD .
Yeah I'd jab the competition too if I was sponsored by Bias.
Thought it didn't sound too bad, and then you did the side by side comparisons and wow!! Nothing beats the real amp, but even the 5150 sim sounded way better... Great stuff!
The Line 6 doesn't sound half bad until you hear it next to the REV. Then it sounds like dog shit; based on a single preset.
+CoolEditz I agree with you
I want dog shit for tone.
While I don't produce or mix metal, your videos are fantastic. Love how you can be brutal In one video and in the next be very nice and professional. Love it.
Yep, I have an old copy of POD Farm laying around from a Christmas gift a few years ago. Everything Glenn said in this review applies to that as well. Same issues with DLC. It comes loaded with hundreds of presets, but you can't use most of them because they're built with the DLC amp/effects packs. The amps and cabs they give you are sub par, the effects are actually not bad (excluding reverb). All in all, it's pretty meh. It's serviceable if you're just learning to play in your bedroom, but I wouldn't recommend it for much more than that. It's old technology in the amp sim world. Line 6 practically abandoned it and are all in with their Helix stuff now, yet they still continue to sell it at the same prices they debuted at years ago.
Hey man. I just wanted to say, I love your videos and your honest opinions. Even though I'm not that much of a real shredder, I've learned loads from your channel and I just love your gear reviews.
Please keep up the good work!
1:38 That's the problem with all these sims. You plug your guitar into a beaten 5150 in a public rehearsal space and even without touching the knobs it sounds good. You select a 5150 preset in any amp simulator plugin and it doesn't sound anything like whatever it supposed to mimic. You spend the whole night fiddling with the knobs and EQs and you start to like how it sounds. Then you listen to a reference mix or a track you've recorded through a real thing and realize that the sim still sounds dildos. And it's like 2am and you can't do anything productive now. Happens every time.
+Daniel Leonov Cheapest used 5150 combo I could find is 780 euros. The head alone it's at least 600. Sorry but we're talking vastly different budgets.
+dimitriid A new PodHDX will run close to 500 euros. Add a power amp and a speaker cab you are up to the price of a 6505 combo, maybe more.
I said a USED 5150 so why bring up a brand new pod hd 500? That's the one point that Glenn got right: Line 6 ARE fucking scum when it comes to selling old products at stupid prices. So if you're going for new equipment, compare the AMPLIFi thingie to a brand new 5150 (no cabs since you need it for both fair enough there) Guess which one will be more expensive, by like a lot of money?
Sorry I misunderstood you. 600 euro (850-900 canadian dollar) is the street price for a brand new 6505 combo here. This is only 135 euro more than a pod HD500 alone. I guess we are just lucky to have peavey stuff at that price.
@@dimitriid ahh if only you could see how cheap 6505 mh are now
It's 2021 and I subscribed because this video saved me from blowing money on an old pod hd. Love the brutal honesty! Fuck yeah!
It's exactly like you said.. Pod HD can get you very good tones, but unfortunately this needs time.. Because the Stock Cabs/Mics suck and you have to EQ them in order to make them sound good.
For me, (that I can't afford high end modelling gear, like the Axe FX, Kemper or Helix), the Pod HD is my savior.
And that's because, after a year of extensive usage, research on forums and messing around with it, I can finally get "any" tone I want, after a certain amount of tweaking.
So I would suggest that if you don't want to pay a small fortune for an amp or modelling gear AND you are willing to spend some significant time in learning how to get usable tones out of the POD HD, then buy it. Otherwise, don't even think about it.
And as for the Metal Packs that you have to pay in order to use these specific amps, I guarantee you that they are not necessary in order to get a good tone. I am not saying whether they worth the money or not, but as I have bought all of the packs, I can honestly say that some of them are good, but I am also pretty sure that you can get close to the sound of them using stock amps and proper EQing.
Hope this helps anyone interested in buying the Pod HD :)
Hey Glen, great demo! I thought this really clearly helps demonstrate the difference I've been struggling to explain to musicians for a long time. Nothing comes close to the real amp.
The demo of them directly next to them in the A/B/C route is the best way to show this stuff, so thanks! :)
Positive Grid is charging extra for a metal tone preset pack so they aren't exactly any better.
+Brandon Yancar fuck them all!!! Try Lepou free plugins.
I really appreciate these reviews. I work pretty hard on my guitar tones and often struggle to translate those into recordings in a very small apartment studio. Sometimes, when guys like me have to try something like the POD completely out of context and it can sound alright; we can't all compare next to awesome gear like this and we get ripped off. Seeing this compared to actual gear and also other emulators is invaluable! For what its worth for anyone reading, I'm fairly confident that POD heavy patch used in the song was a best case scenario. In my job as a live engineer, I've only ever heard ONE player bring in a usable 'red bean' POD patch, it wasn't a heavy tone and it took him years to dial in just right - even then it was just passable for a small club venue. Keep it up man these are great!
Life's too short to spend a year fucking with controls to make a piece of shit sound okay.
And seriously, if one has a job, in a year if you budget correctly, you can get some really great sounding gear that sounds good just naturally.
I don't understand the laziness it takes to make a Line 6 Pod or Spider try and sound good. Just save up and buy a real amp you cheap fucks!
Not directed at you, just tired of seeing lazy, tone deaf musicians.
Budgeting for a good amp isn't always possible, and even if someone has a good amp, they may not be able to record it in their living space. Additionally, many guitar players get scammed into buying this junk and really believe it does/can/should sound good, subsequently they will do everything in their power to justify this belief.
I agree many musicians are 'tone' deaf these days, and just as many worship iconic gear and assume that if they own it their sound will have awesome 'tone'. A persons perception of what is good also changes with time. When I was young it was all about crazy effects and distortion, but as my sound matured it was a challenge the gear to go with it.
I live in a small apartment and have an infant, I can't really record, ever. Additionally, if some cheap piece of gear happens to provide great tone (i.e. Joyo American for example) I want to know about it. Anyway, your right, the time it takes to tweak cheap gear to sound good is often wasted.
The Revv Generator wins!
Glenn, I recently saw someone write that the POD sucks primarily because of the cabinet sim. i'd love to see you do another video where you use a POD (or POD HD), bypass the cabinet and go into your IR cabinets.
man, you cant compare a $200-500 pod hd to a $2000-3000 revv 120 head
But you can compare that amp to an axe fx, which sounds identical and has more tones than a tube amp can ever have.
but you can compare it to bias
Bar Goldstein bias is no better
Bias costs about 250$
Bar Goldstein bias sounds like shit u530 is free and million times better.
GLENN! This was a great A/B! I would love to see more of this kind of editing when A/Bing tones. Faster cuts between different sounds, and more than one example of each without any gaps in between! works so well. Sometimes when it's your first time hearing how something sounds, it can take a bit to familiarise yourself with it, so having a gap between two audio files where you're talking about the differences can make it harder to hear the differences because it's based on memory. Might just be me, but this video was really easy to get a feel for the differences between the sims/amp.
Can you do a great review on the engl fireball 100 amp head? Would love to hear your opinions on it
+Breac Or the 60 watt version...or any Engl. C'mon,Engl, send the man something!
I have a POD HD500X and I have to say the Revv Gen120 killed it for sure. Nothing beats true tube tone. In fact I have two tube amps, one being a 5150 modded by FJA. I still like the POD but as you all know its subjective. I use it mainly for quiet jamming through the PA but I will use it for the noise gate, and tube screamer sims for the front of the 5150 and it sounds great. It all depends on what you want it for. Excellent un-biased reviews! Keep up the good work.
Glenn will you review Pod HD500 or Pod HD Pro
Thanks
Glenn you are the ONLY honest reviewer of gear period. You are providing a valuable service. Thank you. I have a line 6 spider iii 120 which has a particularly abrasive tone that for some reason seems to be golden for my avant punk band. Haven't come close to duplicating the abrasive spider tone with any tube amp, impulses or other amps. This has forced me to actually become a much better guitarist now that I use higher end equipment, where every shitty note is magnified by the better gear. The spider jam is a cool practice amp with.a 30 minute looper built in but it is not user friendly, To each his own I suppose. Some more gear review suggestions: Peavey Revalver software and my favorite practice amp by far the Yamaha THR10X (and amazing little practice amp IMHO). Keep up the great work Glenn!
Correction :Periphery's first album used the Axe-FX Ultra.
Positive grid beat the POD and Revv hands down in my opinion. That tone was excellent! A video for it would be great. Also, do you think you can you make a video on using free 3rd party vst's like Poulin? You seem like you could make an incredible tone for free, and I for one would love to hear it. Plus, you'd be helping out thousands of diy "home recorders". Thanks Glenn!
Hey Glenn. Love your videos.👍 Mostly your attitude, man. 👌
Would you please review the Line 6 Firehawk effects pedalboard, and the Firehawk 1500 amplifier combo. Their price tags have me thinking. I mean, is this Line 6 finally nailing, or are they insane with these prices.
Maybe, compare these two products, with similar products, as you usually do in your videos. Maybe a comparison with Boss ME-80. And a Fender Mustang 5 with its pedalpoard against the 1500 watt combo. And maybe some tube amps for comparison, as well.
Just, a suggestion.😃
Thanks, man.
Can't wait for your next video.
I just bought the pedal board recently and I like it. I'm just doing bar gigs though and I'm a cheap fuck when it comes to the equipment that I let drunk people near.
I’ve been using a PODHD500X for nearly two years and I’m just now finding the best way to get "decent, workable" tones out of the unit. It’s all in the EQ effects, both in the "loop" and in front of the amp model. I haven’t tried adding IRs, but I may look into that.
When he calls out Fluff - I fucking DIED.
You're a breath of fresh air Glen.
Revv Gen 120 personally sounds the best of them all. i wanna get one in the future because of yours, jared's, and Fluff's reviews such a good sounding amp.
+KMScovers They're awesome and the new version switches down to 10 watts as well!!! Also has a smaller headshell to shed some weight. It looks snazzy!!
That's cool! they're crazy expensive though.
man, Chris can make anything sound good
Have you taken a look at the spider valve with the bogner tubes? im interested to hear your review on that piece. Maybe the tubes have been the missing element in the sound?
that'd be a cool episode. I second it.
Thanks for mentioning the first periphery album, I hadn't heard it yet but it's got some bangers on it!
Thank F for this review, I've been so close, so many times to grabbing one used. I wish more people would just grab gear and tell us whats actually worth spending our money on, instead of glossing over shit like paywalls and craptastic sound.
It's still good for digital effects in an FX loop. Costs like a couple good pedals but has much more to offer.
+Artyom Kunyov ... although Boss units are better at this job.
yes i used to use the POD HD and run it to the fx return, bypassing the cab sim. sounded reasonable enough for jamming.
I'm not one to praise Line 6 often, but it didn't sound too bad in the mix. Sure, no where NEAR the Revv or the Bias programs, but not entirely horrible either.
The best sounding youtube channel.
Also, that REV Generator sounds glorious in those riff comparisons. Such a rich mid range, the POD sounds scooped to hell and the bias has a mushiness to it where it almost sounds like the virtual cabinet can't keep up with the amp.
Periphery's first album was recorded with an axe fx ultra though. But some of the bulb demos were recorded with the pod
the snobbery reminds me of the comic book guy in simpsons
I'm using the rackmount version for FX. It's pretty great for reverb/delay/chorus
HAHAHA... nice dig on Fluff! Classic!
I've been using the Line 6 HD/HD 500 and 500X since they came out. Its not very hard dialing in tones once you understand what it is good and not good for. Also, how you set up the output in the menu and whether or not you use the input pad has radical impact on the tone. For an all in one setup that can run delays, multiple gates, Tube screamer style OD and have good general FX at the price point plus be built into a floorboard and interface with amps or studio monitors, its not so bad. I can vouch that the Peavey 5150 model on the metal pack expansion is close to worth the cost. They run sales all the time so I payed 35 to get 10 more amps or so. The gain tones are super usable, especially if you tweak with the cab and mic settings and learn what works good with what models. Ive dialed in tones, which you can hear all over my channel, that I think stand up to anything high gain Ive heard for my style and tone. Its all subjective but for a lot of bedroom players, one of these with some decent studio monitors is not bad. Also, these particular presets were not that great. The default settings on the Recto and Engl both sound loads better than this.
The HD500 is an ok unit to start out on.
This guy cracks me up every time. Well done sir.
Hey Glenn, can you review the POD HD Pro X?
+Phoenix Pagan If it has "POD" in the name, it shares the same amp sims are the rest of the PODs. The only difference is the X, which gives access to their "HD" mod packs, which aren't really any better. Just more marketing BS.
Brian Larson I disagree. I've owned both units and the HD packs sound much better, plus the Pro X is useful as an interface since it also contains a mic preamp.
I'd like to see you do a review on the Peavey Vypyr combo amp, which is kinda similar to the Line 6 Spider
Everyone has a different view on things and I respect that, but Spectre Sound makes everything he doesn't quite like look like a total pile of shit. And Line6 gear definitely isn't. I've been using PODs for years now and it never disappointed me. I'm still using my X3 Pro and it sounds awesome for what it is, great for Monuments tones. I have videos on my channel demonstrating the POD sound (HD500 in this case, without any additional package) and to me it doesn't sound bad at all.
Comparing PODs to an expensive tube head? Nah. Comparing it to a desktop plugin? Meh. I can't take my iMac to gigs and step on it to change presets.
well said, btw i can't even afford a mac, your looking at at least a grand aren't you?, so even price wise why is he comparing 2 options (bias and line 6 pod), that are in completely different ball parks. I think the guy's a dick, and is completely unable to be just a little bit objective. There should be a middle ground with reviewers where they are able to say whether they like or dislike a product, but also acknowledge its good points and why it they might appeal to others.
The trick with Pods is using a dual cab patch for high gain tones. MeAmBobbo's guide has some suggested pairings that work really, really well. YMMV, of course.
The Revv killed that shit. Like a critical strike coup de grace kill.
Although I think that there's one thing that needs to be considered here. Were there amp sims back in 2010 that were way better than the POD? I think that amp sim technology simply improved VASTLY since then and...
You know what never mind. Just checked out LePou's plugins, realized that the Le456 is from 2009 and that shit is free. Fuck Line6
+dzamija922 Not only free, but made by just one guy on his computer.
I have a Zoom G2.1Nu processor pedal and it clicks immediately with anything I use (PC, guitar setup, etc).
And for it's age, I am pretty satisfied. Got some pretty decent tones outta any preset on most amps/shows. And it's price is more than fair for what you get.
Now, if Mr Glenn would do a fearless review on this baby - i'd be a happy camper :)
Seems like you tried to make it sound bad, or whoever made and sent you those patches. I've been using hd500 for 2 years and never heard such badly dialed patches. It surely takes some time to get a desired tone and there is a huge learning curve, but once you set the unit properly, it becomes one badass piece of technology.
+DeathMetalBIH I don't know about "badass piece of technology", that might be an overstatement, but it's not as bad as the general circle jerk might lead one to believe. I agree that he didn't bother trying to dial in something usable though. He said in another comment he used someone's premade patches, but that's a pretty big cop out honestly. He's a professional sound engineer, and he can't even bother getting a tone dialed in properly himself? Not to mention his argument about not using post processing to make it sound better, like that isn't his job anyway? Nah, he wanted it to sound bad on purpose so he could post another "fearless" gear review and rip into Line 6 some more cause the general guitar community loves that shit.
+Pradeep Patel We share the same thoughts my friend.
+Pradeep Patel you're spot on dude.
Crummock iPhail no he doesnt put in processing because he wants to see how the raw amp sounds you dumb sack of shit. Also if you cannot get an amp to sound good after 15 minutes of fucking with it then it isn't very good. Your fucking stupid and need to know what the fuck he was talking about. Of course it will sound good after you fuck with it and process it. Dumb son of a bitch.
The more you swear, the more valid your point gets. I own a Pod HD500x and I swear, not once have I found a good user-made preset. Just learn your way around the unit and it wont take you more than 10 minutes to dial in a great sounding tone. Listen to Twelve Foot Ninja for example , they use the Pod HD500x exclusively.
Using the POD as a pre-amp, through a good tube amp, sounds great.
You Could propably get it to Sound greater If you use a dedicated preamp
Crucify me if you want but I actually like the view by Lou Reed Metallica purely because the part where he screems I am the table never fails to make me laugh
Great! For the first time one youtube someone is giving an honest review. Keep it up!
Hey Glen, try to review a Eleven Rack with expansion pack for guitar and bass. thanks.
Would love that
I have one, but something tells me he might like it that much because you really do have to fool around with it a bit, but once you do, your tone is amazing!
he wouldn't, because he doesn't have pro tools :D
stupid musicians killer
Neither i do, Eleven Rack uses a Standalone editor now, also, i using with my Mixer and interface, i dont record it directly
srxly? they finally get it lol
That RevVVVV Generator sounds beautiful.
Problem with pods is they sound like your litening through crappy headphones all the times.
Hey Glenn, greetings from California. Just wanna say I love your videos and think its great you use different people to help you showcase specific products. The guys you used in this video frikin rocked, and even made the line 6 hd sound palatable (untill the Rev kicked in that is)
Please please please keep making these. I'd really like to get your opinion on the orange hybrid micro heads I keep seeing kids with.
They actually are awesome for what they are. Do they compare to a 100W tube head and cab? Not at all, but they're hardy, stout little amps.
They may not be heavyweights, but they can sure throw a punch if that makes sense.
fearless gear review on mg50cfx and acoustic lead g120
I had the MG50CFX a while back. Sounded way too muffled and muddy. I've sold it and bought a Randall RG75 G3 Plus. Probably one of the better solid state amps that I've experienced.
OMG the positive grid one was amazing
but the revv was beast
I do believe Periphery was recorded with an Axe Fx Ultra
+MyPenguinsFly they did
+MyPenguinsFly it does make the pod better doesn't it?
I don't have that much knowledge on metal tones, when I first heard the POD HD by its own I didn't thought it was too bad but after listening to that Revv amp the difference was night and day. I'm so happy now to have invested on a tube amp and decent pedals instead of buying cheaper modeling stuff and multi-effects units.
the rythm stuff sounds like some made it sound bad intentionally
Love the Bad New t-shirt.......I think the two mock docs they made were great...first one was made BEFORE Spinal Tap
