About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!
It's like they had a board meeting at Line 6 and asked, "Okay, what can we do to this amp to NOT get it smashed by Glenn?"
They would've ripped the tweeter out if they did this for Glenn... Holy shit, imagine if Line 6 did that and sent him a Line 6 SMG Signature just to be dicks 😂
Cant please anyone.. ehm everyone..
@@joeyskar glen fricker signature line 6 spider would be amazing
@@joeyskar Lmao, that would be the best troll move.
Well...I guess that was literaly their aproach to deal with their new AMP. No develping, just straight out ,,How can we stop Glenn from ripping us in half, besides killing him first?" Glenn, please keep up your work and your head on your body with your teeth in your mouth.
Tool with new album
Glenn is positive about a line6 spider
What's next? Half-Life 3?
there's rumors of a new necrophagist album
@@m.ariquel shut up, everyone knows Muhammed's processors burned out beyond repair. Not even the greatest enegeers can fix that machine.
Dont do that dont give me hope
Justin Last haha what's next? A new csgo operation?
wait...
@Justin Last bullshit. It's a hoax
Glenn's nightmare band
On drums: EZdrummer
On lead vocals: autotune
On guitar: a diva playing his Squier bullet through a Spider
Bass: *bass player got lost, but left the equipment at someone else's house since he was to lazy to bring it himself* (the rig is a Epiphone EB 1 with dead strings and a Marshall code, because he didn't know it was a guitar amb)
Also none of them have learned the song, "will pay when they're rich and famous" and brought their girlfriends to the studio
I dunno man that sounds like the perfect sesh
Don't forget the tambourine player whos got substance abuse issues.
Almost perfect, but we all know the drummer doesn't have a girlfriend.
I lost you at "girlfriends".
Will have an album recorded in exchange of exposure. And must be done by next morning.
The guy at my church plays one of these. His tone is incredible! This amp rocks!
It's almost like Line 6 listened to your critiques. I love how people get so butthurt on honest reviews. Keep it real Glenn.
Brandon Thompson honest reviews make the world a better place. It means they don't have to fix what isn't broken and they can later on fox what is broken
Line 6 are a surprisingly responsive company these days - the community that sprang up around the Helix was so involved that they took advantage and pushed the customer service through that. That's now developed to the point where they're expanding it to cover other products, and...well, Spider V version 2 :)
Line 6 don't listen, that's the point. It doesn't take 3 years to develop a software on/off switch for the tweeter... and they have the fucking gall to call it 'Classic mode'.
@@variancewithin I completely agree.
@@TheLambLive Changed like that don't happen overnight especially when the product in question is in the lower end of the companies offerings. They definitely listened.
Eh, my Line 6 has worked the whole time I've been playing so I don't complain. Far better than the amp I got at Aldi for my first one lmao
Aldi the grocery store? 😂
@@ieatchips502 yes
@@ieatchips502 they regularly sell stuff unrelated to groceries, that they can get to otherwise impossibly low prices due to their economies of scale
Aldis the grocery store?
How do I get the tuner light to stop flashing ?
Holy penguin shit! Did Line 6 actually do a decent job?! What a time to be alive!!!
In their defense, the Helix Native is pretty fucking dope too
Nah, they just took 3 years to add simple features that should have been there from day one. Quite typical of Line 6.
They were always capable of it. Their cheap amps being garbage was always an effort to upsell idiots to their more expensive products. But this is a post-Katana world now, that shit isn't going to fly anymore.
The Helix Floor/LT/Rack , along with the HX Stomp and the Helix Native are some crown jewels for Line 6. Seeing them actually do something to make their Spider line less shit is nice though.
Line 6's top level products are great. Their cheap products are crap. Kinda like Marshall, Vox, Fender, Peavey, etc etc etc
I started with a squire amp, I worked hard and wanted the best sound because Glenn inspired me to get good tone and not a cheap amp, then I got a peavey 6505+ thanks glenn
Oh God Glenn! Do they have your family Hostage? Blink 3 times really fast in your next video if they do!
Glenn. Your always up front an honest. I have followed your channel since your early days. Congrats on carving such a trusted source for info! I am a line 6 fan. Always have been. Just a sentimental thing lol.
When Line 6 starts putting Helix models into the Spiders, we may actually have a killer amp here.
Yea exactly. Hey the more we talk shit the better things get. Helix is nooooo joke.
@Nobby Heads Because adding Helix models to the Spider amps costs nothing. It would give positive press and get Line 6 some of that Boss Katana money. It would also be really good for the brand. There is honestly no reason that makes business sense not to do it.
@Get Real Politics I'm talking amp models, not the whole software suite. Boss Katana runs the same amp models as their GT100 floor processor, that takes very little horsepower. Like less than a Raspberry Pi. Line 6 could have 5-10 Helix models that cover a wide variety of tones you would want and make a killer amp. Like Boss did.
I have a slight suspicion they may be using different processors
@@KidNato Are you guys under the impression that CPU power is static? CPU power grows exponentially, which means every generation grows from the previous generation. A processor coming out today might be 20% faster than the last gen one, but is 70% more powerful than the generation prior to that one. The Helix came out over 4 years ago. I'm sure that even if a cutting-edge CPU was in the original Helix, but the time the Spider would get those settings significantly more powerful CPUs would be available cheaply.
I picked up a Spider V 20 recently, because I bought a guitar while I was out of town and I wanted something to play on until I got home. This little thing is bad ass! I mean, obviously it's just a practice amp and you wouldn't use it for recording, but it's crazy versatile once you plug it into your phone or computer and start playing around with all the different effects and settings.
So line 6 spiders are like internet explorer, they get the job done, eventualy and after 20 years of loading
I used lynx browser.
I never used it to download another browser. 🤔
Spiders always got the job done. Portable, versatile and affordable practice modeling amps. They've not meant to be top of the line recording nor live amps. You don't buy a 12x 10" cabin to move between yours and your friends house to jam a couple times a week either, no?
Its insane how good it sounds in comparison to the Mark I. Also I feel that that demo song sounded a lot like A7X, anyone got the title or even just a tab cuz I really like it.
That sounds surprisingly good. I didn't like the crunch tone but everything else was pretty good. Nice job Line6
Solid state has always dominated the clean scene. If you want a clean tone and high volume, traditionally solid state was the way to go. Crunch and heavy distortion was where the tube amps shined. Not surprisingly for recording, you want a low watt tube amp and one speaker for the best crunch because that system will start breaking up at lower volume.
@@orlock20 except for fender tube amps. Those are still the kings of clean. Partially because they're almost impossible to overdrive and still have ear drums. But they're great for taking pedals for that reason too. But I'd take a fender blackface amp over a Roland jazz chorus any day. Then maybe one dya I'd get the opportunity to play a gig where I can do what SRV did and turn the volume on it to the max then stack two or more overdrive pedals into it
Great video! I have a spider v as a cheap home amp and this firmware update made such a difference. Didn't even know it existed until this video. Cheers!
Actually not that bad and holy crap Christian actually looked a bit surprised playing it. Massive improvement and this should have been fixed years ago!
2:55 Glenn turns into a 20 years old post-hardcore singer.
Sounds like Cartman to me
CAN I SCREAM
"Not horrible, but not ideal either" - y'know, I get the impression that's the full extent of the design criteria. Essentially, the best they can do with modelling built down to practice amp costs. As an all-in Helix guy, though, my one gripe is that they reused the Helix visual design for the software. I understand that they're hoping that Spider V -> Helix family is a reasonable upgrade path (particularly with the Helix Stomp at not much more than Native), but...ewww.
Oh, and nice one for not bowing to the "kill it with fire" crowd :)
I definitely get your sentiment but I think for Line 6, as a business decision it's probably just good practice to unify their UI experience (perhaps for the very rare occasion where a guy with a Helix might want to use a Spider V (lol) but mostly where a person might upgrade to a Helix from a Spider like you mentioned) - rather than having multiple UI's to manage.
@@scottydogg278 Oh, that's absolutely all it is - a sentiment. It's a totally sensible thing from their perspective.
You are absolutely right. And welcome to the world of major companies... ;)
I am by all means a beginner on understanding the quality of tone. line 6 has been great over the years. did notice a huge difference in quality that I was not experienced in the early years. picked up the 240w mkII for the new guitar to get back into it. I love the reviews you are putting out with no filter responses, thumbs up in my book!
That dude at the end may look like Kirk Hammett but he sure plays more like Marty Friedman.
Sounded Dreamtheater-ish to me
The solo reminded me of his early work. But since you mention DT, kinda sounds like them as well. Anyway, both are fine with me.
more like Stephan from obscura
"Kirk Friedman"
more like nick menza that plays guitar like marty friedman but ok
r.i.p. nick
I have a line 6 spider and it's awesome and works great
Well, your first review must have had an impact on Line6.
Especially if they had a few chats at places like NAMM. I remember when the Helix first came out Line6 was putting on a series of clinics about it. I had a fantastic chat with the rep afterwards saying how it'd be awesome to have a pedal version without the amp/cab modeling for people that may want to use it with their existing rig. A year or two later and BOOM helix HX effects. I am NOT taking credit for it at all, but I'm guessing if I was one person who mentioned it, there must have been tons in the industry who also mentioned it. So I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that they DO listen to the at least trusted industry critics.
PS, Line6, thanks for the HX Effects, it's awesome!
Kylää
Line 6 won't admit it but glenn was the best thing that happened to them in a while lol
Wow. That cleaned up much better than I expected. Here's hoping L6 drops some sort of Helix combo soon at a similar price point 'cause that would be epic!
“The sonic equivalent of chewing on aluminum foil.” Glen you are a legend. I don’t even like metal and I watch all of your videos.
Just got one of these for free, hooked it up to my 3. Kenwood MV-9D cabinets and it’s honestly not bad with all the adjustments.
8:30 Wow! Kirk Hammet's got waaay better at guitar since I saw him last. There's a bright future ahead of that boy! 😄
That Kirk Hammett should join a band 😂😂😂
Way better that St. Anger for sure 👌

Nice review! Cool that you can honestly look at a product that you previously, and justifiably hated
Glen, I love your honesty. You are the BEST.

This reaction earned my subscription!
Wait... no hammer? The video is over? My day can't possibly start this way. My God Glenn, what have you done?
he should have destroyed something else like another marshall code😂
Im not sure about all of the line 6 spiders but i know you could disable the cab sims on the spider iv and even as far back as the first pod pro rack.
Woaaaah, it actually sounds like a possible amp. Crazy. The delayed clean was actually pretty sweet.
I have an idea for another Fearless Gear Review that may interest you.
So I know you have had fun with Bugera in the past and I recently saw they make a 212 cabinet that is rated for 160 watts and 4ohm/16ohm mono and 8ohm stereo for only $230. I thought that might be an interesting piece of gear to put to the test and see if it's good for that kind of price.
The cabinet is the Bugera 212TS if you want to look at some listings of it and get specs.
There are almost no other affordable over 120wats/4ohm cabs out there so this might be good to demo for those that are in the market for more affordable cabinets that can handle amps with higher specs.
Full mix sounds really good, and not because I'm blinded by that sick performance. Or maybe I am. Damn, you guys are good!
I have just found this channel. It's great, especially the end, it's a really nice way to review products.
Actually ordered the spider 30 and somehow got sent a 240..wondering if it's worth keeping or sending back?
Great review Glenn! I have a Marshall code 100 and it works great, but then again I use it as a speaker for my laptop so I can hear the music I am playing along with LOL. I mainly use modeling amps, as a trucker it's hard to get a bunch of equipment into a semi cab lol. The amps I like are the Fender Mustang series, right now I am using the Mustang GT 200 with the 2 - 12 inch speakers. I would be curious to hear your thoughts and a possible review of this amp. I am not trying to fool myself into thinking I am playing through a 5150 lol. Philip McKnight did a review comparing the presets on the GT 100 to the actual amp it was supposed to sound like, even though it failed to pass those tests I would still like to hear a guy like you give his honest review and opinion of it. I think the reason it failed in the McKnight video was they set everything up the exact same way, same knob levels I am referring to. But 5 on the original might not be the same as the 5 on the Gt 200 see what I mean? Anyway, I thought this was a great review and yeah there will be some great butthurt of the week next video lol, you may have to do a butthurtS of the week lol. Oh, I bought a Line 6 Spider 3 I believe it was, it was the 50 amp version if I remember right. I got it used for $50 but it had only been played like 4 or 5 times, man that thing sucked! Even using it as just the speaker for my laptop it sucked!
”A very angry one trick pony!”
Oh dear lord, I’m in tears 🤣😂
Thank you for doing honest reviews on gear! You really help me out when looking at new gear! Thanks brother!!!
When you turned the tweeter off, I was genuinely shocked at how good it sounded. It’s like going from Design The Skyline to Megadeth at the press of a button
every time I hear this intro to your videos it never gets old!!!!
Just get a goddamn boss katana. End of story.
I agree with this
amen to that i have the katana 100 1x12 and the katana air love both of them even use the GT-1000 board with the katana 100 and wow thats a killer combonation
Davide Pannone I did and I love it. It even works great with my fishmans
Greatest budget amp
An affordable combo with many sounds, which are ACTUALLY DECENT, and can you can have 4 different tones at the touch of an optional foot switch.. I cannot recommend the Katana enough.
The drum track reminded me of the rev really nice. Also full mix sounded pretty good too
Last time I was this early, Glenn wasn't swearing!...
If Line 6 see this, I'm getting a spider 30 because of this review. I just need a practise amp, my gigging days are over and I just want something to mess about on and not have a thousand cables to connect up for pedals. Originally I liked the look of the orange crush range, but I have to be honest all the reviews I saw were clearly bought and paid for. Honest, trusted and trusted review are key to any industry.
I honestly think it sounded pretty great in the mix. On its own, it definitely does sound like a solid state amp. Just doesn’t have that warmth. Sounded great otherwise.
The druns on the mix were just perfect, the performance and sound👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
It really feels like a conversation was started by your previous comments here, man. For all the hate it got from fans, the brand actually paid attention and responded in a really humble way. I've always had good things to say about Line 6 as a brand, it's just the Spiders that let them down. Great wireless units, the Helix is fantastic, and the overall quality and durability is awesome. Clearly you must've been shouting loud enough for them to hear you and go "Ok, our bad. Let's sort this out and give the consumers something better", which is more than can be said about Gibson or Mesa.
+1 for freedom of speech!
I prefer this style of video editing Glen! Lots of new styles new looks and catchy transition with your classic funny narrative presentation.. Keep it up!
Gz for managing to keep the review that objective, even when it's about the successor of Mark 1. Or maybe you were just positively surprised because of the extra negative expectations about the successor of Mark 1? Like neutral feels positive when expecting worse.
Two of my kids are taking guitar lessons. I have a little Marshall CD15(I think), which is bare-bones and "gets the job done" if you front-end it with something good, but even so, the little 8" speaker doesn't reproduce well enough for anything beyond practice. This item sounds like it might be a good starter model that's good enough for home and to lug to school for club. I don't see it having enough to really keep up in a band environment. I'll keep it in mind as an option.
2:15 Well, that's two minutes of my life i'm never getting back...
great to see E.T. fingers playing guitar for you again
the band mix song was one of my favorite you have done, proggy Mastodonish
cymbals were near inaudible (though headphones)
Wait was that a usable sound that came out of a spider?
Am... am I dead?
Best review I found, subscribed 🤜🤛
I've been keeping quet about owning one... probley still will. But I'm a drummer not a guitarist. I only mess about with guitars.
the durham biker I've still got mine , brought fifteen years ago when I didn't know better. Oh it was replaced long ago by the trusty, Vox 30 and a mess of pedals but I still keep the spider in the lounge room for when I just want to chug a riff and can't be fucked going into the studio. I wouldn't dare take the thing on stage or studio but it's fine for shitty strumming
My first rea amp was a spider 2. After 15 years I'm finally upgrading. I might get a v mk2.
Awesome review! I love that you keep it honest! I have this amp and it has been so much better since I’ve installed the update! By the way, that full metal mix is BAD ASS! It honestly sounds like a bonus track that could have made the Diamonds In The Rough/Live in the LBC Avenged Sevenfold CD. Sounds awesome!!
How did you install the update?
Thanks Patreons! I wanted the hammer, but was glad to hear that Line6 isn't a joke anymore.
I'M STILL WAITING ON THE SUNN BETA LEAD REVIEW FOR YEARS!
Glen Fricker your awesome, my Line 6 Spider 120 sounds like a million bucks since the new firmware! I do record with it now, been recording since the red bean POD lol You should review the Amplify amps I can’t get a good sound out of it like the Spider amps. Thanks for your honesty review.
“Next time before commenting, please take your tampon out”.
I love you Glen, I really do.
The 240 combo is loud AF and is easy to lug around.
I agree, “classic mode” (tweeter off) is a game changer. I love the Spider V 60 mk ii.
Enjoyed the video. I never met a guitarist playing a Line 6 Spider in a professional studio environment.
What's the name of the song used for the Full Mix Demo? It was killer!
Quincy Kane Morris glad you liked the demo track! John and I are likely going to turn some of these into songs for release
I soooooo wanted to see the hammer of truth. Has Glenn reviewed a Fender BassBreaker yet? I love that amp.
My old amp was fading out with sound either by bluetooth or wired so glad i got mine for 115 which not a bad deal overall love the video brotha
I'm offended by you not destroying the amp! 😂
one good thing about smeared distortion is it makes the drum transients shine more, not bad though, your mixes are getting better, then again with line 6 you have to get better
Miked vs Mic'd. Mike = guys name. Mic = device used to capture sound
"Miked" could possibly be a tone mod for the amp. most likely conceived by a dude named Mike.
Christian's clean playing was delightful, and that PRS is just a dream to look at... Jelly.
It’s 11pm and I have my chemistry lab report due tomorrow, but this is more important
Glad you’ve got your priorities straight!
Honestly it would probably be a good choice for an amp IF it had a 12in speaker. I guess I would be okay for bedroom levels now. Glad they improved it a lot, I would probably still go with the boss katana though.
The best Line 6 was the Spider Bognor. I still have mine!
I play in a classic rock band. My #1 guitar is a Les Paul Slash Anaconda through a Mesa Express Plus 1x12 with extension cab. Sounds great! With a ban on Russian imports that include amp tubes I wanted to be proactive so purchased a Line 6 Spider V 240 HC. I brought it at jam session tonight and all I can say is wow. Playing it through a 2x12 V30 cabinet. Vids like this would convince you not to purchase this great amp. I believe you’re not able to accept that solid state amps can and do sound as well as or better than tube amps. When I got home, I actually hugged my Spider V. Great sound, great versatility and no tube fuss. I will keep my Mesa because Mesa is in my heart but this Spider V will be my go to amp.
Sounds like you get a lot of abusive comments from chipmunks on mandrax ;-)
Not that I know what mandrax is.... or chipmunks... :-o
Mandrax yeah
@@harveyterry6418 I was making a funny comment referring to my 80's drug addictions.. I do not endorse them
If you are on mandy's ... seek help
a friend of mine took too many Mandy;'s and cut his own hand of with a bowie knife
If you know how to use a drill and a soldering iron, adding a speaker out to this thing is easy and pretty much any external guitar cab is an incredible improvement of this thing. So much in fact, I'm considering to either turn mine into a mini amp head or to build a frankenamp with a Spider V and the Spider Valve's (the other Line 6 amp that Glenn didn't destroy) tube power stage.
This guy sounds exactly like Penn Jillette.
Penn’s evil twin!
Subscribed for saving me a lengthy return process thanks to that damn sneaky tweeter
that demo song sounds so much like A7X \m/
i know right, but they sounds a little bit more progressive.. kinda what if Synyster Gates inspired by John Petrucci
Exactly my thoughts. A tad bit different style but it does sound like A7X at some points.
Owned the 60w version for 3 years. Best practice am0/pedal I've owned
I always laugh when metalheads try to test their "clean" sound with chords, they try so hard to remember other than power chords.
Ehh not really. A lot of metal revolves around chords and knowledge of music. How about doing some research before being a prick
As a "bedroom" guitarist and somone on a budget who dosent wanna spend money out his bum on effects, cabinets, this or that. This is everything I need to satisfy my guitar needs. Great review by the way, I had a spider 3 15W that finally died after 16yrs , it's just a speaker now but it did what I needed. Great review!
Hope to see the Yamaha EAD-10 on thecnext fearless gear review.
Who is the dude who did the demo song? I really dig it, I'd buy that record!
mootbooxle glad you liked our demo song! John and I are likely going to turn some of them into songs for release.
Strata Recording I subbed to your channel, great talent!
Yeah... I guess it is not politically correct to say in the video, so just get a boss katana 50 and be done with it :)
100*. The 50 doesn't have an FX loop.
@@LoftySkinner I don't need a loop.
The only thing I've ever used the effects loop for was using it as line out to run into another amp and get double volume, I've never liked the sounds of the effects in the so called effects loop, ever !
Just about ad honest as you can be with a review. Glad you gave this one a chance so we can see that Line 6 seemed to listen to you. Awesome as always man.
I will always be a proponent of the Spider series of amps. I've owned a III 75w, a IV 75w, and a IV 30w, they were not amazing sounding amps but I've heard the line has only improved, but as someone who just played in their bedroom, they all had every sound and feature I would ever want, I still plug into my IV 75w from time to time just when I want to hear some nasty high gain. They are so cheap too, I will always recommend used Spiders for new players who need an amp that can do all kinds of sounds.
Nice Kiesel and great playing and sweeps
Nice picture, in the end, of you with your 29 fret Washburn.
Did you ever have the 36 feet model?
I have a Mark 3 and it’s fine. The biggest issue is applying wet to dry signal for the effects
So in terms of utter uselessness and horridly bad gain tones I completely agree Glen. I myself have a line 6 spider 2 2x12 combo, and I stay clear away from anything but the clean channel. For my main gain tones are use the preamp section of a BOSS ME-80; using the amp as more of a pedal platform. Thoughts on this?
I did a Primus Tribute and actually used a firehawk into the front of my 3 channel Dual Recto. The recto just wasn't getting the tone I needed, but the Firehawk just about nailed it.
The line 6 stuff is pretty decent if you know how to dial it in, saved me from buying a shit-ton of pedals when I don't normally use many effects on my own stuff
Years ago I used to have an Ibanez TBX150R combo amp, never been able to find another and I hella regret selling it, one of the best combo amps I’ve played
