  • So now that the Line 6 Pod Go is out, it seems a fitting question. How much have they really improved the pod line over all 4 generations of POD products? In this video, I'm going to talk about the history, playthrough a unit from each generation, and OF COURSE there is a shootout at the end!

@@InTheSh8 cab sim off, and a good cab? How complicated are your signal chains? I do not have a mooer modeler besides a preamp pedal. It sounds good but i prefer my tone on the pod hd500x vs my mooer prwamp pedal (the brown sound 3(5153). I'm using the fx return of a joyo zombie to power them. I'm boosting them with a precision drive.

@@AaronMorgan666 With the Mooer Flux150G Extended I tried to put several of my favorite IRs, but still SHYTE! Good that I didn't buy it and just swapped it against a preamp that I didn't like either. I don't like complex chains. Right now I use an AMT K2 pedal boosted with a Behringer TO800 into audio interface and NadIR. That Mojer GFlux15 "lives" somewhere in a filthy corner of my house, haha! Really, it's shyte, sounds like an amp with a wah, every preset.

    • @AaronMorgan666

@@InTheSh8 I'd get a new boost if you can. Doesn't have to be the precision drive but maybe the earthquake devices plumes or the joyo overdrive. I've been debating on replacing my precision drive with either an airis effects boost or the plumes. The plumes is only $100 but the airis effects boosts are like $220 and higher

Great job on this video. Probably the best comparison video I've seen on RUclips. I've owned POD products for years and you're exactly right. The stock IRs is what hurt them until recently. I always ended up using the POD or PODHD into an amp and cabinet using the FX return and used the POD for a pre-amp and effects. I run it through a pair of Marshalls and delay one side 20ms. It's a very nice stereo effect.

A really well-made video! Really enjoyed it!
I got a POD X3 Live a few years back for not much money, and have loved it ever since! I got mine mainly because it's great for the early Tesseract and Monuments tones, but it does so many other things great as well. It's really versatile for both live and especially the studio, and is much more flexible than the HD series IMHO.
And with a good IR, I think it can still hold its own today!

Love this review! I'm still on X3 Pro, still happy with it but the one thing that would entice me to upgrade is sonic quality. It's a bit difficult for me to hear the differences until toward the end when he strings them up one after another...WOW! Now I'm contemplating moving to their latest generation. Just keep in mind this is testing the sound for only one genre of music. One of the things I love about all of the PODs is the versatility. In a set I have to go from full-out heavy to a ballad and many tones in between and the POD X3 does it for me superbly. I spent quite a bit of time programming and dialing in all the tones I needed but after that, smooth sailing!

Wow! This is a fantastic explanation of Line 6 origins and background info. Most Excellent! I got Pod Go a while back and (like you) have a number of previous Line 6 hardware items (GuitarPort, TonePort UX2, TonePort UX10, Spider IV 150 w/ (upgraded Eminence 2X12" speakers). So far, I've been really impressed w/ Pod Go. I don't necessarily love EVERYTHING about it (footpedal could be better) - but it's mostly GREAT otherwise! Seems to deliver a wide variety of tones and textures for ALL types of music! Always loved this company and happy to see they've still got (at least) most of their MOJO from the last 2 decades of cutting-edge audio technology.

This is a great informative and cool video. (Grindage, LOL!) X3 and HD Pro are kool but I really do like the gigging capable layout of the Pod Go as it's really an all in one ready to (PodGo) unit. I'm ready to pull the trigger on one of these. Coming from an old broken Boss GT6 (yes 6!) This will be my 1st Pod product. It seems to have everything I need (except the dual amp capability.) it should be quite an ear popping experience. IR comparison at the end was awesome!

Lets say I Had a love hate relationship with it .... loved all the options, but hated how the amp sounded like it's stuffed under 50 blankets 😑. I ended up selling it a year later for 300 bucks and bought a peavey valve king . Started my love for tube amps. Anyhow, it's been 15 years or so and I just got turned onto the pod go ! Doood! Insanely happy with it for a on the run rig. Has some glitches but I'm more than happy with it.

Growing up, my first and only amp was a Line 6 Flextone II...essentially the POD 2.0 tech in an amp body. I owe the versatility and variety of sounds on that thing to a lot of my early excitement for the guitar. Fast forward 12 years, and after messing with “real” amps for a short time, I’ve got the POD Go and honestly, am pretty happy with that as my main rig

I bought one of the last X3Pro's when the HDPro had already come out. I still use it, but about two years ago I put a Mooer Cab X2 - IR-Loader into the FX-Loop of the X3Pro. I don't use any other effects in the loop, so I can program to either use the built in IRs, which I do for clean tones or, for my heavy distorted tones I run through some "Mesa Oversized V30" IRs. As the Mooer Cab X2 is stereo/2-channel, I put one center-cone mic'd and one edge mic'd IR in the two channels. So when I send the two main XLR outs of the X3Pro directly to FOH, the sound guy can mix the two channels as needed, similar to moving the mic in front of the cab.
I also have a 200W mono class-D Amp in the back of my rack to drive a 4x12 cab, which gets a mix of the two channels.
And yes, I compared with and without the IR-loader into the class-D and the 4x12, and I prefer it with the IRs.

    Great demo.
The POD Go sounds much much better to me. I had one of the POD red rack effects. I just used it to practice and I don't remember what amps I used. Believe it or not digi tech I thought back in the day had the best modeler at the time. Today AxeFx is killer and I love it, but don't own it. Kemper too, but I am playing thru a Katana mk2 and love it with the fine studio once I adjusted parametric eq and got rid of the 800mhz and 8kz and I changed the air, etc. It rocks and has all the sounds I need and I change everything with a foot switch. Great review sir.
Dig that Ibanez S series. I have an old SV that I holoflashed that is killer!.
I need a good harmonizer to get that Sfeve Vai crossroads lead tone now!!!

Excellent comparison and indeed, the biggest problem with the Line 6 products are the included IR/cabs. I also think the overdrive and distortion pedals are a bit meh...
A year ago I bought the Mooer Radar pedal and I run it with my Pod HD500 in the FX Loop. Loaded with the Bogren or Mendel IR it sounds really good.
You can get a used HD500 for a really good price and if you load it with a IR pedal/loader you’ve a solid piece of gear for gigs or recording.

The Gain Boost on the 2.0 doesn't really act like a pedal. It just adds more distortion. Add a proper Tube Screamer to the chain and the POD 2.0 metal tones start to come alive. Especially if you can find the old Deftones and Fear Factory patches.

Great overview. I sometimes feel bad for Spider owners who are constantly being told that their amp is crap. If you're using it as a practice bedroom amp, who cares? But I've seen people gig with them, and well, they're terrible at high volumes. I did a video where I put a Floor Pod Go through an IR file in the HX Stomp (and nothing else) and it made the Floor Pod sound pretty good! So old Pod plus new IR = not bad, but you're better off getting the Pod Go IMHO.

The POD range was definitely a pretty revolutionary step in modeling and the PODgo is a device that I honestly want to get my hands on. The Achilles heel is definitely the cab emulation, as you've said, but with the third party IRs, the sound of these units really comes to life. I was honestly pretty surprised at how much better even the pod 2.0 sounded with custom IRs.

Nice video, well done! Putting aside how it feels for the person playing, I think if you made a blind comparison of all of these units with a good IR in a mix, people's preference would come down to how well it was eq'd for the mix, and not the specific generation of POD. Even though there are definitely differences in quality been each gen, I think we crossed the point where most people can hear those differences in a mix yeeeears ago. Even in this vid, though I know the GO is superior, I preferred other ones in the mix because they were just eq'd better for it. Generational improvements now matter only to the person playing, IMUO (in my useless opinion!) ;)

I have been a pod user going all the way back to the original bean. I agree fully that the cab IR's is where every generation has suffered. That being said while I still use mainly IR's with my Helix i must say the stock IR's while not perfect are lightyears better than they used to be. I have a few custom patches I have made that use stock cabs and they sound great. The secret I find in using stock cabs with the Helix is really taking time to take time and really edit the cab settings. That being said while I can usually get a great tone with stock cabs it's a lot easier to just load in great 3rd party IR a get instant great tone.

    • @TaylorDanley

I picked up a Pod Go back in September to replace my 10-year-old Floor Pod Plus. I had generally gone ampless over the past few years, using the Floor Pod live and in the studio, after getting tired of dragging a half stack or my Evil Twin around. If I want to run FOH and a speaker cab I run the Pod Go into my Evil Twin (as a powered cab). The Pod Go gives me all the horsepower I need for shows or recording, with more amp/cab choices than I would ever need, plus I can add IR's if I need more. The biggest complaint I've heard in reviews is a lack of routing options but I don't need to run complicated signal paths. Is the Pod Go a Boogie Triple Crown? Nope. Does it offer killer tones for 1/4 of the price of a Helix or Kemper? Yep. If you like spending tons of money and spending all day programming get one of those. If you want killer tone and simplicity, get a Pod Go.
Thanks for the video and all the best from the Bay Area!

I’ve owned the Pod X3 Live and last week got the Pod Go. I’ve also used a Flextone and Flextone 3, as well as the Podx2 and the Pod HD. I was much more of a tone snob back when I tried out the others. My first real venture into the Line6 was the Pod x3 live. It was pretty easy to navigate and for the most part made good classic rock tones. I also made acoustic presets that were nice to use. It had a microphone input and was a decent vocal processor. I enjoyed using the Dual amp simulation because it really filled out the sound. My only issue with it was this high frequency hiss I could hear. But once I was in n a mix I never noticed it. It also felt like if I were bending string the strings sounded like the wave formed were boxy somehow. I can’t really explain it other than it was boxy. If I played normal it was fine.
My Pod Go I have only had a few hours of play time with it but I already love it better than any other digital processor I’ve owned. It sounds fantastic. My only complaint is it’s a little more complicated with the learning curve. I’ve had to to watch more videos on how to use this device than I care to admit.

In the mix with the custom IR the bean sounds shit-hot and the Go sounds a bit boxy, but I'm sure the definition is probably much better. All about the mix for sound quality. I'm just now selling an XT that I've had for a couple of years as I tried to get back into guitar (I've favoured bass for most of the past 2 decades) and this week I just got an HX Stomp. I can't explain how but it definitely sounds better in general. I'm not sure what it is about it - it could be a lot of placebo, but it definitely makes playing the instrument more fun, which is worth all of the money.
Then again I also just changed my strings for the first time in a 2 months, so which is the biggest factor here?
