I have one of these in my home studio rack. Even though I also have Helix and Kemper units that are newer and sound great, I’m always happy every time I play thru the HD Pro. There’s something about the way that the stereo delays sit in the mix with this unit that is better than the Kemper or the helix in my opinion. I also love the computer editing software on it. It’s my favorite UI, and the dual amp tones are excellent.
I think this video and a lot of your others drive a very important point home, which is even if newer, more advanced gear continues to come out, it's not a reason to get rid of what you may already have, if you can use your own IRs. The cabinet/speaker/mic combination is what makes or breaks the tone and how you get there is truly up to the end user
Hey nice to see the pod alive. I personally use the pod hd bean connected to my ThR 10 X. And gives me some sick tones, actually is no need of new gear for me. I like to record metal so the rest of the job is made on reaper.
I've upgraded my HD Pro with custom impulses on an external IR loader. Yes, the internal IRs are crap compared to what you can get on the market. Huge upgrade!
Getting one of these for $150 in great condition, this is awesome to know and making my investment even more awesome! I don’t have the money for newer gear and this has always been on my bucket list of pieces of gear to own. I’m excited
Lol so after this vid I bought one of these for like $200, threw the metal pack in, and attached my x2 cab and this sits below my computer monitors for small jam sessions when I need a break. More convenient format than my old POD2.0 mini pedalboard with a DemonFx Precision OD and Mooer Radar. Plus I can use my footswitch from my damaged Spider IV with this unit. Glad to put it to use.
Thanks for this video!! Regardless of all the negative talk about the HD Pro X from some people, I've never had a problem with it and haven't had a reason or desire move on to something else. I have it loaded with the HD Metal Pack and use a BBE 882i Sonic Maximizer, so as far as I'm concerned I'm all set. -- That said, this cabinet sim pedal sure does add some life to the thing! So... Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! 👍👍
I really enjoyed watching this and see what you were able to do with this combo. I have a question I hope you can help me with if I wanted to use a mini pedal to select a preset on the pod, is there a way that that preset would recognize the IR or would I have to manually adjust the IR in a life situation.
I still have my X3 Pro and Floor Pod, still sound kickass to this day, I think to get the best out of them through an amp is to turn off cab simulation and boost with a tubescreamer or a model of one, sounds huge even to this day. If fizz is bothering you then nuke the higher end with the EQ. Love old Pods 😂
So you could also send one signal path like you did to one cab and another to the other cab and aswell as being able to blend them you could use the Cab X2 as a sort of channel switcher if you wanted?
Sick! So to get a left cab and right cab mix happening I can just run my setup in a single mono and then stereo out to my audio interface? And then set the cabs up in the software or on the pedal it I can remember them on the dial?
This is definitely the best solution, as the effects and preamps are good. I think it was the power amp sim the destroyed the HD series. It sounded like a badly biased power amp that needed repair. The power amp sim is turned off when you turn off the cab sim, that’s why people blame the cabs, but really it technically sounds like a malfunctioning power amp section. Using EQ is a terrible bandaid to the problem, as the problem still leaks through. Line6 should have stepped up and released an update, but ego got in the way and they remained silent, sometimes using users to attack others, whenever asked about it, waiting for it to disappear when HX was released. Sadly the culture of not addressing issues and bad ears follows them to this day. Too bad, as their previous effects and gear were great.
Would you happen to have tips on how to connect an IR loader pedal to the HeadRush MX5? Similar to what you did here? I have IRs loaded on the Boss IR 200. Since that pedal is not an effects processor I’d like to figure out how to connect it to the MX5 for effects. As always thanks for your tips and options. Very good info on your channel
Does it have an effects loop? You could 4 cable method it to the mx5, that way you could place effects after the IR. If not you’ll just have to go output of mx5 to input of IR200. Sorry not familiar with that one!
The cabs in the X3 aren't anything to write home about either. Running it through a Two Notes CABM helps that SIGNIFICANTLY. I don't know if this is the same but I have a Mooer Radar and if you want to save 3rd party IRs to it, you have to overwrite the stock ones, otherwise there are only about 10-12 'user' slots to store some.
I think the xt bean was the first modeler I ever owned, and I revisited it a while back. Still awesome. I was actually kind of bummed out when I got the pod hd because it felt like so much was missing from the xt by comparison.
@@TaylorDanley Kind of why I took a pass on 'upgrading' to the HD. The X3 has SO many decent 'high gain' amps in it compared to the meager offerings in the HD, I just didn't feel like it would have been worth it. And according to a lot of the reviews at the time, it wouldn't have been .. lol..
Hi, im just now getting into cam sims and IRs. Can this be used alone at the end of a signal chain to run direct? For example, guitar>OD>reverb>CabX2? Thanks! Great video btw!
After having the Main Board on my HDX Pro soil the bed and Line 6 quoting over $300 to fix it, the most expensive Line 6 gear I am willing to invest in was found on a garage sale table over the summer.
I picked up the mooer radar for this reason. I do have a kemper but I also have a pod hd500x that suffers from bad cab sims. I figured hey, $100 pedal will give this unit a sick face lift. Especially since I can load my own IR’s!!!
Would you recommend this or another IR pedal to revive my current POD HD500X or recommend just making the jump to a POD GO, Hotone Ampero's or HX Effects/Stomps? Given I am not currently gigging much.
Hi, I really like your videos, I came by on them by accident. I really like the idea of reviving my old 500x with cab sims. I watched both of your videos and I’m wondering which one you think would better : joyo cab box or mooer cab x2?
The hd pro x is about 30 on reverb I might just buy another one! Owned a half stack and power amp with mine and it sounds amazing without IRS, at the time I didn't know about IRs but for 300 for a decent sound amp sim out the box and throw on some bogren digital IRs this thing will scream!
Great video but man that POD HD sound is unbearable yet I see that it might work in a rehearsal or gig as backup. However the idea of reviving old hardware using custom IR & probably an additional power amp might be a great idea. Could you try stuff like Digitech 2120 or 2112 or maybe some old effects from Roland like the GP16?
@@TaylorDanley Used to own an HD500 it was a nice unit but didn't feel like a big leap forward when it came to high gain sounds in comparison to the previous POD XT. There is a certain fizziness that personally couldn't get used to. Would have thought that an IR would make a difference but doesn't seem to be the case here
@@celestialode it’s defective power amp modeling that’s causing the problem. Turn off the cab sim, which turns off the power amp sim, and use external IRs or run it to an external power amp and cab. It will sound much better, as the preamps and effects are good.

I found myself stopping and rewinding the video too many times. You need to slow down and get off the caffeine 🙂 Good work !!
Thanks for the video! I had the same question about the power amp sim and ended up reading a blog entry on the Laney blog page with the title „cab sim vs. IR“. Long story short IRs seem to be the more complex kind of files that include power amp and room information etc. whereas cab sim is a slimmed version just related to the cab. That would explain why you can switch of the Mooer‘s cab sim and still benefit from the the pedal‘s … well… power amp sim content if you will. Does that make sense? I‘m still guessing about that stuff. If my comment is misleading or simply wrong just delete it😊
