@@or9422 While it may feel a bit out of place for these rugged slaves to curse using the word storm, it kind of makes sense for the book. While the word storm has no negative association to us, we have to member that in the context of the book, it would kind of make sense for people to use the term in a negative connotation. It's an overwhelming force that has been destroying everything in its path for years and their entire lives are structured around this entity so it would make sense that their vocabulary is too. As a side note, Brandon is not writing grim-dark and has put in real effort to keep the books accessible to audiences of all ages and cultures, which is why he is so popular in my opinion.

One of my favorite things about Kaladin that you didn't touch on in this video is the fact that Kaladin suffers from depression. And it's not something that he just developed after all the death and suffering he's endured. In one of his early flash backs it's shown that it's something he dealt with even as a child. And it never goes away, it's just a part of who he is. His arc isn't about getting over his depression and living a happy fulling life, it's about managing it and not letting it control him. It is truly inspiring to see him do all the incredible things that he does for bridge four in spite of his depression, not because he no longer feels it. Seeing him constantly wrestle with it, even in the newest book, is what makes him one of the best characters in fantasy, in my humble opinion.

Brandon Sanderson is amazing in his ability to write mental illness into his series in such an organic and believable way. It never feels like the character is the Token Mental Health Issue, and it's never just about, "Hey, look at me, my only defining characteristic is I have anxiety!" No magic cures to make people "better" just the reality of living with it.

Kaladin is a favorite of mine since he's the type that who you wanted to shout "Come on get up, Kaladin!" and then when he does, he does it magnificently. He's beaten, bruised, and mentally slapped that it's so awesome seeing grab his depression by the throat and does what needs to be done.

The thing about Kaladin is he would never truly believe it. He’s broken, afraid, uncertain, and indecisive. But, at his core he truly cares about everyone... but himself. He rushes into danger because he’d rather die than see someone he cares for die. It’s a form of passively seeking death... suicide. He thinks about it a lot, he wants to stop hurting. He is a perfect protector because everyone means more than he does... in his own mind.
He would never believe anyone truly cares for him, or that he has value, because he doesn’t believe it of himself. He views his value as being able to take another’s place on ‘the death line’, so to speak.
And that’s the saddest thing ever. Noble, yes. Honorable, yes. But, suicidal, too. He seeks death. But, he wants others to live, and so he must live to protect those he cares about. That’s how he channels his depression. He doesn’t face it (yet), he just puts it to use. Each new Idea forces him to realize that his life has value. I wouldn’t be surprised if the next Idea he swears is to see his own value, and seek his own life before he dies the reckless death he’s seeking.

He doesn't immediately excel as a soldier. I wasn't until he watched his little brother die that he gained the motivation to train, train, train...to ensure that he could protect those he cares about. This was the first failure in a litany of failures to protect those that he cares for which compounds his depression after becoming a slave.
He doesn't necessarilly become heqled from taking in stormlight during his highstorm judgement. He may have taken in a little, but not enough to truky notice. Syl is the one who wards off the worst of the storm, and Kalladin doesn't come out the other end unscathed. He is a bloody mess, but when he opens his eyes it was like "Daaayumm!" It actually takes a bit of time for Teft to heal him bit by bit without Kalladin or anyone else knowing by feeding him small bits of infused stormlight.
You also didn't mention the training Kalladin gave or his amazing ability with the spear, specifically.
All in all, you did the character analysis true. The character development in this book is amazing, and including everything would be damned tough. Enjoyed it for sure, and hope to see a continuation as the series progresses!

You're not wrong, but he was definitely gifted which we can see from his first fight in hearthstone. He is a natural fighter. What I think many forget is that Tien died WEEKS in to joining the army. Kaladin wasn't fully fully trained at that point in the story.

I started reading The Way of Kings about a month ago and obviously, I still haven’t finished it; I had a bit of a rocky start at first( kind of like I did with The Final Empire) but I grew to love Shallan and Kaladin to bits. When Dalinar, Adolin, Renarin, Sadeas and Elhokar are introduced, I was genuinely angry as I didn’t get to see Shallan for what was pretty much another 300 pages. Yet I grew to love Dalinar and everyone else too and the moment that Dalinar and Adolin fought in that highprince’s map room ( I think that was it, I can’t remember) I hated myself for understanding and agreeing with Adolin, despite what we saw when Dalinar went into one of his fits. I’m currently on part 3 and I have had a bit of the book spoiled about what Amaram did to Kaladin ( don’t spoil anything, but I really want Kaladin to get a sharblade and use it on him, just to watch his eyes burn) so I’m going to stop watching; but my point, in this extremely long winded paragraph is that I finally decided to get into The Final Empire and the rest of Mistborn along with The Stormlight Archive thanks to you Daniel. I love them both to bits and now Brandon is rivalling against my favourite author. Thanks!

your videos literally make me want to read fantasy. i've always had a passing interest in the genre, due to scope and how "epic" (for lack of a better word) the language can be, for some of the better writers out there. but due to way too many tropes leaving a bad taste in my mouth, whether by overuse or just disgusting he-man-woman-hating misogyny and the like (or a combination therein), plus the fact that i never vibed with medieval history or the like (and i know Wheel of Time is not a medieval analogue, but once you find yourself exposed to a certain overarching trope.. it's hard to see outside of that), and you have a pretty severe reticence toward fantasy.
now, i have bought several fantasy books (2 of the currently 3 Stormlight books; 2 of the currently 2 Kvothe books) in an effort to force myself to get into the genre: i paid money for them, and now i have an obligation to at least browse through them, right? so there you go. i bought them; i should read them. i HAVE been reading Stackpole's DragonCrown War series, which is interesting enough, and not really that difficult a read.
and that's been the rub: there's so much intrigue, imagination, and scope, but it's always felt a little too difficult. i'm not sure entirely what it is, whether it's the level of detail/description, the types of weaponry, armor, buildings, being that they're so far removed from their current counterparts, or some degree of a combination of all of these (probably the latter). plus, perspective shifts, figuring out where people are in terms of space/depth relationship to one another and their surroundings. but it always has felt like too much is going on at once, even in the scenes where there's a lot of downtime between battles or whatever.
TFL;DFR: fantasy and scifi are hard, but you're making this whole thing a little more accessible to me, and i am feeling the encourgement needed to go back and try again.
    so thank you for that.

You should do some character examinations of Lightbringer characters. Your always saying how good the characterization is in that series. I'd also love for you to do some kind of spoiler video for Oathbringer.

Kaladin is probably my favorite fictional character ever. However, i'd probably say Dalinar is the "main" character in the Stormlight Archive (even though technically all ten flashback/focus characters are the main characters) because he has the plotline that touchest the most major points in the series, both plot-wise and theme-wise.

Kaladin is a badass character and very likeable , some of the decisions made with his arc though I don’t agree with. Tiens death was a bit abrupt, we knew it happens but the way it happened could have been more interesting and heartbreaking. His messiah arc is a bit forced as well, he’s a hero through and through who is depressed but that’s about it . I hope he has some serious struggles in the rest of the series ( I’m halfway through oathbringer) to overcome, that being said I love this serious beyond belief

Hmm... I thought Kal became a great solider because his brother died after only a few months in the army and Kal felt awful that he couldn't save him. So I though he them threw himself into training...then he gets promoted and looks after young boys.
I love Syl too. She's my favorite!!

      SPOILER ALERT!
I am curious as to how you see his character. I liked the moral conflict and thought it fit what was established. What makes you think it would have been more in character for him to go the other way? Not saying you're wrong at all, just legit interested.

For spoiler reasons I have deleted ALL my other comments. This video does NOT do him, Kaladin, justice. Daniel talked about a few important points, but Kaladin, and the WHOLE Stormlight Archive Series, is so much more. There are TOO MANY things, he did not mention in THIS VIDEO! Please read the series for yourself. You will realize, there is more to this story.

  • @notchbeard9007

The odd part is that I find Kaladin to be one of the best written, real characters I have ever read and yet I find him the least interesting character in the books because of it. Literally if it wasn't for Syl being the most enigmatic and knowledgeable thing in the whole of the books on top of being the cutest sidekick ever I would just hit the skip button on re-listens. His depression, apathy, loss, naivete and internal monologues can just be grating to read, like I just want to shake him sometimes lol. I know, I know bring on the hate Kaladin lovers.
