I actually fell in love with him in “Always”. Didn’t know him before that movie. The guy has an incredible charm and is a gentleman. Great natural acting skills.
I fell in love with Richard Dreyfuss after seeing his bravura performance in The Goodbye Girl....he is the genuine article , i have watched him thru the years and have always admired his skills as a fine actor.
I LOVE the way Sylvester Stallone presented the award! A lot of people thought Richard Burton would win, however Richard Dreyfuss was amazing in The Goodbye Girl. Burton should have gotten an honorary award. I do believe Richard Dreyfuss deserved to win.
He's been much better in other films; in The Goodbye Girl he was playing a version of himself and so it's hardly a performance but then most film stars play versions of themselves.
I just got done watching Goodbye Girl for the first time in years... it was one of my late mother's favorite movies and we would watch it every Saturday when I was a kid. Of course, the screenplay makes a little bit more sense to me now as an adult, it was almost like watching it for the first time. Richard Dreyfuss was amazing in this film, as was Marsha Mason. The ending had me in a tear or two while watching it just now because all I could think about was my mother, who passed away five months ago, but a beautiful memory nonetheless.
Recently saw an interview where he discusses his life as a bipolar person with dyslexia for whom numbers are just squiggles and make no sense. He has only read twelve books in his life because one teacher forced him to do so. Look what he gave us and all that he accomplished.
Totally deserved. Goodbye Girl is just as brilliant now, 35 years later. When Marsha is clutching his guitar in the rain, yelling "I love you!" and Richard yells, "Never mind that ! You're rusting my guitar!" and the brilliant David Gates starts singing the theme song.... does it get any better than that ? (I will say this, Marsha also should have won the Oscar. She got the Golden Globe though, and the BAFTA.) Love you Richard ++++++ Peace.
One of the best performances ever and I too love this ending scene. May I add that the rain and old school lights of the coffee shop as they are running the credits and playing the song adds a wonderful New York vibe.
I had no idea he won an Oscar for that movie! So glad as it has been a favorite of mine for years. Marsha Mason deserves an Oscar as well. She was phenomenal!
I just watched "The Goodbye Girl" tonight for the very first time! Great performances by Dreyfuss, Mason and Cummings. I was a kid when this first came out, and I remember always seeing the scene of Dreyfuss pulling Mason's panties off of the shower curtain rod. After all these years it was nice to finally see what everyone was going to the movies to see back in 1977! The title song also brought back memories of hearing it on the radio back in the day.
at 1:00 he looks like he trying not to trip up those steps. LOL he was so cute back then, and he deserved that oscar. he should have won for 'mr. hollands opus' when he was nominated in the 90's too.
If you are referring in particular to American movies, I think it's virtually indisputable. The 70s were a decade when America took a good hard look at itself after the turbulent 60s. The reality it saw was reflected in film. But that reality was too much for us to bear, and we decided once again to escape from it. We had the 80s - an atrocious decade for American cinema - and haven't looked back from it since. Now, if you're referring to world cinema, I'd say 50s were the greatest.
The 70s was the decade of auteur film directors, the time when Hollywood film making was at its most creative and free from the studio system. It's a pity it was followed by the cynicism of the 80s.
Am I the only one who believe his performance in Close Encounters was equally strong if not better than The Goodbye Girl? He could've been nominated twice.
And potentially split the vote? Not smart. Better to let the genre/"mainstream" performance in the same year convince on-the-fence voters to vote for you. Plus, it just makes your victory look stronger in hindsight. Two recent examples I can think of include Anne Hathaway winning Best Supporting Actress for Les Mis when she was in The Dark Knight Rises that same year and Jennifer Lawrence winning Best Actress for Silver Linings Playbook when she was also in The Hunger Games.
Richard Dreyfuss always managed to get the best looking women in his youth. I am not saying he was ugly, but he certainly was not sexy or handsome. at least by Hollywood standards or even mainstream American standards. He must have had some serious charm that we did not see or a SERIOUS you know what packed inside those pants!
All the actors deserved to win that year. Those were all fantastic movies. I'm glad Richard D. won. He is always one of my favorites. I don't think I could pick a favorite of his movies. I love all of them
Stallone: "Want me to do it by memory?" LOL Richard Dreyfuss was, and still is so cute. He was great in The Goodbye Girl. "I like to take showers every morning and I don't like the panties drying on the rod." :):)
"I play the guitar whenever I cannot sleep, and I meditate every morning, complete with chanting and burning incense, so if you have to walk around, I'd appreciate a little tiptoeing. Also, I sleep in the nude. "Au buffo" winter and summer, rain or snow, with the windows open, and because I may have to go to the potty or to the fridge in the middle of the night, and because I do not want to put on jammies, which I do not own in the first place, unless you're looking for a quick thrill or your daughter an advanced education, I'd keep my door closed." :)
I just watched 'The Goodbye Girl' for the first time in many years (it's on RUclips) and hadn't realised he won the Oscar in the face of some very stiff competition, but he 100% deserved it. Teriific performance!
I had just lost my dad the week before. My beloved friends took me to the movies. We saw The Goodbye Girl .. December 1977. Forever, my favorite film. May God bless Richard , Marsha, Quinn (do you have any idea how magnificent you were in this??) . And Herb Ross . Rest well , Neil Simon .
This was the first time I ever saw the audience stand up and applaud when it ended. The lady next to me was crying. I was just a kid but I could tell how special it was to everyone.
"This was no boat accident" Dreyfuss was brilliant in Jaws and this too, my all time favourite movie. I saw it when I was 12 years old in 1977 at the movies and have loved it ever since, fast forward to 2022 45 years later. Never dates as Elliott Garfield says, "I thought I had some good moments now and then" yes sir you did.
1. Big fan of Sly Stallone. Great actor and big star. 2. I think either Dreyfuss ( who won ) or Richard Burton ( what a pity that truly incredible actor didn't manage to win an Oscar) deserved to win. 3. Much respect to an incredible - legendary actor, Marcello Mastroianni
It might be the most iconic, but you've got to be joking if you think Annie Hall isn't remembered today. It has to be one of Woody Allen's most popular comedies from his early years. It also won Best Picture this year, as well as Best Actress, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay.
He REALLY DID NOT expect to win. I think he was genuinely shocked. Can you imagine -- being up against Richard Burton and Marcello Mastriani ? Wow ! -- but he DID genuinely deserve it ! He is an incredible actor. I will watch ANY movie that he is in. (was that his father that he was sitting next to on his left?)
That's funny that Mark Hamill is there, as Dreyfuss read for the role of Luke Skywalker when Lucas was casting. Also, Stallone, who is presenting here, auditioned for Han Solo.
I was nine years old when I saw this moment almost 40 years ago. I wanted John Travolta to win so bad that I could hear "Stayin' Alive" play and Travolta dance his way up to the podium to receive his award. Yet, I could not for the life of me understand why he did not win.
Wow! He beat John Travolta! I never knew he won. I didn't see the movie till many years later, since I was 16 when it came out it wasn't "my kind of movie" I guess..lol, now it is one of my all time favorites and I cry at the ending every single time! No one could have played Elliott & Paula except Dreyfus & Mason..no way!! ❤❤❤❤❤
Judging by the applause, Travolta finished a strong second. I wish Price Waterhouse would release the vote counts! I mean after 30, 40 years or so what harm would it do?
The funny thing about Richard Dreyfus is his looks back then. He was 26 in American graffiti but looked 16 in the film, and he was 30 in the goodbye girl but looked 40 in it! It’s impressive!
I remember this Oscars show ~ 2 of my favorite actors were up for Best Actor ~ Richard Dreyfuss and John Travolta ~ both had excellent acting performances!! The added bonus was Sly Stallone presenting ; )
TheChannel.TV You have to admit that the character Rocky Balboa could not have been portrayed by anyone else. Stallone brought Rocky to life!! Rocky won the Oscar for Best Picture in 1976. Rocky is considered to be one of the greatest sports films ever made and was ranked as the second in that category, after Raging Bull, by the American Film Institute in 2008.
+82sweetheart I enjoyed Rocky as a movie too... until Stallone turned that character into an obsession. He can't seem to play anything else even when he plays anything else. There was one exception with Cop Land. He was very good in that. As for winning best picture of 1976, it was one of the worst choices the academy ever made. The other nominees: Taxi Driver, Bound for Glory, Network, and All the President's Men, all of them superior films. Rocky was just an entertaining crowd-pleaser. More popular than genuinely artistic. That's not what the Oscars are supposed to be about. That's why you have peoples choice awards. And as a sports movie, it can't touch Chariots of Fire, Seabiscuit, or The Natural. Even as a boxing movie, it is way behind classics like Body and Soul (1947) and The Set-Up (1949) regardless of what the AFI says.
This man was 30 years old at the time and he looks like he was pushing 50, the only time I saw Richard Dreyfuss actually look young was in the "The Graduate"
Fer Abra True, that movie came out in 1973, this man aged too much, this video came out 5 years later, how could anyone age so much in such a short amount of time
He really deserved it,he was up against some heavy hitters too, being bipolar didn't stop him,i think he used the manic in this movie, great performance!
The Academy gave so many compensatory/sympathy Oscars before this to Bogart, John Wayne, Elizabeth Taylor (B8) and Burt Lancaster, they could have given this one to Richard Burton. Burton was a close second here to John Travolta
Really - Peter Firth gave the best performance by an actor in a leading role for EQUUS - but he was dumped into the supporting actor category - despite having more screen time than Burton. Dreyfuss had the double whammy of being in GOODBYE GIRL and CLOSE ENCOUNTERS that year which clearly helped.
Am I the only one who feels Richard Burton should have won the Oscar? He was so underrated through the years: Becket, Anne of the thousand days, Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf and Equus are masterclasses in acting, yet the Academy couldn't understand it. Such a shame we lost him so early, a great actor indeed.
The Goodbye Girl is the movie I fell in love with Richard Dreyfus. He so cute. How ironic that in this movie, there is a line "if you're ever up for an Academy Award I'll cross my fingers for you". ❤
I could watch The Goodbye Girl hundreds of times and still find it just as wonderful each and every time. The writing was so damn good and his performance was perfection. He and Marsha Mason had such great chemistry...but TBH, Quinn stole the scenes, she was incredible!
Richards came and spoke at my high school during the Bush/ Gore election in 2000 and he really is the nicest, funniest guy. Even though he was there to talk about Gore being so great ( Richard's one downfall ;) ) he answered alot of questions about movies and said that Goodbye Girl still remained his favorite movie he ever did. He definitely deserved the oscar for it!
I love short Oscar speeches. Thank you Richard Dreyfus. Other actors don't respect that there's a time limit for each acceptance speech. Nobody wants to hear a long boring acceptance. It's like you didn't find a cure for cancer.
He TOTALLY deserved it. The Goodbye Girl is a wonderful movie!
Indeed!

it was also the Greatest Decade of Music and Sports

Actually Richard starred in 3 Steven Spielberg movies, the 3rd one Richard starred in was 'Always' that was released in 1989.
Luke Skywalker congratulates him, Rocky Rambo hands it to him
Fab film still holds up today x
Goodbye Girl still makes me cry. I so loved him in this movie.
he still does! He of course was much cuter (in a nerdy way!) then, than he is now! He is still a funny old man, though, these days. :)
Richard Burton for Equus should've won.
He keeps the Oscar statue in his refrigerator at home.
I was 22 that year and wanted John Travolta to win. But I do like Richard Dreyfuss. He should have won for Close Encounters.
Such a cool movie :) John Travolta also looked so cute as a nominee here too!
I love short Oscar speeches. Thank you Richard Dreyfus. Other actors don't respect that there's a time limit for each acceptance speech. Nobody wants to hear a long boring acceptance. It's like you didn't find a cure for cancer.
