Juan Manuel Henao Gallego same, I just bought a bass to play all the Jason's bass solos... I actually can play My Friend of Misery and I'm so fking happy
Jason possessed a kind of heart and soul for the music that Cliff and Rob, while not lacking in, did not have as much as Jason did. You could see in the way he plays that he's absolutely in love with the music. Metal was in his veins, and he lived it. And while I don't think he was as technically skilled as Cliff or Rob, there's no denying that he brought a lot of power and grit to the band that I hope people never forget.
rellik187redrum better musician? I think Robert, but better band member? Jason is far beyond the sun, noone will ever come close to how he fit MetallicA
James and Lars both confess they treated Jason like a step child. Better than Cliff ? Better than Trujillo ( dude looks like he's taking a shit when plays). Each have their own distinct style. What Jason brought and brings to the discussion also admitted by Lars and James a tremendous ball of energy and angst to his bass playing. He has the ability to pull it back and lay down some melodic tones that are just ,,,damn.
Not only that's a volume pedal, not a wah, do you think THIS video of him making some nice and easy arpegios almost any bassist with less than a year can play is where he shows his talent? some arpegios?
jason puts a GREAT sensibility in what he play. He is underrated like every other bassist that play with a pick, ONLY beecause he play with a pick. You have got to listen to his sound and appreciate it. This solo/medley is amazing and the sound of the bass is awesome, one of the best i've ever heard.
Great upload, thanks, haven't listened to cunning stunts for years. Can I be one of the few to step outside of the rob vs jason which seems to enrage so many. From a pure bassists viewpoint, what makes Jason's such a unique & talented player, and his solo highlites this, is that his solo is understaded, beautiful and soulfull. He has such a precise, clean playing style, which you can hear as far back as 1985 during his time with Flotsam and Jetsam. So lets just celebrate the musician that he he is.
jasons solos are so perfect. my friend of misery is such a beautiful peice, almost brings me to tears. guy puts so much emotion into his playing, which is why he is my fav metallica bassist. plus his unbeatable headbanging. he really is a bass genius.
when i listen to the dvd cunning stunts I felt in love with this tunes. I even love it more than the beginning of fade to black which is masterpiece. Just rewind to listen to Newsted bass!
rob and jason are two tottly diffrent kind of bass players and there both great at there style listen to some old suicidal or infectious grooves he kills it on bass cuz that's his style just like jason killed it for metallica they should of listened to jason and kept making heavy metal and not the shit they put out now listen to metallicas new album back to the good old thrash days but i think a day late and a dollar short just my opinion
its great to see jason being recognized as a great bassist this guy is not only great technical skill but sounds beautiful and composed great music. Jason is the guy who kept metallica together after cliffs death and helped made them who they are today. theres no question how much jason has done for metallica and rock n roll let alone, he helped make metallica who they are today, without him they wouldve broken up a long time ago jason is probably one of the most recognized bassists alive
I really like Jason's style of solo-ing/playing. I play a lot of slower solos like this. The bass sounds so beautiful that I can lose myself for hours playing
+Vitor Flausino Sometimes a band gets away with replacing a person like Newsted and sometimes they don't. They fired Dave lost Cliff then Jason quit, and now they're pretty lame IMO. You'll usually only stumble on to that kind of chemistry once in a lifetime so Metallica has been lucky to change the line up that much and not fall on their face sooner. Check out Rob's stuff from Tendencies, he really is an awesome bass player, he just doesn't seem to fit in Metallica. Their music is night and day different since he came along.
cliff was, always will be a god among gods! that being said, jason had much greater melodic feel for the bass, much smoother, better tone! say what you want, cliff was cutting edge, jason was the tool used to refine the edge! love cliff burton, robert , also! but jason was and is metallica!
"Very nice Jason. Now your second lesson will be next Saturday at 11:00 o'clock instead of 10:00. Be a good boy now and I'll see you next weekend.. Here's a lollypop and say hello to your mother for me."
Jason's definitely one of my favourite bassists. If you look back at the old videos of him in Metallica, he was pretty aggressive in parts of his solos but he knew how to change the tempo quite well.
dante laufter no the intro to the solo before my friend of misery is somthing he wrote himself, clearly didnt get put into a song, hes so underated... hes awesome
He puts so much energy into it. You can really feel the emotion in it. My cousin went to a tallica show a couple of years ago, when jason was still in and said that he had his own personal towel and mop guy to clean up all his sweat, LOL
Robert trujillo? Just a fill in? Cmon now hes very good compared to many. He may not be jason but hes not just a fill in. There wouldnt be anymore shows if it wasnt for robert.
For me it's not about tecnique, or skill, or anything, when I see Jason playing, I just feel in love, is so pure, so awesome, with so much feeling, energy, he had a very hard time in Metallica, and I respect him enough to understand him leaving the band, it makes me sad how the other members just disrespected him as a player, and as a person, but it's past time, so please, forget all that "Cliff vs Jason vs Rob" and just feel the music, thanks Jason for your years in Metallica.
Cliff was more skilled than Jason, but Jason was a better performer on stage and really got the crowd going. I'd rather listen to Cliff's recordings, but I'd rather watch Jason live.
for some reason this solo has the ability of almost reducing me to tears
same
what a beautiful and emotional solo from Jason, loved every minute of it
I really miss Jason. A fantastic bass player.
+Tan Ulrich turned down all his knobs on And Justice For All... LOL
You are too
Yea same here i miss him. Great Bassist and that energy on the stage
ROBERT 🦀🦀🦀 ROBERT 🚁🚁🚁
Just listen to his band "Newsted"
This, this solo is my inspiration to be a bass player....
My inspiration to be a bass player was anesthesia and the bass solo from Orion
Juan Manuel Henao Me too, this video is very powerful, Jason is a great guy
Juan Manuel Henao Gallego same, I just bought a bass to play all the Jason's bass solos... I actually can play My Friend of Misery and I'm so fking happy
Trebla Freeman nice man I'm getting a new bass along with a wah so I can make my own solos like jasons
bass is like the sound of soul.
Jason is not only a bass player. Jason is not only a musician. Jason is an Artist!
Agreed!!!
I will say that Cliff loved music too, maybe a little less tham Jason
Jason will always be Metallica.
cliff was actually the most passionate tho. jason had the best stage presence.
lets be honest, Clift was a fucking beast in the bass, but jason and robert are very cool too
Ever better than RHCP's bassist Flea?
They really lost something when Jason left.
Like what?
+LSweet2007 Jason FUCKING Newsted...
+Tango Delta 2 Totally agree!
+LSweet2007 their soul
+Tango Delta 2 something? they lost everything
Robs a great bassist but man Jason was a hell of a player
Seth Frenette who was better? No answer.......
rellik187redrum better musician? I think Robert, but better band member? Jason is far beyond the sun, noone will ever come close to how he fit MetallicA
One of the deepest solo I've ever heard.... Thank you Jason, thank you very much
This solo tells a story. A story of a bass player with passion
favorite bassist of metallica
Jason had soul
It's amazing how those two melodies compliment each other.
I hate to hate on rob but this right here is irreplaceable when Jason left a huge chunk of the band left with him
I totally agree, Newsted brought something special to the band that Rob does not manage to..
You mean brought not brang.
Oublié It's a southern thing.
What about when cliff died
Jason is on record saying when he was young he couldn't afford an amp, and played with a pick so he could hear the notes.
I have to say this is one of the best things metallica ever did live.
this clip still kicks my ass..love jamming the intro and the My Friend of Misery bit too..
As much as people poke fun at kirk for over using his Wah pedal, He really kills it with this
That's a volume pedal, not a wah
And that swell had no soul.
Not only that's a volume pedal, not a wah, do you think THIS video of him making some nice and easy arpegios almost any bassist with less than a year can play is where he shows his talent? some arpegios?
Manuel Ramirez he’s talking about Kirk not Jason you downie.
Robert should solo long solos like this Jason newsted was metallica since he has gone the band went down hill
he is a crazy beast on bass and when it comes to headbanging he always rocked the stage and he plays with passion one of the best
I think that jason bass is so good... I prefer metallica with jason...
Same my fav is Jason although Cliff is the best. But if Cliff still alive, there will be no bassist change.
jason puts a GREAT sensibility in what he play. He is underrated like every other bassist that play with a pick, ONLY beecause he play with a pick. You have got to listen to his sound and appreciate it. This solo/medley is amazing and the sound of the bass is awesome, one of the best i've ever heard.
miss you jason :)
word!!!
Jason has such a big soul.. I can almost see it rising while he's playing..
Is this when Kirk looked like Prince?
Lmao
And when Jason looked a bit like James does nowadays
Ryan Shehata SHHHHH were trying to forget that😂😂
Ryan Shehata a little late but ya. Prince with Chris Angel
@Давид Тухманов Agreed.
Even though Jason doesn't play the fast solos like Cliff and Rob, he's still my favorite of the bassists because of his solos like this
Jason was the man
Great upload, thanks, haven't listened to cunning stunts for years. Can I be one of the few to step outside of the rob vs jason which seems to enrage so many. From a pure bassists viewpoint, what makes Jason's such a unique & talented player, and his solo highlites this, is that his solo is understaded, beautiful and soulfull. Dimebag and Cliff rocking out in the heavens.
+Brian Smith now with lemmy...... :(
i dont know why this solo brings back many memories of my childhood, so nostalgic :(
Got nothing against Rob, but for me it's Jason all the way, if i could trade, i would.
jason is part of the the sound of metallica and he is the most suited for the job, rocbert is good but is like he can fit jasons shoes
Jason was the heart and soul of Metallica because he showed passion for the music
jasons solos are so perfect. my friend of misery is such a beautiful peice, almost brings me to tears. guy puts so much emotion into his playing, which is why he is my fav metallica bassist. plus his unbeatable headbanging. he really is a bass genius.
Its not just about speed, that solo has a soul.
Maybe Jason and Kirk should make more music together or Metallica should include 2 bassists.
Wouldn't work, you can't have two basses in one band it just doesn't work
H D I know this is late, but tell that to dumpstaphunk
@@HD-md9pr Yes, you can
I love Megadeth more then Metallica but the two players that made me pick up a bass and learn were Cliff & Newsted.
when i listen to the dvd cunning stunts I felt in love with this tunes. I even love it more than the beginning of fade to black which is masterpiece. Just rewind to listen to Newsted bass!
You know that you are a great musician when you give a reason to so many people to learn and make music ... and Jason does
this solo is amazing
Metallica stop being the day they split from Jason here, not that theres anything wrong with Robert, its just not Metallica anymore
Ohhhhhh!!! My friend of misery!
this song makes me so crazy... is AWESOME!!
it´s so exciting!
This movie is amazing, and so was Jason. We miss you!
I,,I,
This is EPIC!
rob and jason are two tottly diffrent kind of bass players and there both great at there style listen to some old suicidal or infectious grooves he kills it on bass cuz that's his style just like jason killed it for metallica they should of listened to jason and kept making heavy metal and not the shit they put out now listen to metallicas new album back to the good old thrash days but i think a day late and a dollar short just my opinion
Listen to spit out the bone

just downloaded this song , just perfect , two titans !! we should be very glade to live at same time as they to enjoy them playing !
metallica when it really was metallica. Class.
I'm glad kirk doesn't look like that anymore
Downloaded this years ago on Kazaa, when I was still a kid. Damm, so many good memories!
I really like Jason's style of solo-ing/playing. I play a lot of slower solos like this. The bass sounds so beautiful that I can lose myself for hours playing
this is great!!!
Jason Newsted > Robert Trujillo
I disagree
Trujillo is more technical and he motivates the rest of the band.
If Jason was in death magnetic then it wouldn't of been a trash album which it is
+Megadethfans Areajoke And you name is megadethfans HA!
Mmm....perfect tone. No one has quite the same tone as Newsted.
Ok, once again: Love Jason's bass. This is great. Cliff was one of a kind, but Jason play the bass so so great. Jason is incredible great!
Is there a name to the first part of the bass solo before he gets into My Friend of Misery?
IF YOU FIND OUT PLEASE TELL ME
Late response but it’s Cunning Stunts
on guitar, Jack Sparrow is that you?
Man. I feel so bad for Jason. I think he did a great job of filling Cliffs shoes. ;/ Hes just so god damn underrated in what he did.
jason where are you? I cried tears with this song, the best!!!
cliff was, always will be a god among gods! that being said, jason had much greater melodic feel for the bass, much smoother, better tone! say what you want, cliff was cutting edge, jason was the tool used to refine the edge! love cliff burton, robert , also! but jason was and is metallica!
"Very nice Jason. Now your second lesson will be next Saturday at 11:00 o'clock instead of 10:00. Be a good boy now and I'll see you next weekend.. Here's a lollypop and say hello to your mother for me."
Easy can sound great +joe pish
2nd favorite bass solo, fun as hell to play, easy to learn if you play
This is the solo/dvd that compelled me to pick up bass. Sounds like he's running a flanger pedal!
Please someone send me a link to tabs!
Does anyone know the tabs for the first part?
You don't spell "ear training" with only four letters. Then it becomes a four letter word ...
Jason's definitely one of my favourite bassists. If you look back at the old videos of him in Metallica, he was pretty aggressive in parts of his solos but he knew how to change the tempo quite well.
jason newsted i miss you in metallica....with kirk doing a magistral combination...the best friends in the band...
What is this song? Before my friend of mysery?
It's not a song it's something how wrote which never actually turned into a song, but tbh it's just beautiful
Do you mean welcome home ?
dante laufter no the intro to the solo before my friend of misery is somthing he wrote himself, clearly didnt get put into a song, hes so underated... hes awesome
It’s not really a song but called Cunning Stunts
Cliff had such more skill, but Jason had more passion, period.
Id say soul but my opinion
. cheers mate!👍
He puts so much energy into it. You can really feel the emotion in it. My cousin went to a tallica show a couple of years ago, when jason was still in and said that he had his own personal towel and mop guy to clean up all his sweat, LOL
one of the most beautiful things i ever heard
I have to agree with all the comments, that new bass player they have now is just a fill in. The band has lost it's way now.
Robert trujillo? Just a fill in? Cmon now hes very good compared to many. He may not be jason but hes not just a fill in. There wouldnt be anymore shows if it wasnt for robert.
+Max Howlett Hasn't been in the band since 2003?
It's kinda sad that by the time this comment was made Rob was in the band for over 12 years and was still the "new guy"
como se extraña a Jason :( , trujillo nada que ver...hablo de la personalidad ,no de la tecnica (aclaro)
The best bass solo of Jason
For me it's not about tecnique, or skill, or anything, when I see Jason playing, I just feel in love, is so pure, so awesome, with so much feeling, energy, he had a very hard time in Metallica, and I respect him enough to understand him leaving the band, it makes me sad how the other members just disrespected him as a player, and as a person, but it's past time, so please, forget all that "Cliff vs Jason vs Rob" and just feel the music, thanks Jason for your years in Metallica.
Beware of unintelligent Jason fan-boys below me!
And soon to be above me!
For all of you cliff huggers, I'm sorry to say this but Jason was better than cliff
Music covers and more i agree with you man
Music covers and more no one saysanything about Ron McGoveney
Cliff was more skilled than Jason, but Jason was a better performer on stage and really got the crowd going. I'd rather listen to Cliff's recordings, but I'd rather watch Jason live.
Music covers and more Jason is not better than cliff... it really needs no argument
5 minutes of pure perfection ...
Wow that was beautiful! sent chills up my back!
Wonderful solo!
thanks for sharing!
The prettiest bass solo.
So simple yet so powerful....damn that's good.
wow this is one of hes best solos ive herd, i didnt know u could make a sound like that with only a pick and bass! Thumbs up to jason
I remember the first time I ever watched this, downloading this clip at 4 in the morning on Kazaa. And I couldn't stop watching it.
no matter what they say , this guy playd with his soul
what a wonderful bass solo :)!
@paragpep the song is called "Welcome home (sanitarium) from their third album MASTER OF PUPPETS released in 1986
This makes me itch to get a bass and start learning. I fucking love bass.
This rocks, love it so much!
This solo creeps me out. It's an awesome tune for when you are some kind of depressed or sad.
man this never fails to amaze me...im trying to learn it
my idol. man i miss seeing him rock out with metallica. :( love and miss you jason!
This is how angels in heaven play the bass
this really is the reason why i started playing the bass!
so crisp and melodic.
Best metallica bassist ever
my favorite newsted solo
The reason for me wanting to learn the bass for many years. This very performance
i love the tone of his bass a lot
