The first time I heard this song I was driving. I stopped at the next stop and downloaded it and listened to it several times before I went to work. I always said that Jolene was the best song ever created. I was wrong.
That bass player's line is a symphony on it's own, looping and soaring around, over and through everything the band is doing, tightly woven with the drums and supporting the whole band while underscoring the perfection of this song. He is a maestro of the bass. Every time I hear this I'm left in awe and always sad that it ends. It leaves me empty and longing for more...
My goodness when Derek goes at it and especially so with the slide, I don't think there's a guitarist alive who draws you in with such intensity, melody and emotion! 🔥🔥
What i keep arguing with my daughter . I tell her this is MUSIC ! Taylor Swift changing outfits 31 times with 50 fancy boys sliding around your feet is SHOW business !
I wonder how many glass slides have been purchased as a result of people watching Derek work his magic on his SG. I'm one - I never knew slide guitar could sound like that. Beautiful and inspiring.

You are right on my levels. Music is dead on regular radio stations. I asked for several different requests for songs they simply just don’t play and you will never hear because it’s all computer downloaded certain songs. Not like the old days where the sea of any song could be played on radio. It’s truly sad that decades of beautiful great music is wiped out of standard radio. Delani and David got it right, this is definitely one song I can listen to over and over and never get tired of it and yes Susan is a great vocalist and an outstanding guitarist. Derek is unmatched as a slide guitar player! I’ve had the pleasure to see them both a few times over the years with the Allman Brothers Band, Derek Trucks Band and TTB. Awesome!!!
Fil, the british guitarist has a thorough analysis of derek's amazing style. He also has an analysis of derek and warren haynes together. Fil is so knowledgeable and never negative. Know your statement was probably rhetorical but check both out; you won't be disappointed. Just search british guitarist derek trucks.
It is probably even more difficult than you think it is. He sets up the guitar to play without the slide and uses very heavy gauge strings. Trying to play slide on that fret setup is a nightmare. He does not change guitars at all during concerts (or very rarely). Do a search for rig rundown derek trucks. He goes into it a bit.
One of those bands that every instrument member and songs just meld together in perfect unison and special note to Susan for great vocals and Eric for better than exceptional guitar abilities! Love every song from these artists! Love and respect!
My dad worked for Hammond Organ from the 1950s thru the 1970s. He was wood finisher. When the organs came off the assembly line, he made sure the cabinet's finish was perfect before they went out the door. Always makes me smile when I go to a concert and see a B3, knowing that he probably had his fingers on it at some time before it left the factory.
@@matthewkucharski8817 Cool story, Matt. I presume your dad was in Evanston, Illinois? One of my favorite playlists is "Hammond B3" -- filled with Jimmy Smith, Lee Michaels, Joey DeFrancesco, Johnny "Hammond" Smith, Al Kooper, "Brother" Jack McDuff, et al ......
He started on Bloomingdale road in Chicago making cabinets and then worked out of Melrose Park, Illinois. Short time on Diversey Rd. Hammond shut down everything in Chicago and moved to NC in the late 70s, that's when he left.
I am so sad when this song ends, they should write another 30 verses and a more guitar solos. They could do a whole concert of this song. Susans voice and Dereks guitar are so complimantary of each other not to mention a fabulous band to go along.

I agree. This song has something special. Susan is a big part of that....she is unmatched!!! And Derek...no one currently (2022) even comes close to him ....I never cease to be amazed!!
And that perfect back up vocal section! The interesting, surprising modulation, pulling in a direction that’s perfect, nearly invisible. Jesus! If they never did another dingle thing, they still be a national treasure

Somewhere in heaven, Duane weeps with tears of joy. I swear, Derek's playing is a cross between Duane and Dickey. Susan has that Bonnie Raitt thing going too. This whole band is just incredible and this song has such a 70's vibe to it. Every time I listen to it I don't want it to end. I keep hoping for a Filmore East type performance where they jam for an hour or more!
As a guitar player I've always loved Derek's playing. I guess I never realized just how GREAT of a singer Susan is. I cant find any holes in her game she is really my favorite singer nowadays. So much passion and her tone is intoxicating! Thanks to the both of you!
I knew about Derek but Susan,Mike and rest of the band oh my. Just Joy. Got to catch them 3 times live in the past year. Twice driving 5hrs. Time well spent
What a band! What a song! It doesn't get any better than this. This is on the same level as Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa. I can't find a single thing wrong with this band. Everyone is extraordinary. What a rare treat to see a band like this play together.
For those of you out there that only listen to ONE type of music or artist are just absolutely cheating yourself - I grew up loving classic R&B ,Soul ,Funk ,Soft Rock, - This group and others like it are incredibly talented and beautiful to listen to , NEVER get stuck on ONE type of music 🎶 🎵
I don't remember how I came accross this a few months ago, but up to that day I didn't know anything about Susan and Derek (I know that's a shame...) but as I love blues, YT found a way to show me up this amazing video. Susan's voice is perfect here and the lyrics are full of deep feelings and sorrow. Derek's solo is simply outstanding, even better than the original one on the 2011 record! The whole band is fantastic and particularly that bass line is so lovely! I look forward to see them live here in Europe!!
I love that little smile Susan gives Derek just before he starts his solo ... could it be that every member of the band gets goosebumps like we do when Derek solos on this one .. its a bit special isn't it .. every time ; because the tune is just made for him .. thanks Mike M ...
I never thought there could be a piece of music that is perfect well I was wrong. This here is as close to perfect as you can get. The Band, Derek, and Susan hit it no doubt about it. You can never tire of this song it makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up.This Band if not the best is pretty close to it. Derek can make the guitar sing like no other, and Susan has the voice of an angel. The Band just brings it all together as if twelve members are playing as one. It's just damn good. I have the pleasure of seeing them in Youngstown, Ohio in July what a time it will be. Tedeschi Trucks Band you are simply the Best.
I had taken note of Derek Trucks some years back because he played with the Allman Brothers Band. I never really gave him much thought one way or the other as far as a guitarist. I knew that he had to be good to have been playing with Gregg Allman for all those years, but I never paid any attention to his abilities as a guitarist, per se’. Then I began to see him different places, on stage with different artists and everyone would always refer to him with such deference that I began to sit up and take notice. When I finally paid attention I quickly became a fan. I have always been a huge Clapton fan, still am. Clapton plays with an intensity like no one else. Sometimes it is as if his fingers are flying so fast they will burn up the strings. Clapton forces the guitar to places almost beyond its capability. Derek Trucks plays with a lot of that same focused intensity, but he also shows a different facet to his playing, in that he seems to sort of finesse the guitar to bring forth the sounds that he seeks. Anyway, that is how I hear it. He is a very talented man and I do enjoy listening to him play tremendously, and every time I hear him play a solo I become an even more entrenched Derek Trucks fan.
I first heard this song on Austin City Limits, and I've been a fan ever since! It's the best song ever, played by the best band ever, and sung by such a beautiful woman, with a beautiful soulful voice. And Derek, just can't say enough about him! I hate coming across this song on RUclips, 'cause I just can't stop playing it!
Best slide I have ever heard since Duane Allman - well and Susan T basically melts my head with her perfect voice --- so yeah I am blown to smithereens again - the end of that slide solo could be the best I have ever heard period.
As sacrilegious as it may sound to ABB purists, DT left Skydog behind awhile ago, although if he lived to be even as old as Derek was then, let alone to be as old as Gregg was at death, we'd be amazed. Duane was just beginning to delve into jazz when he died.
one night at a Warehouse, I heard something I never heard before, a guitar that was in the realm of... I don't know what.... I stood and was carried from the brim of Hell and upward to the edge of Heaven in a splint second, and I have never seen it since, til now, I saw the ABB in many varied venues, Duane led that group of boys, never seen it since, til now, at young fella Derek, he makes me cry, just like Duane did, sorry if that offends any of you, I have seen Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Peter Green, and a list of Blues players that would burn ya ass BB, Buddy Guy, and others that have gone on, Duane was the first one to make me fall down for the Blues, but apparently the end is far more than come, for here is Derek Trucks, a great musician and human being to come to the table, folks he carries a load of Blues in his pocket, jus like Duane did, and you ought to LISTEN, and that gal, Susan, she got a set of pipes that I can only, mama pls, compare to the late and phenomenal Bessie Smith, she ain't bad on the guitar, and what can you say about the band, congrats to you mates.... I can only say that I have been moved twice in the past 65 years, By the Allman Brothers Band and once by this group of folks, they Rock !😎!

Derek is mindblowing. What a gifted man.
Like waves rolling to the shore this song has such a beautiful momentum. Love it !!!
If you dont tear up during that solo you got no feelings
Yes, he really found the feeling with that slide. Chillingly beautiful.
I did. He makes us feel it.
How is he so accurate with the slide?! Oh man can that guy play.
@@Autistic_train_set actually in an interview he says he plays 10s, not at all heavy.
The only slide solo that mades me actually cry just listening.
Absolutely amazing!
@@Autistic_train_set He doesn't use very heavy gauge strings, he uses 46-11
One of those bands that every instrument member and songs just meld together in perfect unison and special note to Susan for great vocals and Eric for better than exceptional guitar abilities! Love every song from these artists! Love and respect!
What a great band. This brought me to tears, I won't lie...
Heard the on radio some months ago now am totally hooked ,brilliant.
How could anyone not love this song.
That guitar solo brings me to tears
Who else is a sucker for the Hammond B3?
Just me, an old, young, forever fool. ❤
I worked at Guitar Center when I was 19, and someone brought one in to sell. I swear every guy working in the store came up running front to see it.
Susan does a wonderful job on this song! Great tune for the whole band! Love it!
These guys make some of the best music ever!
When I listen to songs like this , I know , rather than just think , that there’s far more to this human experience than meets the eye...
I am so sad when this song ends, they should write another 30 verses and a more guitar solos. They could do a whole concert of this song. Susans voice and Dereks guitar are so complimantary of each other not to mention a fabulous band to go along.
Best band ive heard in years. Love Susan and Derick
Good home boy
Search for some of their other performances of this. Derek's solos are individual to each one.
Seriously
From the Soul of the Earth it sprang ,like a spring so deep and pure upon this land, Food for the Soul, the body and the artful Mind! May we forever walk in Beauty!!!
I got tickets to see them at The Red Rocks In Colorado on the 27th. Can't wait!
I never thought a song could make me cry from vocals and slide guitar. Im adding this to the band's set list. It gets me every time...amazing chemistry and composing
i cried also. took me back to when my mom And dad and the whole family was together. rest in paradise to all that have gone on to Heaven ❤️❤️❤️🙏🏿
I agree. This song has something special. Susan is a big part of that....she is unmatched!!! And Derek...no one currently (2022) even comes close to him ....I never cease to be amazed!!
So glad I discovered this band. Saw them in concert in Santa Barbara at an incredible venue. They didn't disappoint
Timeless, heart-achingly beautiful! Takes me to that sweet spot inside where my soul lives in bliss & tears of joy fill my eyes. Pure magic!
I couldn't have said it better myself! Spoken like a poet!
Time stops for me when I hear this song
And that perfect back up vocal section! The interesting, surprising modulation, pulling in a direction that’s perfect, nearly invisible. Jesus! If they never did another dingle thing, they still be a national treasure
2020 FEB
Well, I came to the city
I was running from the past
My heart was bleeding
And it hurt my bones to laugh
Stayed in the city
No exception to the rules, to the rule
He was born to love me
I was raised to be his fool, his fool
Walk that line, torn apart
Spend your whole life trying
Ride that train, free your heart
It's midnight up in Harlem
I went down to the river
And I took a look around
There were old man's shoes
There were needles on the ground
No more mysteries, baby
No more secrets, no more clues
The stars are out there
You can almost see the moon
The streets are windy
And the subway's closing down
Gonna carry this dream
To the other side of town.
Walk that line, torn apart
Spend your whole life trying
Ride that train, free your heart
It's midnight up in Harlem

Such magical poetry, such powerful words.
Her voice and that special rare band that plays as one...melodic treat
In an internet leadened with hate and divisiveness and BS, this that one little corner of heaven that shines amongst us.
I just discovered this band...and this song! Wow! It touches my heart strings. I can't stop listening to it❤
You guys really nailed it!! This is my favorite version of Midnight in Harlem ❤
Jazz also..
my exact thoughts. this song touched my heart ❤️.
a live band. this song took me back to when my whole family was together. rest in paradise to my ancestors ❤️❤️❤️
I found myself tearing during Derek's solo. Phreakin' great!
hands down the best guitar solo i've ever heard. Only few seconds into it, i forgot that I had a body.
Pure class, and 13 years after posting the positive comments keep coming
Without question this band is by far the best out there. Everyone of them are notch musicians.
Damn I love this group.
Incomparable. Saw them again 2 nights ago. There simply can't be a better band in the world
I never thought there could be a piece of music that is perfect well I was wrong.
DT - Crazy slide guitar work!
You never know what to expect when Derek starts playing, but you know that every note will be absolutely perfect!
Edf
Best Band in the world right now. Susan and Derek are out of this world great.
The second drum break is one of the most amazing things I've ever heard. Manu is a master
Oh my days. So so sweet lyrics and an unbelievable guitar solo XXXX
@@mikeprevost8650 i love love love gregg...i thought derek was "from him" the 1st time i heard this, having no clue...turns out i was right.
i tell people that little brother gregg wrote those songs, like sweet melissa, when he was 17.. i never knew of sky dog, even though laura nyro was my favorite. i missed out, but i aint that much of a guitar fan, like other instruments..so derek trucks just fckng kills me.!!
I have seen most of the RUclips videos of this song, and I love them all, but Susan’s vocals and Derick’s solo are so good, this is my favorite, plus you can never get enough of the beautiful sound of that Hammond b, RIP Kofi
