    No laser lights, no dancers, no autotunes. Just a stationary camera up close and she captivates with *that voice* and a delivery of a song that gives life to lyrics. She was only 23 here but had completed the Broadway run of "Funny Girl", a month prior it had been announced that she would star in the movie version (her first Oscar win), she was headed for the London stage run--where she'd find out she was pregnant on opening night--the soundtrack to this special would be her 8th top 10 album, she'd won 2 Grammys and 5 Emmys, and in December she'd give birth to her son, Jason Gould. 😱 I can't imagine that level of success and responsibility at 23! I was worried about what we were doing the approaching weekend!
    Thank you for a great reaction Saeed! 😊

    Barbra's artistry is so deep-so full-so off the charts-the second she begins making sound tears spring to my eyes. I am so transformed by the beauty of the tone, her ease, the fearlessness with which she tells us her story. she works magic with her sound. pure magic. this early period for Streisand is just so stunning. vocally-everything was at her command. she could go anywhere she wanted it seems. she is always going to the most dangerous places in her sound-and conquering. she just IS music when she sings. and she takes me away! thanks for posting! i;ve like and subscribed.

  • @katiemcteague
    @katiemcteague 25 дней назад +3

    It's interesting that you commented how Barbra serves the song because those are her exact sentiments on singing. She has said before that the singer's job is to serve the song and not themselves. She looks at every single song and finds the story and makes sure that she's the storyteller for the listener. They are few and far between singers who are like that today. Singers like Mariah Carey and Christina Aguilera just show off more than sing. Not that they can't sing, but they are always adding runs and whistle notes where it's becomes showing off what they can do and the song takes place. Great reaction!

    She recorded the song in 1964 on her "The Third Album" and two years later performed it on this 1966 special. No gimmicks, no autotune, no vulgarity, just the voice, the lyrics, and the orchestra. This song was performed over the years by the greats as a ballad, swing, uptempo, etc. Here, it is a very internal performance acting-wise.

    The good picture quality is due to this special being filmed rather than recorded on analog videotape.
    Although analog videotape was invented in 1956, the transition from recording TV shows on film to analog videotape was slow. In the late 1960s, film was still used for many prime time TV series and specials. The use of analog videotape instead of film for most TV shows became more widespread in the 1970s and almost universal in the 1980s because of the lower cost despite the lower picture quality than that of film.
    This is why the digital recordings and restoration of many TV shows from the 1960s look much better than those from the 1970s through the early 1990s.
    By the mid-1990s, the U.S. TV/video/ post-production industry had gone digital in a big way, using component digital video recording, processing and editing technologies, which produced better quality recordings of TV shows than had analog videotape.

    Just adore your reactions, Saeed. You really appreciate the artform your watching and listening to, and it means so much to your listeners and fans of a particular artist, how you personally relate to a song or era, and how you genuinely share that with us in your own sincere way.
    There's so much Barbra throughout each decade, that it's nearly impossible to point to one that was her 'prime'... she just reinvented herself each decade it seems, yet always staying tethered and true to herself and her uniqueness. Can't wait to introduce you to more surprises throughout her career.
    Great suggestion, David...😉👍👍

    Saeed, are you sure you don't have some New York in you? The more I listen to you, the more I hear a slight NY accent. And then when you said, "You know what I mean?" - Barbra always says that phrase in her NY Brooklynese accent! Hehe! Anyway, it was great seeing your reaction again to another Streisand classic. (Me thinks she's got you hooked! 😉) Hey, I learned something from you on this one I never knew. You said this song was written in 1924. And then mentioned how we're listening to it 100 years later in 2024. And guess what, Barbra was 24 in this TV Special here. And also Barbra has always said that 24 is her lucky number! I love numerology! Wonder what it means, though? Lol!
    BTW, I'm dying to see your reaction to the Yentl Medley or even just "A Piece of Sky" from the movie Yentl. Can't wait to see your face when you get to one of her pinnacle blow-you-away numbers! She's got some real blockbusters you will almost not believe that that voice is coming out of a human being! 😎👍

      I have grown up watching many films set in New York. So it might be because of that. And as a kid it was always my dream to visit New York, because it seemed like such a different place than where i was from. Then at 21 i was able to do it and i went with my girlfriend who is now my wife :)
      No way that 24 is her lucky number and all these connections now :) That is amazing!
      I definitely will get to those as well. Today i have a reaction coming to her duet with Michael Bublé singing this song.

    Streisand in her early recordings had idiosyncratic, innovative phrasing which carried emotional clout, but sadly as she became more commercial that was flattened out so she lost a lot of her originality while still being a top class artist.
