Great informative video bud. It’s amazing how golf club manufactures have conned us all saying that they are making golf irons in a way that we can now hit them longer!! What a crock of s**t!! Back in 1989, I bought a set of Mizuno TP9 irons. The 7 iron loft on that club was 37 degrees, now 30 years on, 7 irons are now 28 degrees. That’s 9 degrees stronger!!! The equivalent to the TP9 5 iron of which I could hit 180yds back in the day. Low and behold, that’s how long I hit a 7 Iron now!!! Manufacturers should be held to task by the R&A and USPGA as to what lofts can be set to an iron. Calling it “strong” is false!! Putting a 5 iron loft on a 7 iron shaft and calling it a Strong 7 iron. That’s deception!! Soon we’ll be hitting 3 irons longer than Driver!!
In their defence, these 27 degree irons do launch much easier, and go higher than your standard 27 degree 5 iron back in the day. But don’t get me wrong - I’m more of a traditionalist.... I happily play a 33 degree 7 iron. Perhaps in this crazy age it should simply be loft in degrees that is stamped on the bottom of the club???
Tried the Sim max OS 7 iron (27 Degree's loft GGGeee) on GC2 monitor; I'm not a long hitter; older guy now but when struck with a smooth swing went 175 yds straight with little dispersion. What surprised me was the height in doing so, nice and high so it landed soft with little roll. Yes they are strong but it gets the ball up and I also noticed the buttery feel from the insert not harsh at all! They are not for everybody but I can see the need for the upper and high handicap golfers. Agree enough already with the strong lofts -DeX
So after a myriad of health issues I made the decision to move from a lifetime blades player to game improvement. After I was allowed to hit balls again it was trying to say the least. Practiced for 6 months and after getting over my ego, I made the decision to switch. So I after watching this Video, I tried Sim OS. They were really shock absorbing coupled with graphite shafts and that is what my body needs. No Pain. Just before the health issues started, I was a 6 handicap. Nothing special about my game. So I go from a 6 to not knowing which end to grip, or that’s how it seemed. If you hadn’t recommended these, I would have never tried them. After hitting them I decided to have a club fitting. They were delivered Friday and I have hit them at the range the last two days. THANK YOU! My hands don’t hurt, I actually have a ball flight that resembles my old flight. Without your no nonsense, straightforward, good natured review, I would have never given these a chance. Thank You So Much!
I tried the Sim max OS 7 iron (27 Degree's loft GGGeee) on GC2 monitor and I'm not a long hitter; older now but when I struck it with a smooth swing like your suppose to hit it ; it went 175 yds straight but what surprised me was the height in doing so, nice and high so it landed good with little roll.Question is do you really need to upgrade from your older irons.Yes they are strong but it gets the ball up and I also notice the buttery feel from the insert not harsh at all! -DeX
6 iron with a 4 iron loft. I’m still playing Wilson staff fluid feel irons from the 80’s Michael. Forgiveness? Practice your swing. I’ll be 62 this year, I’m happy with a pure hit 150 yard 7 iron. I’ll take a 210 yard 3 wood. Like your videos. I’d be real happy with a wheelbarrow full of money to purchase these irons. Cheers!
Just bought the Sim Max (last year's model). Switched from Ping G400's. These are great stix so far. First time out nearly had hole in one on 185 yd par 3. 2 feet away. A few hole later, I hit the pin with a 207yd 5 iron (then missed the Eagle putt.....DOH !!) I love these things.
Bought the Max irons in 2020 and have been happy with them. They did replace my Ping 400 irons, which in turn I've replaced with the Tokomo 101's. Life. Tee it up!
Certainly long and high, but the front to back dispersion is pretty large. The Wilson D7 forged you reviewed two days ago had substantially better dispersion. Thanks for the review.
Unfair comparison since the D7 6 iron only carried 180 yards. He would have to hit the 4 iron with the D7 to reach a 200 yard green and no doubt the dispersion would be increase. Otherwise, he could have kept the green at 180 yards and hit an 8 iron with the Sim Max. Dispersion should improve.
First, the D7 Forged 6-iron carry was 184 average not 180. But let's concentrate on dispersion, as you are implying that to achieve a certain yardage with a forged club you have to have "more club" and therefore get more dispersion. Michael did a very interesting test on Nov. 6, 2019 where he pits a Wilson Staff Forged blade 6-iron against a Mizuno JPX 919 Hot Metal 7-iron game improvement iron (each having 30* loft). The Wilson had better front-to-back, side-to-side dispersion, and had tighter spin dispersion too. So, Michael hit "more club" with a blade forged iron and still got better results - if you have the requisite skill level for consistent strikes.
@@JDSFLA I am not implying anything. I am stating a fact that the longer the distance, in most cases, the greater the dispersion, regardless of how your irons are made. As for the tendency for game improvement irons to have greater long to short dispersion, TXG has dispelled that myth. While there are things that TXG do that I may disagree with, their methods are far more scientific than most golf vloggers.
TGX has not dispelled any "myth". Watch their test of the Miura CB-301 cavity back VS. MC-501 muscle back blade - both 6-iron and 29* loft (March 2, 2019). 501 was longer, better dispersion and better feel. That dispersion increases with distance is not news, or we would hit driver with the same accuracy as 9-iron. But getting back to this review, there is reason to believe that the D7 dispersion would be better on a 200 yard shot regardless of what club used. We can't know for sure as that is not what this review is testing. Some more evidence for this belief comes from Michael's review of TaylorMade Epic Forged 7-iron, 27* (Aug. 1, 2919). At the end he picks up his Wilson Staff 5-iron (also 27*) and hits it for the same distance, and almost holes out, mentioning the superior feel.
Trouble with these type of irons is if you’re doing a pitch & run or short shots around the green they’re too springy, no feel. These would be great for 4 to 6 iron, then P760 in 7,8,9,PW for me. just to give mr that feel with the short game. Great vlog though Mike, love your videos mate.
The Amature Golfer - although they probably wouldn’t blend too well. Imagine the gap between your SIM 6 iron and P760 7 iron. You’d probably need two 6 irons in there - one from each range!!
I hear a lot of people say the SIM max irons are ugly but I disagree. Just because it’s “different” doesn’t mean it’s ugly. Now the OS to me is a bit ugly because it’s so big but I guess if that’s what you go for it. The regular SIM Max’s are nice and they hit long and very forgiving.
Michael Newton Golf - as I suspected. Just that I noticed TM are saying that although they are cast they feel more like a forged head. And a few reviewers I’ve watched have confirmed that the feel has improved over M5/M6 irons.
Why would I want to hit the OS irons, demo them both carried the OS 10 yards more? Back ground I’m a 7 handicap, always played player improvement clubs, currently hitting ping i3.
So instead of an iron being numbered by loft range they number them by trajectory. The SIM Max 6 iron launches like a 6 in trajectory (height and descent angle) but has 5 iron loft and spin numbers. Definitely a benefit for short hitters but seriously as someone already pointed out to make up for the ridiculous loft of the 6i the loft gapping gets super funky in the short irons. 8i is 32.5*, 9i is 38.0*, PW is 43.5* and the AW is 49.0*. That's 5.5* of loft separating each club. If anyone needs their 6 iron to go this far and then has so much loft separating their short irons and wedges, which is where most golfers score from, then this golfer would be better suited to get a traditional set of irons and move up a tee box and enjoy the game as it was intended. These iron types that have been out for years make short hitters feel they should be playing from further back tee boxes. Since they still struggle especially in shorter distance shots in hitting greens because their gapping is too large between clubs the effect is extremely slow play. Although this guy hit a 6i over 180 yards he doesn't score any better and it takes 30 minutes more to play the round due to unnecessary waiting and more missed greens in regulation. Just play good traditional irons and play from the proper tee box for your distance and handicap. Speed up play and make the game more enjoyable for yourself and every golfer playing behind you.
What is the point? Just bloody write the loft at the bottom instead of putting some made up number that means sweet f.a. anymore. 5 or 6 wedges to gap these?
MidLifeBiker what’s your opinion on the d7 forged? I ordered a set of TaylorMade sim max irons but immediately had second thoughts because of the look and I recently tested the d7 forged and they felt great
I’m not using m2 irons anymore but absolutely those face slots sucked I had to hammer the 7 and 5 iron back in after every round or practice and one was cracked as well
Great review as always Michael, these irons are a farce how can a high handicapper with slower speeds hit these, people really need to say my 7 iron goes so far who cares it’s based on loft I have the callaway xr os irons from 2016 and the 7 iron is 31.5 long, forgiving and loft to help you get it in the air
The clubs should come with a mandatory 1 stroke penalty on each hole played! ROTFL There should be some serious attention paid by the golf ruling bodies to put some loft range criteria when numbering clubs. One still needs to select the club one needs to make the shot. If its a 5 iron loft range then that's what should be stamped on the club NOT 7 iron. This marketing game needs some USGA controls IMHO. What do you think?
So many things to say on these.... 1. Ugly. Speed bridge may be a smart design, but not smart looking 2. SIM (shape in motion) has some meaning with the drivers/fairway woods, but has absolutely no meaning here 3. SIM Woods are premium and will be all over the tour. These definitely won’t! 4. Front to back dispersion terrible - as much as 16 yards! 5. For your swing speed Mike, the spin rate is actually pretty decent around 4,000 rpm - let’s face it, these are almost 4 irons loft wise so that’s about what you’d expect 6. But how low must they spin for someone with a slower swing speed? The very people this club is targeted at! 7. I’d pick the new WIlson D7 Forged every day of the week over these... on looks and probably feel. And just hit one club stronger on the number... will be the same loft anyway!
Cameron Loveless you sold me on the d7 forged irons. I ordered these sim max irons about a week ago and after doing more research the day I got them I regretted it because I realize how ugly they were. Huge club, a bunch of offset, and that bridge... I hit the d7 forged today and cancelled my sim max order. 40x better feel and look
Iason Terezis that’s awesome! Wilson make great irons. Very underrated, and inexpensive. Glad it worked out for you. (No, I’m not a paid ambassador. I play c300 Forged and they are fantastic)
WARNING: If you have a fast swing and like to hit the ball hard avoid these irons. Made the mistake of not getting fitted, bought the SIM Max irons and they have to be the lightest irons I've ever held. Also a big head might make you think it'll give you more confidence like it did with me but it was actually very off putting, especially in the lower irons where you can actually see the speed bridge from the back of the club. I've learnt my lesson and will be going to get fitted. This is from a 19 handicapper who has no issues with ball striking in irons. The key here is the WEIGHT of the club.
are you referring to the weight of the head? Or weight of the shaft? The shaft weight will change the feel of the weight of the head......ie. heavy shaft for certain golfers makes the head feel light and vice versa. Sounds like you had a poor fitting!
These are absolutely ridiculous, my 2 iron is the same loft as the 4 iron. I can't get my head around what is going on, who benefits from these lofts, a high handicap golfers dispersion will be all the place and a lower/mid handicapper wouldn't go near them for love nor money. Totally pointless IMO. Just more cash in the pockets of the big corporates, same sh1t different day.
That was my first thought when seeing these new clubs. Yikes. How much extra time per round just to clean them after playing on a wet course! If you don't. Just image how much more weight in dried mud you'll be swinging for your next round! LOL
Yea I used to have Nike covert and m2 irons and it sucked because I’m obsessed with cleaning my clubs my Ben Hogan’s ptx pro are a million times easier to clean those speed channels are a horror show and now with that bridge in the middle you’ll need to trade your towel in for a pressure washer.
Two clubs low in loft. Not a good players club. If manufacturers go down loft much more 1 and 2 iron will not exist and we will need 10 wedges! R and A should control lofts.
Nike, uh I mean Taylormade, reintroduces the Slingshot. Engineers to the manufacturing staff: "Hey just increase the number stamped on each club by 2." SIM drivers: Grand slam. SIM irons: strike out looking.
Nice review Mike. Horrid clubs, ugly and tasteless. A 4 iron at 39.25 inch length and 18 deg is basically a 2 iron. This loft jacking is getting ridiculous, guys gaming these are going to be ignored in any club/distance discussions with their mates. Are these going to enhance or hurt TM's brand?
What a f ing joke...43 degree 7-pw laughing my ass off...I would hit that over 170. If your tech is soo good why Jack the lofts....TM is a joke.....I will put my Wilson Staff model blades against these shovels anytime....joke........

One of my favorite swings on youtube, super smooth tempo.
Tried these today. Actually preferred the feel of the max os, felt softer off the face than the normal one which felt a little harsh.

Speed bridge, where have I seen these before. Was it Nike slingshots??
Bob says to Ed: “hey look, my 8 iron goes as far as your 6 iron”. Ed says: “Your 8 iron is a short 6 iron, Shorty.”
Very informative video. Told me pretty much what I needed to know about those clubs. Good job.

Question, I thought the os would be more forgiving, but every shot but one with it wasn’t straight. The other club you hit straight every time.
Could you please try them with those rubber training bits glued to the face.
Why would I want to hit the OS irons, demo them both carried the OS 10 yards more? Back ground I’m a 7 handicap, always played player improvement clubs, currently hitting ping i3.
I'm guessing the Max OS irons will be in you bag this year Mike... 😀😀😀
Yeah right.
Thanks for the upload 👍👍!!!

I just wonder if slow swingspeed golfers will be able to keep these in the air? Loft is helpful for handicap golfers.
What price can we expect?
45 degree descent angle means the shots will have plenty of stopping power on the greens.
I’m not using m2 irons anymore but absolutely those face slots sucked I had to hammer the 7 and 5 iron back in after every round or practice and one was cracked as well

wow you should be on tour sir stupid comment
18 degree 4 iron 😳 that’s almost a 3 wood
I just started playing a week ago! Do you recommend this iron a beginner? If not can you recommend another club! Thank you
Absolutely!
My 4 iron is 22*

What is the difference between sim max and sim max osm
OS stands for Oversize......basically larger head and deeper sole forgiving more forgiveness
I enjoy your reviews but my god when do the manufacturer’s suppose they’ve done enough?
No replacement for m5 irons??
Don’t think so, I’m guessing P790 took most of the M5 iron sales.

Alberto Fernandez-Sanguino took the words out of my mouth!

Makes me laugh, people say ugly irons, hear it on the course all the time then they pull out a toaster on a scaffold pole to tee off hahaha..
Absolute nightmare to keep clean I’m sure. You’ll hate your life after playing in damp conditions

Next year.... longest irons ever produced, 7 iron-25 degrees... stupidity at is best
Pensioners will not get the ball up with these. Just stupid!
Ugly irons!
Sorry I meant 43 degree pw . Hilarious..mine is 48 and goes 142. 27 degree 7 iron? Lol....lmao......what great technology...
Cheater clubs.....lol
