Cyclists knock elderly people over all the time.

Well done Widdy. Yet a gain, a bike rider (JV) trying to deflect at 3.00. somehow trying to condone speeding bikes as cars may speed as well.
If if others breaking the road traffic act somehow gives exemption to bicycles.

In the few days that this new law has been active, some 30 people would have been killed by bad driving.
500 serious injuries by bad driving and 1600 deaths due to low activity (driving, siting watching TV etc).
Zero people have been killed by cyclists in the same period.
I thought Tories were all about economics and good use of money etc??

I agree with this on principle but does seem a bit headline grabbing. UK roads now are full of idiots like tailgaters, mobile phone users at the wheel and people believing their sports car is on a racing track rather than in a 30 Mph zone. Yes penalty's exists when caught.....WHEN caught the key word. Ok talking about road safety you actually need enforcement.

Problem is, bikes are becoming an increasing menace. Bikes are getting faster & the lycra tighter.
Rather than wait for more deaths, either as in this case, bikes racing in a pack (time trialling is just another word for racing) with the third bike, with no forward visibility, crashing into and killing a pensioner, or them having no road education, undertaking turning lorries & getting crushed, should we not have strict new rules to make it safer for everyone?
Often laws are there to protect the stupid from their own stupidity, like those who refused to wear a seatbelt, for example, or those who thought it a good idea to have a few bevvies & then drive a moto vehicle (or ride a bike)
Mandatory cycle training for everyone who cycles on the road, or if under 14, must be accompanied by legal parent or guardian who has undertaken mandatory training.
Speedometers to be fitted & working, to all new adult & teenager size bike sales.
Speed limits applied to bikes (their fault if they do not purchase a suitable speedo)
Banning of pack riding and 'time trialling' on the public roads.
