  • A confrontation between management at The Old Vine, a card-only pub in Winchester, and a punter who wanted to pay in cash has gone viral.
Now, it's perfectly legal for businesses to refuse cash payments and the government says it has no plans to force a change.
But with cash payments on the rise and over five million people saying they rely on it day-to-day, perhaps there should be a legal right to pay with cash?

Small businesses prefer cash as they have to pay a charge for every card transaction.

It's already happened in a couple of places where they had a power cut. The Supermarkets have backup generators but not the shops so they had to close. Hope that it teaches them a lesson.

@@JB-wy8fcso you think the internet wont6go down????? You have a short memory forgetting what happened in Aldi when they were cashless and the system went down, no one could pay. #CASHISK8NG screw the CBDC crap, guarantee they will have full control over your money and you buy what they don't like, (they being the Government) they will suspend your account

Cash by law has to be accepted only if you're paying off a debt, any other time its down to the discretion of the business, I'm amazed nobody brought this up.

I had people argue with me over this, man, I just work here, this has nothing to do with me, why are you upset with me? They make it look like using cards is incredibly inconvenient and old people are too stupid to grasp the idea of tapping a piece of plastic over the card machine to pay.

Yes it absolutely should!! Why bother having a universal legal tender payment system if it isn't universally accepted. The only reason they can refuse legal tender is due to counterfeit notes. Not to force people to use cards. This should be enforced, however the government must be in cahoots if they aren't sticking up for consumers.

I only use cash (unless I'm ordering online). If a shop says card only then I go elsewhere. I think businesses will loose a lot of trade if they ban one or the other.
