  • Should the King apologise for Britain's colonial past?
This morning we've seen footage of a protester shouting in King Charles' face during his official visit to Australia.
The protester is Australian Senator Lidia Thorpe and she is a well known indigineous campaigner, and is an aboriginal Australian herself.
And she's demanding an apology from the King for historic British atrocities.

Lydia Thorpe is a well-known, foul-mouthed, unhinged, activist ...with a minute amount of indigenous heritage (according to her father). She is mostly Scottish, apparently. 😂😂
She resigned from the left-wing party she was elected to represent and is now is an independent senator. She has no chance of being elected for another term.
She has never done anything for indigenous people in Australia, but stir up trouble with like-minded activists.
There are many, many very successful indigenous Australians in medicine, law, science, education, the arts, sports, etc. Australians are extremely proud, and laudatory of people from underprivileged backgrounds who do well.
And your numbers of aboriginal peoples here when first settled are grossly exaggerated! How would you count their numbers? Their lifestyle/customs were harsh and they had high mortality rates. They lived in small tribes. Their population was nowhere near the numbers quoted.

If the kind Dutch King Willem-Alexander was able to offer a formal apology for his country's involvement in the slave trade (2023), then King Charles should be able to offer a similar apology to the Indigenous community of Australia. This is not a sign of weakness but rather shows strength and wisdom. King Willem also acknowledged that while he couldn't speak for his entire nation, "the vast majority" of Dutch citizens "do support the fight for equality for all people, regardless of color or cultural background", and that after acknowledgment and apology, the country could work together on healing, reconciliation, and restoration.

I get that many Aussie citizens don't want anything to do with a foreign king, and I respect their right to voice their opinions publicly. I think the British do bury their heads in the sand with regard to overseas sensitivities to past misdeeds, and we've seen over the last few years the resentment there is towards us and the rudeness to our royal family. It's useful actually to know, and we'd do well to heed the feelings. But apologise? Nah, not a chance. We happened across some land many years ago, built it up and left, except for the odd visit here and there on a ceremonial basis. And now those people we left are thriving. We can't change the past and we can't legitimately apologise for the misdeeds of dead human beings. Maybe they didn't feel the need to apologise. But we can stay the hell away and let independent countries get on with what they want to do. We've made a right royal mess in our own land. Let's stop messing up other people's lives.

Why not ask the Dutch to apologise as well? After all they colonised Tasmania a south eastern Australian Island, which was known as Van Dieman's Land between 1642 and 1855.
Why is it of all the Empires of the World especially those of European origins, i.e. the Spanish, the Portuguese, the French, the German, the Dutch, the Austro-Hungarian that it is only the British that are required to apologise and pay reparations?
This is the Empire that brought democracy, industrialisation to their colonies that means many of these colonies have prospered from.
I'm not denying that there were many wrong things that were done in the name of the East India Company and the British Empire. However let's not gaslight the good things that were done also.

Ever think maybe they didn't want ''democracy and industrialisation'' ?
India was 25 % of world trade before the British brought those concepts over. Bengal alone was richer than the UK and it was a kingdom under sort of under indirect islamic rule (but with plenty of maharajas and kings to help) and it was doing just fine, thank you very much.
Any subsequent industrialisation and railways was solely for British benefit.
So be fair in your reading of history! It's abundantly clear that the British were there to ruin and get as much loot as possible, not to build people up.
For the record, I don't you should apologies for ppls actions hundreds of years ago.
But you should be able to understand why certain people think you should.
