I love thé rétro recipes and viewer contributions! Have you ever made an old fashioned Canadian classic Queen Elizabeth cake with dates and coconut brown sugar topping? Mum used to make it for extra special occasions.
This is so great!!! Thankyou to viewer Helen and Thankyou Kevin for sharing these memory recipes (as I call it) with us! I remember jello poke cake. Dream whip... I remember the name but my Mom used cool whip. Thanks for a great show!
Glad it came out good, Kevin! I feel so proud that you tried it...I appreciate your videos so much ❤️ My Mom passed away 20 years ago...I think you are right...it was late 60s or so...I'm pushing 70! 😂 I'm vegan now and when I get my hands on some suitable substitutes I'm going to try to vegannise it. Will comment again when I figure it out.
Omg! I remember these cakes. It was my job as a child to poke the holes for my grandma in the early 1970's. I loved these! My grandma made a vanilla cake cherry jelly one because I loved cherry anything. Also I watched your banana pudding recipe and that was exactly how my grandma made her banana pudding but used the Nilla wafers because it was the 70's and they were cheaper cookies. She would make huge ones for our church pot luck dinners but no one let her choose what she made because it was her banana pudding or nothing lol I remember my grandpa was so spoiled by her cooking and he always had a sweet tooth so she made homemade cobblers, cakes, banana pudding and pies but yet every night before bed he had his bowl of ice cream. I asked him once why he loved to eat so much ice cream and he said life is too short not to have ice cream every day. He was a hard working man and he was never fat so it worked for him. I was lucky enough to live next door to my grandparents so that was so cool helping my grandma cook everyday. Now I am on the hook every Thanksgiving and Christmas for her chocolate meringue pies and lemon meringue pies. I cheat though she made her crusts from scratch but I buy the nicest pre made crusts and pray to the meringue God's 😂 Thanks for bringing back some wonderful memories of my childhood❤ I am a Gigi (grandma) now so I always love cooking with my two grandchildren.
I think I made this cake years ago! I love how you’re doing the retro recipes (that I grew up with!). The only natural ingredient may well be the eggs but it’s a fun recipe and I believe you when you say it’s delish! I think I’ll make this for my grandkids. ♥️
Ahhh..this brings back such fond memories. My mother and grandmother used Dream Whip in so many recipes when I was a child. I will definitely be making this very soon. Thanks for posting!
I made this cake for a neighborhood picnic. A young man, who was a diabetic, loved it! I gave what was left to a family with a lot of kids and they took it home right away! It was very very sweet.
YUM!! I remember my Mom making this for us and it was so delicious and refreshing, especially on a hot summer day. She'd use the back of a round-handle wooden spoon so it'd make bigger holes, but other than that, this is just like hers. Thank you for sharing and making this for us. Enjoy your lovely cake and the rest of your day! 🙏🤩❤🍓❤🎂
Wow very nice. I like this kind of easy cake mixes. I’ve been doing orange poke one or pineapple one. Have to try the lemon one next. Thank you for sharing this
Good morning Kevin 👩🍳😊that looks delicious 😋 the serving fork you were using was gorgeous ❤️❤️thank you for sharing and starting my week of with a lovely video from my favorite RUclips channel!!!! Lol yes I remember those dream whip boxes well 😂we are showing are age. Have a great week and hope your holiday is everything you want it to be 🙏🙏🙏💕
Ohhhh! I am making this cake as soon as I get some Dream Whip. I didn’t know they still made it. You could probably sub Cool Whip to mix with the Vanilla Instant Pudding Mix, as I do with my banana pudding. I do want to go by the recipe the first time though. Great job Kevin!
🤣 I have my grandmother's 70's beaters!! It is old. It has outlasted 3 new beaters I have had in my short 36 years. Lol... With 6 children under 12yo, I use beaters alot. 😂 Shortcuts in cooking is VERY handy!!! Lol.
I used to care for a woman born in 1927. She had a similar scratch recipe and poked holes then used coconut cream in a can and fresh coconut. It was too soggy sweet for me but maybe half a can would be better. Helens recipe makes a beautiful with the red streaks.
I make this in the Summertime using white cake and the 6 oz box of raspberry jello and cut down the water. I serve with real whipped cream and fresh fruit. Soooo good. I'd like to try a dark chocolate cake with coconut cream pudding, just not sure how that would work!
Kevin, look up Poppy Cannon sometime. Talk about convenience cooking. Love the nostalgia while trying to get back to healthy basics. Nevertheless, memories are great.
I like the baking spray tip - rid not know that’ I saw on YT shorts someone thst worked at a bakery said to make a box cake taste homemade use milk instead of water -4eggs instead if 3-2sticks melted butter instead of oil. Will have to try
Hi Kevin this recipe looks great, thanks for sharing it. When you said you can't use whole milk for the dream whip, and I asked why not , you answered I don't know, it was funny cause you answered my question lol, it's like you heard me 💚
I just love these old recipes ❤ Thank You Helen for sharing it with us,,
Thank you for a trip down memory lane.

Oh yes. We bought our cake mixes in the late 60's and 70's. Poke holes and pour in jello. Sweet memories.
Wow this one brings back memories. In my family we used all different types of cake and jello combinations. White cake and lime was my favorite. 😋

Thanks so much for sharing the recipe. The cake was so delicious that I could not stop eating it. (Oops.)
Thank you, Mrs. Helen! I am just now watching this video! My Mom used to make this for us too, and was a favorite childhood treat! 😊
@@lisaray9404 you're welcome Ms Lisa Ray! I loved all those jello recipes. My Mom just loved to make them. Bet yours did too!
This is one of my favorite cakes. I make it all the time. Love it
Yum I haven’t made this in years !! I remember loving it with hot tea or coffee.
Isn’t it wonderful how people are sharing fav family recipes, I love that. Thank you for doing the video for us. Really appreciate it.
My mom always makes this, yours is the only recipe I can find like she makes with Dream Whip. Thanks for posting.

I loved hearing about your grandmother/grandfather. Chocolate meringue -- oh, yum! (And yes, we need to pray to the meringue gods!)

Oh my does this bring back good memories! Definitely making this for the holidays❤️
Oh this looks so good, Kevin. Light and refreshing. Perfect after a heavy holiday meal.
One of my favorite summer cakes! Requested at all the office potlucks.🍓
I'm making this and the French butter cookies for Christmas this year! I hope I do well, my man's grandmother is from France and I want to impress 🙏
I made this cake for a neighborhood picnic. A young man, who was a diabetic, loved it! I gave what was left to a family with a lot of kids and they took it home right away! It was very very sweet.
Handle of wooden spoon was most common. This was popular in every teachers' lounge in the 80's.
Lovely cake and yummy too. Just found your channel and find you are very interesting and pleasant to watch. 🌼🌻🌼
Delicious fun cake!!! Thank you.

Just on time! I'm making it for my son's b-day celebration on Saturday.

I could ALMOST taste this!!! I gotta try this!!!! Have to try this this weekend! I will be dreaming about this till then!❤️.
I never put them the holes that close....looks really good❤
Can't believe the Dream Whip is still around either....Cool Whip would be better.....
Whoa...lol...thats a crazy cake, as you stated..nothing real in it..but man, thats what makes it sooo good i guess..gal from the 60's..
An improvement would have been if you had used rum to moisten it.

I was always fascinated/horrified by Dream Whip but I grew up in a strictly Cool Whip family! (Not any more "natural").
Oh my!.. 🤤 😋

That was fun!!!♥️♥️😉
Loose the vegetable oil exchange it for olive oil or coconut oil
