- In this video I show you how you can turn your amazon fire tv stick into an amazon fire TV! minus the 4k capabilities...
I learned that the 2nd generation fire stick, the one with the alexa voice remote, has what is called OTG capabilities. This means you can turn the power port (micro USB) into a full sized USB port, but that created a problem where the fire stick couldn't receive power.
So I found a special cable on amazon that is about 4 dollars that does the job, and then combine that with a USB hub (non-powered) and you can add all sorts of USB devices to your fire stick, allowing you to use keyboards, usb flash drives, sd cards, and ethernet internet connection instead of wifi.

I mentioned this in a previous video I made. My desire was for more RAM(virtual) and SD memory. The AFTV Stick has a very flexible bluetooth which allows wireless keyboard, gamepad, and remote switching. I have it on mine. All you have to do is search then pair these devices once and the Stick will recognize the device when you use it. So I can switch between my gamepad and remote(which i also bluetooth) or wireless tablet keyboard without having to mess with any settings.
u dont get more ram from usb sticks, just more storage...ram for firestick is soldered to the board..i think it has like 2 or 3 gigs...

when i ethernet connect thru ethernet wire my fire tv says need to put new Dns and gateway addresss to connect thru ethernet wired. why does it says that. says i need to configure my eithernet connections.

3d print a case and fit all this in.
no more messy components exposed and can be made modular so that components can be removed and upgraded and then it can also look like a fire tv box.
Would the Rii i8+wireless keyboard work as well. What would be the better option. Also what is better Bluetooth or 2.4GHz.
Very cool video, nicely done. To all the people saying just buy a fire tv box or a different android box, that's fine but for someone who has already bought the stick this is a great way to add some features without spending a lot. Plus it's just a cool hack.
I followed your video purchased the OTG cable connected a wireless keyboard a cat5 cable to my router and a thumb drive with an sd card. The fire tv stick recgonizes the sd card as being there but I don't know how to get the stick to utilize the sd card. Also, do you know how to get the stick use the wired connection to my router since I added that connection? Thank you.
Hey i have a question on this DSYJ Micro USB Host OTG Cable with Micro USB Power for Samsung S7 S7 Edge, S6 S6+ S6 Edge, S5, S4 & Nexus 10 9 7 4 Player + ALL OTHERS can this really work on what you show ? i do not see a video where you test it out so we can see if it actually works since the OTG is for phone and it says all others so do you have a video of you testing these out ?
Once you've connected up the USB hub, can you add more than one usb thumb drive or will it only support one?
I bought the three pieces from Amazon for my Fire Stick and it worked well just like described in the video.

Having an issue. Purchased the split cord w/usb, 4 port USB non powered hub and a H9 mini-keyboard. The keyboard works with my laptop, but when plugged into the Firestick setup I get no response. The H9 says it operates on Windows & Linux systems, Smart TVs and Android TV Boxes. Any thoughts?

i really dig this thx. quick question tho... if i decided to run my firestick using that ethernet connection you showed us, will there be a significant decrease in buffering movies and tv shows as compared to wifi. i have 100 mbs internet but often times whatever im playing will freeze or buffer and i want to decrease of eliminate that. thx in advance
+NextTimeTech - It seems that there is an advisement against the use of a splitter with the Fire Stick. Do you know of any technical reason why. When wishing to view programming on my pc monitor and television, across the room, I have used a splitter with the Fire t.v. with no problems.
Actually this technique is cool to use external storage beyond that is offered on the stick.
Also works great with my DS4 which I couldn't get it to work before on BT.

You changed the USB hub and the SD reader & I just used the one linked in the description which is "apparently updated" and it's not providing any access, I am using a 1amp cable to power it as well as the 1amp power port on my 4k tv but it won't connect storage, or any keyboard at all ( i tried two) could you please post links to the other USB hub & the sd card reader? I assume it's because it's USB 3 that it wouldn't work

When I check my connection it says ( Optional; press select to manually configure your Ethernet connection ) . Have you seen this, and do I need to do anything with it ? It does say it's connected, I did a speed test and it showed I was getting just over 10 mbs , that seems slow .
What is the difference between having a Flash Drive connected and a SD Card Reader connected? Someone said you might be able to move internal storage over to the SD Card, but I couldn't figure it out.
I was under the assumption that the flash drive will add more space to install apps or so.cache won't fill up when watching a movie. Do I need to do something g special.to enable that because till shows on 5.96gb of space. Or what functionality does adding a flash drive add?

Contrary to "common knowledge" ethernet is not "always" faster than wi-fi on a TV. TVs are not the same as other ethernet devices, and can sometimes have a very slow ethernet speed, while a 2.4GHz wi-fi can be faster, and 5GHz wi-fi can be many times faster. The only way to know for sure is to check the speeds to see for yourself. A TV is likely to have only a 100MB ethernet port, while 5GHz wi-fi can approach gigabyte speed.

I know with the Fire TV 2nd Generation version they had a Micro SB input so you can add a Micro SD to add more memory.
They took off this feature on the Fire TV 3rd generation.

A way around it for me is just selecting a different provider when the list comes up, I just keep selecting one until one of them doesn't require pairing

I have an amazon 55" TV (not firestick). The TV has an ethernet port. But when i plug in my ethernet into the back of the TV it does not recognize it all. What's going on?? Can you fix this for me? Any ideas.
I run a Dyno-Dock for the Laptop and is the same thing as Amazon are making life so much easier for that Ethernet & USB -Storage as the device has a operating system on it being an Android Device,nice way for say good speeds to 2g Dongle ..10/10 ...Class

If you add the hard wire to the fire stick. Will the firestick automatically detect the hard wire as normally it is trying to find a WiFi signal.
Great video. Did all the steps but my fire stick only allows me to add 2 addons. A usb dongle for an air mouse and a sdcard if I add another dongle the stick doesn’t see my sdcard anymore... I’ve changed the sdcard reader, the usb hub ect ect but no luck

As well as pendrives, can you plug a 1 or 2T hard drive in the OTG/Fire Stick?
not sure about 2tb but i plugged in a 1tb flash drive and it read it just fine. didn't even have to format it...flash drive was even a no name brand from china. 1tb for $8 is hard to pass up. 😉
Better check your capacity of your thumb drive. In my experience cheap thumb drives equal hacked capacity.

I tried this and whenever I plug in my firestick with an OTG cable it goes into a bootloop, if I plug it directly into the power source the firestick works fine. Any suggestions?

It's because your TV doesn't offer enough power. Not all TV's are the same
Won't work. Wall or tv psu won't power stick plus more than 1 otg.

But for ethernet you need adapter. It will not work if you just connect usb cable with female ethernet port.
