Suckling does get a fair bit of jokes thrown at him from other wine critics and some wine geeks, but as you said with him and his team you get a much more diversified list compared to Wine Spectator, Wine Advocate and even Vinous. He also has helped Hungarian wines become more well known, which is great for Hungary's international profile. I also like the fact that it is quite focused on Riesling, Stuart Pigott surely knows his stuff. Thanks for the shout out for German Spatburgunder, I was just in Baden last weekend and had some enjoyable PNs. Cheers!
I enjoyed side by side a 2005 Domaine Faiveley Grand Cru and a 2001 Gaja Sori San Lorenzo. They both were very close in complexity and both were out of this world good on a league of their own. To be honest the Domaine Faveley for me was the better wine by slim margins. I find well made Nebbiolo wines are equali as good as well made Burgundy wines. That is why I like to drink them side by side and compare. You should try it and be amazed.
You have to admire Suckling and Parker for their business model. Taking money from producers to have their wines assessed is just brilliant. We’re all so well informed these days. Always knowing what to expect makes life a little dull sometimes. I admire the producers that don’t succumb to this racket.
I have a Don Melchor 2018, which I believe James Suckling gave a 100 point rating. I’m looking forward to trying it, but I’ll let it sit for some years.
Hi , have not seen the list but must say I opened and truly enjoyed a bottle of Clos Apalta Le Petit Clos 2019 from Chile this past weekend. I thought it was a stunning wine at an excellent price point for such quality! Cheers 🍷
Critics exist to give definitive information on wine, which to most consumers boils down to a numeric rating displayed in the store or sometimes on the bottle. My biggest problem with JS ratings and specifically this list is that 5 of the 100 are rated 97 pts, the rest 98-100. As a consumer, having so many different wines be given such high scores makes it difficult to make an educated decision on what to purchase. Wine is super personal and subjective, but I think so many nearly perfect scores can be misleading to most.
I have one of those Travalginis and drank one as well bit over a year back. It was almost a bruiser for a Gattinara. Built for ageing. Won't open the second one until earliest 2029.
Loved seeing K Vinter's M.C.K. (Motor City Kitty) 2021 at #7. Suckling has shown he is a big fan of Charles Smith, but to have this at #7 with a 99 point rating at only $40/bottle is such a delight to see. Kudos to House of Smith and K Vintner's.
I've heard some of those big names are basically on the payroll of some Chateau / Winemkers. The higher the payment, the higher the rating. Is this true / not unheard of?
@@drmatthewhorkey Thank you :) a wine merchant in a very fancy store suggested that to me recently when we talked about ratings. Personally, I don´t really care about the ratings anyway :)
I have the 2021 K Vintners M.C.K. I do not think it is a 99 point wine. I find the descriptors are more inline with automotive aromas. Perhaps that is why it has the name Motor City in it's title.
Big fan of Castello Di Ama. If you ever get a chance to visit the vineyard, they have an INSANE contemporary art collection built by having artists in residence, big names like Hiroshi Sugimoto, Lee Ufan, and Anish Kapoor.
Try Marco Cirillo's 1850s grenache. Marco was at Antonio Galloni's Vinous Icons this year. At $70 AUD it is an amazing representation of 1850's old vine grenache from Barossa. The real deal
As always its an italian heavy infused top 100.....i believe that wine publications should have quotes for each of its tasters and represent all the regions reviewd by the publication. Getting back to the list itself....dispite some german riesling its not a very innovative list.....tuscany + tuscany + tuscany....i mean i know he has a house there but still :) i personally dont use the top 100 of any publication as a source for buying strategies
@@drmatthewhorkey I feel that a channel like yours opens the door for discussion and regular collectors can state their feelings towards a certain subject. James Suckling is nowadays a publications that covers many regions of the world but the list year after year shows where is "heart" is.....
its sad that Terlans Pinot Bianco reserva is the best Pinot Bianco out there because it was pretty mid when I tried and it is until now the only Pinoc Bianco I have tried😅

Matthew: “Etna is blowing up!”
Sicilians: 😮👀
Phrasing! 😂
hahahhaah touché

I do love seeing some of my favorite producers thrilled with the scores

what a tasting!!!

There are so many fantastic wines that don't get rated
Would you ever consider doing a full wine cellar tour? I’d love to see what you’re drinking versus aging
Already on the channel
I have a Don Melchor 2018, which I believe James Suckling gave a 100 point rating. I’m looking forward to trying it, but I’ll let it sit for some years.
That wine ages well
Any video coming from your visit to Dr. Bürklin-Wolf? Would be great to see!
That content is on Instagram
I'll try to find the Thörle Spätburgunder one, I regularly drink their wines and so far not a single bottle has disappointed me.
Good producer!

Fantastic wine that showed up in a Grand Vin vs Second Wine video a few months ago

Wine is super personal, so it's so much beyond the scores. You are right
"I want wines that are unique, have character." - Couldn't agree more.
🙏🙏💪🏼💪🏼🔥
I picked up a case of the Comtes for $169/bottle a couple months ago. Its been great getting these Champagnes at dropping prices again
that is a good price!
@ yep. Wine prices have been really dropping. One nice thing to see in this economy

Those darn Nebbiolos can be stubborn in the cellar!
Nice watch! Go Green!
It’s a Hulk 🟢💪🏼
Thanks!!!
@@Jckendall13looks like a Cermit…. Either way great watch !

I am a fan too but haven’t had the MCK yet!

I think these days that is more speculation than true…

I've been! Beautiful property in a little hamlet.
you didnt mention the price of the san leornardo? love that region
over 100 usd
Tried the de la Solitude Côtes du Rhône & I thought it was awful. The Saint Cosme and Halos de Jupiter are waaay better for roughly the same price.
Wowwwww

Yet people still love looking at the lists and clicking on my reaction videos too them 😬😎

Wow, I guess you've never heard of California.
??? 🤣😂
Suckling and his team may review the biggest diversity of wines. Just too bad they suck at describing and rating them
😂😅🤣
seriously please stop talking about spätburgunder ;)
😂🤣😅
